THE IMMACULATA AWARD
This award, which is named in honor of the Blessed Virgin
Mary, who as the Immaculate Conception is the Patroness of
Cathedral Preparatory Seminary, is presented each year to
alumni who possess the values that Cathedral Prep represents
through service to Church and community. This year's
honorees exemplify these qualities and we are blessed to have
two such leaders in our alumni family.
From the Office of Development and Alumni Affairs
Dear Brother Alumni and Friends of Cathedral,
When a priest is ordained, he is ordained to service for the Church wherever his Bishop needs
him. On the day of Msgr. Walter C. Murphy’s funeral Mass, Bishop DiMarzio wanted to speak
to me and asked me if I would be willing to study for a doctorate in Theology, with a
specialization in Dogmatic and Fundamental Theology. After prayer and consultation, I said yes
to this assignment, which will probably take about three years to complete. These doctoral studies
will begin in September, and upon completion, I will return to the Brooklyn Diocese and serve in
whatever capacity the Bishop needs me to serve with this degree.
I will return to my other alma mater, the Pontifical North American College in Rome, this time at the graduate house for
priests, the Casa Santa Maria, and will begin studies at the Pontifical University of Saint Thomas Aquinas
(Angelicum).
It will certainly be a huge change for me, going from teacher to student, as I start these studies for an advanced degree. I
ask for your prayers as I prepare to leave Cathedral Preparatory Seminary. Since 2004, I have tried to serve Cathedral
Prep to the best of my ability as teacher of English, Theology, Fine Arts, Italian, Philosophy and Psychology, as Director
of Formation, Director of Middle States Accreditation, Director of the Troike Program, and most recently as Spiritual
Director and Director of Development and Alumni Affairs here. Cathedral has been the center of my life and I am so very
grateful for this experience, which I know has changed my life.
I am truly thankful to Bishop DiMarzio for having assigned me to Cathedral. These have been the happiest days of my
life and I have grown so much as a priest, as a teacher and a person and I hope to take the multitude of experiences with
which I have been blessed here at Cathedral with me to Rome and to every other pastoral assignment I will have in the
future. I thank Fr. Fred Marano, ’82, and all the faculty, staff, alumni, benefactors and students of Cathedral, especially
Mr. Joseph Dibs, ’92, whose friendship I truly consider to be one of the greatest gifts in my life, Mrs. Marie Snadecky,
a dear friend and co-worker and Mr. Lou D’Amico, ’82, my teacher in so many ways. The priests with whom I have
served in the past eight years, Fr. Marano, Fr. Jim Kuroly, ’98, Fr. Kevin Abels, ’94, Msgr. Bill Flood , Msgr. Walter
Murphy, ’49, Msgr. Jim Cooney, and Msgr. Joe Calise, ’72, have taught me so very much, each in their own way and I
thank them for this grace.

From the President's Desk
Dear Brother Alumni and Friends,
It's that time of year! First Communions, Confirmations, and now the Graduation Season has begun.
Colleges go first, then high schools, and finally the elementary schools.. It is a time of passing, change and it
always has me asking, “Where did the time go? How did I get this old?” I just officiated at my godchild's
wedding, the son of one of my classmates, Mike Forde, ’73, who also became a grandfather for the second
time. I still see Mike and I playing basketball for Mr. Payne and Mr. Dilg or in Mr. DiMaura's math class
almost like it was in June of 1973 when we graduated.
Time and life are so fleeting. Before you know the next school year begins and we get caught up in our
routine again. This year the end of Cathedral Prep's school year is bittersweet. Fr. John Cush, ’90, who has done so much for
Cathedral Prep for the last eight years, is going to continue his studies in Rome beginning in September. Fr. Cush has also done so
much for the alumni and the Alumni Executive Board and we will miss his energy and support. I have known Fr. Cush for many
years (ask him about his first wake service as a priest in Brooklyn) and know him to be a man of God who is filled with the Love of
Christ and he will bring that with him wherever life takes him.
Good luck, John, and God bless. You will be missed, but you will be in our thoughts and prayers.
