WELCOME
SHERRY ARCHIBALD
Welcome to ArtsMarket 2015On behalf of the North Carolina Presenters Consortium, it’s my privilege
to welcome you to
ArtsMarket 2015, the superlative biennial showcase conference developed
and sponsored
through the partnership of the North Carolina Presenters Consortium and
the North Carolina
Arts Council. It’s where professional development exists, bookings materialize
and
relationships are built.
Only eight years into this industry, I have to admit, I had no idea how fortunate
we are in North
Carolina to work in a state that has such a positive reputation in the arts.
As my opportunity to
travel for work has increased over the last year, I’ve repeatedly heard the
same message from
colleagues in other states, “OH! You’ve got the really good consortium
!” and “How do you get
so many bookings to work?” It’s an easy answer, and one that has developed
because of YOU!
“It’s collaborations without competiveness.” Thanks to each of you, YOU
are presenters,
artists, service vendors and agents who create an environment of shared
success, relationships
and cooperation.
The foundation of this success comes from the partnership of our hosts,
the North Carolina Arts
Council and the North Carolina Presenters Consortium. Please join me
in thanking the Board of
Directors and staff of these two illustrious organizations; their hard work
and preparation has
been unwavering. We also express our sincere gratitude to our Executive
Director, Susan
Heiserman, the ArtsMarket staff, volunteers; and the outrageously fun
and incredibly skilled
staff of the Carolina Theatre. Their preparation has created an environme
nt that breathes
professionalism and creativity.
I’ve been affectionately told by friends and colleagues that I “live in Candyland
,” that my
outlook on life consists of unicorns and rainbows. It seems to fit my perspectiv
e of ArtsMarket
too. For me, ArtsMarket is that pot of gold that supports my goal of connecting
artists and
audiences. So join me in Candyland…grab your booking calendar, a few
colorful sprinkles and
saddle up your own unicorn. You’ll find great talent, a hospitable spirit
and comradeships that
are second to none.
Sincerely,
Sherry Archibald
Paramount Theatre Director, Goldsboro
President, North Carolina Presenters Consortium

FUN FACTS
17 days after General Lee surrendered at Appomattox in 1865, Union General William
Sherman and Confederate General Joseph E. Johnston met to negotiate the Confederacy’s
surrender in Durham—and officially ended the Civil War.
Around the turn of the 20th century, the Parrish Street neighborhood in Durham was dubbed
“Black Wall Street” because of the many enterprising African-Americans who built hugely
successful businesses.
Dr. James E. Shephard founded Durham’s North Carolina Central University as the first
publicly-supported liberal arts college for African-Americans in 1910.
One of the earliest sit-ins of the Civil Rights movement took place in Durham on June 23,
1957, when seven African-American men entered the Royal Ice Cream Parlour and sat in
the “white-only” booths.
Duke University was originally called Trinity College, until in 1924 it received a generous
dose of philanthropic support from the Duke family and the name was changed in their
honor.
The Research Triangle Park is one of the most prominent high-tech research and development
centers in the U.S., employing over 60,000 people for 190 different companies, and the
Triangle area has one of the highest per capita concentrations of PhDs in the nation.
Listed five times in the top 5 in Pollstar magazine’s annual worldwide theater attendance
rankings, DPAC is currently the #4 ranked theater in the U.S.

ABOUT DURHAM
A BUNCH OF BULL
One of Durham’s legacy nicknames is the “Bull City,” now signified by a full-size, bronze
statue in the City Center District of Downtown. But the nickname isn’t related to livestock.
John Green of the Blackwell Tobacco Company named his product “Bull” Durham Tobacco
after seeing it used on containers of Coleman’s Mustard, which Green mistakenly thought
was produced in Durham’s Sister City, Durham, England. By the time James B. Duke and
the American Tobacco Company purchased Blackwell in 1898, Bull Durham was the most
famous trademark in the world.
It sparked such popular phrases as “bullpen” (from a Bull Durham ad painted behind
the Yankees’ dugout) and “shooting the bull” (most likely from chewing tobacco). The
famous bull’s image was painted all over the world, including on the Great Pyramid of
Egypt! Today, the endearing term lives on symbolizing Durham’s colorful past and enduring
entrepreneurial spirit. –Museum of Durham History

as a compelling and captivating live performer. In 2014, Nnenna starred in the critically

