In quiet moments, we can listen to the voice of God within and foster a peace within ourselves that enables us to grow in wisdom and grace. “Silence . . . ” Sometimes silence can be deadly, especially when it means we fail to speak up for what is important. “If only I had said something . . .” All of us have moments of regret for not speaking up when someone is being hurt, a reputation is being ruined, statements of prejudice are being voiced, or harmful gossip is being spread. Christ was truly compassionate toward those who were hurting or outcast. But he was also not afraid to speak the truth and to correct. Instances of this come to mind . . . ▪ To Peter, “Get behind me you Satan.” ▪ To the Pharisees, “You hypocrites.” ▪ To those ready to stone a women, “Let him without sin cast the first stone.” ▪ To all of us, “I have come to cast fire on the earth.” John Quiñones in his television program “What Would You Do?” stages situations where ordinary people are filmed either speaking up or avoiding issues when someone should speak up on behalf of others. “What would you do?” is a great question! I challenge myself and all of you to pray for the gift of knowing when to keep silent and when to speak up. When good people fail to speak up, more harm can be done than those who do evil. Whether in our homes, at work, or at social events out in public, there are times for us to speak out for what is right and just. ~Fr. Paul Demuth, Pastor T h e S e r e n i t y P r a ye r God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change; courage to change the things I can; and wisdom to know the difference. Living one day at a time; Enjoying one moment at a time; Accepting hardships as the pathway to peace; Taking, as He did, this sinful world as it is, not as I would have it; Trusting that He will make all things right if I surrender to His Will; That I may be reasonably happy in this life and supremely happy with Him Forever in the next. Amen. Do you have a love for the Catholic faith? Are you being called to deepen and share your faith with others? There is a place where you and your gifts belong. It’s as a . Usually, whenever we do anything for anyone, we do it out of love for that person because we care. Whether we realize it or not, caring is showing love. In last week’s bulletin article on Relationship Building Through Service, we read that through serving one another, we serve Jesus because He told us “Whatsoever you do for the least of my people, that you do unto me.” So when we intentionally choose to ‘do something’ for others, we do it not only to express our love for that person but also for Jesus Christ. As Catholic Christians, all good things we do, we do out of love for Christ. As Church, we are the body of Christ. We are His eyes, ears, heart, hands and feet. It is up to us to carry out His mission of service. As we pray and discern on how we can serve, consider stepping up in your commitment to service by becoming more active in the parish. This past June, our parish sponsored the first ever Ministry Fair which displayed all of the wonderful ministries we have here at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton. There are multiple opportunities to serve at every level of commitment. Serving at the parish level is the heart of our parish. It’s what keeps our parish alive. Jesus served us out of love by giving up His life on the cross, and through His resurrection, He obtained salvation for us. As we serve, remember that whatsoever we do, that we do out of love for Christ. As you contemplate serving, you may want to say the prayer of St. Ignatius Loyola which is below. Do you know an adult interested in getting Confirmed? Discussion and planning sessions will begin here at our parish in September. Contact the parish office for more information. [email protected] or (920) 499-1546 Do you know anyone who considers themselves Catholic but hasn’t been to church in a while? Do they have questions about the Church’s position on an issue? Have they been thinking of returning to the Church? Have they felt hurt or rejected by the Church? St. Bernard’s is offering a program open to inactive Catholics beginning Tuesday, September 13, 7pm, for five Tuesdays. For questions or to register, contact Deacon Larry at (920) 468-4922. Have you ever been asked questions about your Catholic faith and been unable to answer? Have you ever felt uncomfortable when friends, co-workers, or family members challenged you because of what you believe? Have people ever come to your door trying to convince you that your Catholic faith is just plain wrong? If you answered yes to any of these questions or just want to learn more, or have a review of certain aspects of our faith, come to Fr. John Girotti will be our guest speaker on September 19 and will kick off this 15-part series. Sessions consist of a video on the topic and discussion facilitated by Carrie Lundy. They are most commonly for the repose of the soul of someone who has died. Infinite graces flow from the Sacrifice of the Mass which benefit one’s soul. The person requesting the Mass intention does not need to be in attendance at the Mass for which they made the request. The stipend is set by Canon Law and is given for offering the Mass which thereby, in justice, creates an obligation which must be satisfied.
