uring fiscal year 2012, our 101st year, the Green Mountain Club
focused a great deal of energy on the Winooski Valley Long Trail
Relocation project and repairing major damage to trails r­ esulting
from Tropical Storm Irene.
This was the third and final year of our fortieth president’s term.
­During her presidency, Marge Fish of Londonderry was a strong and
steady leader who promoted a number of significant and positive
changes at the club. She was an avid supporter of our youth education
program and guided us through the hiring of a new executive director.
The club moved closer to fulfilling its century-old vision of a safe,
permanent and scenic route for the Long Trail across the Winooski River.
To that end, through the purchase of land and easements, we established
a new, secure route for the trail through the Winooski Valley in Bolton
and raised hundreds of thousands of dollars from our members to build a
footbridge that will be the centerpiece of this relocation effort.
Meanwhile, the club faced many challenges on the ground and with
our finances due to Tropical Storm Irene. The late August storm wiped
out trail treadway in the Killington/Shrewsbury area; washed away
roads to trailheads near Camel’s Hump, Big Branch and elsewhere; and
destroyed trail infrastructure like the Thundering Falls boardwalk and
the Appalachian Trail bridge by Kent Pond. The storm damage and the
resulting National Forest closure kept our trail crews out of the woods
for three weeks last fall and affected our ability to do funded trailwork.
Instead, our Long Trail Patrol and GMC caretakers worked tirelessly for
weeks helping dig out our neighbors in Waterbury and other Vermont
communities who faced immense, often heartbreaking, challenges.
All the while, the club continued its regular trail and shelter maintenance through massive efforts by volunteers and projects by the Long
Trail Patrol and GMC caretakers. The club and its partner, Northwoods
Stewardship Center, completed the first stretch of the hiking trail
to Middle Mountain on the Northeast Kingdom Heritage Lands. We
­accepted management responsibility for the entire Appalachian Trail
through Vermont—adding 22 miles of AT to our existing responsibilities.
The club also faced unforeseen challenges like an illegal ATV trail on
Laraway Mountain and concerns regarding wind energy development on
Vermont’s ridgelines.
The club continues to rely heavily on our membership for the ­financial
support necessary to pay for such challenges. Between ­membership dues,
donations, and publications sales, individuals c­ ontinue to fund about
two-thirds of the club’s work. One year after GMC’s successful push for
10,000 members, we still exceed that landmark with growing confidence
that we’ll remain above that threshold.

Managing Our Trails
T
he field season began with heavy spring flooding and
­finished with Tropical Storm Irene unleashing record
­rainfall and unparalleled damage to the state and our
­hiking trails. Still, thousands of people enjoyed the Green
Mountains by hiking the Long Trail System. With funding from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, the
­Vermont Recreation Trails Fund, and the Appalachian Trail
Conservancy, GMC’s field staff was able to forge through
­unforeseen challenges presented by Irene to maintain our trails
and keep them safe. While the Green Mountain National Forest
was closed from September 1–16, GMC’s trail crews and caretakers aided flood victims in several impaired c­ ommunities.

GMC volunteers and staff worked with the Northwoods
Stewardship Center Kingdom Conservation Corps to build
one mile of the new trail to Middle Mountain on the
­Kingdom Heritage Lands
GMC summit caretakers interacted with 10,576 hikers on
Camel’s Hump (the mountain was closed all of September
due to blowout of access roads from Irene), and a record
45,735 people on Mount Mansfield, helping protect rare
alpine communities.

Protecting Trail Lands
S
ince 1986, GMC’s Long Trail Protection Program has
completed 91 land and easement acquisitions, ­protecting
almost 80 miles of the Long Trail System, 10 miles for
future trail relocation, and 25,099 acres.
Land Protection Highlights
Service to amend their decision and require the installation of an a­ udio visual warning system. Flashing red lights
atop t­ owers will only be activated when planes approach,
instead of flashing constantly, reducing the visual impact
on the Long Trail/Appalachian Trail and federal Wilderness Areas nearby.
Fy 2012 was an excellent year for trail protection in support of
our planned Winooski Valley Long Trail Relocation:
• 177 acres purchased in Bolton: The Green Mountain
Club bought this attractive woodland, which will host 1
mile of relocated trail,
from Patrick Smith and
transferred it to the State
of Vermont for addition
to the Mount Mansfield
State Forest. The club
retained conservation
restrictions and a trail
right-of-way. Nuts from
the property’s abundant
oak and beech trees are
an important food for
black bear, deer, turkeys, and other wildlife.
• Four trail easements acquired in Bolton: CRAG-VT
graciously donated an easement for a relocation of the
Long Trail across its land adjacent to the Smith Tract. GMC
purchased an easement from Michael and Nancy Hauser
which ensures passage of the trail between Bolton Notch
Road and the CRAG-VT Tract. Bolton Woods, LLC generously donated an easement for 1.5 miles of new trail along
the Stimson Mountain ridgeline. The club purchased an
easement from the Town of Bolton which allows construction of a footbridge and trail on town land on the north
bank of the Winooski River.
• Meltzer Tract Sustainable Forestry Project demonstrates
forestry and recreation compatibility: A third successive year of timber harvesting on GMC land continued to
­improve forest health while generating revenue from the
sale of sawlogs and producing firewood to heat GMC’s
­Visitor Center and Back Forty Lodge for several winters.
• Boundary Maintenance: Field staff completed the
­clearing, repainting, and tagging of boundaries of the
Karabaron, Davis, and Toof parcels on the Long Trail State
Forest in Johnson.
Stewardship
In fy 2012, GMC a­ ssumed management responsibility of the
entire Appalachian Trail in Vermont, increasing the number of
volunteer corridor monitors to 69, overseeing 35,000 acres of
conserved lands on the Long Trail/Appalachian Trail Systems.
• Deerfield Wind Project in southern Vermont sets
­precedent: GMC collaborated with the Appalachian Trail
Conservancy to appeal the Deerfield wind project – the
first utility-scale wind installation on National Forest land
in the country—on the grounds that the developer should
be required to use best available mitigation technology and
practices—especially with regard to night lighting. Green
Mountain National Forest had approved the proposed
development of fifteen 450-foot-tall turbines surrounding the existing 200-foot wind towers in Searsburg. The
Federal Aviation Administration requires aircraft warning
lights on the taller towers. GMC’s efforts led the Forest