Fr. Bill Sweeney, '73
Alumni Association President
From the Rector's Desk
Dear Friends,
As we come to the end of another academic year at Cathedral Prep Seminary, I want to thank you for the great
things that we have been able to accomplish together for Cathedral throughout this year. It has been a
tremendous year and it could not have been accomplished without all of you, our family and friends.
There are so many people whom I should thank for all their hard work. Michael Cox, ’74Q and the members
of the Financial Development Board, Fr. Bill Sweeney, ’73Q and the members of the Alumni Executive
Board, Dr. Phil Franco, ’93 and John Power, ’85Q and the members of our Annual Appeal Committee, Paul
Carr, ’80Q and the members of the Golf Committee, Denis Tarpey, ’65C and the members of the Hall of
Fame Committee, Bill Moloney, ’71B and the members of the Immaculata Award and Reunion Committee and
Jerry Magaldi, ’74Q and the members of the Saint Matthew Society. This is just a small selection of those
who have helped to make 2011-2012 one of the best years ever at Cathedral.
This has also been a year of change for us at Cathedral Prep, especially since April. We mourned the loss of our beloved
adjunct Spiritual Director and former business manager, Msgr. Walter C. Murphy, ’49. As Easter begin, I learned that I would be
leaving my ministry as Spiritual Director of Cathedral Seminary House of Formation in Douglaston and coming to serve full-time to
Cathedral Prep. In June, Fr. James Kuroly, ’98 was appointed to serve as Spiritual Director of Cathedral Prep beginning in August
2012, while remaining as Director of Recruitment. Tim McCleary, former Athletic Director and Director of Stewardship (2005-2010)
will be returning as Director of Development to join Joe Dibs, ’92, current Director of Stewardship in the Development and Alumni
Affairs Office, also beginning in August.
In May, we learned that Bishop DiMarzio had assigned Fr. John Cush, ’90, our Spiritual Director, Director of Development
and Alumni Affairs, Troike Program Director and teacher of Theology, English, Italian and Fine Arts back to his other alma mater, the
Pontifical North American College in Rome, Italy for a period of three years. Fr. Cush will be completing the Doctorate in Sacred
Theology (S.T.D.) in dogmatic theology at the Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas in Urbe (The Angelicum), while living at
NAC’s Casa Santa Maria. We wish Fr. Cush well as he begins this new aspect of his priestly ministry and thank God for all he has
done for Cathedral Prep during his eight years on faculty here. As teacher, spiritual director, alumni director, development director,
Troike Program director, Right-To-Life coordinator, Knights of Columbus Squire chaplain, former director of recruitment, director of
formation and Middle States reaccreditation director, Fr. Cush has given his life to Cathedral and we are grateful. Fr. Cush will leave
the faculty after serving in the Troike Program this summer. We promise him our prayers as he begins this academic endeavor in
Rome.
We are blessed at Cathedral Prep, by our greatest natural resource: our people- faculty, current and past, alumni, families,
staff, friends and benefactors! Let us pray for each other!

AT THE PREP
CATHEDRAL PREP'S SPORTS HIGHLIGHTS & INTERSCHOLASTIC AWARDS DINNER
by John O'Brien, ’01, Athletic Director
The 2011-2012 school year was filled with many highlights for our athletic
program. Some highlights of the first semester include senior Conor Gallagher
’12 representing Cathedral Prep in the NYS Cross Country Championships, the JV
Bowling Team winning the “B Division” Championship, and the inaugural, first
annual Jim Dilg Christmas Basketball tournament. Pictured to the left is the
Varsity Basketball Team with Coach Frank McQuail and Coach Ivan Cohill.
Pictures of the tournament can be seen on our school website at
www.cathedralprepseminary.com. The second semester was highlighted by our
Varsity Baseball Team having a very successful season. The team finished with a
6-6 record and won two playoff games before being defeated in the semi-finals.
The annual Interscholastic Awards Dinner was held on May 24 th. Our guest
speaker was Mr. Jim Dilg, who was invited back to Cathedral (though he certainly needs no invitation) one year after his retirement.