OPENING RECEPTION
PAPERHAND PUPPET
INTERVENTION
ince 1998, Paperhand Puppet Intervention directors Donovan Zimmerman and Jan
Burger have used cardboard, cornstarch, bamboo, your old house paints and other
assorted junk (treasure to them!) to create incredible giant puppets, masks, shadow plays
and performances for all ages. The folks at Paperhand Puppet Intervention tell stories,
beat drums, sew cloth, get sweaty, push boundaries and carry heavy things to help make
the world a better place. Their parades, pageants, and performances are celebrations for
everyone to enjoy!
Paperhand Puppet Intervention’s mission is to use diverse styles of puppetry and artistic
expression to create works that inspire, promote social change and are deeply rewarding
for all involved.
Throughout the year they are deeply steeped in the community and take part in public
celebrations, parades, weddings, civil support (“interventions”) and general acts of
vivacity! They also create learning opportunities, host workshops and spread knowledge of
the great world of puppetry.

HOST THEATRE
THE CAROLINA THEATRE
P
resenting arts and film programming since
1926, the Carolina Theatre has been
Downtown Durham’s majestic showplace for
nearly a century. For more than two decades,
the nonprofit Carolina Theatre of Durham, Inc.
has operated the downtown historic concert
and performing arts venue, which is owned by
the City of Durham.
The Carolina Theatre includes historic 1,000seat Fletcher Hall and two modern cinemas, seating 233 and 49 respectively, which were
built during a major restoration and expansion in the early 1990s.
The Star Series is the Carolina Theatre’s signature series of live concerts, comedy and
other performances. In 2014-15, the Star Series featured 86 performances in Fletcher Hall
including Morrissey, Rhiannon Giddens, David Crosby, Trombone Shorty and many others.
The Carolina Theatre began presenting live performances in a new Club Carolina staging
concept in 2014. During the Club Carolina Series shows, Fletcher Hall is transformed from a
1,000-seat venue to a cozy, flexible space with a club aesthetic that accommodates fewer
than 500 guests.
Newly introduced for the Carolina Theatre’s 2015-16 season and in conjunction with its
90th Anniversary, Series ’26 is the biggest commitment the organization has ever made to a
performing arts program. It successfully launched in October 2015 with an evening of music
from jazz pianist Chick Cora and bluegrass legend Bela Fleck.
The Carolina Theatre Arts Discovery Educational Series complements classroom curriculum
with captivating on-stage performances that engage more than 15,000 students from
more than 15 counties throughout North Carolina. The program is subsidized by grants and
sponsorships that enable affordable prices for all students and reductions for Title 1 schools.
The Carolina Theatre hosts more than 2,500 film screenings each year. The North Carolina
Gay & Lesbian Film Festival is the largest of the organization’s many film festivals,
retrospectives and exclusive special programs.
In addition to performances presented by the nonprofit, the Carolina Theatre hosts more
than 50 rental events each year by local nonprofits and national commercial clients. Among
the major tenants utilizing the Theatre on an annual basis are the Full Frame Documentary
Film Festival, Durham Savoyards and the Chamber Orchestra of the Triangle.
Bob Nocek has served as President & CEO of the Carolina Theatre of Durham, Inc. since July,
2010. Scott Harmon, a Partner at Center Studio Architecture in Durham, is currently the
Chairman of the Board of Trustees.

