Excellence in Action –
Centering our work on
excellence isn’t something
we do periodically, it is a
way of living in Lakeshore.
This fall there were MANY
examples of excellence in
action (by individuals, teams,
and groups of people) that
could be brought to your
attention: some in the area
of athletics, others in the fine
and performing arts, and yet
others in the scholastic areas.
This month I have chosen
to highlight a special award
being given to our ninth
grade students in the area of
scholastic achievement.
Bridge Magazine has named
our current 9th graders
Academic State Champs
for their stellar performance
on the 8th Grade MEAP
Reading test last year…
State Champs in Reading!
Bridge Magazine decided
to elevate the importance
of student achievement
by staging an “Academic
State Championship Playoff
Series.” Using a database
of school statistics, Bridge
is honoring champions in
academic categories ranging
from fourth grade reading
to college readiness and
graduation rates.
On November 1st the
magazine announced 213
school districts that made
the “quarterfinals” for eight
academic categories with
schools split into divisions
based on community type

A New Community-Driven
Facility Study is Underway –
After reflecting on the May
2011 bond election results and
comments from staff and the
community-at-large, the Board
of Education has decided to
“go back to the drawing board”
and take a fresh look at the
district facility issues. The
facility improvement study
process for the next year is
very different than the process
that was used in the past. This
process has been designed
to include our community as
much as possible – in fact, we
reference it as a “communitydriven/communityengagement” process.

Annual Cross Country Meet
The annual elementary Cross Country meet was held after school at Roosevelt
Elementary on October 27. The meet was open to all 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade
Lakeshore students. We had 126 children sign-up to run the 1.2 mile course.
We would like to thank all of the parent and staff volunteers that helped out at
the meet. The high school Cross Country teams also came out to help our young
runners out on the course. We would also like to thank the Vergot family for
donating apples to all of our participants. Great job everyone!

SUPERINTENDENT CONTINUED ...
While that study is taking place,
representatives from Kingscott,
Granger Construction, the Board
of Education, and I are meeting
with staff and members of our
community to learn more about
their concerns, questions, and
recommendations for future
facility improvements. These
meetings are being held in a
variety of places, and at many
different times (morning,
afternoon, and evening), in an
effort to reach as many people
as possible. The schedule for
these gatherings can be found
on the district website and
were advertised in the Herald
Palladium. Thank you to Berts
Breakfast Korner, Baroda Tap,
Big Boy, Martins, South Shore
Racquet Club, Hometown Deli
in Baroda, Ruthies, and the
Lakeshore Rotary for allowing
us to meet with folks in their
businesses. Thanks too, to
the Lakeshore school staff, the
various booster organizations, the
Lakeshore Alumni Association
and the executive boards of the
elementary and middle school
PTO organizations for sharing
their perspectives on potential
facility improvement plans.

There will be three phases to this project:
•The first phase runs from October of 2011December 2011 and will focus on “Understanding
the Past.”
During the first phase the Board will develop a
charge for a Facilities Improvement Team (FIT),
establish the FIT, and invite community feedback
about the past by going out into the community
and speaking with our residents.
•The second phase runs from January of 2012
through May of 2012 and will focus on “Looking to
the Future.”

Wild Wednesday
It’s a “Wild Wednesday” in preschool!
In the last two months, preschoolers have participated in two exciting “Wild Wednesdays.” Our first excursion took us on
a scavenger hunt through the mysterious “Holly Woods.” Each preschooler had a partner and clipboard full of pictures
as they wandered through the woods in search of exciting pieces of nature. We used our noses to smell pine needles, our
eyes to spot colorful red berries on various plants, our ears to hear the birds and the rustling of the leaves, and our hands to
touch all kinds of things, including sticky sap!
Our second excursion took us on a journey as we read a book about our friend, Bear. We matched clues in the book with
things in our Hollywood Garden, the playground, and the “Holly Woods.” We were very excited to get to the next clue in
the book, which led us to our final destination in the “Holly Woods” to search for our very own pumpkin that was hiding
and waiting for us to find it. Every preschooler enjoyed getting to know our garden and wooded area at school during both
of our exciting excursions. We are looking forward to more adventures in the future!