Not surprisingly, Mr. Dilg's words to our student-athletes and their parents were truly inspiring. As always, three major school-wide
awards were presented to three well-deserving students. The Msgr. Martin Bannen Scholar-Athlete Award was given to Michael
Piskozub, ’12, the Brian Payne Sportsman of the Year Award was given to Miguel Boodram, ’12, and the newly renamed Jim
Dilg Athlete of the Year Award was presented to Conor Gallagher, ’12. Congratulations to these young men on their tremendous
achievements and to each of our student-athletes and members of the coaching staff for a great year! We look forward to another great
year in 2012-2013 and hope to see many alumni at our games, matches, and meets.
Communion Breakfast- Sunday, March 11, 2012
On Sunday, March 11, 2012, Cathedral Prep hosted its annual Communion Breakfast. Mass was celebrated by Fr. Fred Marano, ’82,
Rector-Principal. At the breakfast, student leaders of service- lectors, extraordinary ministers of Holy Communion, altar servers,
choir members, Student Council, and the National Honors Society- were recognized for their commitments to serve the Cathedral Prep
community. Our presenter this year was James Flynn, ’76, who gave a stirring reflection on service. Over a hundred attended
including students, parents, faculty and alumni.
Cathedral Prep Hosts Queens Board of District Deputies Knights of Columbus Communion Breakfast
On Sunday, March 18, 2012, The Queens Board of District Deputies of the Knights of Columbus held their annual communion
breakfast at Cathedral Preparatory Seminary. S.K. Luther S. McNeal, PGK, PFN, District Deputy 24th District and Chairman of the
Queens Board of District Deputies, coordinated the breakfast along with the other members of the Board: Peter Weidner (24th
District); Andrew R. Giacomazza (27th District); Frank Irace (25th District); Fred Quinones (26th District); Antonio G. Capitly (28th
District) and Timothy F. Farrell (29th District).
Almost 100 people attended the Mass, celebrated by Fr. John Cush, '90, Director of Development and Alumni Affairs, himself a
third degree Knight and associate chaplain of the Nativity/Fr. Nosser Council #12675 in Ozone Park. In his homily, Fr. Cush urged the
Knights to stand as a sign of the great theological virtues of faith, hope and love in a world that seems, at times, to embrace the culture
of death. The Mass was served by the young men who make up Cathedral Prep's Squire Circle, named in honor of Frank Yerk,
thanked the Knights for their inspiration and support. The Knights were incredibly generous to Cathedral Prep as always, both
temporally and spiritually. We thank them for their love and support of Cathedral and the priesthood.

abortion clinic for a greater respect for all human life from conception to natural
death.
The Respect Life Club is headed by Dennis Soriano, ’13, a parishioner of Saint
Michael’s (Brooklyn). Under Dennis’ leadership, the group meets every Thursday
after Benediction to pray the Rosary for Life and to learn more about the moral
teachings of the Church concerning bioethics and social justice. Pictured to the

Annual Appeal Highlights
by John Power, ’85, and Dr. Phil Franco, ’93, Co-Chairmen of the 2011-2012 Annual Appeal
It seems that another school year has come and gone at Cathedral Prep. Another group of young men have had the benefit of an
education that is grounded in faith, our Catholic faith. Regardless of whether any of them are ordained, each and every one of them is
destined to a higher calling. This calling is to be, for the rest of their lives, a walking example of men of faith. Although the primary
purpose of Cathedral Prep is to provide a nurturing environment where vocations can grow and flourish, the fact remains that the
majority of the young men who attend Cathedral are not ordained. That majority still benefits from the foundations we received
within the halls of our Alma Mater. If you are reading this newsletter, you have significant ties to Cathedral. You, or someone you
love, has benefitted from their experience at Cathedral.