“My bandmates like to laugh and carry on like siblings...I had been
teasing one of the horn players about playing poorly and sounding like
keys were missing from his horn. I remarked that I could still play better
than he, even if I broke a bass string. Sure enough, as soon as we started
that performance…POP! (insert laughter…)” –John Brown

NANO STERN
Poet/singer-songwriter/activist Nano Stern is widely recognized as the voice of
his generation - outspoken, passionate and experimental, topping charts and
leading marches for freedom and equality across South America. His Indie-FolkRock-Jazz sound brilliantly layers indigenous, African, and European elements
into a sound all his own, humbly bringing audiences to tears and to their feet.
Coined “the best young Chilean songwriter of his generation” by Joan Baez,
Nano is agile across a range of instruments and languages. His live performances
are gripping and inspiring. Highly acclaimed as a recording artist, his new album
Mil 500 Vueltas was digitally released in July (hit #1 iTunes mainstream in Chile)
and physically released September 11th in the USA. The recording features Joan
Baez and Jorge Drexler among many others.
“The earliest inspiration I remember that steered me toward the
performing arts was being taken by my mother to see an orchestral concert
when I was very young. My older brother was supposed to go with her, but
he didn’t want to, so she took me. From that day on I knew I was going to
be a musician.” –Nano Stern

THE BILLY JONAS BAND
Throw out the rules when Billy Jonas hits the stage! It’s a musical conversation…
a sonic celebration…a splendiferous gathering of old and young, because at a
Billy Jonas show, the ensemble is…everyone. Billy’s creative and interactive
performances enchant and inspire folks from all walks of life — touching hearts,
souls, and minds world-wide. Billy’s music is a “neo-tribal hootenanny” of
original voice and percussion-based songs with a generous dose of audience
participation. The music mixes conventional instruments (guitar, bass, marimba)
with homemade creations (buckets and barrels, keys and cans, bells and body
percussion). It’s spirited, straightforward music that is accessible to anyone
and everyone. Making innovative use of found objects, Billy and his band help
audiences discover the music within common items…and within themselves. The
big-tent festival quality of Billy’s music facilitates connection and community
while fostering inspiration and more importantly…FUN!
“The funniest thing that ever happened on stage occurred at the White House in 2010, when a relatively new-on-the-scene artist named Justin
Bieber opened for us. When he came off stage at the end of his set, our
singer Ashley Jo said: ‘wow -- he’s so short!’ to which Bieber’s manager
Scooter said ‘SHHHH!!!! He’s sensitive about that.” –Billy Jonas

vocal quartet Women of the World. The 2014 Harmony Sweepstakes National
Champions, nominee for the 2013 Boston Music Awards and 2014 Independent
Music Awards, Women of the World has toured extensively in North America and

ideologies of women throughout the world has featured performances at Carnegie
Hall, Blue Note Jazz Club, Boston Symphony Hall, and The Kennedy Center.
“A presenter impacted the artists we are today because she told us that
we have not only a musical responsibility, but a most important one:
a cultural responsibility. And that by making music together and being
from different parts of the world, we are a living, vibrant proof that the
people of the world can play, sing, and work together in love

JOSHUA LOZOFF
LIFE IS MAGIC
Joshua Lozoff has been studying and sharing mentalism and magic around the
world for over fifteen years. He regularly performs publicly, and at corporate
and private functions throughout the U.S. and abroad. Before turning his
attention to magic, Joshua was a professional film and television actor, including
a notable recurring role as Gino Tortelli on Cheers, and as Logan in the movie
Clueless. After years as a professional actor, Joshua left Hollywood to regain
his sanity. While traveling through South America, a chance encounter with a
street magician sparked a new passion, and Joshua began his training. Traveling
the world, Joshua studied with master magicians on several continents, and
then began sharing his craft with others. Last year, Joshua logged over 200
performances; at events ranging from performing arts venues and college shows,
to corporate banquets and gala balls.
“My earliest inspiration I remember that steered me toward the performing
arts was seeing Bruce Springsteen. I remember thinking, ‘I don’t want to be
a rock star, but whatever I do, I want to give 100% of myself in every show.’
To this day, right before I step onstage, I tell myself, ‘this audience is the
only audience that matters.’” –Joshua Lozoff