Members, Sections & Volunteers
T
he Green Mountain Club welcomed 1,933 new ­voting
members in fiscal year 2012, maintaining the 10,000member mark reached in fy 2011. Volunteers logged an
impressive 23,012 hours last year, both on and off trails. One
hundred thirty-two hikers completed the entire Long Trail
and received end-to-end certificates.
Several major gatherings of
club members took place:
• 101st Annual Meeting, June 11, 2011: Hosted by the
­Ottauquechee Section, this gathering was held at Camp
Plymouth State Park on Echo Lake, Plymouth. President
Marge Fish announced the achievement of GMC’s 10,000
member goal, a major accomplishment. Marge introduced
our new Executive Director, Will Wiquist, hired to succeed
Ben Rose. Richard Windish, former GMC President and
current chair of the Legal and Nominating Committees and
John Page, member of the Executive, Legal and Stewardship Committees, received President’s Awards. Harris and
Jan Abbott, long-time, exceptionally active and devoted
club members, were presented with an Honorary Life
Membership.
• Second annual Mud Season
Celebration and Egg Hunt:

and parents celebrated
spring by searching for eggs
(donated by Laughing Moon
Chocolates) hidden on GMC’s
campus - a fun, low-elevation
activity during mud season.
• 16th Annual Snowshoe
­Festival, February 4, 2012:
Over 150 people assembled at
the Visitor Center to join in
the winter fun. We celebrated
the season with guided snowshoe tours to area trails and
peaks, children’s activities,
educational workshops, nature
walks, live music, refreshments, and a raffle.
• Annual Volunteer Appreciation Picnic, September
17, 2011: More than 60 volunteers, members, and staff
gathered at the Fire Rescue Squad building in London­
derry to celebrate and thank our dedicated volunteers.
One hundred twenty-two stalwart volunteers received
awards recognizing their vital contributions to GMC. Steve
Larose, Chair of the Publications Committee and member
of the Marketing Committee, was named Volunteer of the
Year. Green Mountain Valley School in Waitsfield, whose
students worked with the club to tear down and remove
Watson Camp, was named Group of the Year.
• Sections continue to do a great job. Our fourteen local
sections hosted events, recruited new GMC members and
volunteers, led outings and maintenance trips, and more.
The Ottauquechee Section had a big year as they assumed
trail maintenance responsibility for the Appalachian Trail
between Woodstock and Norwich.

Adult Education
Sixteen outdoor skills workshops attracted over 160 participants: Topics included SOLO Wilderness First Aid, End-toEnder Workshop, Corridor Monitoring, Crosscut Sawyer
Workshop, Map and Compass, and Cold Weather Trekking.
James P. Taylor Outdoor Adventure Series attracted 500
­attendees to seventeen presentations. GMC’s inspirational
­adventure media series commemorated its 20th anniversary
with a special Taylor Series event at St. Michael’s College
in Colchester. The college’s Outing Club along with GMC’s
­Burlington Section hosted noted mountaineer and author
­David Roberts as he recounted the hardest climb of his life:
the southeast face of Mount Dickey in the Central Alaskan
Range in Denali National Park and Preserve.
Youth Education
Young Adventurers Club hosts 10 trips: A GMC program
­designed to get kids six and under and their parents outdoors
to hike, play, learn, and make friends, the Young Adventurers
Club was founded by the club’s Montpelier Section.