For those of you who have already given a gift, we thank you for your support. We have not achieved our goals this year and are
reaching out to you again in the hope that we may yet achieve the goal over the summer. It is well known that the economy is not
what any of us would hope it to be. Despite that fact, the needs of Cathedral Prep are still there and we pray that everyone who is in a
position to help Cathedral will do so. I would point out that those of us who were not called to the priesthood are also likely to be
those that are best able to help financially. Each year a new group of young men come to Cathedral with one thing in common – a
willingness to consider a call to the priesthood. Each year a few young men leave Cathedral and go on to take the next steps toward
that goal. The need for priests is evident; we all can see that in our parishes. We should all try to find a way to pitch in and repay the
benefits we received in order to keep this institution delivering on its mission. Whatever amount you might be able to contribute,
please do so. Let’s all do a little and collectively we can achieve much.
We would like to remind everybody that it is not too late to make a contribution for this year. The Annual Appeal will wrap up on
August 31, 2012. If you or someone you know whose name does not appear on our list of donors to the Annual Appeal below and
you would like to give, please contact the Alumni Office at (718) 592-6800, ext. 137 or at [email protected].
God bless all of you and your families have a blessed and relaxing summer. Thank you for all you do on behalf of Cathedral Prep.

SAINT MATTHEW SOCIETY MASS AND NETWORKING NIGHT
by Jerry Magaldi, ’74, Saint Matthew Society Committee Chairman
The St. Matthew’s Society’s mission is to encourage people to come together and share their talents whether personal, business or
financials with our alumni, non-alumni, and especially the school. Our second objective is to raise funds from corporations or
individuals for tuition assistance for current students at Cathedral Prep or those who desire to attend but cannot afford to do so.
Therefore, on March 8th, 2012 we once again held our annual St. Matthew’s Society Dinner with the theme of sharing one’s talents.
This year we had over 140 people mostly consisting of non-alumni representing different corporations. The companies present were
there to share business opportunities with each other and offer services to the individuals present. Please use the link below to obtain a
copy of the 2012 Saint Matthew Society Directory:
http://www.cathedralprepalumni.com/resources/resmgr/SMS_Directory_2011.2012_03.0.pdf.
Once again everyone expressed that they enjoyed a night of spirituality, networking opportunities and a phenomenal culinary event.
We started the evening with a mass celebrated by Fr. John Cush, ’90, and concelebrated with seven other priests from both the
Brooklyn and Rockville Centre dioceses. Mass was followed by a homemade gourmet dinner prepared by several alumni and over 20
current Cathedral Prep tudents led by the master chef, Billy Carauna, ’72. Our guest speaker Mike Johnson, a former NFL player
and now the CFO at NFL, Inc.; AT&T; and MorganStanley, spoke of how to bring the Christian message into the workplace.
However, the highlight of the evening was a talk given by Mike Meyer, ’12, then a current Senior at Cathedral Prep, who touched our
hearts with his passion about vocation and Cathedral and how others’ generosity allowed him to experience this. Both Fr. Marano and
Fr. Cush also spoke detailing the good things that are happening at Cathedral Prep. All in attendance were asked to share what ever
talents they have with each other. I explained that one way of sharing their talents was to help those who need employment by taking
their resumes and sharing it with our contacts at other companies looking for good people. Another way to share your talents was to
help us raise funds for our tuition assistance program.
All the companies present were asked beforehand to make a financial
contribution just to come to the event to the Annual Appeal.
Through St. Matthew’s spirit and intersession, I believe we are giving our Alumni a place to turn in times of their needs. It has also
given alumni, non-alumni and corporations an opportunity to share their business with our Cathedral family. But mostly, it has
expanded our family to include all those attending that were never part of Cathedral. This event has grown in attendance to over 140
people and dollars raised from last year’s $10,000 to over $12,000. But we need to do more. It must continue to grow and we must
raise more funds for the students. We must continue to help each other as we are all part of the past and current Cathedral family. I
encourage everyone to become part of our family by helping in any way you can. If you are employed and know of job opportunities
contact us at Cathedral. One other way of helping is by donating whatever you can to the tuition assistance program. We are also
looking for volunteers to be put on a list of whom we can call to donate funds when a student is having problems meeting their
payments at some point of the year. If you are interested in any of these suggestions, please contact Fr. Cush and let us know how you
can help.
