Top 3 reasons to visit the Vale of Glamorgan
1. You love the coast
OK, our name may make you
think of secluded routes
through green hills but that’s
not the whole picture. The Vale
(as it’s known locally) is actually
a coastal region just west of
Cardiff in South Wales, with
a 14 mile stretch of Heritage
Coast. We’ve got the Wales
Coast Path, towering cliffs,
golden beaches, remote coves,
surf schools, boat cruises and
the Victorian seaside resorts
of Penarth and Barry Island
(of Gavin and Stacey fame).
2. You prefer the countryside
Inland, the Vale is an idyllic mix
of rolling hills, country lanes,
villages, gentle footpaths, wellkept farms, beautiful cottages,
fascinating churches and
castles. The perfect backdrop
for outdoor activities, exploring
local legends, enjoying great
food and drink. Equally good in
the sun or rain (come prepared,
that’s how the Vale is so green),
your experience will always be
authentic, not fabricated.
3. You’d like a city break
Choose Cardiff - capital city of
Wales - and you’ll be right on
our doorstep. In under 2 miles
you can stroll from Cardiff
Bay to Penarth Marina across
the Cardiff Bay Barrage. You’re
missing out if you leave Cardiff
without popping over to the
Vale; like strawberries and
cream, they go well together!

The Glamorgan Heritage Coast, extending
westwards from Aberthaw to Newton,
Porthcawl, has special conservation status.
This 14 mile stretch of coastline is exceptionally
rich in geological features and wildlife: fulmars,
choughs, peregrines and bar-tailed godwits
captivate many a birdwatcher.
Part of the Wales Coast Path, it has all the
dramatic beauty you’d expect of the Welsh
coastline without the crowds, so walkers are
very happy here. You’ll come across an eclectic
mix of WWII gun emplacements, secluded bays,
Nash Point lighthouse and possibly a fossil or
two. And if you find it hard to leave, why not
stay at a coastal campsite.
A good starting point is the Heritage Coast
Centre at Dunraven Bay, Southerndown:
home to the Heritage Coast Rangers who are
exceptionally knowledgeable about the coast
and help to care for it. Nearby are the remains
of a fortified mansion known as Dunraven
Castle and its recently restored walled gardens.
Download the Dunraven Castle Explorer Kit for
children from www.visitthevale.com; others in
the series include Nash Point and Monknash.
And the views aren’t just endless sea. There
are the tiny islands of Flat Holm (in Wales)
and Steep Holm (in England) against the
backdrop of the Somerset and Devon coast.
A super vista is at Lavernock Point near
Penarth; nearby, in 1897, Marconi received the
first radio transmission across water from
Flat Holm island.
You’ll find a great choice of accommodation on pages 37 - 42.

Daryl
Daryl Davies works at Dunraven Bay,
Southerndown - better known to
Doctor Who fans as Bad Wolf Bay.
‘Working with nature - that’s the
beauty of my job,’ says Daryl of
Southerndown Surf School. He’s
been hooked on surfing all his life.
‘It’s a natural thing to do growing
up in the Vale. I worked as a
surf instructor across the world
before coming back to my roots,’
says Daryl.
Australia this is not. But
Southerndown is the perfect
location for beginners to get the
hang of surfing, and it’s popular
with kayakers too. Experienced
surfers prefer the more challenging
waves at Ogmore-by-Sea and Cwm
Colhugh at Llantwit Major, and
windsurfers of all abilities head for
the windier Cold Knap at Barry.
Nash Point Lighthouse
The last manned lighthouse in Wales, Nash Point became automated in
1998 and was the first lighthouse in the British Isles to be licensed
as a venue for weddings and civil partnership ceremonies. Now open on
selected days, you can admire the views from the
lighthouse, hear the foghorn and, if you’re smitten,
book a stay in the former keepers’ cottages.

