Captain Peter Haskell, owner of Haskell’s Bait and Tackle,
has opened the all new “Haskell’s Outpost” in Westhampton
Beach! And just 100 steps away from the new shop, the Haskell
Charter Boat is docked and ready to take trips for the whole
family! The Haskell Charter Boat has been newly updated with
underwater and above water lighting for night-time Crabbing
and Fishing excursions in our local bays. One can expect to
drift across the biggest Blue Claw Crabs and stealthy fish as
the green underwater lights give us a view beneath our bays
that can’t otherwise be seen. As the lights attract the small fish
first, the big fish soon follow, showing us how the food chain
truly works in our estuaries. The back bays offer a calm water
and safe nighttime experience that is sure to be educational and
exciting. Be sure to ask Captain Peter Haskell for his crab cake
recipe before the trip is through and share the the bounty of our
bays with the whole family!

The main function of the Ladies Auxiliary is to provide
food and drink to the fireman during a working fire. These
are known as “Signal 8’s”. They assist the Department by
helping to prepare and serve food for dinners. In January the Auxiliary cooks and hosts a dinner at the Immaculate Conception Church in support of the food pantry and
Maureen’s Haven Homeless Project.
In September the Ladies Auxiliary assembles baskets for
the LAFASNY’s Chinese Auction Fundraiser for the Stony
Brook Burn Center. Baskets for those in need are prepared
at Thanksgiving and in December the Ladies Auxiliary
adopts a needy family. We are all excited and look forward
to our new firehouse slated for spring 2016.

he Greater Westhampton communities are famous for their Atlantic Ocean white sugar sand beaches
on the barrier island known as Dune Road. Which community you live in determines which beaches
you can actually access. The Villages of Westhampton Beach, Quogue and West Hampton Dunes
each have their own municipal beaches for their village residents while the surrounding hamlets and have
fewer free options available to them. In addition to these municipal beaches, there are ample private beach
clubs and hotel related accommodations that will offer great beach experiences in the Greater Westhampton
communities.
VILLAGE OF WESTHAMPTON BEACH
ROGERS BEACH – Full-service Main Village Beach
Pavilion just south of the Beach Lane Bridge is complete
with public restrooms, snack bar concession, changing
rooms with lockers as well as both indoor and outdoor
showers. Lifeguards are on duty during summer season.
LASHLEY BEACH @ JETTY 4 – Limited-service Village Beach
Pavilion with public restrooms and outdoor showers. This is a
preferred local surf spot with a more relaxed atmosphere also with
lifeguards on duty during the summer season.
Both of these Village of Westhampton Beach locations maintain parking lots and are accessible by permit
for Village residents at no cost. Non-resident beach stickers may be obtained at the Municipal Building on
Fridays between the hours of 4-7pm, and Saturdays from 9am to 1pm. The Village extends beach privileges
as a courtesy to taxpayers and year-round residents residing in the hamlets of Westhampton, Quiogue,
Remsenburg and Speonk for a fee. Summer renters inside the Incorporated Village’s boundaries may obtain
beach privileges for a fee. Summer renters in the hamlets of Westhampton, Remsenburg, Speonk and Quiogue
may obtain beach privileges for a fee. At no time is random parking permitted on Dune Road for public beach
access.

restored beach in the United States following years of both short-term and long-term re-nourishment. Access to
the Atlantic Ocean beach for Village residents and leaseholders ONLY is via a series of boardwalks over the dunes
throughout the village. Lifeguards are not provided and at no time is random parking permitted on Dune Road for public
beach access.
PIKE’S BEACH – is a Town of Southampton limited service beach located
in the Village of West Hampton Dunes is operational for residents and
leaseholders within the Town of Southampton as well as non-residents. It
was opened in the late 1990s after having been closed for more than 10 years.

CUPSOGUE BEACH – is a 296 acre Suffolk County barrier beach park offers
lifeguard-supervised swimming, sunbathing on white sand beaches and some
of the finest saltwater bass fishing to be had on Long Island. A food concession,
restrooms, first aid center, showers and changing rooms are all conveniently
situated at Cupsogue’s pavillion. Campers and recreational vehicles are
permitted along the access road running parallel to the outer beach. Diving
is permitted at slack tide on the bay side of the park only. Water depth is
approximately 12’. *Recreational Vehicle Permit is required for outer beach access
and camping.* Lifeguard protected 10 a.m. -5:30 p.m. Resident Parking (Green

The Post Stop Café Celebrates 35 Years
Settled along a charming stretch of Main Street in
Westhampton Beach, The Post Stop Café is celebrating
its 35th anniversary this year. Well known for good
food at reasonable prices in pleasant surroundings, Post
Stop has an interesting past. The building was the first
freestanding Post Office in Westhampton Beach. It was
built in 1914 by Postmaster (and latter, mayor) Ernest H.
Bishop. The building went through a number of changes,
but has looked basically as it does today. When the
present Post Office building was constructed in 1941, the
original building was turned over to local businessmen.
Shortly thereafter, Max Schramm purchased the building
and moved his stationery store, selling stationery in the