Writing Mini-Offices The Lakeshore Excellence Founda-
tion provided funds for a valuable new writing tool in Mrs.
Butcher’s first grade classroom, “Writing Mini-Offices.”
Traditionally, teachers have used file folders to create a
private writing space for students, while gluing on support
tools, such as word wall and other high-frequency words.
Mrs. Butcher liked
this general idea, but
wanted to take it one
step further and make
her offices more personal and something
that could be changed
throughout the year
to adapt to the everchanging word wall
and increasing knowledge and needs of students. The idea
of using plastic restaurant menus was born - and LEF was
there to provide the funding to purchase a full set for the
classroom! Students now have individualized “All About
Me” pages that are inserted into their “Writing Mini-Office”
(or menu) that include family members’ names, pets, family
vacation destinations, hobbies, and so on (completed by parents). The pages inside the menu change regularly to meet
the needs of students’ writing goals. This has been a VERY
valuable tool for Mrs. Butcher’s emergent writers.
Calling All Colors
Second grade students from Hollywood Elementary
School are participating in Calling All Colors this year.
Calling All
Colors is
an innovative program
designed to
unite children from
diverse ethnic
backgrounds
that otherwise
may not have
the opportunity to meet.
Two classes, one from Hollywood and one from
Benton Harbor Area Schools, meet for two sessions at
the Salvation Army building in Benton Harbor. The
children participate together in fun, structured activities designed to foster feelings of understanding and
inclusion. The focus is on how people are different
and how they are the same. (In the Lakeshore guidance
curriculum, our second graders learn that although each
person is a unique individual, we all share many things
in common.) The children are excited about making
new friends, and follow up with a letter exchange and a
springtime “reunion” picnic.
823 Letters to Soldiers Overseas from Lakeshore Elementary Students

Sometimes all it takes is a suggestion
to start something wonderful. Grandma
B, as Sandy Bauschke is commonly
referred to by Lakeshore Elementary students, initiated a letter writing
project for a great cause. The seed was
planted when Grandma B was watching
HLN’s Morning Express with Robin
Meade. HLN reported that “The Bert
Show,” which airs on Atlanta’s Q100
and Nashville’s i106, was inviting lis-
teners to send the station letters of thanks
for overseas troops. In turn, the radio program promised to get those letters in the
hands of “every single soldier stationed
or deployed outside the United States”
on Thanksgiving Day. That doesn’t only
mean troops in Iraq and Afghanistan, but
ALL troops in any part of the world: Germany, Egypt, Malaysia, Japan, etc.; even
the smallest deployment will get letters.

made during art class with the project being overseen by our elementary art teachers Nancy Anderson and

Kindergarten Pumpkin Math
Monster Exchange –
An Exercise in Descriptive Writing
The fifth grade students at Roosevelt
had a blast participating in the monster
exchange project. Each student created
a monster that included several colors
and at least three different shapes. Once
their monster was created, they used
their writing skills to write a detailed description of how to draw their monsters.
Their description had to be organized,
include good word choice and directions.
Students then exchanged their monster
description with another student. Each
child was then faced with the challenge
of re-drawing a monster based on the
written description they were given. In
the end we compared original monsters
to the re-drawn monsters. All of the
monster creations were spectacular!
Kindergartners in Miss Deeb’s
class explored math concepts
while carving pumpkins this
Halloween. They talked about
making good predictions called
educated guesses. Each child
got to predict how many seeds
were in their pumpkin. Once the
pumpkins had been carved, the
seeds were separated from the
pulp. The children sorted their seeds into groups of ten and then counted
them. Then, they looked to see whose guess was the closest.
Roosevelt’s Courageous Kids
This year, our school has adopted the theme of Courage! We are practicing being courageous enough to
be ourselves, stand up for what
is right, be assertive, help others,
and much more. When students
(or teachers) spot someone being
brave, they can nominate one
another for the Kids of Courage
award. Chosen students get their
picture taken and it’s hung in the
hall to share with others what
being courageous looks like. It’s
a fun way to celebrate having the

5th Grade Studies Core Democratic Values
Our fifth grade students
spent time learning
the Core Democratic
Values, which are the
fundamental beliefs
of our nation. One of
these values we live by
as American citizens is
Patriotism. Patriotism
is showing a love and
devotion for our country. Some ways we can
show patriotism is by displaying the flag, celebrating important
national holidays like Veteran’s Day or Independence Day, and
wearing red, white, and blue. Core Democratic Values can be
seen in our daily lives through what we do and how we act.

