CHRISTIAN AID WEEK
15th – 21st MAY 2016
During Christian Aid Week, we will be
carrying out the usual House to House
collection throughout the village.
Collectors, who will be wearing Christian
Aid collectors’ badges, will deliver the
envelopes and will return to collect them later in the week, if you wish to make a
contribution. Thank you in advance for any donations; we do appreciate that not
everyone wishes to give to this charity.

Letter from our Rector:
Dear friends,
'You can't teach an old dog new tricks' so the saying goes. I don't know how 'old' is
'old' - but I'm not sure I agree.
I have been thinking recently about how some of the things I now do all of the time I
used to find impossible, really frightening or at least a real challenge.
I used to hate public speaking and get really nervous ... now with lots of practice it just
comes naturally.
Or, I used to find driving a car incredibly confusing - now I do it without thinking. Or
as I sit at my computer typing I realise that I used to have to search for all of the
letters - now I just type - sometimes without even looking at the keyboard - I just do it
naturally - with only the occasional tryping mistake (joking!).
As we grow up, so many things become common place to us and we become more
proficient at many more things - and often wiser too. There are of course things we
can no longer do - I used to be able to touch my nose with my big toe - now, if I tried
it would almost certainly be followed by a visit to hospital! Also I don't feel the need
to do this any more .... not quite sure why I ever did?
But as we grow up we become more efficient at many tasks - even old dogs can learn
new tricks.
The Christian faith understand Christians as people who should always be seeking to
be changed - not necessarily to learn more skills - but to be people who are continually
transformed into the likeness and character of God.
So dogs can learn new tricks - and Christian dogs should always be seeking to be
transformed ever more into the people God wants us to be.
So let's recognise how we have progressed during our lives: in our thinking, in
mastering our fears and perhaps in mastering some skills - and let us seek to be the
people God wants us to be.

OUR NEW PRIEST Father Mark Lagorio comes to St Peter’s this month when
Father Martin retires from full-time work. Father Mark is at present the Catholic Priest
in Thame. Father Mark will move into the Presbytery next to the Church on the 9th &
10th May. His first weekend in charge will be 14th/15th May which is the Feast of
Pentecost
FATHER MARTIN continues to live in Eynsham and will be helping out in other local
Catholic Churches when priests are away or unwell. Father Mark has already asked him
to look after things at St Peter’s when he is away in July and October. He will also be
the Chaplain of the Immigration Detention Centre at Campsfield House in Kidlington.
Father Martin’s last Sunday will be the 8th May when we celebrate the
Ascension.
CHRISTIAN AID WEEK is the 15th-21st May. Catherine Baker (01865 881787) is
looking for people who would be prepared to deliver envelopes to streets in Eynsham
and then go back and knock on those doors to see if the people living there will make a
donation. If you do not live in Eynsham, do ask as we can put you in touch with those
arranging the Collection in your area. Some people do not like doing this because
sometimes (but rarely) people can be rude or even a bit abusive when they answer the
door. We try to think of the abuse Jesus had to take as he died for us, and then be
brave, as the work Christian Aid does to support the poor and starving of the world is
so important.
SUPPORTING SYRIAN REFUGEES IN WEST OXFORDSHIRE There will be
a meeting about this on Friday 13th May at 7.30pm in St Leonard’s Church Eynsham
when we can hear more about what is being done locally and what we can do to help.

OUR ACCOUNTS FOR 2015 show an Income of £65,887 and Expenditure of
£57,592 so thanks to your generosity the Church is in a very sound position
financially. This is why we have been able to afford to spend nearly £6000 on the new
heating for the Tolkien Room which is our small hall with lovely grounds which is
available for hire. Our thanks to all those who Gift Aid what they give to the Church.
About £20,000 of our income was given that way in 2015 enabling us to claim around
£5000 of tax back from the government to increase our income. We also had a
one-off very generous donation of £5000. Thank you.
THE CONFIRMATION OF EIGHT YOUNG PEOPLE will take place at our
Sunday Mass on 1st May. Father Martin and Ian Methley have been preparing them for
the last 6 months on Wednesday nights. Bishop William has been ill recently so we are
hoping he will be fully recovered by then to come and celebrate this Sacrament for us.

