Really new. While I write this, many of the performances are still being rehearsed. They premiere at SPRING or in a like-minded festival somewhere in the world just before. And this means that even I haven’t seen many of the performances on our programme. But I know the people making them; I know them well. SPRING is sharing with them the risk that every new artistic enterprise entails. Will the exciting plans actually lead to a captivating production? What will you, the audience, think of it when it’s finished? I am just as curious to find out as you are and I’m looking forward to witnessing the results of all these adventures. Dutch productions Many of this year’s SPRINGperformances have been made in the Netherlands and I am proud of the artistic variety and the range of unique signatures represented by these artists. Nicole Beutler, Nick Steur, Florentina Holzinger & Vincent Riebeek, Edit Kaldor, Jan Martens, Jerzy Bielski & Sandra Abouav, Davy Pieters, Andrea Božić & Julia Willms, Katja Heitmann and Dries Verhoeven are presenting their performances and installations at SPRING, and nearly all of them are (Dutch) premieres. International artists The other artists come from Angola, Belgium, Germany, Estonia, France, United Kingdom, Hungary, Israel, Japan, Austria and Switzerland. Does that matter? Well, it does. Because they all see our world from a different perspective, from a different cultural background and from a different personal experience. But on the other hand, it doesn’t matter at all. Because they are not here to represent their country. Many of them don’t even work in their native country, but somewhere else, wherever life and work opportunities have taken them. All of these artists mix dance with theatre, visual art with technology, music with politics. And that is what SPRING represents. That is one half of SPRING. The other half, that’s you, the audience. So come, and make us complete! Welcome to SPRING 2016! Bland, boring discourse? No way! Curious to find out about the similarities in the performances at #SPRING16? Use our #hashtags, both online and offline. 10 MINUTES 10 Minutes 10 Questions is a high-energy after-show talk in quiz format. You come up with the questions and a presenter puts them to the artist. Take a card, write down the first question that pops into your mind after the performance, and hand it in. Our ‘Master of Ceremonies’ Oscar Kocken will fire ten of these questions in as many minutes at the people behind the performance. (Language: English) #NEWYOUNG the artists of the future #EDGYDANCE rough and raw dance #URBANSPACE SPRING in the city #TENDERDANCE subtle and sensitive dance #TOUGHTHEATRE exciting and beyond mainstream #NAKEDTRUTH all will be revealed BAR TALK #DIGITALNATIVES theatre and new technology In our Bar Talks a wide variety of guests discuss the performance they just saw; from a university professor to a graphic designer. How did they experience the performance, what did they think and what went on in their minds? With a beer in hand and some nibbles within reach our guests, each from their own background, will share their findings. (Language: Dutch) #POLITICALANIMALS performance meets politics FLASH INTRO A Flash Intro is not a real introduction, but a personal welcome. It is a short preface by SPRING-programmers Rainer Hofmann and Karlien Vanhoonacker about the performance that’s about to start. What can you expect? Who made this performance? Why did we pick it for SPRING? Flash intros occur unannounced and only before a limited number of performances. (Language: English) OPEN ACADEMY SPRING Open Academy is a programme for more in-depth study led by dramaturg Merel Heering. During the meeting(s) you will find out more about contemporary performing arts in general and the artists on the festival programme in particular. These evenings include attending a performance. You can order SPRING’s Open Academy per night, or book the whole series. The Open Academy is SPRING’s very own ‘people’s academy’! (P. 14 - 15) (Language: Dutch) #LIVESOUNDS a concert experience #VISUALARTS performing art meets visual art #BIGNAMES experience the experts #UTRECHTCONNECTION made in Utrecht GUIDE ME No idea which SPRING-performances might be good for you? With Guide Me, SPRING has developed an online tool that will advise you which performances to see based on a few brief questions and simple choices! springutrecht.nl/guideme ARTIST TALK As part of SPRING Academy, every year the festival invites artists to take part in an interview in front