Thanks to you all who have participated and for those who will soon become part of our family. With God’s intersession, we pray that
this will continue to grow, our goals will be met, and we will see vocations blossom. Please keep us all in your prayers and “May God
continue to bless and spread His graces on Cathedral, her students and staff, our extended family members, and all of the Alumni.”
13th ANNUAL HALL OF FAME DINNER - SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 4, 2012
Denis Tarpey, ’65, Hall of Fame Chairman
On February 4, 2012, we recognized six men who brought positive recognition to Cathedral Prep and themselves while they were at
Cathedral and in the years after their graduations. They were selected by the Hall of Committee which included Fr. John Cush, ’90,
Spiritual Director and Deirector of Development and Alumni Affairs; Jim Dilg, former Faculty, former Athletic Director and Coach,
and former Director of Alumni Affairs; Brian Payne, also former Faculty and Coach; Pat Higgins, ’84, former Athletic Director,
former Dean of Activities, Faculty and Coach; Bill Maloney, ’71, Vice-President of the Alumni Association, and myself. It is not an
easy task, but it is a a happy one. We continue to welcome your nominations for future years. Please send such nominations to the
Alumni Office. These six men seemed to believe in the words of Henry Ford when he said, “Coming together is a beginning; keeping
together is progress; working together is success.”
For a small school like Cathedral Prep to be successful, it is necessary to get every ounce of talent out of the athletes who arrive at
Elmhurst. A coach's job is made easier when he has individuals like tonight's group who lead by hustle, determination, and example.
We know: if you have tried to do something and failed, you are vastly better off than if you tried to do nothing and succeeded.
Cathedral Prep has always prided itself on the spirit of its athletes and student body. These men truly embody this sentiment.
Fr. Bill Sweeney, ’73: It is a fact that any big event or program needs more people behind the scenes than in front, and without these
people great things just do not take place. Father Bill is one such person who began his Cathedral Prep connection with his
membership on the J.V. Basketball Team in high school and continued with his involvement with the student government, yearbook
12
and other activities. His involvement in Cathedral was total. People in the know must have realized that this priest with the perpetual
smile and tremendous patience belonged working with young people, and so he has been a tremendous asset to Cathedral Prep, St.
Francis Prep, and parishes in the Brooklyn Diocese.
Msgr. John Brown, ’75: It has been said there are three kinds of people in life: those who make things happen, those who watch
things happen, and those who wonder, “What happened?” Msgr. Brown, a student from Brooklyn, is a person who made things happen
and still does. He made a name for himself on the basketball court in high school where he was named the MVP of the program.
Since becoming a priest, he has been, among other things, the Personnel Director for the diocese. He must have done something right
since he now has a place by the beach...that being St. Francis de Sales in Belle Harbor (NY) where he is the pastor.
James Flynn, ’76: There is an old joke that you should always walk in the woods with someone slower than yourself in case you get
chased by a bear. If that advice is true, do not go into the wilds with James Flynn or his brother John. They were both known for their
Track skills in Cathedral with Jim establishing a school record for the 600-yard dash. His relay team also set a record for the mile
relay. In high school, college, and life, Jim has been involved in numerous activities which point to the higher values of our mission
on earth.
Jason Harewood, ’78: Some of us are still waiting to score our thousandth point in basketball (even counting scrimmages and
backyard games). Our next honoree scored 1,000 in high school alone. After college, he continued to show his love and skill for the
game by playing and teaching many young ladies the skills and nuances of the game in such a way that over 25 of these young women
received athletic scholarships to play at the college level. It says a great deal for people with gifts to work to pass those same gifts on
to others.
Thomas McCarthy, ’87: Tom was involved in many activities at the prep and was recognized in his senior year as Athlete of the Year.
