INTRODUCTION
Welcome to the Hazara Gallery Auction.
For the past 45 years I have been collecting and selling high-quality oriental rugs and
textiles, most of which have been old or antique. For three decades Hazara Gallery,
located in the Rockridge district of Oakland, California, has catered to discriminating
collectors, decorators, national and international dealers, as well as local clientele
who are looking for exceptional pieces with which to furnish their homes and offices.
Unfortunately, there are no local auction houses to provide exclusively for those
seeking rug and textile opportunities. Therefore, I have decided to attempt to fill
this need by creating a single-focused auction venue. Our very first auction will
offer some of the finest examples of antique and old woven art available, either in
Northern California or anywhere else. It will also include pieces from local collectors
who desired to assist by adding a few of their own treasures to help us enlarge the
representation of items, and to ensure that all areas of tribal and city rug production
would be on offer.
At this point I wish to thank my many long-term friends and customers for their
enthusiastic support and participation. I especially would like to acknowledge the
labor-intensive work carried out by my son, Baback, who worked many hours to
ensure that this catalog was completed scrupulously and in a timely fashion. Without
his efforts the catalog simply could not have been produced as you see it.
Please feel free to call me if you have any questions or concerns regarding this auction.

Senneh was an important
regional center and the
provincial capital of Persian
Kurdistan in the early 19th
century, during the reign of
Fath Ali Shah. Influenced by
the sophisticated embroidered
and woven textiles of the Qajar
period, rather than by local or
tribal traditions, Senneh kilims
are a small and rare group of
weavings that are known for
their exceptionally fine slittapestry weave, and for using
wefts that are not perpendicular
to the warps, but are curved to
give the design a more rounded
effect in areas.

Reza Shah Pahlavi, original name Reza Khan (born March 16, 1878
Alasht, Mazandaran province, Iran—died July 26, 1944) was an
Iranian army officer who rose through army ranks to become Shah
of Iran (1925 – 41) and who began the regeneration of his country.
Under Reza Shah’s 16 years’ rule the roads and Trans-Iranian
Railway were built, modern education was introduced and the
University of Tehran was established, and the systematic dispatch
of Iranian students to Europe was started. Industrialization of the
country was stepped up, and the achievements were great. Living
conditions for most Iranians improved dramatically. By the mid1930s Reza Shah’s dictatorial style of rule caused dissatisfaction. And
in 1935 the country’s name changed from Persia to Iran.
