SMCS FUNDRAISER – ‘SHIRLEY’ OPEN GARDEN WEEKEND
SMCS students and parents preparing morning tea & lunches at Shirley last weekend.
Last weekend S.M.C.S. had the opportunity, as a fundraiser, to cater for the Open Garden Day at Shirley, a beautiful
property owned by John and Sally Ann Cottle. It was a wonderful day, and we would like to thank everyone who
contributed to its success, particularly the parents who served on the day.
Special mention of thanks to all the parents assisting, to Kathleen Bowerman for the catering, and to Willow, Elisha, Lily,
Cari, Amelia and Miruna for serving and willingly giving their time and enthusiasm to help make this a wonderful event.
Primary Mutterings
Year 2/3
In English in our class we have been studying a couple of Roald Dahl books. We started with Esio Trot. This is not a well
known book, but the students really enjoyed this one. We looked at nouns and verbs in the context of the story, as well
as the writing of a procedure.
The students also learnt what was involved in a book cover – front cover containing title, author, illustrator and a
picture, back cover containing a blurb about the book and the spine containing the title and the author.
We then designed our own cover for the book.
Following this we have begun to read and study Fantastic
Mr Fox. This is a very descriptive book, so we have been
learning about adjectives and how to use them. We have
just completed a “wanted poster” for Mr Fox, using good
descriptions to make him recognisable if ever we saw
him. We are also in the process of writing our own
version of the story.
These studies have been very good units of work and the
children have all enjoyed reading and listening to them
and working through various activities.
Sport Spot
Jordan Excels at nationals
Jordan Davis, in Year 7, placed sixth in Australia for the under 14 hammer throw at the Australian Championships in
Sydney last week. He is ACT State Champion and record holder for hammer throw. SMCS congratulates Jordan.
The Cross Country is fast approaching. On Friday 27 March students from Kindergarten to Year 10 will be running the
races listed below:
5 to 7yrs students will run 1km starting at 9:30am (at school)
8 to 10yrs students will run 2 km starting at 10:00am (at school)
11 to 13yrs students will run 3 km at 10:45am (at school)
14 to 16yrs girls will run 4km at 12pm (at North Ridge Reserve)
14 to 15yrs boys will run 4km at 12pm (at North Ridge Reserve)
16yrs boys will run 6km at 12pm (at North Ridge Reserve)
Students may wear their house coloured clothing all day. This is a change from previous years. Please ensure all clothing
is modest (no bare mid-drifts) and is labelled with your child’s name. Students may wear bike pants to run but must
wear shorts over the top for any other part of the day.
Students should also have their own drink bottle of water, a sun hat and if required, their asthma puffer.
We need parent helpers so please volunteer to help out. This is particularly essential to running the older years Cross
Country in North Ridge Reserve.
