southwest of Cortez, 4.2 miles west of
Hwy160/491 at 19891 Road G. We offer wines
made only from fruit grown in Colorado. The
winery Tasting Room is open every day from
noon to 5 p.m.
With straw bale and SIP construction we
built our 7,000-square-foot wine-making
facility to allow us to produce awardwinning and critically acclaimed wines for
your enjoyment. Pack a lunch and enjoy
the afternoon on the porch in our garden
courtyard with a glass or bottle of wine.

TAKE A GLIMPSE INTO AN
Mesa Verde National
Park offers a spectacular
look into the lives of
the Ancestral Pueblo
people who made it
their home for over 700
years. Spectacular cliff
dwellings and mesatop villages were built between 550 to 1300 A.D. Today, Mesa Verde
protects almost 5,000 known archaeological sites, including 600 cliff
dwellings. Visitors may walk, drive, or take a bus tour through the Park.
Hiking and climbing ladders in and out of cliff dwellings is one option,
or walks through less rigorous self-guided routes are also available.
The suggested visitation time for the Park is two days.
Ranger-guided cliff dwelling tours are available beginning in April
and continuing through October. Tickets for these tours are $4 and
can be purchased at the Colorado Welcome Center in Cortez and the
Visitor Research Center at the entrance to the Park. Tickets can only
be purchased up to two days in advance, so in order to get on the tour
of your choice, it is highly suggested that you purchase your tickets at
least one day in advance if possible.
ANCIENT CULTURE
The new Mesa Verde Visitor Research Center and Chapin Mesa
Archaeological Museum offer glimpses into the culture of Ancestral
Pueblo people. Rangers here will help plan your visit. After your hourlong drive into the Park, visit the Chapin Mesa Archaeological Museum.
Here, exhibits and dioramas trace the lives of the Ancestral Pueblo
people. Also available is a 25-minute Park video shown every half-hour,
and a museum store.
VISIT A CLIFF DWELLING COMMUNIT Y
Five cliff dwellings are open to the public. Cliff Palace, Balcony House,
and Long House can only be entered on a ranger-guided tour. Spruce
Tree House and Step House can be explored on your own.

Mesa Top Loop Road on Chapin Mesa is a six-mile drive that offers
amazing canyon views and a chance to learn about the Ancestral Pueblo
people’s occupation and architecture through time.

WETHERILL MESA
Less crowded than Chapin Mesa with only biking and hiking trails,
Wetherill Mesa offers a quiet setting to appreciate the archaeological
sites and scenery. Wetherill Mesa will be open May 1-October 31 or as
soon as weather and road conditions permit. Walk through the Badger
House Community to see early mesa-top sites. The Wetherill Mesa
Information Kiosk will be open on May 22 to September 7. Tours of
Long House will begin on May 22-September 7. Self-guided tours of
Step House, one of the only alcove sites that contains evidence of both
basketmaker and pueblo occupation, is also open during this time.

Attend an evening ranger program at Morefield Campground at mile 4.
SPECIAL BACKCOUNTR Y HIKES
Mesa Verde National Park is again offering a series of unique Special
Backcountry Hikes in 2015. Tickets for these special hikes are limited
and must be purchased online at www.recreation.gov.
These ranger-guided hikes and programs include a half-day hike
on Wetherill Mesa, a weekly two hour hike to Oak Tree House
during the summer, and a two hour hike to Square Tower House is
offered in the spring and fall. In addition, tickets for Twilight Tours
of Cliff Palace, which feature a historical figure from the past, and
the Photography Tour at Cliff Palace will be offered on-line at:
www.recreation.gov. Please check the website for more detailed
descriptions of each program.
WETHERILL MESA
HIKE AND BIKE ADVENTURE
Hikers and bicyclers, this is the trip for you! This ranger-guided, four and
a half-hour trek on the quieter side of Mesa Verde includes about five
miles of biking; four miles of hiking; expansive canyon views, spectacular
overlooks of remote cliff dwellings; and a tour of magnificent Long
House. A bicycle is required for this, so plan to bring your own bike or
you may be able to rent one upon arrival at the Wetherill Mesa parking
lot. Call 970-529-4465 to verify this before booking your ticket. With
a ranger, you’ll bike to several mesa-top archaeological sites, walk to
others, and hike about three miles round trip through the piñon-juniper
woodlands for cliff edge views of Nordenskiold #12 and Double House.
The tour concludes after the Long House Tour, and participants are free
to continue exploring Wetherill Mesa, or bike back to the parking lot
with the ranger. The adventure is offered Wednesdays and Sundays
from May 27-September 6, 2015. Tickets cost $18 for adults, or $15
for children or pass holders. Group size is limited to 15 people. For

