Program Highlights
 Visit Nursing education programs and facilities in Ireland including: Foyle Hospice in Derry, Queen’s
University Belfast School of Nursing & Midwifery, and Queens University Cancer Center
 Provide direct service to programs providing care to hospice patients while in Ireland
 Learn about the history of the Northern Ireland Conflict and visit important sites
 Tour the Giant’s Causeway on Ireland’s northern shores

Academic Focus
This course offers an opportunity for students to compare and contrast nursing education and the delivery of health care within Ireland, Northern Ireland, and the United States and to apply theoretical concepts of health care policy and nursing in an international
setting. Utilizing knowledge from public health and public policy, students will identify commonalities and differences in health care issues, health care delivery, and outcomes as they relate to selected
populations. Suggested topics for exploration may include palliative
care, children's bereavement, women's health, mental health, cancer care, and care of the aging. Working with the Inch House Irish
Studies Centre located at Inch, Lough Swilly, Co. Donegal, a part of
Ireland that has experienced a history of conflict and violence, students will participate in lectures and tours that will explore Irish culture and concepts of conflict resolution to promote understanding of
the political, social and health consequences of conflict. Opportunities for interdisciplinary interaction and service within community
agencies will be made available for the students. By blending both
didactic and service learning this course will provide students with
valuable knowledge and experience to participate within a global
community.