A sign of hard work was his being named Most Improved in baseball and basketball in 1985. The fact which struck me as amazing in
this time of “pitch counts” in the majors was Tom’s winning both games of the championship tournament by pitching 15 innings in the
same day. Maybe that is why he needs to have special shirts made with his pitching sleeve being 5 inches longer (blame his high
school coach!). He has served NYC well by being part of the long arm of the law for the NYPD as a sergeant.
James Kelly, ’99: Cathedral Prep in Elmhurst had a sport which wasn't a choice in the “old days of Brooklyn”: soccer. If you talk to
coaches who have worked at Cathedral in the 90s, the word “dominant” is commonly used to describe Jim Kelly, who made a name
for himself on the soccer field. His skills and fire would enable him to play 4 years of college soccer at St. Thomas Aquinas.
Presently, he is a special education teacher for the NYC Department of Education.

FINANCIAL DEVELOPMENT BOARD ENDS 2011 - 2012 SESSION
by Michael Cox, ’74, Chairman
The 2011 – 2012 school year proved to be another year of both transition and challenge for the board and yet a productive year overall
for fund raising and a great year for growing and creating new relationships within the Cathedral Community. First order of business
was to conduct a search to fill two vacancies on the board after both Steve Somers, ’78 and Danny Friel, ’73 had to leave to fulfill
ever more demanding business obligations. I am pleased to report that this process yielded great results in the addition of Mr. Jim
Gange as a board member with the approval of Bishop DiMarzio and Fr. Fred Marano, ’80, our Rector-Principal. The selection process was streamlined greatly by the fact that Jim is well known for his support for Cathedral Prep in other areas and he was unanim ously confirmed by the sitting board members without any hesitation or delay. We wish him God’s blessings in his work with the
board and all he does for Cathedral Prep.
Although this year was perhaps the most financially challenging year since this “new” board has been convened every one of our an nual fund raising events this year was successful and although we may have not achieved significant new growth in revenues from
these events none fell short of prior results. I would point out that the St. Matthew Society Annual Mass and Dinner this year was a
stellar success with a thirty percent increase in attendance and more importantly over a one hundred percent increase in funds raised
for the Tuition Assistance Fund. Congratulations to all who served on the various committees in planning and execution of these
events for these remarkable results.
13
We began a transition of strategy in our fund raising efforts this year and are moving away from an “event-focused” initiative to a “relationship-focused” dynamic. The need for this strategic transition is simply driven by the need for increased funding of school ex penses but even more importantly funding tuition assistance. In support of this new focus Fr. John Cush, ’90, as Director of Development and Alumni Affairs, Lou D’Amico, ’82, our Business Manager, and Joseph Dibs, ’92, our Director of Stewardship , attended a professional fund-raising symposium with Richard Garrigan, Executive Director of the Catholic Organization of Development Executives (CODES), to broaden the scope of their fund-raising perspectives. We have already begun implementing some of
the concepts and ideas that seem best suited to our efforts. We will see the continuation and extension of these new efforts in the years
ahead.
There have been many other issues and events to address this past year and one of the most joyous ones is making an initial explora tion into planning for the 100th Anniversary of Cathedral 2014 – 2015. Be assured you will be informed as to plans for the celebration
as they are finalized.
As many of you know Fr. Cush will be leaving his post as Director of Development and Alumni Affairs to pursue doctoral studies in
Rome at the direction of Bishop DiMarzio. Mere words cannot express the admiration and appreciation I feel for Fr. Cush and his un wavering commitment and dedication to Cathedral and its mission. It has been a singular privilege and a blessing to have worked with
him and I am honored to call him my friend. I am sure I speak for all the board members in wishing him every blessing in his future
studies, work and priesthood.
Finally, Mr. Tim McCleary will be returning to Cathedral in the role of Director of Development. We welcome him back and wish
him God’s blessings and good luck in his new position. I am sure Tim will achieve great success in his mission and prove to be an in novative and dynamic leader for Cathedral Prep’s development efforts. In closing I wish all of you a wonderful summer and thank
you for keeping Cathedral “always in your hearts”.

