November - North East River Yacht Club
North East River Yacht Club Member Newsletter At the Peak of the Chesapeake www.neryc.com FROM THE IPC This past weekend we had the Commodore’s Ball and the Change of Watch Ceremony. Congratulations to Lisa Mack who is our new Commodore. As IPC for the upcoming year, my responsibilities will lessen, and I will not generally be submitting articles for the Waterline. However, I want to thank all of the people that helped me over this last year. I have included as my last article the speech that I gave at the Commodore’s Ball. Last year at this time I stood before you and said that 2007 would be a very exciting but also a very challenging year for the North East River Yacht Club. While the members enjoyed the new docks, the Board was busy putting into place all of the documentation that was required to govern our club. Because of the new docks it was the Board’s responsibility to create or revise all of the club’s rules, policies, procedures, and contracts to make sure that we were in compliance with the requirements from our new insurance company. In addition, we also had to manage the finances of the club, which this year was even harder due to the 1.9 million dollar dock loan. As most of you know, our club has been struggling over the past years; but with our new docks completed, we are definitely heading in the right direction. The 2007 boating season has been one of the most exciting that we have experienced in a long time. The Board members worked very hard for the club this year, and I would like to take this opportunity to recognize some of their efforts. Commodore Elect Lisa Mack revised the House Rules and represented the club as our CBYCA delegate. She also organized the Opening Day Ceremonies Weekend and the Spring & Fall workdays. V/C Elect Jon Fowler was responsible for the Oyster Roast and Hawaiian Luau, provided the entertainment for Birthday & Anniversary Nights, keeping the club calendar current, as well as organizing this beautiful Commodore’s Ball. R/C Elect Roger Hughes in addition to planning all of the cruises this year initiated, with the help of Nigel Veater, our new Officer of the Day program. Our Treasure, Rocco D’Amiento, paid all of the club’s bills every month and kept the club’s spending in line. November 2007 Secretary, Ginny Somers, did an excellent job documenting all of the Board discussions and agenda items in the minutes each month. P/C George Braun was responsible for the changes to the Bylaws and the Nomination Committee. Administrator, David Ferguson, chaired the monthly Management Team meetings, developed a Policies & Procedures manual for the Board, drafted correspondence for the club, and kept the office running smoothly. He is leaving us after putting in six years on the Board, and I personally want to thank him for all of his wisdom and guidance this year. Cliff Shaw, our Buildings & Grounds Chair, kept our facility up and running and worked to help organize outside activities for the two work days each year. He has elected to leave the Board after three years of service. Cliff has done a wonderful job during his term, and we are going to miss him. Through his leadership John Landan, our Restaurant Chair, has taken our restaurant from losing money for the last eight to ten years to where we might actually break even by the end of the year. He and our staff members were responsible for organizing twenty-six outside events in addition to the thirty-six annual events held at the club in 2007. He also was responsible for writing the employee’s manual that was a requirement for our new insurance company. John has spent many hours working at the club; and after spending four years on the Board, he also has elected to step down. I want to personally thank John for the many hours he has volunteered over the last four years and all of the advice that he has given to the Board on many occasions. Our Dock Master, Nigel Veater, was responsible for revising our Slip Contracts and Dock Rules. He also creating the new Transient Slip Policy and helped to launch the Officer of the Day program. He organized many workdays throughout the winter months to finish up the walkways and the bulkheads so that our docks would be completed by Opening Day. In addition, he organized the slips for all of our visiting transients this year, which included eleven visiting yacht clubs and over seventy boats throughout the summer. The Dock Master position is one of the most demanding on the Board, and I am so glad that Nigel has decided to stay in his position for at least one more year. Finance Chair, Darlene Hamlin, was new to the Board this year and has worked very hard to keep the Board on budget. She has spent many hours of her own time in the office over the summer trying to get our new Quick Books computer system up to date by entering all of the information from previous years. Darlene is already planning to sit with all of the BOG members individually next year to establish working budgets for 2008. Our Membership Chair, Heather Higdon, did a fantastic job this year in her position. She brought in a total of forty-eight new memberships during her term. She spent many hours evaluating the different classes of membership that we have and finally