of our audience, to talk about their work. After Romeo Castellucci and Dries Verhoeven in 2015, this year we will be interviewing Tim Etchells in an Artist Talk. (Language: English) 12 13 SPRING OPEN ACADEMY DANCE 6: THE SQUARE INTERNATIONAL Time’s Journey Through A Room INSTALLATIONS A Piece Of 2, The Cube & THE COMMON PEOPLE OPEN ACADEMY INTRO OPEN ACADEMY #1 OPEN ACADEMY #2 OPEN ACADEMY #3 During SPRING you can see a range of performances that straddle the line between dance and theatre, made by contemporary, international theatre makers and choreographers. But what can you expect? And how to watch these performances? Why has SPRING decided to present this particular type of ‘theatre’ and ‘dance’? This first SPRING Open Academy-night offers an introduction to the festival programme and provides a framework for the type of work that is presented at SPRING. But it also serves as an introduction to the series of three SPRING Open Academy nights and an opportunity to meet dramaturg Merel Heering as well as your fellow participants. Without words How to talk about dance? Attracted by the exotic… How to watch international theatre? Visitors in motion How to undergo an installation? Japanese stage director Toshiki Okada is the central focus of this meeting, during which we will address Time’s Journey Through A Room and the context of this performance. Can we simply understand a performance that comes from a faraway culture? Is there such a thing as a universal language of the stage? And does a work of art work regardless of the context? In the course of this evening we will be visiting various performances and works of art in (semi) public space. We will address not only the background of the pieces, but we will also be looking at the impact a work of art has on its environment (and vice versa). How does an installation affect public space and the everyday life in the city? What happens to you as a spectator when you are not bound to a chair in the auditorium and/ or when the start and the end of a performance are unspecified? SPRING Open Academy is SPRING’s very own ‘people’s academy’, founded especially for those of you who want to find out more about contemporary dance and theatre but also about the artists in the festival. During each of the three meetings, led by dramaturg Merel Heering, one performance and a related theme will be the focal point. SPRING OPEN ACADEMY INTRO You can attend a single meeting or you can attend the series of three. The price includes your ticket to the performance, a coffee before the performance and a drink afterwards. Max. 15 participants per night. Defining, drawing lines, pigeonholing: the square. What role does this man-made shape perform in our society? In a celebratory ritual eight dancers and one actress lead you through a landscape of possibilities. In this second part of her Bauhaus-trilogy, Nicole Beutler is making our inherent longing for nuance, poetry and vitality felt. Drawing inspiration from sources as diverse as urban life, Piet Mondrian and American Square Dance, 6: THE SQUARE is a plea for freedom that brings together dance, fashion, visual art and electronic music. 6: THE SQUARE by Nicole Beutler will premiere during SPRING as part of Size Matters: a programme with which the festival helps choreographers who have hitherto predominantly created work for the studio stages create performances for the big stage. Vacuum Days Utrecht, a poster campaign created by writer and stage director Tim Etchells (Forced Entertainment) announces a series of entirely imaginary performances. The posters are inspired by newspaper headlines, current affairs, gossip and political rhetoric. We expect Putin, Merkel and IS to be part of the cast, possibly with a minor role for the Dutch prime minister Rutte. These caustic, funny, far-fetched and sometimes uncomfortable announcements are made to spark reflection on the times we live in, the political dilemmas we are facing today, and the sensationalism of the news and other media. Vacuum Days Utrecht will be especially created for SPRING and is a continuation of Etchells’ (online) project Vacuum Days (2011). springutrecht.nl/days Interview with Tim Etchells (P. 69) SUN 22 MAY: 17.00 (60 MIN) // THEATER KIKKER, FOYER 20 PHOTO: HUGO GLENDINNING ARTIST TALK THURS 19 – SAT 28 MAY (ONGOING) // UTRECHT CITY CENTER // ADMISSION FREE (NO TICKET REQUIRED) 21 #NEWYOUNG #URBANSPACE #VISUALARTS PREMIERE Performance artist Nick Steur stacks and balances rocks in complete concentration and with incredible