Native Americans of Michigan
After learning about the Native American tribes
of Michigan, Miss
Crockett’s
third grade
class created books,
dioramas
and posters
showcasing
the information they
had learned. The students chose one of the Three
Fires, the Ojibwa, Potawatomi, or Ottawa tribe, to
feature in their project. After completing the projects, the students presented them to the rest of the
class. Everyone worked very hard and the projects
look wonderful!

Elementary Specialists and the Academic Connection
Recorder Club members Kennedy, Darryl,

recorders. Recorder Club meets once a week
after school in the Stewart music room and is
made up of 4th and 5th graders from Roosevelt and Stewart Schools.
Math, reading, and science are all important. But did you know that physical education, music, art and guidance all promote academic success? Consider:
- skipping, a skill taught in Music & Motion classes, promotes reading readiness
- singing enhances fluent reading
- Current research shows that students who receive guidance instruction improved,
on average, by 11 percentile points on standardized achievement tests. (The Collaborative for Academic, Social and Emotional Learning)
- participation in the Arts develops work habits and a sense of responsibility
- “A child paints with his brain and not with his hands.” - Michaelangelo
Music, art, physical education, and guidance are an essential part of your child’s
education. Get to know these important professionals who instruct your child on a
weekly basis.
Hands-on Experiments
Fifth graders at Stewart have been
excited to take part in hands-on experiments each week as part of the new
Battle Creek Science kits that have been
adopted this year. Their current unit
of study is, “Forces and Motion.” The
students have been working together in
teams of five to six to accomplish group
goals. This picture displays a group
building a track on an elevated table.
Their goal was to see how they could slow down the motion of the marble to have it
take the longest to get down the track in comparison to the other groups in the class.
They were able to accomplish their goal by using other objects to create friction and
barriers along the way.

Make A Difference Day
The students at Roosevelt collected donations for Animal Aid of Southwest Michigan. Animal Aid is a local organization
that fosters animals in need of healthy
happy homes! The students celebrated
their own “furry friends” by sharing pictures of their pets on the school bulletin
board.

options and associated costs. At
the conclusion of this phase, the
Board will make a decision about
whether to ask the community
to support another bond project
and to determine (based on the
recommendations of the FIT)
what the scope of that project
would be.

Spot It and Stop It - Say NO to Bullying
The month of November was dedicated to educating students how to spot
and stop bullying. Activities and discussions were done in student’s advisory classes. The sixth grade focused on “empathy.” They discussed how
to understand how other people feel and to put themselves in other people’s
shoes. The seventh graders discussed how gossiping, taunting, and bullying
are all types of harassment. They also watched movie clips and did activities
to reinforce the ideas. The eighth grade classes learned about cyber bullying
and how to not be part of it. All of the classes learned about bystanders and
how they could be part of the solution and not the problem. This education
is done to continue to help Lakeshore Middle School continue to be a great
place to learn and the students better follow the school motto “Take Care of
Yourself, Take Care of Each other, and Take Care of this Place.”
ALL MIXED-UP
On Tuesday, November 8th, Lakeshore
Middle School celebrated the annual Mix It
Up at Lunch Day! The goal of Mix It Up
Day is to create an inclusive atmosphere
in the cafeteria and provide opportunities
to meet or get to know new classmates…..
perhaps make a new friend. Students were
assigned tables as they arrived in the cafeteria! Pizza Hut pizza, mixed up music,
table challenges and trivia contests all
added to the festive mood and encouraged
conversation and collaboration.
Taking Charge
The student council at the middle school took charge of the weekly school meeting
on November 1st with great success! Highlights included the words of wisdom; the
presentation of Special Person of the Week award to Jamie Belt, Sydney Weaver,
and Dani Valles for their regular assistance with Homework Lunch; a group poetry
recitation about the dangers of gossip; a breast cancer fundraiser kickoff; a pie
eating contest; and a special presentation by 7th grader Cameron Mason. Cameron
was hit by a motorcycle while riding his bike this summer and recovered from the
accident because he was wearing a helmet. Cameron wanted to share his story and
encourage his fellow students to always wear a helmet while bike-riding or skateboarding. From honoring exemplary classmates to discouraging gossip, pitching in
for cancer research, and sharing wise advice, students at LMS lead by example to
make their world a better place.

