The Year in Pictures
San Diego Jewish Academy’s Maimonides Arts Collective
has helped to enrich students’ musical and artistic talents
Our school community spirit gives me tremendous pride.
The efforts of faculty, parents, and students are evident
in the numbers: the number of positive responses to
this year’s parent survey; the number of top university
acceptances and the number of offered scholarships;
the number of students who distinguished themselves
at local and regional competitions in the fields of
mathematics, science, and creative writing; the number
of students enrolled in AP classes; the number of students
on this year’s senior trip to Poland and Israel; and the
many hours of tikkun olam contributed by students and
their families.

SDJA has had much to celebrate: the building of our new
gymnasium, the Every Child Campaign gala honoring
Glenn and Karen Doshay, Israel’s 60th Anniversary. The
scenes and photographs in this Annual Report capture our
school’s achievements. They take you into the classrooms
where students are enjoying dynamic Jewish and general
curricula; to sports fields where athletes build confidence
and prowess; to arts programs that allow students the
opportunity to explore their creative passions; to Tefillah
where Jewish values and souls are nourished. Pictures
capture the present, but they also project the future.
Looking beyond, we will remain focused on the things
that SDJA does best: challenging our students to achieve
their highest academic potential, encouraging them to
become individuals of strong moral and ethical character,
and inspiring them to make Judaism a vital and relevant
aspect of their lives. The future is bright for the students of
San Diego Jewish Academy.

executive director
At the Melton Conference at Hebrew University in Eretz
Yisrael this past May, I was honored to represent San
Diego Jewish Academy. As I sat amongst leaders of
renowned Jewish schools worldwide, I reflected upon our
own school’s many accomplishments and highlights of
2007-2008. SDJA is a school that is increasingly respected
and acknowledged, both locally and nationally, for
its academic strengths, pluralistic Jewish environment,
artistic endeavors, and athletic achievements. Our
students continue to develop intellectually, physically,
culturally and spiritually in a context that is rich in Jewish
values and committed to Israel.
financial report
The growing community of SDJA parents, staff, alumni, and friends continues its tradition of
exceptional generosity, providing the school with a strong financial foundation upon which to
build. Our obligation is to be responsible and effective stewards and remain dedicated to fulfilling
this legacy.

In this year’s operating budget, the majority of
funding resulted from student tuition and fees,
representing over 86% of operating funds necessary
to offset annual expenditures. The remaining funds
were generated by annual gifts and contributions,
and miscellaneous income related to areas such as
facility rentals, catering events, and Beit Yeladim.

Over 73% of operating expenses are invested in
wages and benefits for teachers and staff, and facility
maintenance. The remainder is spent on providing
financial aid, tuition discounts and instructional
programs (academic and athletic), and establishing
cash reserves for future debt service.
5th grade students made Shabbat
table runners or tallitot to learn
the sacred act of Hiddur Mitzvah,
beautifying a ritual object to be
passed on to future generations.
Professional
development,
including
faculty
attendance at reading, math and Hebrew language
conferences, and lay and administrative attendance
at national and international conferences, has
helped to advance every aspect of the school.
Further ensuring the long-term stability of our school,
a number of board members will participate in a twoyear Governance Leadership Institute program, as
we explore ways to develop board leadership in the
coming year.
SDJA’s Legacy Campaign has heralded two significant
endowments promoting Jewish continuity: one
broadening Jewish studies through the commissioning
of a new sefer Torah, and the other remembering the
Holocaust and inspiring future generations through
the creation of ceramic butterflies for Zikaron V’tikvah
(Remembrance and Hope).
I wish to extend my heartfelt thanks and appreciation
for the tireless commitment and dedication of the
board of trustees and all our volunteers, as well as
the parents, faculty and staff who continually strive
to ensure that SDJA is an institution of which we can
all be proud.
Beverley Pamensky
president message
As my first year as president of the Board of Trustees
draws to a close, I reflect over the past year’s endeavors
to make San Diego Jewish Academy the best it can
be. The academic achievements of the class of 2008
have opened even more doors to the nation’s top
universities. Our new lower school principal, Mr. Daniel
Sussman, and upper school Dean of Jewish Studies,
Rabbi Leslie Lipson, have benefited our students
and inspired our faculty with their innovative and
knowledgeable approach to Elementary and Jewish
education. The new Maimonides Arts Collective has
introduced a forum to enrich students’ musical and
artistic talents. SDJA’s athletic teams and individuals
continue to produce impressive statistics in the world
of sports.
upper school
This year, we have seen an unprecedented increase
in the level of academic, artistic and athletic
achievements. Ronit Hakakha was a 2008 Harvard
Prize Book recipient, for outstanding juniors who
demonstrate academic excellence.
Cheshbon HaNefesh is
a spiritually reflective
time, during which
middle and high
school students
choose from four
prayer “communities”,
reflective of SDJA’s
pluralistic philosophy:
Reform, Conservative,
Orthodox, and a
Learner minyan.
High school students
have an additional
option to express their
understanding and
connection to liturgy
through art, music and
poetry.
VIP Village Preschool in Imperial Beach honored
SDJA Seniors who have been actively involved
with the preschool since 2001.
The graduating class of 52 seniors received 200
acceptances to 96 colleges and universities in
26 states and 3 countries. They were offered over
$1,700,000 in academic scholarships.
All fourteen entrants in the County Science Fair were winners. Six
took first place awards.
For Israel’s 60th anniversary, Mrs Yeshanov’s Hebrew 9/10 class
produced movies on each decade of Israel’s history.