The website provides over twenty
outdoor activities for kids, a list
of suggested hikes, resources, and
a forum for educators to share
information.
Four educational videos created
and available for viewing on the Green Mountain Club YouTube channel and the Long Trail Bound website: Introduction
to Vermont’s Long Trail; Vermont’s Alpine Ecosystem; Hiking
Guidelines; and The Ten Essentials of Safe Hiking.
GMC Summer Wilderness Camp teaches kids outdoor skills:
GMC education staff partnered with the Waterbury Recreation
Department to offer a summer camp for pre-teens. The kids
learned important outdoor skills and then ventured out on a
two-day hike in the Green Mountains.
Group Outreach Program c­ onnected with more than 20
­organizations: VHCB AmeriCorps member Nika Meyers
­assisted 54 groups with
their Long Trail backpacking plans, advising them
on practices to reduce
their i­mpact. A total of
15 groups, including 168
volunteers, participated in
service trips on the Long
Trail and side trails.

Financial Report
T
he Green Mountain Club finished the fiscal year ending
April 30, 2012, with an operational surplus for the fourth
year in a row.
Net assets increased by 4%. The value of our endowment
­ eclined from $3.88 million to $3.68 million as a result of investd
ment losses, despite continued deposits of capital c­ ampaign
pledges and other contributions. The bright side to the situation is that new contributions to the endowment were invested
at reduced prices, enabling the purchase of more shares than
would have been possible otherwise. This should benefit the
club when investment markets improve.
Assets consist of: land and easements, $2.29 million (24%);
endowment funds, $3.68 million (38%); headquarters, field
housing, and the Lamoille River bridge, $2.61 million (27%);
­remaining pledges receivable from the capital campaign,
$255,894 (3%); and cash, accounts receivable, prepaid expenses
and inventory, $767,353 (8%).
The operational surplus was $288,017, a significant increase
from last year. Bequests to the Club’s endowment and contributions toward bridging the Winooski River and associated
trail relocation accounted for the surplus. Operational income
increased by 1.7% while expenses decreased by 8.0%. More
than 80% of the club’s expenditures continue to be in direct
support of the Long Trail System, Northeast Kingdom Trails,
and member services. E
­ ducation, fundraising, and administration account for the rest.
In conclusion, the club finished fiscal year 2012 on a sound
financial footing, apart from adverse conditions in investment
markets. Fiscal year 2013 is likely to present a greater challenge,
as government support for trail construction and maintenance
on state and federal lands continues to diminish. The effort
to relocate the Long Trail and bridge the Winooski River will
also be a major financial challenge. The club’s board believes
fundraising for the project will be successful, but the centuryold dream of bridging the river must be made reality even if
targeted fundraising does not quite meet the cost.

Communications and Publications
T
he communications department continued to boost the club’s online presence, relay
current information to the public, and enhance the sense of community among
Vermont hikers through GMC’s website, e-Blaze electronic newsletter, and Facebook
and Twitter platforms. GMC now publishes and sells 14 books, 5 maps, and a poster.
The club’s popular print magazine, the Long Trail News was published quarterly and 10
club sections published their own print newsletters.
Accomplishments
• Club’s first-ever Marketing Plan implemented: Focused on GMC brand awareness
and the connection between hiking in Vermont and supporting the club.
• Online audiences grow: Strengthening this demographic has been one major factor
in maintaining excellent donation and membership/renewal rates for the club. GMC
reached an audience of 9,500 people with each e-Blaze, over 4,500 via Facebook, and
approximately 1,500 on Twitter. Electronic communications are helping GMC connect
with new and younger audiences.
• More visitors welcomed: The number of guests stopping by the Visitor Center
­increased from last year. A rack card with a merchandise ­discount ­coupon for our
store was created and distributed to some of Vermont’s ­busiest ­welcome centers.
• Communications Forum held at Visitor Center: The second annual communications
forum for GMC volunteers on best practices for outreach in the field and at events, using digital technology, effective press relations, and more.
• Publication updates and additions: We updated our Long Trail
Guide: Hiking Vermont’s High Ridge, 27th edition and Day Hiker’s
Guide to Vermont: Exploring the Green Mountain State, 6th edition.
The club published a new waterproof, pocket-sized map: Killington
Area Hiking Trail Map with Ascutney & Okemo.

Facilities
I
n fall 2011, GMC publicly celebrated the
club’s ability to produce 100% renewable ­
energy on-site:
• Photovoltaic solar trackers installed: Four
­additional solar trackers were installed, bringing
our generating capacity to 40,000 kwh a year.
• Biomass heating upgrade completed: A second hot water storage tank was
added to the heating system in the Visitor Center to improve efficiency.
• Bio Box installed at Back Forty Lodge (field staff common quarters):
The “Bio Box,” a “first in the state” self-contained, wood gasification heating
system, was installed to provide heat and hot water, reduce the club’s carbon
­footprint, and save on propane costs.
The biomass projects were funded by a federal grant obtained by Senator Patrick
Leahy and administered by our partners at the Vermont Department of Forests, Parks,
and R
­ ecreation. The solar tracker project was funded by the Rivendell Foundation of
­Jeffersonville, Vermont.