Safe Driving - A Hands On Lesson
The High School S.A.D.D.
Group sponsored the
GEM car from the Berrien
Springs-Oronoko Township police. The GEM car
is a Global Electric Motors
electric powered car made
by Chrysler. The car is a
tool to educate high school
students about safe driving
and the dangers of driving
while drinking as well as
driving while distracted. Throughout the day Mr. McKean brought
his juniors to the south parking lot to drive and ride on a test course.
Each student drove the course twice; the first drive was without any
impairment or distractions, the second time students were distracted
with special glasses, loud radio, and yelling, which inhibited their
driving ability. All of the students who participated gained an
insight to the seriousness of driving while drinking or driving while
distracted.
The S.A.D.D. group would like to thank Officers Wolff and Chartrand
for risking their lives sitting in the passenger seat all day long!
M.S.B.O.A. District Six All-Star Band
Eleven high school students from the band
program auditioned and were accepted into the
M.S.B.O.A. District Six All-Star Band. This
prestigious ensemble is comprised of outstanding musicians from Berrien, Cass, and Van
Buren Counties. The All-Star Band is premiering a special commissioned piece by national
composer, James Curnow, who will also be the
guest conductor for this event. The students
are: Kaytlynn Toering, Brianne Olsen, Rachel
Tuller, Alicia Gilford, Brittney Eyerly, Zach
Tuller, Derek Sims, Lauren Williams, Sydney
Schaub, Sam Kerill, and Evan Pille.

Key Club Honored
Lakeshore High School’s Key Club was
honored by Berrien RESA at a Ceremony
October 26, 2011. They were the only
student group to receive a Partnership
Award for the work with Blossomland
Learning Center. Key Club students
organized a fun day for Blossomland
students with various games and activities
including inflatable fun houses and arts
and crafts.

BCD Winter Concert
The Berrien County Dancers will hold their Winter Dance Concert on
Friday, December 16 and Saturday, December 17 at 7:00 P.M. at the
Lakeshore High School Auditorium. Tickets go on sale December 5.
Reserved seating tickets for all ages, available only in advance, are
$10. General admission tickets, for ages 4 and up, are $5 in advance

dance fitness at this BCD fundraising event on Saturday, January 21
at Lakeshore High School. The 45-minute classes cost only $5 each!

MCBA Outstanding Educator Award
On Saturday, November 5, 2011 at the state competition in
Detroit, Mrs. VonKoenig was presented with the Michigan
Competing Band Association Outstanding Educator Award.
The MCBA Outstanding Educator Award is presented
to honor and recognize outstanding music educators
for their leadership, commitment, and significant
contribution to their students and the membership of
MCBA.
Congratulations to the Lakeshore Marching Band on a
wonderful season. At the State MCBA competition at Ford
Field in Detroit, they placed 4th in their flight with this
year’s show, The Journey.
The Lakeshore Marching Band Invitational on October 8th
was a huge success. A huge thank you goes out to all of
the volunteers that made this event possible, and also to the
public for their support.
If you are the parent of a middle school or high school student, please join in and help support our wonderful
Lakeshore Band Program! The next band parent meeting
will be held on Monday, December 5th at 7:00 P.M. in the
middle school band room.

Eight Lakeshore High School choir members have
been selected to participate in the Michigan School
Vocal Music Association (MSVMA) Regional Honors Choir and will go on to audition for State Honors
Choir. Congratulations to Becca Brunner, Rachel
Marquardt, Savannah Lents, Brittany Millham,
Mallory Mishler, Alicia Gilford, Lillianna Andrews
and Daniel Davenport! The choir will perform in the
Dalton Recital Center at WMU in Kalamazoo on
December 3.

An Easy Fundraiser to Support the Lakeshore Band
Athletic events are a great way to entertain the entire
family. Individual event prices for tickets purchased
at the gate are as follows: varsity, junior varsity,
and freshman contests are $5.00 per person, middle
school contests are $3.00 per person.
The Lakeshore Band is enrolled in the fundraiser Meijer Community Rewards. Under this program, Meijer offers two ways
to support our band program. The first option is to apply for a
Meijer 1 Card in store or at Meijer.com/rewards. This is NOT
a credit card. Once you receive your Meijer 1 Card, simply
present it each time you pay with cash or a “linked” debit card,
and the band will automatically receive a .5% rebate. Purchases made with checks and other credit cards do not qualify.
The Lakeshore Lancer Winter Athletic schedules can
be found on the Lakeshore website. Visit the high
school main page, then click the extra curricular