ST MARY’S CHURCH BELLS RINGING REPORT
The bells will be rung at the following services:

The bells of St Mary’s will be rung on St George’s Day, Saturday 23rd April. The
ringing coincides with the Oxford City Branch ringer’s practice.
The Oxford Diocesan Guild of Church Bell Ringers will be holding their Ringers Day
on Monday 2nd May. Towers in Newbury and the surrounding villages will be
hosting the event this year and all ringers are welcome to participate in this event.
As part of their annual outing, Stratton St Margaret’s ringers will be visiting on
Monday 30th May to ring the bells of St Mary’s Church from 4.00pm to 5.00pm.
The bells of St Mary’s will be rung on Sunday 12th June to mark the 90th Birthday of
Her Majesty the Queen.
Bell ringers across the country have been invited by the BBC to take part in their
Music Day on Friday 3rd June by ringing at 7.00pm that day.
Usual practice every Monday from 7.30pm until 9pm.
FF6 takes place on Fridays from 6pm to 7pm, except where a practice falls
immediately before a Saturday practice.

FREELAND PARISH COUNCIL - LISA’S NOTES FROM THE
PARISH COUNCIL MEETING HELD ON 21ST MARCH 2016
I would like to begin the notes this month with a mention of the beautiful display of
daffodils in the village. Every year there seems to be more and more appearing and they
really do make a huge difference. A massive thank you to the members of the
Gardening Club for planting these bulbs, they look absolutely stunning and make me so
proud to live here - keep up the good work!
Play Park development
Work on developing the Freeland Play Park has now commenced and will take
approximately 3 weeks to complete. New equipment will be added and landscaping
work will be carried out in due course after the equipment installation.
Defibrillator & CPR demonstration
Thank you to all those that attended the two defibrillator and CPR demonstrations that
were held in the Village Hall on Wednesday 30th March. Beth Elgar, Regional School
and Community Training Coordinator for St John Ambulance provided two very
informative and useful training sessions. Two pieces of useful information that arose
from the training were as follows:
1) For anyone with an iPhone or iPad, there is an AED Locator App that is worth
downloading that will tell you where your nearest defibrillator is located should you
need it (it covers all of the UK).
2) There is also a first aid app from St John Ambulance that is also worth downloading
as it gives information about how to perform CPR.
Dog’s mess
I know, I know, it’s dog’s mess AGAIN, but I am a little bit speechless about how to
express my shock and disappointment about some concerns I had raised with me this
month. A Freeland resident found a bag of dog’s mess on the windscreen of their
vehicle, which could only have got there by being thrown over their fence. I am
appalled to say the least that this should happen in our lovely village, and there is
absolutely no excuse. There are plenty of dog bins around Freeland, and for this to
happen is both shocking and downright disgusting. There have also been concerns
raised about dog’s mess being found on the playing field where sports are played.
Again this has to stop, full stop. Your co-operation with this is much appreciated.
Parish Council Elections
Since our Parish Council meeting in March, we have been notified that 10 candidates
will stand for election on Thursday 5th May for the 8 seats available on the Parish
Council. Please take a look at the village website at www.freelandoxon.co.uk or go
to the elections page on WODC website at www.westoxon.gov.uk/elections to
see who your candidates are. The names of the candidates are listed on p35 of this
Grapevine. Remember these people will be representing YOUR views as residents, so
do vote for who you would like to see represent your village on your Parish Council.
Queen’s 90th Birthday Celebrations
On a happier note, as I am sure you are all aware, a community picnic (called The Big
Lunch) is being planned to celebrate the Queen’s 90 th birthday in June.

LISA’S NOTES FROM THE ANNUAL PARISH MEETING
HELD ON 4TH APRIL 2016
There was a brilliant turn out at the Annual Parish Meeting held on Monday 4 th April –
70 residents were in attendance! A huge thank you to everyone who came along and
joined in the discussions. Quite a number of different topics were covered this year,
including:
Cricket: Simon Brown, Chairman of Freeland Cricket Club updated residents on the
fantastic achievements of the Cricket Club that has been firmly re-established in the
village.
Housing: Amy Jackson gave a brief presentation on behalf of a group of residents who
are looking at ways to support the building of appropriate and sustainable development
in Freeland.
Major planning proposals: Robert Crocker also gave a brief presentation on some
planning development proposals to potentially develop a large patch of land stretching
from the A40 at Eynsham up towards Freeland.
Play park: A brief update was given on the plans to develop the play park, and the
amended plans for the memorial garden were also shown.
It was a very positive meeting and it’s brilliant to see our residents taking an interest in
what goes on in their village. Our thanks also go to the clubs and organisations that
sent in annual reports. These are very much appreciated and are always very interesting to read – they also help keep the Parish Council and residents aware of activities
going on throughout the village.