Barry Island
Famed in recent years as the location for BBC TV’s sitcom Gavin
and Stacey, Barry Island has attracted visitors since the 1870s and
the appeal of its golden beaches, family amusements and cafés
is stronger than ever. The addition of new beach huts, changing
facilities, landscaped gardens and a covered events area on the Eastern
Promenade of Whitmore Bay extends the resort along the full length
of the beach and adds to its year-round appeal for families of all ages.
It’s an excellent spot to start a walk: there’s a 3 mile circular
loop around the ‘island’ (part of the Wales Coast Path) with the
opportunity to go further west to The Knap and Porthkerry Country
Park, and a 6 mile trail linking Barry Island with Barry town.
8 www.visitthevale.com
Family businesses, linked by a real sense of camaraderie,
form the backbone of Barry Island – sometimes nicknamed
Barrybados! ‘We’re a tight-knit community with one aim – to
present Barry Island at its best so that visitors have a great
time,’ says Pat Collins. Part of a fairground dynasty stretching
back four generations, he operates various attractions on the
promenade. His father, also called Pat, sums it up: “The island
is run by families for families, and family memories
are made here”.

How green is my Vale?
Now managed by the National Trust, Dyffryn
House was built in 1893 by wealthy coal
magnate John Cory. Significant parts of the
ground and first floors are open to the public.
The Grade I listed Edwardian gardens, covering
55 acres, were designed by eminent landscape
architect Thomas Mawson in collaboration with
John Cory’s son, Reginald, a leading figure in
the Royal Horticultural Society.

Slow down
The Vale is becoming a slow tourism destination. That means we’re encouraging
visitors to savour their time with us, explore the area in more depth and
ask locals for recommendations. Like all things of quality, our food and drink
cannot be rushed. So please take your time: stop for a coffee and drink in the
view, meet up with friends for a leisurely lunch or drop everything on a sunny
day to enjoy a picnic of local produce.
O
ur farmers and producers appreciate
authenticity and are keen to shout
about food and drink as part of the
Vale’s cultural heritage. Businesses like
Slade Farm Organics and Glyndwr Vineyard
are quite rightly proud of their high quality
products and enjoy engaging with visitors.
If you’re seeking real experiences, try a tour
at Glyndwr Vineyard – voted one of the UK’s
Top 5 Vineyard Experiences. Groups can get
a behind-the-scenes look at an organic farm
with a Slade Farm Safari.
Most producers sell at farmers’ markets and
specialist shops, with some selling online
and even delivering to holiday cottages. The
annual Cowbridge Food and Drink Festival
(May) and Vale of Glamorgan Agricultural
Show (August) showcase the very best from
the Vale. Check out all our producers at
www.visitthevale.com.

An innovative bunch, our producers aren’t
limited by tradition. Some concoct novel
flavour combinations – check out Fablas ice
cream, while others expand their business
by diversifying... Llanerch Vineyard has a
bistro and cookery school. Hendrewennol, one
of Wales’ oldest pick-your-own fruit farms,
attracts families to the countryside with
its children’s play area and Maize Maze (in
late summer). Another family favourite is
Warren Mill Farm Park, full of the cutest and
fluffiest creatures!

St. Illtud

At Llantwit Major in around 500 AD St. Illtud founded
what is believed to be Britain’s oldest seat of learning. The
monastic school had over 1,000 pupils including, according
to history, St. David, patron saint of Wales, and St. Patrick,
patron saint of Ireland. From here missionaries travelled
throughout the Celtic world spreading Christianity.
Built in the 11th century, the current St. Illtud’s church was
described by John Wesley as ‘the most beautiful church
in Wales’. Its Galilee Chapel was recently reconstructed to
form a visitor centre which explores the origins of Celtic
Christianity and houses the most important collection of
Celtic Christian crosses in the UK.

Mr. Iolo Morgannwg
Two circular walking trails around Cowbridge (4.7 & 6.5 miles) follow the footsteps of one
of the Vale of Glamorgan’s most colourful characters, Iolo Morgannwg (1747-1826). Visit our
Cowbridge page at www.visitthevale.com to download a copy.
Born Edward Williams, this prolific poet was better known by his bardic name and wrote
tirelessly – in both Welsh and English – about his beloved Vale of Glamorgan. A splendid
literary forger, poems which he attributed to the 14th century poet Dafydd ap Gwilym were
not discovered to be forgeries until the 20th century. Part of Iolo’s legacy is the Gorsedd of
the Bards - an integral part of the National
Eisteddfod of Wales, the country’s largest
cultural festival.
Populated since Prehistoric times,
the Vale has a rich folklore, dozens of
historic sites and some interesting
characters - not all of them saints!