OAK TREE HOUSE
This 60-room site built on two ledges is one of the largest cliff dwellings
in the Park. It is a well preserved but fragile site that features plastered
walls and varied architectural styles. The two hour, one mile roundtrip hike is moderately strenuous. Expect a narrow, unpaved, uneven
trail, with steps carved into the sandstone, steep drop-offs, and two
ladders (4-foot and 15-foot) and a total elevation change of 200 feet.
In addition to up close views of this site, you’ll have stunning views of
Cliff Canyon, Cliff Palace, and Sun Temple. The Oak Tree House Hike is
available from May 26-September 5, 2015, on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and
Saturdays. Tickets cost $25 per person, all ages. Group size is limited to
10 people per hike. For reservations or more information, visit: www.

SQUARE TOWER HOUSE
This stunning and surprisingly intimate cliff dwelling includes an
original kiva roof and the Crow’s Nest, both features that cannot be
seen from the viewpoint on the canyon rim. The strenuous two hour,
one mile round-trip hike follows an unpaved, uneven trail that descends
100-foot, and includes steep drop-offs, switchbacks, scrambling up
and down boulders, and climbing three ladders, the longest of which
is 20 feet. The Square Tower House Hike is offered on Saturdays and
Sundays from May 3-May 24, 2015 and on Thursdays and Sundays from
September 10-October 18, 2015. Tickets cost $25 per person, and
group size is limited to 10 people per hike. For reservations or more

TWILIGHT TOUR S OF CLIFF PALACE
Twilight Tours offer a historical perspective of Cliff Palace and Mesa
Verde National Park. Costumed interpreters introduce visitors to
famous characters from the past on this 90-minute tour. This is a unique
opportunity to learn about North America’s largest cliff dwelling
through the eyes of the people who found, stabilized, and preserved
it in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s. Twilight Tours are scheduled on
Sunday through Thursday evenings from May 24-September 6, 2015.
Tickets cost $12 per person and group size is limited to 20 people.

PHOTOGRAPHY TOUR IN CLIFF PALACE
Photographers, here is an opportunity to spend 90-minutes in Cliff
Palace with a Park Ranger in a small group setting. Dramatic sunset
lighting will appeal to both amateur and professional photographers
as well as those seeking a deeper connection with this extraordinary
archaeological treasure. The tours are offered on Friday and Saturday
evenings from May 22-September 5, 2015. Photographers must be
able to carry all gear while keeping both hands free to climb ladders.
Tickets cost $20 per person and group size is limited to 10 people.