was able to consolidate, create, or eliminate membership classes that are now available at the club. In addition, to her membership responsibilities she also hosted the Murder Mystery Dinner in March. P/C Bill Roos, our Sail Race Committee Chairman, worked to establish a group of people to help organize the Sail Race Program. His committee through his leadership was able to achieve a very successful sailing season for our club this past year. Thanks to having the new docks completed we were able to host a number of our local sister yacht clubs, making our sail races larger than ever. The sail race program continues to supply our club members, whether they are power or sail, a chance to spend time together and enjoy our beautiful North East River. P/C Tom Herman besides serving the club as a Past Commodore has continued to support the club by being the Protocol Officer. He has been on the Board a total of twenty-two years attending our meetings and helping with official functions such as our Opening Days and the Commodore’s Balls. Our Board has been very busy this year, but there are still a lot of members that have volunteered their time, and I would like to recognize them also for all of their efforts. Our newly formed marketing committee, headed up by P/C David Andrews and Sharlene Wilkins designed the club brochure and the new street sign. They designed the NERYC ad and the writing and placement of editorials for relevant publications. They also created a transient information packet for our visiting guests and hosted a lot of other activities that went on behind the scenes. In addition to working on the Marketing Committee, Sharlene has been our club Web Master and for a number of years and now too has taken on the responsibility of being the Editor to the Waterline. Pat Shaw has spent many hours getting our Automatic External Defibrillator program together. She has gather information, started training classes, and has purchased our first AED for the club. Renee’ Landan is our Supply Officer for the Ship’s Store. This year, through her efforts selling club merchandise, she was able to make a profit of $4,251.00 that was returned to the club. John Miller and Michael Hamlin have been working together to bring wireless capabilities for computers to the club house and hopefully by next summer to the docks. John in addition has been a big help by revising our entire sound system in the club. He has donated many hours and a lot of his own money in order to complete this project. Michael volunteered his time last summer to work with Delaware Business Systems in order to upgrade the Digital Dinning system. His efforts and time saved the club $3,800. Robert and Regina Leigh were the Assistant Fleet Captains this summer supporting F/C Roger and Linda Hughes. In addition, Robert has also run the Card Board Dinghy races for the last couple of years. Bob Efford, our Insurance Chair spent many hours trying to find an insurance company that would be able to give us the kind of protection that we needed for the new docks and the club house. He is already looking into whether we should continue with our current insurance company or change to another company for 2008. His commitment this year has been invaluable, and the Board has appreciated all of his efforts. Lynn Fowler, along with helping her husband Jon with events and duties of his office, has volunteered to take over maintaining the club roster and will continue to do so next year. Ron and Justine Roecker and David and Claudia Ferguson continue to sponsor the “Three Sheets to Wind” fundraiser event each year and Justine also helps out with the annual Dog Show for our Memberships annual picnic. Lyla Roos also sponsored a fundraiser this year to collect money for the Princess Program. While the ladies enjoyed the High Tea, Doug Cain did his part for the men of the club by having a Low Beer party. Both of these events were well attended and combined collected over $2,000 to help with the Princess Program. Princess Kelly Whittington also needs to be recognized for all of the hours that she has spent attended Commodore’s Balls and Opening Days representing our club. She has graciously agreed to be our Princess again next year and we appreciate all of her efforts. John & Jan Sergeant continue to support the club by sponsoring the Kentucky Derby event for our Opening Day weekends each year and John has agreed to again be our club chaplain for 2008. Susan Andrews and Susan Woron worked together with many others to maintain the club’s grounds. They planted flowers, mulched beds, weeded, and kept everything watered so that the flowers always looked great. Susan also takes care of the Purple Martin birdhouse and makes sure that it is clean and ready to go in the spring for all of special little guests. Rick and Sue Hanson have given an enormous amount of their time over the last four years developing the Jr. Sail Race program and working with our kids to teach them the art of sailing in their summer sail camps. Lastly I would like to thank my husband, Carl Carlson, my sister Heather, and brother-in-law Greg Higdon for supporting me over the last four years. They have helped me through so many events, and we worked together to get the job done. They have been my