The Barefoot Movement is anything but your standard bluegrass band. In a
typical show, you’ll hear elements of bluegrass, blues, folk, rock, country and
pop through their narrative lyrics, tight three-part harmonies, hot instrumental
riffs, lilting blues scales and catchy vocal hooks. While their top-notch musicianship can speak for itself, as seen by their 2014 Momentum Award from the
International Bluegrass Music Association (IBMA), it’s their witty banter and
onstage chemistry that makes a stage of any size feel like home. This unique
trifecta of skill, innovation and charisma has not gone unnoticed. In their
young career, they have been featured at festivals across the country, earned
a coveted place on tour with The Milk Carton Kids, and performed onstage
with The Carolina Chocolate Drops, Steve Earle, The Duhks and Del McCoury.
In 2014, the US Government selected them as cultural Ambassadors for their
international Arts Envoy program.
“The funniest thing that ever happened to us on stage was when a goat
literally ate our set list. As you can probably imagine, we’ve played
some interesting venues. I think we still have the half eaten set list
somewhere. That goat is bound for stardom. He totally stole the show.”

“The funniest thing that ever happened on stage was when Darin surprised
me with a huge arrangement of flowers for my birthday. I accepted them
and got so caught up in the moment, I began to thank everyone as though
I was making an award speech. Everyone began to crack up and Darin said,

equally transfixed by the original scores as well as (what I later came

BALSAM RANGE
Founded in 2007, Balsam Range consists of five friends with unique experiences
and backgrounds that blend together effortlessly to form their distinctive sound,
making a definite mark in the Bluegrass and Acoustic music world. Tim Surrett
delivers entertaining MC work as well as seasoned lead and harmony singing,
bass playing, and he occasionally moves his talents to the resonator guitar.
Buddy Melton is one of the most gifted tenor voices in bluegrass and Americana
today; his range and tones largely give Balsam Range its identifying sound. Caleb
Smith has been called “one of the top young guns of guitar;” his envied guitar
style pairs perfectly with his energetic power singing. Darren Nicholson is one
of the most gifted mandolin players and harmony singers ever to come from the
Southern Mountains. Marc Pruett plays traditional three finger banjo in intuitive
and powerful ways, blending and complementing the influences in the band of
jazz and bluegrass…country and gospel…and swing and old-time.
“The first thing that we always seem to notice when we arrive at a venue
is the friendliness of the staff. Fortunately in the performing arts world
most of the venue staff are friendly and helpful, which makes a huge

people to tears, laughter, and back again. As a musically geared child, I
learned the most about performance by watching the way he lived and
communicated through the art of gospel.” –Majesty Rose

PUSH
PHYSICAL THEATRE
Seeing award-winning PUSH Physical Theatre is like watching a live-action
movie. These masters of physical storytelling inspire awe with physical illusions
and gravity-defying, dance-infused acrobatics. It’s cool, it’s athletic, it’s a
perfect metaphor-in-motion: the narratives of our lives played out with hope,
strength and optimism; the strength of the human soul expressed by the power
of the human body. A grant from the Farash Foundation enabled a collaboration
with the National Institute for the Deaf and Rochester Institute of Technology,
during which PUSH created “Red Ball,” using iPad technology. Collaboration with
composer Ricardo Zohn-Muldoon for the Pulitzer nominated Cantata “Comala”
resulted in performances in Mexico at the Cervantino Festival as well as a US
tour. PUSH Physical Theatre became the finalist on truTV’s National series,
Fake Off. The knock-out performance competition was judged by Actor/Dancer
Harry Shum, Jr., pop star Rozonda “Chilli” Thomas and renowned choreographer
Michael Curry.
“As an artist I could quite happily perform in my living room to no one
at all. But that art would always be incomplete. The hard work that
venues do to provide a space filled with people adds a vital ingredient
that turns the art into something transcendent: A conversation!”