FREELAND GARDENING CLUB
Howard Drury, our speaker on 21st March gave a very professional and comprehensive
talk with slides on ‘Berried Treasure’. He talked about berries both decorative and
edible and how some plants have 4 season interest with new leaves in spring, flowers in
summer, colourful autumn leaves and berries following in the winter.
On 25th April at 7.30pm the meeting moves to Freeland Nursery for a demonstration
on ‘How to Plant your Hanging Basket’. Baskets and plants etc. can be purchased on the
night, or we can bring our own basket for planting. Being able to do a basket under
supervision should be fun and hopefully mean there are many lovely baskets on show
this summer.
Club activities in May include a day by coach to visit to Exbury Gardens in Hampshire
on 14th May to see their superb display of Rhododendrons and Azaleas. Visitors are
very welcome, ring Brian Wildblood on 883968 for information and to book.
The meeting in Freeland Hall on Monday 23rd May at 7.30pm is one that should
interest most gardeners because Steve Brookes is passing on ‘The Greatest Gardening
Tips’. Steve is a very well known speaker who we have not had before, so we look
forward to another excellent talk. The Club Raffle of Hampers will also take place at
this meeting.
The 17,000 daffodils have made a superb show this year. The weather seems to have
made the show better than ever with a variety of species of daffodils meaning there has
been a succession of different flowers for a longer period.
The Plant and Garden item sale at each hall meeting should be picking up now that
spring is well on its way and there is plenty of new growth in evidence. Visitors very
welcome at £3 a meeting.
Information about the Club’s activities over the last year was available to read at the
Annual Parish Meeting on 4th April.

Saturday 2nd July – Save the date! An evening of music by Freeland Orchestra, along
with West Oxfordshire Winds and West Oxfordshire Clarinets, in our very own
Village Hall.
The orchestra will be playing music by Beethoven, Tchaikovsky and Mozart, whilst
WOW will entertain you with numbers from Grease and other films & musicals. WOC
will be performing a wide range of music from Bach to Beatles! We hope to see you

QUEEN’S BIG BIRTHDAY LUNCH
On Sunday 12th June, the Parish Council is holding a community picnic in
celebration of the Queen’s 90th birthday.

When? from 11.30am until 2pm on Sunday 12th June
The idea is simple: come along to the village hall, bring some food to share, and
enjoy a picnic lunch with friends and neighbours.
Whatever you’d like to bring is absolutely fine. It could be sausage rolls, a plate
of sandwiches, a quiche, a bowl of salad, or indeed, a cake!
As well as celebrating the Queen’s birthday, we’re also planning to honour
Freeland residents that are turning 90 this year. So if you know of anyone who
has turned 90 or is turning 90 this year, please do get in touch.
Hopefully the weather will be dry and sunny so we’ll be able to spread out into
the garden behind the village hall, and perhaps even onto the playing field.
We’ll need help with the event on the day (setting up, decorating, tidying up
afterwards). Please let me or a member of the Parish Council know if you’ll be
able to help out in any way.

We would like to thank everyone who supported our Easter Market, we made a
fantastic £735 of which we will donate £600 to the Parish Council towards a bench for
the village. The remainder will boost our funds to enable us to book interesting
speakers. We will plan to have a similar event in 2017 again just before Easter.
At the April meeting we learnt about a Girls Life in the Army. Gillian Cane, our
speaker, was one of the first intake of women to go through the Sandhurst experience.
We heard about her first military exercise 3 nights camping in January 1986, when the
weather was the coldest on record and snow was on the ground for months. The girls
were horrified to learn on their return from their ordeal that the men's equivalent
exercise had been cancelled due to the severity of the weather. Gillian was later to be
the first female officer in the Royal Green Jackets. Women have a non combative role
in the Army and Gillian's role was mainly in training and discipline. Gillian was a lively
and interesting speaker who now has a very different role at The Bodlean Library.
On Monday 9th May we will return to The Garden Centre to make hanging baskets
or plant containers with either flowers or herbs. We would like to take this
opportunity to thank Tim Webster and Sue Hooper for making this event possible.