main team, and I really appreciate everything they have done for me. I do not have time to mention all of the members that have volunteered their time this year. If you helped with a workday, supported a committee, worked to complete the docks, or did anything that helped our club this year, I just want you to know that the Board and I have appreciated all of your efforts. Together, with your support, I know that we will make the North East River Yacht Club one of the best yacht clubs on the Chesapeake Bay. Thank you. P/C Brenda Carlson 2006/07 2 help to me and my predecessors. I cannot imagine how she managed Commodore’s Report to pull this off with a fractured, shattered and cast wrist. I also cannot forget Gerry Becker who created the enormous 3 panel For those of you who did not have the opportunity to be there, and for those who mural upstairs on the dance floor of a ‘Roaring Twenties’ montage. In fact while I was writing this speech, I struggled to find that one word that could aptly describe this event and the level of sophistication, elegance and style that exemplify the extremes of how exceptional & unparalleled this evening’s affair truly is. From the floral arrangements, menu and overall decor & theme, no other club I have visited even comes close to achieving this level of grandeur, flair & refinement. I would like also to take this time to thank all of the outgoing members of the BOG for the years of dedicated and tireless service they have given to the club, John Landan, Cliff Shaw, & David Ferguson, though we have not always seen eye to eye on every issue, I respect all of you and will miss you on the BOG. I need everyone to help me set our waypoints, as I navigate this vessel in the coming year and bring her back into safe harbor when we gather here again next year to celebrate our have and continue to feel supported and accepted by my fellow club members and colleagues on the board and am proud to be a part of an organization that recognizes people by their merits rather than subjugating them because of gender, race or creed. Tonight, is truly a ‘Flapper’s Fantasy’. Thank you, everyone. Lisa Mack Commodore 2007/08 79th year on the bay. As Doug Cain said to me a few months ago after the christening of our new docks, “we have turned the corner” ; yes we have turned the corner not just from sinking membership and crumbling docks but on towards a renewed growth and camaraderie that the NERYC has not enjoyed for some years now. The spirits that was & is evident on the docks and in the THINK GREEN! RECYCLE club house this past season is contagious, we have been transfused with new lifeblood and we are here stronger than ever and poised to be the utmost dining and cruise destination on the Upper Chesapeake. I pledge that I will take my stewardship of this vessel solemnly and diligently, steering her with the respect & pride that such a classic craft deserves. In closing, I thank all of you for celebrating the beginning of our 79th season with me and I hope that all of you enjoy the entertainment and festivities. I am particularly excited that VC Jon & Lady Lynn decided to carry out my idea for ‘Roaring Twenties’, flapper theme tonight. As some of you may or may in the 1920s, the ‘flappers’ broke away from the Victorian image of HELP US & HELP THE PLANET Place your used printer cartridges in the collection box at the club. They dropped the corset, chopped their hair, 4 FROM THE VICE The past year has been a whirlwind of activity for me and others who participated in just about every inside event at your Clubhouse. If you were here, you would have seen good events and great events. There was something for everybody as the line-up of land based events was wide and varied. A quick snapshot of activity shows; Three Sheets to the Wind, Murder Mystery Night, Oyster Roast w/Silent Auction, Cardboard Dinghy Race and Pet Show, Opening Day, Past Commodore’s / New Members Dinner, Hawaiian Luau, Motorized Dinghy run, Wassail Bowl, Ladies High Tea and twelve Birthday Night celebrations. The background detail required for some of these events is huge and largely unseen by many. Fortunately, there are those members that help take some of the workload off the Rear Commodore’s shoulders. These are the people who had a theme, asked for calendar date and were off and running with their own event. Thank you for a job well done, you all did a great job. And to the kind members, who helped me directly in my endeavors, thank you. November is upon us and that brings us the Annual Commodores Ball November 3rd. By the time you read this, the event may have already taken place. We honor Commodore elect Lisa Mack with a 1920’s Themed Commodore’s Ball. The Band named ‘Hipnotic’ will play for event. This event is followed the next day with a Commodore’s Brunch and a Board of Governors meeting later in the day. Thanks again to everybody who was kind and tolerant of me in my efforts to promote the Club in a good light to members and guests. V/C Jon Fowler 2007/08 Nautical Tip of the Month "Bravo Zulu" The naval signal, conveyed by flag hoist or voice FROM THE REAR Incredible but true, the season is over and Robert and I have handed over the 2008 Cruising Season to Joe Reynolds. The past Cruising Season was outstanding