precision. It has even earned him an appearance on national television. During SPRING, Nick Steur will once again be defying gravity. With fewer, but considerably bigger rocks than before. A piece of 2 – balancing human sized rocks is a new, large-scale and unremitting search for a moment of balance that seeks out the eternal tension between man and the forces of nature. Come to Neude square and witness Nick Steur trying to balance two man-sized rocks with the utmost precision. It will change your view on the obvious and the unnoticed. Enter The Cube! Enter an audiovisual landscape with mountains, clouds, a river, the sea, people and animals. The video projections inside The Cube cause a constant shift in your perception of the space. The spectacular landscapes, shifting weather conditions and gigantic animals enter the cube, as it were. The Cube evokes emotions, making you feel a little as if you were in a place you have visited before, but had forgotten all about. You lose yourself in a completely different world while staying firmly rooted in the here and now. The performance lasts anywhere between five minutes and eternity: as long as you are willing to be a part of it, the performance will go on... But at the same time, we are also flooded with images of refugees stranded on a Greek island, or some disaster in a holiday destination. Images that affect us in very different ways: they make us aware of reality and beset us with feelings of discomfort, responsibility and perhaps even guilt. With his video installation Guilty Landscapes Dries Verhoeven is bringing the reality of uncomfortable news images dangerously close. His question: is there a personal connection between the supposed victim and its witness? Can the relationship be turned around? springutrecht.nl/guilty THURS 19 – SAT 28 MAY: 14.00 – 22.00 (5 MIN, 1 PERSON PER ENTRY) // GALERIE SANAA // € 2.50 (ONLINE & BOX OFFICE) ADMISSION FREE FOR VISITORS HACKING HABITAT, FURTHER INFO VIA SPRINGUTRECHT.NL/GUILTY 28 29 Massimo Furlan CH Blue Tired Heroes NL/D #URBANSPACE #UTRECHTCONNECTION NL PREMIERE A blue costume with a red cape, red socks, yellow belt and red underpants: Superman! Has he ever grown old? Can superheroes even grown old? Can they get washed out at all? In Blue Tired Heroes, the Swiss choreographer Massimo Furlan releases a group of ageing ‘supermen’ to walk around Utrecht. Fat or thin, stooped or proudly standing tall, with or without health shoes or walking sticks: they haven’t forgotten their heroic gestures or their flying poses… Blue Tired Heroes is a funny yet moving performance that questions the fragile nature of man through heroism, icons and role models. He is one of the four performers in Sons of Sissy: a performance featuring rural rituals, dancing and live performances of Alpine music. Folklore with a twist. Freed from all conservatism and averse to any form of pigeonholing, these gentlemen, part queer band of folk musicians and part ‘experimental ritual dance combo’, are unflinchingly going in search of hitherto unseen interpretations. With laughter as their weapon they offer a complete overhaul of the clichés of traditional male role models. Sons of Sissy is a European festival hit that offers an unexpected introduction to Alpine folklore. From the first press conference to the party meeting that was attended by no fewer than 7000(!) people, the fictional NO75 Unified Estonia was closely followed by a film crew. In the documentary Ash and Money we witness how probably the biggest performing arts event in recent European history came about. What started out as a stunt that tried to make real populist politics redundant by employing a fictional hyper-populist approach, became a hallucinatory documentary about contemporary politics. The truth must be hidden somewhere inside that heap of information. And if we find it, why don’t we act on it? For instance, to put a stop to climate change? Re-enactment of the Now is a cinematic site-specific performance in which the young stage director Davy Pieters has taken the immanent climate change as her point of departure. By offering a re-enactment of the now – showing an event in the present as if it were something that took place in the past – Pieters is creating a world in which fact and fiction become bizarrely intertwined, and which will make you doubt everything you thought you knew and saw. The talented Davy Pieters has rapidly risen to fame with her work and is fast becoming one of the most original stage directors in the Netherlands. springutrecht.nl/now