If you’re visiting the Park November through April, there are still plenty
of options. Spruce Tree House is open year-round and a ranger is always
there to help you. Take a drive across the mesa top and view Cliff Palace
from afar. It’s still quite an amazing sight! The luminaria display, held
the second Thursday in December is an amazing experience as real
luminarias light the path to Spruce Tree House. w

ANASAZI HERITAGE CENTER
The Anasazi Heritage Center is a museum of the Ancestral Pueblo
(or Anasazi) culture and other native cultures in the Four Corners
region. It is also the starting point for visits to Canyons of the
Ancients National Monument. The museum displays the history and
the methods that modern archaeologists use to reveal the past, and
preserves artifacts and records from excavations in the Four Corners
area, one of the richest archaeological regions in the United States.
Many of the exhibits are hands-on and interactive: you can weave
on a loom, grind corn meal on a metate, examine the past through
microscopes, handle real artifacts, feel the finger indentations on
corrugated pottery, or carefully match tree rings to date an old
wooden beam.
CANYONS OF THE ANCIENTS
NATIONAL MONUMENT
The Canyons of the Ancients National Monument comprises 176,000
acres, and contains the highest known density of archaeological sites
in the United States. Archaeological and historic sites, such as cliff
dwellings, great kivas, and rock art sites enrich the landscape.
The canyons are accessible from various points along the Trail of the
Ancients National Scenic Byway. Cortez, Dove Creek, Cahone, Pleasant
View, and Yellow Jacket are all access points in Colorado. Bluff,
Blanding, Montezuma Creek and Aneth are access points in Utah.
The current exhibit in the Special Exhibit Gallery is entitled, Ancestral
Homelands: Connection to Land, Space, and Time. This is a juried
exhibition showcasing contemporary art of the Institute of American
Indian Arts Community running through November 15, 2015.
Most roads in the Monument are primitive, unpaved, four-wheel drive
routes. Motorized travel is restricted to existing roads only. Mountain
bikes are allowed only on trails designated for their use. There are no
campgrounds, but primitive camping is allowed in most areas.

Beautiful Pass holders are free.
Archaeological sites in this “outdoor museum” are not apparent to
the untrained eye, and precise locations are not publicized. Visitors
who are planning to explore the Monument should stop at the
Anasazi Heritage Center for maps and current conditions. Do not dig
in the sites! It is illegal to remove artifacts. For more information, visit

captioned audio visuals, public restrooms and bus parking.

exposed walls. Sand Canyon Pueblo is adjacent to the upper (north)
trailhead for Sand Canyon. There is a small parking area, but no water,
restroom, phone or wheelchair-access.
CROW CANYON
ARCHAEOLOGICAL CENTER
Is a 170 acre research center and living classroom, offers hands-on
archaeology programs as well as small group tours of the Southwest
led by archaeologists and American Indian scholars.
LOWR Y PUEBLO
The only developed recreation site within the Monument. It has
standing walls that have been stabilized, 40 rooms, eight kivas and
a Great Kiva. The picnic area, restroom and trail are all wheelchairaccessible. There is no water or phone service.
PAINTED HAND PUEBLO
This is a beautiful standing tower perched on a boulder. The site has
never been excavated, but stone rubble shows where rooms were
built against the cliff-face and on boulders.
SAND CANYON TRAIL
This is a wonderful system of three trails ranging from easy to
challenging skill levels, wonderful for hiking and singletrack
mountain biking. It leads to one of the largest prehistoric settlements

Be an archaeologist on a day tour! Visit a current excavation site,
tour a working archaeology lab, and explore the fascinating history
of the ancestral Pueblo Indians. A full day adventure in learning!
Tour is offered every Wednesday and Thursday, May-September.

Crow Canyon also offers free one hour campus tours every Wednesday,
Thursday, and Friday at 10am Late May through mid October.
THE UTE MOUNTAIN TRIBAL PARK
Offers an in-depth experience not to be missed. Tribal members
interpret tribal culture, pictographs, cliff dwellings, surface ruins and
artifacts. The Ute Mountain Tribal Park is in the Mesa Verde/Mancos
Canyon area just outside the boundaries of the National Park.

