Present & Plans
Germany:
q Due to the chosen solution of ETCS level 2, no impact on line performance
during migration from LZB.
q The feasibility to renew all necessary interlocking and the installation of the ETCS
system within the timeframe will be possible. It will take halve of the
engineering, construction and commissioning resources of the German
Railway available for CCS planning and building. Therefore it is an
ambitious yet realistic project.
q The time schedule for the implementation of ETCS Level 2 on the corridors is
determined by the ETCS migration plan in line with the financial resources.
q The realization of ETCS Level 2 on the high speed lines and secondly on the
conventional corridor A Rotterdam – Milan will have priority, hence the
other freight corridors are planned to be equipped with ETCS Level 2 not
before 2020.

Hungary:
q MÁV Rationale:
Ø Legacy from past 4 decades (basically no investment in new Information
Information and Communication
Technologies) need to be compensated very fast
Ø Hungary joining the European Union increased considerably the need
need to dramatically improve
on competitiveness for International Freight and Passenger (Tourism!)
(Tourism!) Traffic and to
equally improve on Commuter Traffic capacities and resources to offset the negative
impact of individual road traffic
Ø Increasing the current commercial speed on some sections to 160 km/h, mainly on the PanPanEuropean corridor sections
Ø The existing interlocking system (EVM) is obsolete, as trains may
may not be halted safely
before a dangerous point
Ø In some short block sections (<1300 m) the braking distance is longer than the
block
Ø Monitoring the correct operation of the level crossings at increased
increased commercial speed

Present & Plans
Hungary:
q Current European ERTMS Deployment (GSM-R, ETCS Level 2) and the
deployment by its neighbors and major business partners force MÁV to leapfrog
intermediate technologies and to move straight forward to deploy GSM-R and
ETCS L2 at a considerably accelerated pace
q Although being extremely successful, MÁV needs to convert ETCS Level 1
projects to ETCS Level 2
q Pilot Lines for GSM-R and ETCS L2 will concentrate primarily on the assessment
of the applicability of current national railway operation procedures than to test
technology.
q Define implementation priorities and reclassify railway network
q Assess financial resources and funds required for the accelerated introduction of
ERTMS