This year, three Maimonides Upper School’s Athletes were recognized as Union Tribune Players of the
Week and Citrus League Players of the Year:
Sophomore pitcher, Michael Fagan was
honored after he tied the San Diego County
strikeout record for one game with 21
strikeouts. After a successful sophomore
campaign in which he broke the CIF single
season strikeout record, he led Maimonides
Upper School to the Citrus West League
championships and into the CIF playoffs,
becoming Citrus League Baseball Player of
the Year.
Senior phenom, Ali Adelman, finished
her 4 year campaign as UT Player of the
Week after leading her team to the Citrus
League West Championship for the
third year in a row and becoming Citrus
League Softball Player of the Year. She
will continue her athletic and academic
career with a full softball scholarship at
the University of Connecticut in the fall.
Sophomore center midfielder Sean Callahan was
honored after having two
hat tricks (6 goals in one
week) and was named
Citrus League Soccer

My Choice
Lauren Bender, 9th grade
You are born into Judaism,
You may not choose.
I could not choose.
So we escaped, in a blaze
Of triumphant glory,
Believing we were the first,
While my father went to shul,
And prayed for me.
And so we explored:
Buddhism, Christianity, Islam
All the religions we could find.
And God said, “It is good.”
We found, we loved, we lost, we
hated.
And it was good, but it was empty.
They sought more, but I returned.
I joined my father in shul,
And we prayed together.
And God smiled, and it was quiet.
“I knew you’d come back.”

Swastika
I am death
Yellow Badge
I am pride hiding in my Heart
they are sitting
waiting
dreading
listening.
Like a shark waiting
For the kill
a soft cry
then louder
louder
and louder
until it becomes a piercing wail
awaiting what cannot be foretold
an end that is most certainly death
Crying, “where do I go?”
Jews are my enemy
Tears of death falling down my cheeks like rain drops
Falling from the sky
I am as bright as a flower
Blooming in the spring
I am as yellow as a flower dying in the spring
I am full with power
I am empty with hope
I am a swastika
I am a yellow badge
The Holocaust
To be cherished
To be remember
I want to kill
I want to be free
I want to see death
I want to see survival
I smiled
I cried
I laughed
I hid
I shouted
I ran
I am a swastika
I am a yellow badge
footsteps, nearly stomping
causing lungs to almost refuse to breathe
and then
the creak of a door
the slicing breeze as it swings open
hands clenching
hearts pounding
and the split second
that feels like an eternity
when one is awaiting the truth to their fate
murder
to an innocent child
his mother
the life in their eyes swept away
like ashes on a windy street
in the dead of night
their throats pulsing with screams
six million screams
that never escaped
they were silenced
souls were silenced
time and time again
never forget.
Shouting, “Jude! Jude!”

