128.0 - Depoe Bay (ZIP 97341)
The land that now is Depoe Bay was
allotted by the U.S. government in 1894 to
a Siletz Indian named Charlie Depot. His
last name was derived from his employment at a U.S. army depot. The family
later changed the spelling to Depoe, which
was the spelling used when a post office
was established in 1928.

Depoe Bay may have only 1100 fulltime residents, but it still knows how to put
on a party. April brings the Classic Wooden
Boat Show, Crab Feed, and Ducky Derby.
The Fleet of Flowers is on Memorial Day,
and the annual salmon bake is in September.
Depoe Bay claims to have the world’s
smallest navigable harbor. Charter fishing
and whale-watching boats can be on the open
sea in just minutes. A sea wall runs almost
the full length of town and is known for
the “spouting horns,” rock formations that
turn crashing waves into plumes of water on
stormy days. Winter storm-watching in this
town is very popular.

Captain James Cook named the promontory in 1778 on a day of particularly
inclement weather. Winds can reach 100
mph during storms. A gift shop on the
north side is a real cliffhanger called The
Lookout Observatory.

È The harbor at Depoe Bay.
This was once Hwy 101 itself, but the
roadway is now a one-way (southbound)
scenic drive with spectacular views between
here and Cape Foulweather. About 1/10 mile
along this road is Rocky Creek Bridge. This
McCullough-designed, reinforced-concrete
bridge was built in 1927, and the concrete
has recently been treated to prolong its life.

Nestled between the Coast Range
and the Pacific Ocean, Newport has been a
vacation hotspot since 1856. Newport’s various attractions include the Oregon Coast
Aquarium, Hatfield Marine Science Center,
two historic lighthouses, the Bayfront, and
historic Nye Beach. The Bayfront bustles with
activity, from the U.S. Coast Guard Station
and commercial fishing fleet, to family attractions, charter boats, and galleries.
In February, Newport hosts one of the
Northwest’s largest Seafood and Wine festivals. Other annual events are the Loyalty
Days and Sea Fair Festival in May, the
Lincoln County Fair and Rodeo in July,
and Sea of Lights and Parade of Boats
during the holidays. The Oregon Coast

ing steel arch makes this one of the most
photographed of McCullough’s bridges.
It is high enough for boats to pass under
and has a combination of both steel and
concrete arches. At each end of the bridge
is a pedestrian plaza with stairways leading
to observation areas. From the north end of
the bridge, a fairly steep street leads down
to Bay Boulevard and Newport’s Bayfront.
Farther on, Bay Boulevard becomes North
Bay Road, following the route of the 1885
Oregon Pacific Railroad along the Yaquina
River to Toledo. The 13-mile scenic drive
features river and estuary vistas, historical
markers, and bike and walking lanes.

Boulevard past Bayfront out to Embarcadero
and out Yaquina Bay Road. Several places
along the road offer good shots of the bridge.

155.5 - Alsea Bay Bridge
The “new” Alsea Bay Bridge was completed in 1991. The old bridge, built in 1936,
was the first and only large coastal bridge
designed by Conde McCullough that has
been replaced. The new bridge has a clearance
of 70 feet, and steel and concrete pilings reach
more than 100 feet into the bedrock below.
At the south end of the bridge is the Historic
Alsea Bay Bridge Interpretive Center with
its historic transportation and coastal bridge
displays in addition to general visitor information (541-563-2002). 
Bridge walks and nature walks have become
popular, and Drift Creek Wilderness, a
few miles east of Waldport, is accessible to
hikers. Points of interest in town include
the Waldport Heritage Museum and Alsea
Bay Bridge Interpretive Center, which is
also home to the Waldport Chamber of
Commerce. A wayside at the south end
of town provides beach access. The drive