MORAN MASS
Each year, the family of the late Thomas Moran,’75, gather at Cathedral Preparatory Seminary to celebrate the life and legacy of
Tom. As a proud alumnus of Cathedral Prep, Tom often would regale his wife, Sue, and his children with stories of his days as a
student. After his death, Sue and her family have kept the annual tradition of awarding a young man entering his senior year with a
partial scholarship so that Tom’s love of his time at Cathedral Prep and the important life lessons learned at the Prep could continue
with a new generation. The rising senior honored by the Moran family has to be a man of service to the Cathedral community as well
as the greater area. This year, the Moran family granted the award to Ryan Quinn. Many thanks to the Moran family for their endless
support of Cathedral Prep. Tom is remembered in prayer here at Cathedral and his love for Cathedral is continued in the lives of the
young men like Brendon. Previous Moran Award Winners are:

DAY AT BELMONT
On Saturday, June 16, 2012, Cathedral Prep held its second annual Day at Belmont
Park. It was a fun and successful day, almost doubling the number of people who
attended! We had 116 people present, alumni, friends, benefactors and faculty, all of
whom came out to have a great time, catch up with old friends, meet new friends and
to help the mission of Cathedral Prep Seminary.
Thanks to Rich Schulhoff, ’68Q, pictured to the right, who arranged the whole event
and without whom we could not have the event! Rich was a tremendous host and
made the day fun! Thanks to Rich, the Third Race was named after Cathedral Prep
and Katie McCague, the sister of Patrick McCague, ’11, presented the trophy to
the winning jockey. Kerry Sisson,’67B, from Wells Fargo, assisted in sponsoring the
event and was incredibly helpful in organizing the day.
Dr. John Kehoe, ’66HS, and Rich Schulhoff, ’68Q, were very capable masters of
ceremonies for our raffles, and Mrs. Rosemary McCague, mother of Pat McCague,
’11, truly ran the whole day in terms of raffles, ably assisted by her daughter, Katie. Special thanks to our committee members
Deacon Candidate Eugene Wolfarth and his wife, Brenda, who also contributed to the planning of the day. It was a great day and
continues to be a part of our Cathedral alumni scene! Please join us next year for another day at Belmont! Visit our school website at
www.cathedralprepseminary.com for more pictures of the event.

“POPE NAMES TWO PRIESTS AS AUXILIARY BISHOPS FOR BROOKLYN DIOCESE”
(Brooklyn, NY) Pope Benedict XVI has appointed two priests of the Diocese of Brooklyn
– Msgr. Raymond Chappetto, 66 (Class of 1965), and Msgr. Paul Sanchez, 65 (Class of
1966) – as auxiliary bishops of Brooklyn. Archbishop Carlo Maria Viganò, Apostolic
Nuncio to the United States, made the announcement public today in Washington, D.C.
Bishop Nicholas DiMarzio will ordain the new bishops at a Mass of Episcopal Ordination
to be celebrated at Our Lady of Angels R.C. Church, Brooklyn, on July 11th at 2 p.m.
“These two men are among the most respected priests in the Diocese of Brooklyn.
18
Pictured from left to right: Bishop Paul Sanchez,
’66, and Bishop Raymond Chappetto, ’65.
Fundamentally, they are parish priests at heart. Each is very attentive to the diverse needs of the people they serve,” said Bishop
DiMarzio. “I am also grateful for their assistance in my ministry as bishop. Bishop-elect Chappetto and Bishop-elect Sanchez
consistently offer wise counsel and advice that has been indispensable in the administration of the diocese with respect to parish
reconfiguration and the revitalization of spiritual programs and ministry to priests.”