Four headliners. One stage. Celebrating our differences one joke at a time. Why
this title? Because at some point in our career…each of us has been accused of
not being true to our heritage…our culture…and our profession. Too Black for one
venue. Not Black enough for another. But, funny is funny. Right? We are here to
celebrate our individualism. Our motto: Be yourself. Because everybody else is
already taken. Join us as we chip at the walls of racial and social stereotypes.

UNIQUE. TALENTED!
“When arriving at the venue the first thing I notice is the buzz. I listen
for specific sounds that reveal the tone of the room. The light chatter,
the random bursts of laughter, the house music, the wine glasses and
finally the introduction that directly precedes the anticipating silence of
undivided attention.” –Billy D. Washington

Michael Cleveland is one of the premier bluegrass fiddlers of his generation and
with 9 International Bluegrass Music Association (IBMA) Fiddle Player of the Year
awards to his credit, he’s one of the most celebrated fiddlers in the history of the

innovating the bluegrass tradition has never been brighter.
“The first thing I remember that steered me toward the performing arts

KOZM
With masterful skill and unstoppable intensity, KOZM creates a rich musical
landscape featuring a fusion of styles including Latin, jazz, classical and
traditional folk. Pushing their instruments beyond the usual limits, KOZM’s
acoustic guitar and violin channel a host of other instruments to produce a result
that must be heard to be believed. Tom Farrell (guitar) and Javier Orman (violin)
of KOZM have been called “avant-sonic acrobats” by LA Weekly and “exceptional
genius” by I Am Entertainment Magazine. On stage, this firebrand duo takes no
prisoners. They harness the raw energy of a rock band by wildly stretching their
instruments beyond any traditional limits, mixing and engineering their unique
sounds like two mad scientists. Their instruments become irrelevant and what’s
left is evocative, powerful music.

SHAUN HOPPER
Acoustic “fingerstyle” guitar wizard Shaun Hopper is at first glance an unassuming
presence, a true southern gentleman whose humility stands in stark contrast to
the prodigious talents he unveils on stage as an unparalleled master of the fretboard. Merging complex melodies, harmonies and bass lines along with a oneof-a-kind mix of percussive elements, he captivates everyone within earshot.
Whether his listeners are guitar enthusiasts or not matters little; within a few
seconds they soon realize that they are listening to a true virtuoso. Hopper’s
original compositions and arrangements of pop tunes are infused with all the
cutting edge techniques and flavorings embraced by the new breed of YouTube
sensations, including influences like Adam Rafferty, Andy McKee and Don Ross.
Yet, it is his traditional and schooled “approach” to music which keeps him

April Verch steps, sings, and fiddles with a fresh and feisty approach to deep North
American traditions. Touring the world to share songs from her milestone 10th

for Christina Aguilera, Katharine McPhee, Allen Stone and other amazing artists.
As an actress, Jackie has guest starred on It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, The
Sopranos, House of Lies, Castle and many more. She co-stars in “Sisters” with
Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, out Christmas 2015.
“The funniest thing that ever happened to me on stage was when I heard,
‘#44. Fried chicken sandwich and spicy fries. Your order is up.’ Yeah, I
sometimes played in cafeterias at the beginning of my career.”

AL STRONG &
THE FRESH FIVE
Since being introduced to jazz music at the age of 15, Al Strong has worked
diligently to master and refine his musical passions. Raised in Washington, DC,
Strong undoubtedly carries an affinity for dance music of all disciplines, which
carries over into his sound and demeanor. Described as being “among those leading
Durham jazz into a resurgence” (The Independent – Sylvia Pfeiffenberger), he is
an integral figure in the current jazz scene. In addition to performing for artists
such as Branford Marsalis and Aretha Franklin, you can hear Al Strong’s sound on
a number of other projects available for distribution. These artists include Clay
Aiken, The Foreign Exchange, and many others. Strong also balances his passion
for music performance with adjunct teaching responsibilities at North Carolina
Central University, as well as festivals, shows, and summer jazz camps with his
non-profit organization, The Art of Cool Project.
“My earliest inspiration that steered me toward the performing arts
was meeting Wynton Marsalis for the second time at The North Sea Jazz
Festival. Casually strolling down a hallway, me and my high-school bandmates shouted “Hey Wynton!” to get his attention. He was happy to see
us and remembered meeting us a month before at a masterclass in the
States.” –Al Strong