6,000 years ago Neolithic man lived in the village of Tinkinswood,
near St. Nicholas. Today there remains a burial chamber that is over
1,000 years older than Stonehenge! Just as impressive is the size
of this stone structure; the capstone measures 8 metres by
4 metres and weighs almost 36 tonnes - the same as an articulated
lorry. Excavations in 1914 revealed the bones of over 50 individuals.

Colonel Philip Jones, one of Oliver Cromwell’s right-hand men, and
is still lived in by his descendants today. Sir Brooke Boothby and his
family open their beautiful home and extensive grounds to visitors

A tale o two towns
Some say good
things come in
small packages.
In the case of Cowbridge
and Llantwit Major, we
know this old cliché is true.
Cowbridge
In a nutshell
Called Y Bont-faen (the stone bridge) in Welsh, this understated
historic market town that has become one of Wales’ most
fashionable places to see and be seen.
History
Originally a Roman settlement, it is one of very few medieval walled
towns in Wales; the South Gate and portions of the walls are still
standing. Discover more at the Museum in the Town Hall. You’ll get a
great view of Cowbridge from the 14th century St. Quentins Castle,
½ mile south of the town, and a couple of miles away is a ruined
medieval fortified manor house Old Beaupre Castle. Visit both sites
when you follow the Iolo Morgannwg Trail, download it from
www.visitthevale.com
Shopping, eating & drinking
The town boasts dozens of predominantly independent boutiques and
restaurants. Some are spread along the high street, others are in
the arcades at Mason’s Yard and Verity’s Court - where you’ll find the
Old Wool Barn art and craft workshops.
Relaxing
Right in the centre of Cowbridge are two delightful spaces: Old Hall
Gardens and Cowbridge Physic Garden. All the plants in the Physic
Garden were to be found in Britain before 1800 and are grouped
together according to their uses for cooking, healing and dyeing
fabric and wool.

Llantwit Major
In a nutshell
The larger of the two towns, it has developed quietly while
retaining its meandering medieval streets and fine stone buildings.
It’s intentionally unassuming, yet with unrivalled provenance as the
most important early Christian settlement in Wales, founded by
St. Illtud.

History
The town exudes history: Iron Age hill forts, fine Tudor buildings,
a Roman villa and a medieval grange. St. Illtud established a church
and place of learning here in 500AD. The imposing 11th century
church now standing on this site has been called the Westminster
Abbey of Wales and contains the UK’s finest collection of Celtic
carved stones.
Shopping, eating & drinking
In the maze of narrow streets you’ll discover independent shops,
friendly cafés and historic inns including the 12th century
Old Swan Inn.
Relaxing
Enjoy a leisurely stroll around the town following the Blue Plaque
trail which takes in 13 noteworthy buildings. A couple of miles
outside the town is St. Donats Arts Centre, housed in the
medieval Tythe Barn in the grounds of UWC Atlantic College, an
international boarding school for students from over 90 countries.
Expect a top-notch programme of music, theatre, dance, film and
exhibitions, including the biennial Wales International Storytelling
Festival - Beyond the Border. A short drive takes you to Llantwit
Major’s beach, Cwm Colhugh, where there’s a café, great rock pools
and easy access to the Wales Coast Path.

Constructed nearly 6,000 years ago, this Neolithic burial
chamber held the bodies of over 50 individuals. At around
36 tonnes the capstone weighs as much as an articulated
lorry and is one of the largest in Britain.
Known locally as gwal-y-filiast – kennel of the greyhound
bitch - this single stone chamber is all that remains of a
once much larger burial monument. The name may come
from a variant of the Arthurian legend of Culhwch and
Olwen, which appears in two 14th century Welsh texts, but
the site itself is very much older dating from the Neolithic
period, some 5,000 to 6,000 years ago. Single car pull-in
adjacent to entry. Entry through narrow kissing gate from
road, not allowing disabled access or buggies. Walk is 100
metres through farmland.