Remember to bring plenty of drinking water, food, insect repellant,
sunscreen, a hat and sturdy hiking shoes. A full day tour involves
about 80 miles of driving on dirt roads. w

SLEEP ING UTE LEGEND
The Sleeping Ute Mountain towers over Towaoc
and the Montezuma Valley.
Legend has it that this is a Great Warrior God who
had come to fight against evil ones causing much
trouble. A great battle ensued, and the Warrior God
was hurt, so he laid down and fell into a deep sleep.
Look carefully at the mountain and you will see
him; his head points toward the north, his arms are folded across
his chest; his stomach, legs, knees, feet (even toes) are all clearly
visible. When fog or clouds settle over the sleeping Warrior God,
it is a sign that he is changing his blankets for the season. A light
green blanket heralds spring; the dark green brings summer.
Yellow and red are fall colors, and white is winter. One day the Utes
believe the great warrior God will rise again to help his people
fight against their enemies.
The 13 Ute Bands are the oldest residents of Colorado, and
historically roamed throughout Colorado, Utah, and New Mexico
as hunter-gatherer societies. The separate bands moved with
the seasons for the best hunting and harvest. The present day
Weenuche Band live in the communities of Towaoc and White
Mesa to the west in Utah. This thriving band celebrates the Bear
Dance and Sun Dance every year, which connect old ways with the
new in rich colorful pageantry of song and dance. The Bear Dance
celebrations are open to the public. Visit www.utemountain.org for

Some must-see Ute Tribal experiences include the archaeological
tribal park located south of the Mesa Verde/Mancos Canyon,
as well as the retail trading company, located in Cortez. Watch
artists at work creating beautiful pottery. Tour the museum
depicting Ute history and artifacts. Shop beautiful handcrafted
beadwork, jewelry, baskets, hide paintings, and pottery. Sample
local wines from McElmo Canyon at an adjacent tasting room.

BIKING
From singletrack to challenging hill climbs in the
San Juan Mountains, Mesa Verde Country offers
over 600 miles of mountain biking trails in the
county, from canyon, slick rock, piñon and juniper
to an old growth forest. If you’re looking to beat
the crowds and enjoy quiet trails and scenic
byways, Mesa Verde Country is your breath of
fresh air.
A fun fact about Southwest Colorado: of the 6,584
square miles of beautiful countryside, only 38% is
privately owned, 17% of that area is Tribal Land,
and a whopping 45% is public. Spring, summer
and fall are best times to ride, but mid-winter
fat biking is popular, and more trips are possible in the canyons,
making Mesa Verde Country your year-round mountain biking
destination. The higher elevations of the mesas and mountain trails
offer incredible views, as well as respite from mid-summer heat.
Mountain biking in Mesa Verde Country is also gaining international
recognition! Sand Canyon Trail in Canyons of the Ancients National
Monument might be the only place in the world where you can ride
singletrack past so many ancient cliff dwellings. Phil’s World - just
six miles from Cortez, starting across from the Montezuma County
Fairgrounds and Racetrack - is another one-of-a-kind destination.
With fast, rolling terrain that includes both intermediate and

Phil’s World has just about 60 miles of trails, thanks to a recent
expansion by the Kokopelli Bike Club. It’s also home to the annual
12 Hours of Mesa Verde mountain bike race, which attracts loads
of single speed and endurance riders - some of the sport’s finest!
Road cyclists and motorcyclists can take advantage of the two
national scenic byways: Trail of the Ancients National Scenic
Byway (the only one in North America dedicated to archaeology)
and the San Juan Skyway “America’s Most Beautiful Drive.” Bicycle
rentals, equipment, and repair are also readily available in the
area. Additional information on bicycle routes is available at the
San Juan Ranger District in Dolores and retail outlets throughout
the area. Current bike trail maps from Big Loop Maps can be found
in Cortez at Kokopelli Bike and Board, as well as the Lizard Head
Cyclery in Dolores.