SCOTT AINSLIE
Scott Ainslie is a traditional musician with expertise in Southern Appalachian
fiddle and banjo traditions as well as Piedmont and Delta Blues. He specializes
in performing and presenting programs on the European and African roots of
American music and culture. Armed with a variety of instruments – vintage
guitars, fretless gourd banjo, a one-string, homemade cigar box guitar and
historical personal anecdotes, Scott brings the history, roots music, and sounds
of America alive. He has spent more than 30 years looking for the right story,
the right facts and history, to introduce a song and to give that song a chance
to wake and breathe like a living thing. On stage, Ainslie is a masterful and
thoughtful historian, storyteller, and musician. His performances present music
and stories that will delight the ear, awaken the mind, and satisfy the heart.
“My mother found me at the piano picking out melodies from the records
she played when I was three. I’ve been a musician all my life. It was
Virginia Bluesman John Jackson turned me into a guitar player though.
He played three songs in the middle of a Mike Seeger concert. I started
playing a month later. It was 1967.” –Scott Ainsile

DONALD SINTA
QUARTET
The Donald Sinta Quartet, First Prize Winner of the 2013 CAG Victor Elmaleh
Competition, has earned praise from audiences and critics alike for its virtuosic
performances, compelling recordings and distinctive repertoire. Hailed as “…a
tight-knit ensemble exploding with power and virtuosity and an un-concealable
ambition to connect with its newly found listeners” (Boston Musical Intelligencer),
the DSQ performs entirely from memory, which strengthens an already palpable
connection with its audiences. Named for its mentor, legendary University of
Michigan Saxophone Professor Donald Sinta, the Quartet’s other competition
successes include the Alice Coleman Grand Prize at the 2013 Coleman Chamber
Music Competition and First Prize in the 2012 North American Saxophone
Alliance Quartet Competition. The Donald Sinta Quartet’s repertoire is diverse,
ranging from commissions by today’s emerging composers to standards from
the saxophone quartet literature to transcriptions by master composers such as
Dvorak, Schubert and Shostakovich.
“A presenter impacted the artists we are today because she took a risk
on a young, unconventional classical ensemble, and invited us to her
prestigious summer music festival, allowing us to perform alongside some
of the finest musicians in the country. She encouraged us to do our very
own thing in the chamber music world, and that one festival engagement
has led to several others.” –Zach Stern

MIKE WILEY
DAR HE: THE STORY OF
EMMETT TILL
North Carolina-based actor/playwright Mike Wiley’s one-person juggernaut Dar
He tells the story of the hate crime that set the American civil rights movement
in motion. In 1955, a 14-year-old black Chicago youth named Emmett Till boarded
a train in Chicago to visit relatives in Mississippi. He stepped off that train into
a world he couldn’t understand, a world of thick color lines and unspeakable
taboos that would cost him his life. This riveting one-man play by Mike Wiley
chronicles the murder, court trial and unbelievable confession of the men who
killed young Emmett Till. Using documentary theatre in its purest form, Wiley
portrays more than two-dozen characters in this powerful, riveting performance.
Mike Wiley Productions is now touring eight original documentary dramas built
on pivotal moments of a shared history of America. All plays are offered in fulllength and abbreviated student versions, with an audience talkback included at
all performances.
“The first thing I always seem to notice when I arrive at a venue is the
open invitation of the bare stage. A blank, black canvas waiting patiently
to be drawn upon. Knowing that — like a sand castle on the edge of an
ocean — what I want to create can be magical, but momentary and one
of a kind. Maybe within memory is where it finds its life.” –Mike Wiley