with membership participation at an all time high. The club had record turnouts at all of the cruises with 27 boats and almost 90 members attending the Labor Day Cruise to Annapolis and the same numbers to the Frostbite Cruise in Georgetown. It has been a great year for Linda and I due to the incredible member participation, help, and enthusiasm. More honors also came from our sail race program and the success our captains had in competition down the Bay. The Commodores Ball and change of watch installing the new slate of officers is now official. Your new Fleet Captain has made his choices for the seven cruising activities for next season and will be releasing those dates and destinations in the near future. As Rear Commodore, I have been working hard to have the 2008 Calendar available as soon as possible. Beside the Calendar, the Rear Commodore is responsible for the ‘Activities Committee’, the ‘Entertainment Committee’ and several other day-to-day activities. If any member has an interest in volunteering, I would greatly appreciate your help. I am still looking for volunteers to chair, co-chair, or be a committee member for the 2008 club activities. Please respond to my e-mail address at: ([email protected]) if you are willing to be involved with the organization of any of these activities. Your new commodore, Lisa Mack is currently planning the New Years Eve party. The club did not host a party last year due to a lack of interest the year before. Let’s all put the event on our calendars and make the celebration a successful event. Also on January 26th we will have the “Three Sheets to the Wind” party. David and Claudia Ferguson and Ron and Justine Roecker have done a great job with this activity the last three years and made it into one of the best-attended activities in the club. Mark your calendars for this fun activity and contact Ron or Justine if you would like to assist. radio, meaning ‘WELL DONE’. Thanks in anticipation of your continued cooperation and help over the coming season. With all that has been accomplished, Signing off as Fleet Captain for 2006/7 and greetings as Rear Commodore 2007/8. 2006/07 certainly has been a R/C Roger Hughes 2007/08 ‘BRAVO ZULU ’ year for NERYC 5 FROM THE FLEET ‘TOO’ FROM THE DOCKS Well our summer dock season is about to end and our winter season will be starting soon. This is a reminder that all summer slip holders should vacate their slips by November 11th and all mooring holders by October 31st. If you cannot vacate your slip by November 11th please contact me. The weather is cool and damp as I key in this last Waterline insertion of the 2007 Cruising season. We had a record year for cruise participation and increase in membership with first time cruisers on every cruise. To the friends and members who attended the NERYC cruises, we personally thank you, you made the cruises great events. Good friends, good food and of course the never ending Fleet Captains locker of adult beverages, all combined to make each time we went out on the Bay a memorable event . Regina and I had a great time assisting Roger and Linda in the planning and execution of the cruises this season. The NERYC 2008 Calendar of events is published with six cruises planned for the 2008 season. As the weather changes so does the Fleet Captain for next season. I am sure Joe and Laura Reynolds, your new Fleet Captain team, are planning an array of interesting events in conjunction with the cruises to maintain the momentum of the NERYC cruising program. Good luck Joe and Laura, I hope you have as much fun with the 2008 season as both Regina and I enjoyed in 2007. Winter storage starts officially on November 12th. Still thinking about winter storage ? Let me know and we can find a space for you ! Final electrical readings for the summer will be taken on or about November 11th and bill sent out shortly thereafter. Also please note that water will be turned off to all the slips about November 1st. I hope everyone enjoyed work day on October 20th and that it got you ready for the “fun” work days for the docks I have lined up for this year. Beside pulling the mooring balls and installing the deicers, we will be installing more safety ladders, a sign on the outside attenuator, more cleats for transients, additional dingy racks, covering the concrete under the ramp, creating and putting in a “wave dampener” for A dock and any other excuse to get out of the house on Saturdays. Finally, I am always asked how many slips we have available for next year which is a great question – as of this writing we have 7compared to last year at this time when we had about 15 ! I will be updating slip availability on our club web site periodically so if you have friends looking for a great place to put your boat please let me know. See you on the docks. We are already looking forward to next year, Assist. Fleet Captain 2006/07 Robert & Regina Leigh Nigel Veater - Dock Master 2006/08 ? When the ladies hold High Tea, the ‘Manly Men’ gather for ‘Lo Beer’ on D dock. ut! ary. Keep o Man sanctu “Shiver me Timbers! It looks like the ‘Manly’ fortress was breached” 6 FROM THE RACE COURSE It is amazing how time flies when you are having fun and I never even had the feeling that anyone should feel sorry for me for