Over the next few years, the building was again sold,
becoming Straws Stationery, and eventually, Straws
Stationery and Luncheonette. In 1958, it was sold to
George Cobb, who opened it as Cobb’s Luncheonette.
In 1970, it was sold again to Claire Folkshiggens, who
added a bar, and named it Soho East. In 1975, it became
a Portugese Restaurant. In 1979, it became the Post
Stop café. Sandy Patterson came to work at the Post
Stop Café in 1980, and purchased it in 1982. The Post
Stop has survived another 35 years! Congratulations to
Sandy and The Post Stop Café

Her collectors are world wide and
she paints all the most memorable
places on Long Island. She also does
commissioned Portraits of homes &
gardens, Businesses, & Pets. Jo-Ann’s
latest paintings are her small Holiday paintings of Long
Island villages. Some with Santa, & children pulling a sled.
They are framed in gold or silver and they twinkle with a
crystal dust.
The cover painting has been chosen by the Westhampton
Chamber as their poster & Jo-Ann will be signing them.
She will also be displaying this original painting along with
her other long island beaches, lighthouses, & vineyards at
the Westhampton art & craft show
June 6th & 7th. You can also see her

he Westhampton Free Library is your
community center, providing a wide
spectrum of programs and services to
meet the needs of the population we serve. In
other words, the Library is your entertainment,
information and technology resource.
There is always something happening at
Westhampton Free Library. Adults can enjoy
programs such as book discussions, concerts,
lectures and computer classes. You can even
relax at a holiday tea or at any of our social activities. Our exercise classes include senior aerobics, Zumba, Pilates, Tai
Chi and Yoga. We are more than a place to exercise your mind.
On our second floor, you’ll discover the Idea Place, “where children and parents come to learn and grow”.
Programming for children and families includes: storytime; reading clubs; music and movement classes for toddlers;
cooking classes; craft workshops and much more. You can also visit the Tween Scene, an alcove that’s reserved just
for kids ages 10-12. In our Teens space, young adults can read, play video games, watch movies and visit with friends.
The Library has something to offer everyone at any age.
Our collection is diversified. Throughout the Library you will find DVDs, music
CDs, digital audio and video players, video games, magazines, newspapers,
graphic novels and of course, lots of books. Our patrons also have access to an
extensive collection of eBooks and audiobooks that can be downloaded onto
smart phones, laptops and tablet computers. If you are having trouble figuring
out how to use that electronic reading device you recently received, then visit
our LibraryGeeks at our Inspiration Bar (hours are available in the Library
newsletter). Continue your education through Universal Class, which offers
over 500 online classes all from the comfort of your own computer online on
your own time schedule.
The Westhampton Free Library has been the community’s educational hub since it opened its doors in March of 1897
with a charter granted by the State of New York and signed by Melvil Dewey, creator of the Dewey Decimal System. In
1951, our original Library Avenue building was opened and served the community for more than 100 years, providing
generations of families with books, music and programming.
In June 2010 our new state of the art Library opened its doors to the residents of Westhampton, Westhampton
Beach, Quiogue, East Moriches, East Quogue, Eastport, Remsenburg and Speonk. Our Library is beautiful and
environmentally responsible. The building features efficient lighting, occupancy sensors, high-efficiency heating and
air conditioning units, plumbing that reduces water usage by 45% and solar
panels that generate 8% of our energy.
The Westhampton Free Library is a special place where families can come
together to learn, read or just have fun. This summer we will offer hundreds
of programs. Learn more about what we will be offering in our bimonthly
newsletter that is mailed to residents or pick up a copy in the Library. Additional

Library is open Monday through Friday from 9:30 am to 10:00 pm; Saturdays

The Quogue Wildlife Refuge is a 305-acre nature preserve that is home
to diverse wildlife including some that are permanently injured and
require human care to survive. There are over seven miles of trails
where you can explore a variety of habitats including the Pine Barrens,
bogs, wetlands, a field, a tidal estuary, and the ecologically rare Dwarf
Pines. A bobcat, red fox, owls, falcons, and a bald eagle are some of the
native New York animals that have permanent injuries and are housed
in the Outdoor Wildlife Complex which can be visited any day of the
year. Our main trail is wheelchair and stroller friendly and all of the
trails can be enjoyed in every season!
Inside the Charles Banks Belt Nature Center, you will find a warm and friendly environment where you
can observe wildlife through the huge windows that overlook Old Ice Pond. A variety of exhibits, turtles,
snakes, a touch table, a children’s room, and a sitting area with a beautiful view of the pond can be enjoyed
inside the Nature Center.
The Quogue Wildlife Refuge (QWR) is having its 9h Annual Summer Gala, Wild Night for
Wildlife, on Saturday, July 18, 2015. Over 500 guests are expected, as it is our biggest fundraiser of
the year! As a non-profit organization, the Refuge relies on community support, and all donations
are tax deductible. The Refuge also offers a variety of nature related programs for all ages
throughout the year, including our 46th season of the very popular Summer Ecology Program.
For those folks who enjoy history, the Refuge has plenty of it. QWR was established in 1934 as the
Southampton Township Wildfowl Association, specifically to provide habitat for local waterfowl.
Prior to becoming a wildlife preserve, the Quogue Ice Company harvested ice on Old Ice Pond. On
the grounds you can visit the Ice Harvesting Museum that has authentic, century-old tools.
The Refuge Trails and Outdoor Wildlife Complex are open every day from sunrise to sunset.
Nature Center Building is open Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Weekends from 11:00 A.M. – 4:00 P.M.