BOREALIS STRING
QUARTET
The Vancouver-based Borealis quartet was founded in 2000 and is regarded today
as one of the leading ensembles in the world of its generation. Mentors include
Josef Gingold, Rostislav Dubinsky (Borodin), Andrew Dawes (Orford) and Emerson
String Quartet.
A recipient of many awards, the Borealis’s unprecedented success at a televised
national competition resulted in a performance for the Prime Minister of Canada
at the Parliament Hill in Ottawa for an audience of over 75,000. Since then,
the Borealis has toured extensively worldwide to great acclaim. Their many
recorded CDs also feature music especially written for Borealis. The quartet
members are in residence and on faculty at the Kwantlen Polytechnic University.
“You know when you hit a gong it takes a few seconds for the sound
to resonate? As a kid my first experience was so memorable, hitting
that gong with all my might without much of a sound…until, wow! It
nearly knocked me over! That was my earliest inspiration I remember
that steered me toward the performing arts!” –Yuel Yawney, violinist

SHANA TUCKER
CHAMBERSOUL CELLO & SONGS
Shana Tucker‘s “ChamberSoul” weaves jazz, classical, soulful folk and acoustic
pop into a hybrid musical tapestry. Whether center stage at distinctive Spivey
Hall or in a club groove of Cliff Bell’s in Detroit or in front of students at an
inner city school – the essence of lyrical storytelling is consistently revealed.
Inspired through early years of public school music, she later studied at Howard
University and CUNY-Brooklyn College Conservatory of Music. She released her
debut CD in 2011. A resulting NPR interview brought a call from Cirque du Soleil,
leading to her current role as featured cellist and mezzo-soprano in the worldclass musical ensemble for Cirque’s gravity-defying production KÀ at the MGM
Grand. As she weaves cross-country touring into her full-time role with Cirque,
Shana Tucker inhales deeply with every turn. She “packed up to join the circus”
and never looked back. International airplay of her recording SHiNE is now
winning fans around the globe.
“A presenter impacted the artist I am today because he took a moment
to share with me an invaluable perspective on timing and how to move
the crowd: Everybody wants to be on the edge of their seat. Bring them
there, then leave them hanging. Give them just enough to remember
your magic; they will seek and follow for a chance to experience more
of your “good thing”. If you give too much, however, they’ll forget the
goodness and only remember that you disregarded their time, no matter
how good your show was.” –Shana Tucker

MIKE FARRIS
Mike Farris is a musical renaissance man. He’s toured as lead singer for the
Southern Rock Band Screaming Cheetah Wheelies, and following the demise of
blues and rock legend Stevie Ray Vaughn, as the lead singer for the incomparable
blues band, Double Trouble. In his solo career he began to rediscover and
reinterpret traditional black spiritual music by adding his own mix of vintage
southern soul. For his efforts, Farris won the prestigious Americana Music Award
for Best New & Emerging Artist, a Dove Award for Best Traditional Gospel Album
of the Year and a 2015 GRAMMY® award for Best Roots Gospel Album.
“My earliest inspiration has to be my dad’s record collection. He only had
5 or 6 records in his ‘collection’ but they were highly prized possessions
in our home. Weekends were special because that’s when the music would
fill the house and everyone would just feel a sense of joy! Through those
moments I became very aware of the magic of music and its ability to
bring hope, love, joy, and even compassion to people’s lives.” –Mike Farris

