Managers Report: 7th February 2010
Hello and a very warm welcome to our visiting team Grimsby.
This will be our last HOME game of the season, so hopefully we can all make it
a good one.
Well done to Jack (GOALKEEPER) who had his very first game last week at
Grimsby and had a cracking game.
It has only been one week since we last met Grimsby, where we came away
with a loss, but now we're on our own ice we are hoping to turn it around.
Hopefully our Zamboni doesn't break down like Grimsby's tractor did and that
we don't have to get on the ice with shovels and a hose pipe, as we have a lot
more ice to cover lol
Best wishes to all of you for the rest of the season, lets give our teams lots of
positive support and encouragement, in what I'm sure will be an exciting game.
Hi everyone and welcome to issue 7 of the U12B's match day programme.
Firstly I'd like to thank Ty (Connor Parker's dad) for helping out with the printing
of today's programme, muchas gracias!
So today is our last home league game, then we have a couple of road trips to
bring the league season to a close. All I can say is what a blast I've had, and I
hope everyone involved with the U12B's during the 09/10 season have also
enjoyed themselves. More important I hope all the young players involved in
any of the games have enjoyed it and have taken plenty of learning away from
the league games and training.
Following on after the league we have the academy trials week commencing
17th May, the academy presentation evening on the 28th May and the
academy tournaments during June & July, with the U12's tournament on the
weekend 19th - 20th June.
Finally we wish Grimsby a very safe journey home.

When the 10/11 season starts at the end of August we don't know who the
players will be applying their skills with but we do know that half of this U12B
team will be moving up to the U14's league, so good luck guys - Jack Edgar,
Arron Hudson, Charlotte Heatley, Chelsea Aheran, Connor Parker, Josephine
Hole & Andre Beighton. And half of the U12B team will be remaining in the
U12's league for another season - James Ashley, Bailey Templar, Romy Davis,
Oliver Mitchell, Callum Neenan & Blue Brownlie.
For me, hopefully I can attend a level one coaching course over the summer
and really help with the learning and development of the young players who
want to play the game we all love!

Redwings use 'pond' to their advantage

Final Score: Grimsby 13 , Sheffield 6
In a scene resembling the creation and maintenance of hundreds of backyard rinks in North America, I was
transported back twenty years (at least) to Peterborough, Ontario, Canada and the vision of my dad, out in
our back garden 'flooding' our rink on cold winter evenings. This is where we earned our stripes and took our
knocks and learned how to play the game we love. Today thanks to a broken ice collection box on the tractor
'Zamboni' the Swampfrogs would learn the 'delights' of pond hockey too.
Well from the first whistle it was clear that the Redwings are comfortable playing on the postage stamp size
rink and took the early lead through Sam Coombs at 1:36. Connor Parker struck back at 3:54 from an Arron
Hudson pass to tie the game at one a piece. Grimsby fought hard to regain the lead and saw the reward at
4:46 when Cameron McCall scored unassisted. Three further goals by the home team gave the Redwings a
comfortable 5-1 lead at the first buzzer.
Connor Parker took early offense to the net at 16:09 to bang home is second of the game neatly assisted by
Blue Brownlie. Hard work and back and forth play resulted in only one further goal coming in the form of
Luke Parkinson, sending the Redwings into the third period ahead by four at 6-2. Zac Morgan thought he
was playing with the big boys and saw the gate at 29:33 for boarding Blue Brownlie, who after several
minutes on the ice skated off to cheers from the crowd.
Ice hockey has been played in this country since the early years of the 20th century; Britain was a founder
member in 1908 of the world governing body, the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF). The first game
between Oxford and Cambridge was held on 16th March 1900, Oxford won 7-6
The sport first became prominent here in the 1930s with the opening of large indoor arena's in London at
Wembley, Harringay and Earls Court (Empress Hall). Teams were staffed almost entirely by Canadian
professionals, several of whom went on to compete in North America's National Hockey League (NHL).
The 13 seasons either side of World War II (1935 - 54) are often referred to as the sport's golden era. There
were two professional leagues, the English National League and the Scottish National League, which drew
large crowds to arena's in London, Brighton, Nottingham and Scotland. The men's national team enjoyed
their greatest success in 1936 when the upset the Ice Hockey world in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Bavaria by
winning the Triple Crown of Olympic, World and European titles. Their five victories included a 2-1 defeat of
Canada, the reigning World champions.
The two domestic leagues merged in 1954 into a British National League but rising wages and falling crowds
caused it to fold in 1960. With no new rinks being built, the sport went into decline. It only began to achieve
wide popularity again in 1982 when the British League was re-formed with teams composed mostly of homegrown players and a strict limit (usually three) on imported professionals. The English Ice Hockey
Association (EIHA) was formed in 1982 with around 60 teams, this has now grown to over 370 across
England and Wales. This is generally seen as the start of the game's modern era.
The 3rd period saw plenty of action at both ends of the ice, with Bailey Templar driving the net, picking up his
rebound off his skate and 'dangling' the keeper with a backhand scoop to bring the visitors to within three
goals. A flurry of goals by Sheffield made the home side uncomfortable, Andre Beighton shooting well from
Bailey Templar and Oliver Mitchell at 32:50. Chelsea Aheran worked hard to dig out a loose puck and turn it
net bound for her first goal of the season at 33:19. Blue Brownlie rounded out the scoring for Sheffield at
33:51 on an unassisted marker, one that even surprised the referee! Grimsby made Sheffield pay dearly for
their boldness in this game adding six further third period goals making the final score line a very flattering
13-6 to Grimsby. Great efforts from James Ashley, Charlotte Heatley, Romy Davies and Josephine Hole on
the point and Callum Neenan up front made for a very exciting game for the traveling contingent.
Boosted by the largest rink building programme ever seen in this country and a multi-million pound
sponsorship of the league by Heineken lager, the sport enjoyed its greatest popularity since the 50's. The
two division (Heineken) British League ran from 1983 - 1996 and the end of season British Championships
were televised by BBC Grandstand and drew capacity crowds to Wembley arena for 13 straight years.
Goal tending duties for Sheffield were shared by Evan Coles, who faced 30 shots during his tender between
the pipes and the debut of Jack Edgar, who turned away 58% of the shots that came his way. Jack received
a great ovation entering the pad for his first ever competitive game and went on to earn his place in the blue
paint.

The Elite League, which was created from the surviving super-league sides, still has a preponderance of
overseas skaters. The English Premier League, which was formed in the late 80's, continues to fly the flag
for home-grown talent.
As you read this we will be facing the same Redwings team on a very different playing surface, lets hope the
'Frogs' can return the volley and get a better result playing on our pond.

This success, coupled with the promise of more big arena's like the one's in Sheffield (opened 1991) and
Manchester (1995), prompted a revival of the professional game. The super-league, which was formed in
1996, reverted to a heavy reliance on overseas players and although at first crowds continued to increase,
many clubs eventually found the league to expensive and it collapsed in 2003.
Meanwhile, the men's national team have competed for the last 15 seasons in the second tier of the World
Championships. Their low world ranking - 25th - is due to the team receiving minimal funding from inside the
sport and none at all from the government, while international competition continues to strengthen.