SUN 15 AND MON 16 (TRY-OUTS), TUES 17 AND WED 18, FRI 20 – SUN 22 MAY AND WED 25 – SAT 28 MAY: 20.00 (90 MIN) // KOOIJDIJK 34 (NEAR FORT RUIGENHOEK) // € 20 (ONLINE) LANGUAGE: ENGLISH FOR FURTHER INFORMATION ON TRANSPORTATION, ROUTE AND PARKING SEE SPRINGUTRECHT.NL/NOW 36 37 Edit Kaldor Web of Trust #POLITICALANIMALS HU / NL #DIGITALNATIVES #TOUGHTHEATRE NL PREMIERE SPRING COPRODUCTION What if we refuse to continue on the plotted course? How misleading is physical communication? How can body language be read, but also: how can it be manipulated? Throughout history, the female body has been especially subjected to a heavily controlled gaze. Dancer/ choreographer Charlotte Vanden Eynde and visual artist Dolores Bouckaert are both fascinated with the representation of the human body and the (mis)perception of it. Deceptive Bodies reveals a series of representations, in serene poses, of body images from the past and the present. Tempting, innocent and touching, Dolores Bouckaert and Charlotte Vanden Eynde try to expose stereotypical images. Deceptive Bodies is an intimate duet, powerfully dramatic and visual. springutrecht.nl/bodies 44 PHOTO: HERMAN SORGELOOS SAT 21 & SUN 22 MAY: 19.15 (70 MIN) // THEATER KIKKER, KLEINE ZAAL // € 15 (ONLINE) 45 #EDGYDANCE PHOTO: KONSTANTIN LIPATOV Maud Le Pladec / Ictus Ensemble FR / BE CONCRETE #LIVESOUNDS + NL PREMIERE DOUBLE BILL #2 CONCRETE is a dance piece with the vibes of a live concert: exhilarating, tight, fierce and powerful. Director and choreographer Toshiki Okada has a unique style in which text, movement and images all seamlessly melt into each other. With an almost microscopic eye for detail he focuses on his characters’ inner and outer movements on the stage. Time’s Journey Through a Room uncovers Japanese society: a society that has been torn in many ways since the big earthquake, and the tsunami and nuclear disaster that followed it in 2011. For Schönheitsabend they have drawn inspiration from their illustrious predecessors, those who reinvented dance (and themselves) at the beginning of the 20th century by creating taboo-breaking ballets full of exotic fictions, shifts in the balance of power, sex and reversed malefemale roles. Holzinger and Riebeek have taken Sheherazade by the famous Ballet Russes as one of their starting points for a dance duet in three acts. In addition to frenzy, ecstasy and explicit eroticism, expect an homage to the star of the ballet Vaslav Nijinsky and a well-measured dose of camp. The Swiss stage director Milo Rau, never one to shy away from social and political taboos in his controversial and very powerful performances, is presenting seven young performers (aged 8 to 13) who are using the life of Marc Dutroux to ask a number of questions. Questions about ‘our times’, about how private lives will be forever tied up with certain (political) events, and which taboos are hidden beneath them. What do children teach us about our own fears, doubts and hopes? In Five Easy Pieces, Milo Rau uses a range of techniques which he himself has refined, such as the ‘re-enactment’, in which a real event is imitated in minute detail. (Se Eu Fosse Angolano) is a remarkable one-man show in which Nástio Mosquito mixes personal rants, exhilarating poetry slam and emotional songs with titillating visuals. In S.E.F.A. he doesn’t mince words. Hopeful and full of energy he asks questions about identity and expressions such as ‘roots’, never afraid of being politically incorrect. Mosquito, who was born in Angola, takes a multidisciplinary approach: music, philosophy, dance, video art, digital art… He has even developed his own app. Some call him a visual artist, others a theatre maker or musician. (Language: English) The Dutch performing arts have proven their resilience after the government budget cuts, according to current policy plans and funding applications. But what does this mean? Trade journal Theatermaker and Theaterkrant.nl are observing an eroding theatre sector: we are keeping up a façade of success and artistic development, or are we doing more on a smaller budget? We are exhausted and burned-out. Across the performing arts we are hearing: the sector seriously can’t take any more. In collaboration with SPRING, Theatermaker is organising a talk about the near future. Will it all get much worse, or is there a way out? The afternoon’s subject ties in with the theme of the April/ May issue of Theatermaker. Composing for Choreography is an in-depth one-afternoon class about composing music for dance.