The Most Reverend Raymond Chappetto was born August 20, 1945, in Astoria. He studied at Our Lady of Angels Seminary, Albany,
where he holds a Master’s of Divinity, as well as a Master of Arts in Religious Education from St. John’s University. He is also
certified in Pastoral Counseling. He was ordained May 29, 1971, by Bishop Francis Mugavero at St. James Pro-Cathedral, Downtown
Brooklyn. His priestly assignments include associate pastor at St. Camillus, Rockaway Beach (1971-75); St. Pius V, Jamaica (197576); Incarnation, Queens Village (1976-81), and St. Helen, Howard Beach (1981-83). He was among the first to be involved in Team
Ministry at Our Lady of Miracles, Canarsie, from 1983-89, where he ultimately then became pastor. He served there until 1995 when
he was named an Episcopal Vicar for Brooklyn West. In 1999, he became pastor of Our Lady of the Snows, Floral Park, where he still
serves. The National Catholic Education Association named him Pastor of the Year in 2008. While remaining pastor of Our Lady of
Snows, Msgr. Chappetto was appointed Minister for Priests and in 2009 he was named Vicar for Clergy and Consecrated Life. His
sister-in-law is a religious sister in the congregation of the Immaculate Heart of Mary.
“I am honored and humbled that the Holy Father would entrust me with such an important ministry in the life of the Church,” said
Bishop-elect Chappetto. “The work of visiting the sick, as well as teaching in our parochial school and celebrating the Sacraments has
kept me grounded for the forty-one years of my priesthood. Despite the greater responsibilities of my new office, I intend to be
faithful to those ministries which have been so nourishing to me these many years.” Bishop-elect Chappetto was named a Prelate of
Honor by Blessed John Paul II in 1997. He speaks English and Italian.
The Most Reverend Paul Sanchez was born November 26, 1946, in Brooklyn. He earned a Bachelor of Arts from St. Bonaventure’s
University, a Master of Arts from the University of Notre Dame and a Licentiate of Sacred Theology from the Pontifical Gregorian
University in Rome.
He was ordained December 17, 1971, by then-Bishop James Hickey (later His Eminence James Cardinal Hickey of Washington, D.C.)
at Saint Peter’s Basilica in Rome. His priestly assignments include Our Lady of Mercy, Forest Hills (1972-75), St. Michael, Flushing
(1975-87), and St. Sebastian, Woodside (1987-91). He served as pastor at St. Agatha, Brooklyn (1991-2001), and Our Lady of Mount
Carmel, (2001-08), while also serving as administrator of St. Margaret Mary, Long Island City. He was named Vicar for Queens North
in June 2008 and, beginning in June 2009, continues to serve as Vicar for Queens. Then Father Sanchez was named vicariate
coordinator for the diocesan Liturgical Commission, January 1975. He served as a member of the Presbyteral Council, January 1984;
member of the diocesan team for Ministry to Priests, January 1985; member, International Committee on English in the Liturgy subcommittee, January 1978 to January 1979. A passionate teacher, he was an adjunct faculty member at Saint John’s University and the
Seminary of the Immaculate Conception in Huntington, New York.
“I have been a priest for forty years and have been privileged to see how Almighty God has used me, despite my many failings and
weaknesses, to build up the kingdom of Heaven. I am deeply grateful to the Holy Father for his confidence and trust in choosing me
to share in the life of the apostles of our Lord,” said Bishop-elect Sanchez. “I have loved my ministry as a parish priest in my first
three wonderful parishes and then as pastor of the people of St. Agatha in Sunset Park and Our Lady of Mount Carmel in Astoria.
Even when the people had limited financial resources, they were rich in faith and an inspiration to my life of faith. Moreover, as the
Territorial Vicar of Queens, I have been able to work closely with the pastors, priests and staff of our parishes. As I have walked on
this great pilgrimage as a priest, the depths of God’s love have been made very clearly manifest.” Bishop-elect Sanchez was named a
Prelate of Honor by Blessed John Paul II in 1997. He speaks English and Spanish.
As auxiliary bishops, they will join Auxiliary Bishop Frank Caggiano, Vicar General, and Auxiliary Bishop Octavio Cisneros, Vicar
for Hispanic Concerns and pastor of Holy Child Jesus, Richmond Hill, in assisting Bishop Nicholas DiMarzio to serve the
sacramental, spiritual and pastoral needs of the 1.4 million multi-cultural Catholics who reside in Brooklyn and Queens.