Mesa Verde Country is a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts! Our
geographic diversity of mountains, mesas, and canyons provides
the perfect environment for recreational activities year-round.
Hiking in Mesa Verde Country can take you into the San Juan National
Forest, north of Dolores, with spectacular views and intermediate
trails. Priest Gulch Trails and Calico Trails offer challenging terrain
that is well worth the effort. Visit the Dolores Public Lands Office
on Highway 184 for more information.
If you’re near Mancos, the Big Al and West
Mancos Trail is easy, and right off the Transfer
Campground, just past the scenic pull-out on CR
42. Interpretive signs along the way point out
flora and fauna, and there are benches making
this an ideal hiking venue for small children.

In Cortez, Hawkins Preserve is a 122 acre site with
beautiful views of the Sleeping Ute Mountain, La
Plata Mountains and the mesa. There is a paved
trail that for those with limited mobility as well as
a number of unpaved ones. There is also a small
protected ruin and interesting natural vegetation.

Carpenter Natural Area – also located within
Cortez city limits, the paved trail can be accessed
from two locations. On the East side, it begins as
the sidewalk on the northwest corner of Mildred
Road and Empire Street and heads north. On the West end, the trail
may be accessed on Lebanon Road north of Highway 491. This great
open space offers opportunities for hiking, biking, rollerblading, nature
watching, native plant identification or whatever else the imagination
may allow. The main one and a half mile trail is paved. There are also
many dirt paths that veer off into the hills. These are perfect for the

The Ancestral Puebloans farmed the valleys and mesas of Southwest
Colorado, including current-day Mesa Verde National Park until around
1300 AD. Growing primarily corn, beans, and squash, they laid the

Located just eight miles from the entrance to Mesa Verde National
Park, Cortez features over 600 acres of parks, trails and open space. To
the North, you’ll find Carpenter Natural Area with 176 acres and easy
access to trails for biking and hiking. To the South, enjoy the 122 acre
Hawkins Preserve with opportunity for hiking, biking, rock climbing and
star-gazing from the slick rock trails to the canyon edge, overlooking
McElmo Creek. There are even excavated archaeological sites contained
within the preserve, which is owned by the Cortez Cultural Center.

At the heart of it all you’ll find beautiful Parque de Vida with
ponds for fishing and feeding ducks, as miles of sidewalks wind
through the park systems and bring this community together
with outdoor amphitheaters for summer festivals. The Rec Center
has something for every age group with pools, a climbing wall,
racquetball courts, indoor basketball courts and fitness area. A 50
meter outdoor pool with a 125 foot double loop water slide, a
splash pad with spraying jets and play features including a 60
gallon dumping bucket. All of these amenities are just one block
north of Main Street near the Colorado Welcome Center where
you can also purchase your tickets for ranger-guided tours at
Mesa Verde.
The ideal jumping-off point for many adventures, Cortez has
a wide variety of lodging, shopping and dining opportunities
including local breweries and wineries. A weekly Farmer’s
Market features the agricultural heritage and commitment to
local, organic foods which are featured at many restaurants in
the region. Several exceptional galleries, museums and trading
posts reflect the culture and creativity of the Southwest.
Cortez remains the trading center of the Four Corners as it has
for over 2,000 years with artistry passed down through generations to

“Rio de Nuestra Senora de las Dolores” or The River of
Our Lady of Sorrows, was named by Dominquez and
Escalante, Spanish Catholic priests who came through the
area seeking routes from the missions of Santa Fe, NM to
California in 1776. In 1891, the railhead was established
at the present site of Dolores, and became a major stop
on the rail line between Ridgway, Telluride and Durango.
A half rail car on the Rio Grande Southern Railroad,
nicknamed the Galloping Goose, ran the mail and
passenger routes and it lives on today at the Railroad
Museum in Flanders Park.
Walk or float from Riverside Park to the east all the way
to Joe Rowell Park to the west with access all along the
public trail for some of the best fly fishing waters in
Southwest Colorado. Dolores is your headquarters for
local history and outdoor fun, with fascinating shops
and boutiques, excellent restaurants including a local
brewery, and river front and in-town lodging options to