An old county right-of-way, developed
into the Yachats 804 Trail, extends approximately 2 miles from north of Smelt Sands
State Park to Yachats State Park on the
north side of the Yachats River. Ocean view,
benches, and picnic tables. 
164.4 - Yachats (ZIP 97498)
Known as the Gem of the Oregon
Coast, Yachats is a village of about 635
people located at the mouth of the Yachats
River. Long known as a vacation destination, the resort village draws people who
appreciate its unique qualities. The Little
Log Church was built more than 60
years ago from donated logs and has been
renovated. The residents of Yachats turn
out for their annual La De Da Parade on
July Fourth. The annual Smelt Fry in July
coincides with the Yachats Music Festival,
a popular three-day series of cameo performances by 20-30 major classical artists.
In January the Yachats Lions Club puts
on a tasty crab feed. People come from far
and near to attend the Original Yachats
Arts and Crafts Fair in March, the Village
Mushroom Fest in October, and the Celtic
Music Festival in November.

Not well-known as a fishing river, the

190.0 - Florence (ZIP 97439)
With a population of nearly 9000,
Florence has a modern hospital, library, and
events center.
Florence is home to the first designated
State Park Dive Park, which is located on the
Siuslaw River just off North Jetty Road. The
world’s first sand board park is on the north
end of town.
For those who enjoy golf, two 18-hole
courses, Ocean Dunes and Sandpines, provide plenty of challenge.
191.7 - South Jetty Road
South Jetty Road heads west from Hwy
101 into the dunes. Just before the foredunes, the road turns north. Several parking
areas on South Jetty Road provide easy access
to the beach, but there is no camping. Surfers
and windsurfers often use this as a staging
area, and out near the jetty people catch
crabs off the pier in season. The pier is also a
dive site. A recreation pass required.
190.3 - Rhododendron Drive—North
Jetty Road
Head west on Rhododendron, then left
at North Jetty Road. The north jetty is popular for scuba diving and walks on the beach.
190.6 - Old Town Florence
Located on the riverfront, Old Town has
restaurants, shops, and galleries. The Siuslaw
Pioneer Museum is located in the historic
Florence school building at 278 Maple Street.
Exhibits at the museum cover a range of topics dating to early days of settlement. Open
Tuesdays through Sundays (541-997-7884).
190.9 - Siuslaw River
The river is navigable about 14 miles
inland to Mapleton. It is popular with both
sport fishermen and crabbers. The Siuslaw
River Bridge was one of five major bridges
built in 1936, and like the others, replaced
ferry service across the river. This combination steel double-leaf bascule drawspan is also
noted for its many decorative touches.
191.7 - Florence, Ride the Dunes
See the towering dunes and the off-roadvehicles that climb them off South Jetty
Road. Then experience the thrill by taking
your own ride. Continue south on Hwy 101
to find two companies that offer dune rides.
(541-997-3544; www.sanddunesfrontier.com
and 541-997-8087; www.sandland.com)
191.7 - Oregon Dunes National Rec Area
The Oregon Dunes NRA extends from
Florence to Coos Bay with many access
points off Hwy 101. The Oregon Dunes
Visitor Center is in Reedsport. All sites on
193.4 - Jessie M. Honeyman State Park
This 522-acre park, named after an early
proponent of the state parks system, has a
campground open year-round. Honeyman
includes three lakes: Woahink on the east
side of the highway, Cleawox, and Lily to the
west. Access the dunes October 1 through
April 30. Day-use facilities on Cleawox Lake
(fee area) include picnic and swimming areas.
Woahink Lake has a boat ramp and swimming and picnic facilities (541-997-3641). 
196.5 - Westlake (ZIP 97493)
A well-marked road east to Siltcoos
Lake leads to Tyee Campground, a 14-site
Oregon Dunes NRA campground that
accepts reservations. In less than a mile, the
road reaches Siltcoos Lake, tiny Westlake,
and a public boat ramp.
196.9 - Siltcoos River
Take the Westlake turnoff to the public
boat ramp on Siltcoos Lake. A 3- to 4-mile
canoe trail starts in Siltcoos Lake and moves
along Siltcoos River through forest, dunes,
and salt marsh to an estuary and the ocean.
