Getting ready
tarting at 3 o’clock in the morning, a professional team
of hair and make-up artists transforms a hotel ballroom
into the ultimate dream spa. During their Caribbean
getaway, each of our 40 cheerleaders experiences their
own Cinderella moments as they are curled, sprayed,
pampered and made into glamorous swimsuit models.

By the pool
e all know what they say about “all work and no play”
and our ladies made the most of their downtime. At
any given moment, a gathering of Ravens Cheerleaders
could be found poolside either chatting, sunning, or engaging
in an energetic game of Bingo or volleyball.

beautiful water, Megan proves
the Caribbean Sea is no

For Megan, “Running out

WHERE WE ARE: Freeport is a 230-square-mile city on Grand Bahama Island. Established
in 1955 by the Government of The Bahamas, Freeport began as 50,000 acres of swamp and

THE CALENDAR SHOOT
O
ur cheerleaders join locals and tourists alike as they
take over the streets for Junkanoo—an energetic, colorful parade of brightly costumed people gyrating and dancing
to the rhythmic sounds of cowbells, drums, whistles, and brass.
Though reminiscent of New Orleans’ Mardi Gras and Rio de
Janeiro’s Carnival, Junkanoo, which dates back to the 16th
century, gave our ladies a modern-day opportunity to bring the
energy of Baltimore to this uniquely Bahamian event.
Courtney L. (left) and Angel P. (right) give it their all, lose
themselves in the music, and have the time of their life.

Behind the camera
ack for his second year as calendar photographer,
Aaron Huey is a photojournalist who freelances
regularly for National Geographic, Harper’s, The
New Yorker, Smithsonian, the New York Times and dozens
of other publications. Huey is also a contributing photography editor for Harper’s magazine.
Primarily known for documentary journalism, Huey alleges,
“I think I’m kind of a chameleon—I can kind of shoot anything.
I’m sure this [calendar shoot] has made me a stronger photographer.”
Challenges abounded in this tropical paradise: unpredictable
weather, locations or lack of locations, and the cheerleaders’ varied modeling experience caused Huey and his two assistants
to take special care in making all of the
ladies feel both confident and comfortable.
In Huey’s words, “It’s really hard to
keep in mind all the body positions
while coaching facial expressions and
working around time frames. I also
don’t do other shoots where there are
40 people behind me watching and involved.”
He continues, “I have to be on-point all the time. I need to
know what I want in order to inspire confidence. Plus, I need to
produce perfect photos.”
Huey is also known for his 3,349 mile, solo walk across America (with his dog Cosmo). The 2002 journey lasted 154 days.
There was no media coverage. They walked every step. Following the walk, he took a 2½ year hiatus from shooting photos
to build Hueyhaus, an artist-in-residence program on the Pecos
River east of Santa Fe, New Mexico.
As for this year’s calendar shoot, Huey exclaims, “Doing fortyfive shoots in four and a half days—that’s just completely absurd. It’s incredible that we’re able to even pull it off.”
Judging by the results in these pages, Huey and his colleagues more than pulled it off.
Huey with assistants Chet Hay and Drew Ludwig.
NO MAN IS AN ISLAND…
VARIATIONS ON A THEME.
Photographers frequently take advantage of assorted camera angles, changing light, and model juxtaposition to create a series of
contrasting portraits during the never-ending search for “the one.” (Below center) Whether to honor their favorite football team or simply to keep warm, our
cheerleaders huddle up.
…and never has this oft-quoted expression seemed
more appropriate.
Friends since their college days, Drew Ludwig served
as one of Huey’s two assistants.
During the course of the shoot, Ludwig jokingly became known as “a ladyshaper” based on Huey’s frequent requests for him to “get up there and shape that
girl.” Huey and Ludwig have been flanked by beautiful
women before having also worked with Victoria’s Secret models in New York.
Chet Hay, Huey’s full-time assistant and ladyshaper
#2, also brought a very specific skill set to the table.
“Chet was a model so Chet, from being in-front of the
camera, knows what the camera needs.”

s is the case with any sport, practice makes