ATLANTIC STEPS
Atlantic Steps brings the world-famous music, song and dance of Ireland’s
Atlantic region to the stage, capturing the intimacy and humor which makes
the Irish show experience so memorable. Produced by the music/dance team
of Oisín Mac Diarmada & Samantha Harvey, the show comprises an exceptional
cast of dancers and musicians from both sides of the Atlantic, centered around
the extraordinary combination of Irish step-dance (best known from Riverdance)
and an older improvisational style of dance called sean-nós. Atlantic Steps
has performed at PACs and festivals throughout Arizona, California, Florida,
Kansas, Massachusetts, Ohio, Tennessee, Michigan, New Hampshire, Texas, and
Wisconsin. 2016/17 sees a newly revamped show bringing audiences on a funfilled journey along Ireland’s Atlantic coastline exploring the songs, tunes and
dances which draw so many to this mystical landscape.
“The funniest thing that ever happened to me on stage was watching our
lead dancer fall through the top of the wooden half-barrel he was dancing
his Irish steps on, but then somehow catching his balance, much to the
relief of the NJ audience!” -Oisín Mac Diarmada

“I know exactly when I was bitten by the ‘performing bug.’ It was the 2nd
grade and my teacher was putting together a Halloween play called The
Rosy Cheeked Ghost and I was playing ‘Professor Gruesome’. It was my first
time on stage, and at the tender age of 7, I knew I wanted to do this for the

in more than a dozen countries, including her native Ukraine, the U.S., Russia,
Mexico, France, Germany, Austria, Italy, Holland and Japan. In 2013, Kiryayeva
released solo piano album “Sonatas,” recorded at New York City’s Klavierhaus
by Grammy-nominated sound engineer Patrick Lo Re. It was featured on CKWR
Radio in Ontario, Canada. Kiryayeva gave her first solo recital at age 8 and
her solo debut with orchestra at 11. She is one of few classical pianists that

on full scholarship. Her awards include First Prize winner of Italy’s Senigallia
International Competition, and top prizes in the Grace Welsh International
Competition and the California Young Artist International Competition. Kiryayeva
has been honored by Ukrainian President Leonid Kravchuk, with the State Award
for Achievements in Arts.
“The funniest thing that happened to me in a performance was walking
out on stage to discover that the piano I was about to perform on was
missing a keyboard. Apparently, the tuner forgot to put it back after
repair. In sheer desperation I uttered to my baffled audience ‘but there’s

TEN STRINGS
AND A GOAT SKIN
Hailed on two continents as “infectious” and “the best of contemporary/trad
Celtic music,” Ten Strings And A Goat Skin are a bilingual trad/folk/fusion trio,
playing Irish, Acadian, French and original creations infused with modern and
world rhythms. The band creates a fiery, contagious and unique sound with a
stage presence that leaves audiences wanting more at every show. Ten Strings
And A Goat Skin both highly respect the traditions of the music they play while
riding a wave that is redefining the roots of that music. Their original material
maintains solid traditional elements but explores rich world flavours and
textures. The results have been described as intoxicating and refreshing.
“We were impacted by a presenter who issued a paper to each volunteer
on which they inscribed which artists they didn’t want to work with again.
Those artists written down never came back, regardless of how big they
are. It taught us that volunteers have better stuff to do than put up with
our crap, so since then we try to give as much to them as they do to us.”

MATUTO
Matuto plays what they call Brazilian Bluegrass. It’s Brazilian Forró and other
musical styles from northeastern Brazil, mixed with Bluegrass and other North
American roots music. The result of this South & North American combination
is joyous dance music that feels both familiar and exotic for U.S. audiences.
Since they play in so many different types of venues (festivals, theaters, clubs,
universities, etc.), they adjust their approach from electric dance parties to
acoustic concerts with traditional Brazilian instruments. The band has been
touring for about five years, and has performed extensively across the US
and Canada. They have also toured as musical ambassadors for the U.S. State
Department to Africa and the Middle East, and have tours in the works for 2015
and 2016 to Azerbaijan, China and Thailand. The band members also love to do
extensive outreach, including workshops and residencies.
“The funniest thing that ever happened to us on stage was at Mount
Rushmore. While on tour, we stopped to make an impromptu video. First a
park ranger, who we thought was coming to shut us down, started dancing.
Soon the party was in full swing. Finally a whole crew of international
tourists posed for photos while the park ranger tweeted.” -Matuto
