Tracy suggests wearing a large
necklace or cocktail ring as a big
piece. “One thing to remember is
not to overload yourself with
these pieces,” she says. Simplicity
is key. Pick one great statement
piece and tone down the rest of
your accessories. If you choose a
large necklace, wear medium to
small earrings. If you choose a
large bracelet, don’t pair with a
large cocktail ring. “Where it’s
located is key,” she says. “The
point is it’s supposed to draw
attention to you. If it’s really
overdone in one area, you’ll
just look kind of cluttered.”

keep in mind that the shade of
yellow you wear needs to be
one of your colors. “Choose
the shading that works with
your skin color,” she says.
“Yellow ranges from warm
tones to cool tones. Everybody
can wear it.”

PATTERNED FLATS. “Flats are
so in,” Tracy says. “They’re a
very comfortable shoe and a
boomer appreciates a flat
maybe more so than a heel.”
You’ll see flats using a lot of
geometric shapes and
interesting textures, or solid flats
with rhinestones, beads,
bobbles and buckles, and even
stripes, florals and plaids.
“They’re very embellished and
very pretty,” she says. “You can
dress them up or dress them
down, that’s the fun thing about
them.” Boomers shouldn’t be
concerned about wearing the
same kind of shoe as perhaps
their teenage daughters. “They
cross all lines,” Tracy says. “I
don’t think it makes them look
like they’re wearing a young
trend. I think they actually look
even better on an older woman.
They have a polished look.” ➤

5 ❘ THE ANKLE PANT. These
are a cropped pant, but longer
than a capri, hitting you right
at the ankle. “These are a little
longer so it makes them
dressier than a capri,” Tracy
says. “It’s a nice alternative to
wearing a skirt if you don’t
want to show any leg.”
4 ❘ THE CROSS-BODY BAG
OR SLING. This is a newer
trend, Tracy says, and can be a
fun alternative to your typical
handbag or purse. “What’s
great about it is it’s very casual
looking but cool at the same
time,” she says. These bags are
similar to something called a
messenger bag, but with more
style. Tracy suggests a dark
leather color for a dressier look
or a nylon or pattern for a
more casual look.

1 ❘ DO NOT CLING TO A LOOK THAT’S
PAST ITS PRIME. If you haven’t changed your
hairstyle in the last 10 or 20 years, you need
an update. A look from another decade ages
you quickly.
2 ❘ KEEP UP TO DATE ON CURRENT
FASHION TRENDS. You may have a great
suit in your closet that you paid a lot of money
for 15 years ago, but big shoulder pads and a
boxy, double-breasted cut no longer looks
polished. Accept that fact that some things
need to go.
6 ❘ ANIMAL PRINTS.
Animal prints are still trendy
and are most fun used on
accessories such as scarves,
bags, shoes and jewelry, Tracy
says. “A great shoe or a great
bag in giraffe is my favorite at
the moment,” she says. You
could go as far as a great
trench coat in an animal print,
but Tracy cautions to make sure
you have the fashion
personality to pull it off.
“You’re going to get attention.
People are going to notice you.
If you don’t want the attention,
get a great purse instead.”
3 ❘ STAY CURRENT WITH COLOR
TRENDS. If you’re aware of what colors are
popular and which shades of them look good
on you, you’re always going to look good.
4 ❘ DRESS YOUR AGE. Know when it’s time
to move on and stop shopping in the juniors
section or wearing mini-skirts.
5 ❘ DO NOT BEAR ANYTHING THAT
NEEDS TO BE COVERED. It can be difficult
to accept, but at a certain age showing skin is
not appropriate. Never show off your liabilities.
If you accentuate your assets and hide your
liabilities, you will look timeless and classy. ■