THE CAKE CAFÉ AT FREELAND HALL
5th April 2016 saw the first birthday of the Cake Café. It seems
unbelievable to us that it has now been running for 12 months!
Each month there is a different selection of cakes and a savoury!
The anniversary event was well attended and I would like to thank
everyone for their support. It was lovely to see such a wide variety
of all age groups from the local community enjoying cake, coffee
and lively conversation.

Last month, I contacted publisher Wordsworth Editions to see
if they would donate some books to put in the Little Free
Library, and I was amazed when they sent us a box of 20
books! They specialise in publishing new editions of classics,
and the titles they sent us include Frankenstein, Pride and
Prejudice, and The Great Gatsby, and among others. They also
sent some children’s classics: The Railway Children, The Secret
Garden, Alice in Wonderland, Peter Pan, and The Little Prince. These 20 new books
will all be in the Little Free Library from Monday 2nd May. Help yourselves!

FREELAND CRAFT CLUB
What a lovely event the Freeland WI Easter market was. We were able to add a bit
more to our finances from our sales of craft items and look forward to the repeat
event next year.
Our next project is to produce some Twiddle Muffs .......A Twiddle Muff is a double
thickness hand muff made from odd scraps of wool, with bits and bobs - ribbons,
buttons, beads etc. attached securely inside and out. It is designed to provide a
stimulation activity for restless hands for patients suffering from dementia. They are
distributed via NHS Hospitals in the UK and the patient then gets to take them home
with them so there is always demand for more.

FREELAND CRICKET CLUB
The Under 15s and Under 13s have completed six indoor training sessions over the
past few weeks. We have seen great skill development, especially in batting thanks to
the individual technique work being undertaken by Ben Field.
We have now received the fixtures for the season.
Under 9s- 4 festival evenings, home festival to be held on a Friday evening.
Under 11s- all matches on Sunday mornings, 8 matches, 4 at home
Under 13s - home matches on Thursday evenings, 11 matches, 5 at home
Under 15s - all matches on a Monday evening, 6 matches, 3 at home
Women - all matches on Wednesday evenings, 6 matches, 3 at home
Adult cricket (mixed)- Sunday afternoons, 6 matches all at home.

Panic set in amongst those gathered at the start of this month’s ramble when we found
we were without the obligatory dog! At the last moment a gentleman and an old dog
with a white muzzle (the dog that is) were kidnapped and forced to accompany us, so
all was well.
Spring was discovered in the woods with early flowering bluebells. I was among the first
to bravely cross the rapids and forge onwards through swamps to the open plains
where we admired the views over the shire. Any followers of this article (not many)
will be shocked to hear that our lawyer, Bunnyfeather QC, has eloped with Mrs Trellis,
so at least that’s a surprise result. The bad news (possibly) is that being of a sensitive
nature I feel forced to resign next month. I’ve been thwarted and ostracized to the
extent that I simply can’t carry on and find I now desperately require therapy. (Ed notes.
Always has!)

FREELAND ALLOTMENT ASSOCIATION
The Allotment Association is now the tenant of the Parish Council, and Landlord to the
plot holders. This change in management took effect from Michaelmas 2015.
We have 36 quarter size plots all of which are occupied with three people on the
waiting list.
After a wet winter which has delayed many jobs normally done over the dormant
season, spring is in full swing and most of the plots are looking good and well
maintained.
We have a regular spring meeting for all plot holders, this year on Friday 29th April
and an AGM in September just before the new rents are due.