having to work myself stupid, while everyone else is having fun. Several of our close friends were quite astonished when I agreed to stand in as Sail Race Committee Chairman for the 2007 season, since I had just finished going through the ranks a year earlier. During the years that I served on the board I closely witnessed sub-committee chairs, who decided to go it alone and those who surrounded themselves with an active committee. I was not ready to give up active racing and the sail race program deserved the best possible attention, so I opted to invite a strong team to serve on the Sail Race Committee. The rest is history and I firmly believe the program deserves a dedicated team of people who hold the interests of this program close to their hearts. Building the image of sail racing as a sport within the club became one of our priorities. Although the importance was often met with resistance by those who unfortunately clung to the ironic belief that the sport represented the opposite of power boating. Sail boats are to sail racing what bats and balls are to baseball, just a piece of equipment. Sail racing as an activity within our club, has no equal and that is the reason why so many powerboat owners enjoy racing as much as anyone else. It also came as no surprise to me, when the first nomination for the most dedicated crew member for 2007 sail racing season was submitted, that it was for a powerboat owner who truly enjoys racing. The funny thing that people may not realize about me is that whether as a form of transport, rescue craft, or sport fishing boat, I can appreciate a well designed power boat as much as any good sail boat. Sail Awards Dinner Saturday November 17 MUSIC by DJ Cross Having said all this, can I now remind you all of our Sail Race Awards Dinner to be held on Saturday evening, November 17. This event is traditionally recognized as the party, enjoyed by a broad spectrum of our members and their guests. The cost is low, the food and music is good, while the dress code is far from formal. Everyone is welcome and you are guaranteed to have a good time. Please come and celebrate our achievements, recognize our award winners and help us welcome our new Sail Race Committee, under the experienced leadership of Barbi and Bruce Taylor, as they take over the helm. I am very optimistic about the 2008 Club Season under the leadership of our new Commodore Lisa Mack. Lisa is one of the greatest people I have ever had the pleasure of working with and a strong supporter of the sail racing program. I also would like to thank the members of the board that I have served with during the past year for their support and wish the incoming board everything of the very best for 2008. As for the sail racers and members of the Sail Race Committee, I will personally thank you for your enthusiastic support and all the good times we shared at the Sail Race Awards Dinner . LADIES HIGH TEA REPORT BACK It was about a year ago that the thought came to mind of organizing a Ladies High Tea, little did I know what a tremendous success it would turn out to be. Thank you to our hostesses, Lynn Fowler, Renee Landan, EmmaJane Nowland, Pat Shaw, Loren & Lynae Roos, Jenn Lotter, Sherry Burke and Michelle Kelly, Heather Higdon, Sue Hanson, Linda Hughes and Sandy Cohee for an amazing presentation of tables, delicious treats and variety of teas. Sherry Burke shared her “High and Dry to Wet and Wild” life experiences with us. Those who had never met Sherry certainly got to know her in the best circumstances ever. Thank you Sherry for the extremely interesting experiences that you we were able to share. April Shaw, what a voice? I had been told what to expect but believe me, you would have to go far to improve on the soloist who entertained us ladies. Thank you April, we all know that with your voice you will never be lonely. Lauri Roszell, our harpist, offered us the most relaxing background music as well as her accompaniment with April. I am sure each of us could sit back and enjoy her soothing music anytime. Our five young ladies that were kept on their toes throughout the afternoon, between boiling water and serving ice water, they certainly had their hands full. Thank you so much to Princess Kelly, Jr. Princess Gabi, Shannon, Erica and Mikenzi. As we all know we could have all the above but without our guests there would not be an event. For all the ladies that came out to support and enjoy our Ladies High Tea, I would like to thank you and remind you to mark your calendars for next year – Sunday October 19th 2008. My sincere appreciation goes to our staff members April and Kim, from the planning stages to the clean up, they gave there all with smiles and laughs throughout. This event raised a substantial amount, which will enable the Princess Support Program to go ahead for Princess Kelly and Bridge Officers to represent our club down the Bay, and thus re-enforce the reciprocal agreement between our fellow CBYCA clubs. With our fantastic new floating docks, we surely need to share. Lyla Roos WE NEED YOUR HELP FOR OUR CLUB TO GROW!!! As at publishing of this issue, I will have handed over the reigns to your new membership chair Van Downing, Please contact her at (302) 656-1281 or [email protected] with any questions.