Waiting for my family to appear in my eyes

ENDOWMENT FUNDS
While endowment gifts of $100,000 or above can establish a named fund, donors making outright gifts of $5,000
or above, and bequests or planned gifts of any denomination, are all included in the SDJA Legacy Circle.
Joseph Oppenheimer Financial Aid Fund
Established in 1999 by a gift from Joseph Oppenheimer, this was San Diego Jewish Academy’s first endowment
fund. The fund was established to provide financial aid for students and to foster family oriented Jewish education. Joseph served on the SDJA Jewish Day Schools for the 21st Century Task Force from 2002 – 2004.
Sperling Family Financial Aid Fund
Established in 2000 by Bobbie and Lee Sperling, this innovative gift was funded over the course of 5 years
through the proceeds from the sale of donated art, whose value appreciated over time. Bobbie and Lee’s
commitment to Jewish education extended to their children, Rebecca and Steven, who graduated from SDJA
in 1995 and 1996 respectively, but also included their desire to ensure that financial aid be available to families
that would not otherwise be able to afford an SDJA education. After serving on the Board for 2 years, Bobbie
taught at SDJA from 1990 – 2004.
Chortek Family Foundation Endowment Fund
Established in 2004, this gift from the Chortek Family Foundation is intended to provide financial aid for students
and ensure funding for the Senior Class trip to Israel. Elaine & Peter Chortek serve as the Honorary Chairs of the
Legacy Campaign. Their daughter, Susan, serves on the Board of Trustees and as co-chair of the Parent Teacher Organization. Grandchildren Shana and Sammy are currently enrolled in the Golda Meir Lower School.
SDJA Music Fund
Established in 2005, this gift from Marsha and Howard Berkson affirmed their belief that music enriches children’s
growth and development, teaching both discipline and creativity. Their endowment will strengthen the music
program, providing instruments and extra coaching throughout the school, and ensuring that music is always a
part of the SDJA curriculum. Their son, Jacob, currently attends SDJA.
SDJA Financial Aid Fund
Established in 2005, by the Board of Trustees, this fund is comprised of numerous donations of $5,000 and above
in support of the Board-adopted commitment to allocate at least 10% of annual operating expenses to Financial Aid.
SDJA Professional Development Fund
Established in 2005, by the Board of Trustees, this fund is comprised of donations of $5,000 and above and is
intended to ensure that SDJA Staff and Faculty can benefit from continuing education and professional development in their respective fields.
Shillman Foundation Distinguished Scholars Recognition Fund
Established in 2006, this gift from the Shillman Foundation encourages and commends the pursuit of excellence
in Mathematics and Science. Those SDJA students who are awarded 1st, 2nd and 3rd place in regional Mathematics and Science competitions or who achieve eligibility in the National Merit Student program, are named
and listed as Shillman Scholars and attend an annual reception in their honor at the estate of Dr. Bob and Mao
Shillman. The Shillmans’ sons, Max and Barney, currently attend SDJA and their niece, Michelle, graduated from
SDJA in 2006.
Marna Weiss Golda Meir Lower School Principal’s Fund
Established in 2007 by the Board of Trustees and founded with a gift from the SDJA Parent Teacher Organization, this fund was created to honor and acknowledge GMLS Principal Marna Weiss and her 21 years of exemplary service to the school. Proceeds from this fund are used at the GMLS Principal’s discretion.
Martin Kornfeld Family Zikaron V’Tikvah Endowment Fund
Established in 2006, by Martin Kornfeld and his son’s Rick and Gary, in memory of Phyllis Kornfeld, beloved wife,
mother and grandmother, this gift will support the school’s nationally renowned butterfly project and further
Holocaust education. Kornfeld grandchildren, Helen, Sarah and Jacob, currently attend SDJA.
Liz and Isaac Calderon Endowment Fund for Jewish Studies
Established in 2008, with a lead gift from the Calderon family and comprised of additional gifts from the SDJA
Legacy Sefer Torah project, the fund will enable every student at SDJA to participate with a scribe in the writing
of a new Sefer Torah to be dedicated in May 2009 and support Jewish education throughout the school. The
Calderon’s sons, Jack, Moises and Salomon currently attend SDJA.
ANNUAL EVERY CHILD CAMPAIGN
The Every Child Campaign, co-chaired this year by José Aroeste and Denise Handler Shoemaker, supports
school-wide educational excellence and financial aid. The Annual Every Child Dinner, co-chaired by Marsha
and Howard Berkson, Karen and Roberto Jinich, and Tammy and Clive Moch, honored Karen and Glenn Doshay. The tireless efforts of numerous campaign and dinner volunteers helped the campaign raise an unprecedented $730,000.