1st HANBOROUGH FREELAND SCOUT GROUP
As we had no report last month, this is the first time
I’ve been able to congratulate all the Beavers, Cubs,
Scouts and Explorers who completed the Winter
Challenge 2016 – an eighteen-mile hike across the
Ridgeway. Beavers and Cubs can finish at the 9-mile
point, but a massive well done to Beaver Daniel Yates,
who completed the full distance! A great effort from all involved.
1st Hanborough Freeland was represented by Matt Marais, George and Beth Soanes in
the 2016 Oxford Gang Show, which ran at the Radley College Theatre in the February
half-term. Well done guys! A fab show!
As I write this report, all the sections are preparing to go back to their meetings after
the school Easter holidays. This is a time when we get a lot of movement between the
sections with older Beavers moving up to Cubs, some Cubs up to Scouts and some
Scouts moving up to Explorers. Of course it is also a time to welcome new members
to our Scout group, and this term we welcome six new Beavers to 1 st Hanborough
Freeland.
The Beavers have enjoyed a very interesting and rewarding start to the year, including
learning to light fires using cotton wool and fire steels, making bird feeders, making
pizzas, practicing the Green Cross Code and hiking from Freeland to Hanborough.
Congratulations to Finlay Maxwell, Daniel Yates, Jameson Blackmore, Leonard Stoppani,
Daisy Edwards & Ben Hills, all of who successfully achieved their Chief Scout Bronze
Award - a great achievement.
2016 is the 100th Anniversary for the Cubs, and 1st Hanborough Freeland have a packed
programme with loads of exciting events planned, especially as the weather improves.
One of the recent highlights was bell ringing at St. Peter & St. Paul Church in Church
Hanborough. Not only were the Cubs shown how to ring hand bells, they all were also
allowed to try out the big bells too….it was more difficult than it looked!
Scouts have been busy with a programme including Emergency Aid, Fitness training and
working towards the new Creative and Skills Challenge awards.
The Scouts are also looking forward to a number of camps in the upcoming months,
including an overnight camp at Youlbury Scout Centre, Weeks Camp in Dorset during
the May half-term and the County Aqua-Camp in June.
The Explorers are concentrating heavily on the Duke of Edinburgh scheme and are
working on activities and skills towards those awards.
All sections will be represented at the annual St. George’s Parade in Witney this year,
which I will report on in the next edition.

FATHER MARK LAGORIO
My maternal and paternal grandfathers were Italian: The Lagorio and Picozzi families.
They emigrated to Birmingham and Hamilton respectively in the late 19 th Century. The
two families eventually met during the Second World War. The Picozzi’s made and sold
ice cream in Scotland; my grandfather, John Lagorio, is recorded in ‘A History of
Birmingham’ as the first in Birmingham to obtain a licence to sell ice cream publicly.
I was born in the late fifties and grew up in my home parish of St. Wilfrid’s, Castle
Bromwich, just a stone’s throw away from Oscott Seminary. I am one of five children:
My parents were devout Catholics. I was accepted for the priesthood by Archbishop
Dwyer and ordained at St Wilfrid’s. I have served in different parishes in the North,
Midlands, and South of the Archdiocese for the past twenty nine years.
I have been in my current parish of St Joseph’s, Thame, for fifteen and a half years. Although very sad to say farewell to the people I have served and loved for so long, I am
very much looking forward to getting to know the good people of Eynsham.

WYCHWOOD PROJECT
Forest Fair Volunteers Wanted
Preparations are in full swing for the next action packed Forest Fair at Cornbury Park
on Sunday 4th September. We have lots of volunteer opportunities - could you give
us a helping hand - either in the run-up to the event and/or on the day itself? We need
able assistants for every imaginable task including setting up tents, sorting and selling
books, booking entertainers, being part of the team on the entry gate, litter picking and
recycling. All Forest Fair volunteers receive free entry to the Fair - and a voucher for
refreshments in the Wychwood Project tea tent! We are also looking for someone to
help in the office for up to a day a week in the office at Eynsham.

AN INVITATION……To consider trying your hand at BOWLS
at HANBOROUGH BOWLS CLUB
Our Club is open to ALL and we welcome new members – do give it a go – you never
know!!
During May 2016 we are offering OPEN sessions for anyone who wishes to try the
game and see if they like it. All we ask is for you to bring some FLAT shoes with you –
heeled shoes can damage the Green. We will provide the Bowls (woods).
There are two afternoon sessions on Monday 9th & Friday 27th May at 2.00pm and
two evening sessions on Mondays 16th & 23rd May at 6.00pm. The Green will be
available for about 2 hours each session. Qualified coaches will be on the Green to help
and advise.
The Club plays Mixed Friendly matches, mostly at weekends, and we have a full
programme from mid-April to the end of September. We also play separate midweek
League matches for both Men and Ladies. In addition, there are informal Club roll-ups
every Monday and Friday afternoon at 2pm throughout the summer season.
SUBSCRIPTION FOR NEW MEMBERS ONLY FOR 2016 IS £30.00 IF JOINING
