Rose Lynnʼs Emporium, a
quaint little shop that opened in
October of last year, is located
at 114 1/2 West Main Street in
Sherman, NY. Local artistʼs works
and crafts are promoted, along with
collectables, vintage items and jewelry. Owner Edie Wall designs and
crafts her own beaded jewelry and
is a photographer who uses nature,
garden tours and her extensive
flower gardens as subjects for her
work. Her sister Deb Sandersʼ decorative painting on furniture, signs,
ladders for the garden, and most
any paintable surface is also presented in the shop. Unique windows
and glass flowers crafted from col-
7
lected glassware are collaborated
efforts of the two women. The shop
also presents works of other local
photographers, weavers, quilters,
stained glass artists, and painters.
Rose Lynnʼs is open Tuesday thru
Saturday from 9 to 5 and Sundays
in the summer from 10 to 2. Stop in
and browse, you just never know
what youʼll find. “There is too much

you will find a farm-like environment

Double D.A.B. Riding Stable were
born and raised at the stable, and
all of them were trained here. Double D.A.B. Riding Stable offers
many activities centered on the
horses. The stable gives guided trail
rides, pony rides, riding lessons,

Phoenix Palace may be the
new Chinese restaurant in
Lakewood, but the man behind
the wok is a familiar face. Edison
Yeung, Phoenix Palace owner,
opened the doors last year to his
new restaurant, but had cooked at
the same location before when it
was known as Kylin Express.
Yeung, who partnered with his
brother, closed down Kylin Express
a few years ago because his brother wanted out of the business. So,
Yeung took another job in the area
cooking Chinese food while their old
restaurant went under new ownership and was known as China King.
However, Yeung had a following of
loyal customers who wanted him
back preparing cuisine along Chautauqua Avenue. ''People would tell
me I should come back,'' he said.
''That was a surprise. I felt happy
the way people were supporting

me.'' The uproar of support for how
Yeung prepared Chinese food was
coming, coincidentally, at the same
time Yeung was thinking about
leaving the area. But because of
the support, he decided to take a
chance and stake his own claim as
owner of a restaurant. ''I wouldn't
be here right now if it wasn't for my
customers' support,'' he said. ''That
is why I came back to open my
own restaurant by myself.'' The
restaurateur said the support has
been overwhelming. ''It made me
feel like I was in my hometown.
Now here feels like home,'' he said.
''I want people to know I will do my
best. I really thank my Lakewood
and Jamestown customers.'' Yeung
said he has been cooking for over
10 years and has always had a
passion for cooking since he was
young. ''Yeah, I really like it,'' he
said. ''I do everything myself. I'm
the cook and manager.'' The
restaurant, located at 112 Chautauqua Ave in Lakewood, is open

The Chautauqua Craft
Alliance was founded in
1982 by a group of studio
crafts artists in Chautauqua County
with the goal of developing opportunities for Craft Artists to show and
sell their work. Ten years later the
President of the United States designated 1993 as the Year of Ameri-
15
can Craft. Today, The Craft Shows
at Chautauqua held every July and
August around the perimeter of
Bestor Plaza at Chautauqua Institution are nationally recognized as
two of the finest juried craft shows
in the country. Potters, jewelers,
fiber artists, glass blowers, woodworkers and other craft media
artists from all over the United
States compete for a slot. Each
year the Alliance hires three qualified jurors with diverse and extensive experience in the world of art
and crafts to choose the best of the
best. This yearʼs jurors: Judith
Olson Gregory, Gerald Mead and
Marc Levine are no exception. With
studios in New York and North Carolina, award-winning mixed media
artist, Judith Olson Gregory has
enjoyed nearly thirty years of exhibition, teaching and arts advocacy
experience. Her career has included residency fellowships at the
esteemed Yaddo artists' colony in
Saratoga Springs, New York. Judith
received the University of
Rochester's prestigious Lillian
Fairchild Award and was one of six
artists chosen for Rochester Memorial Art Gallery's First Biennial Invitational Exhibit. Award-winning
visual artist Gerald Mead is an independent curator, collector, art writer,
and educator. Mead's artwork is in
the collections of the Albright-Knox
Art Gallery and the International
Museum of Photography and Film.
He holds and MFA in visual studies
from the University at Buffalo, a BS

He has shown his small-scale collages/assemblages in museums
and galleries throughout the US and
Europe. Mead is the recipient of
many awards and grants from the
New York Foundation for the Arts
and the New York State Council on
the Arts. Trained as a sculptor and
silversmith at the School of the
Museum of Fine Arts in Boston,
award-winning artist Marc Levine
has gained much critical acclaim in
the craft world. His work has been
exhibited at the American Crafts
Museum in New York, the Smithsonian Institution in Washington,

Her next move was to Burlington,

own career. She then went back to
school. She enrolled in The School
of the Art Institute of Chicago,
where she had the opportunity to
explore other materials and began
incorporating metal and wood into
her clay sculptures. She graduated
with a masterʼs in ceramics in 1990.

the form. She stains the surfaces of
each piece and then rubs it away to
reveal a fossilized look. After glazing and firing, she assembles the

Blessed with gentle hills and scenic

eagles and heron are often seen.
The signature hole is number 3. A

Double D.A.B. Riding
Stable Darlene Breads
and Douglas Bowen
founded Double D.A.B. Riding Stable in 1982. The stable was created, and continues to operate, based
on a passion for horses and love of
nature. The stable is still owned and
operated by Darlene and Douglas,
as well as their daughter, Chelsey.
At the stable, you will find a farmlike environment with a menagerie
of animals including horses, donkeys, goats, llamas, dogs, cats,
geese, and even a pot-bellied pig.
Most of the horses at Double D.A.B.
Riding Stable were born and raised
at the stable, and all of them were
trained here.
Double D.A.B. Riding Stable
offers many activities centered on
the horses. The stable gives
20
guided trail rides, pony rides, riding lessons, summer day camps,
and a petting farm. The scenic trail
rides are the most popular attraction. Guides take customers on
horseback rides through miles of
scenic, wooded trails. The beautiful trails include streams, gently
rolling hills, fields of wildflowers,
and a chance to see some local
wildlife. The rides are geared
towards people looking to spend
some leisurely time on horseback
and with nature. No experience is
necessary, as the well-trained
horses and knowledgeable guides
will take care of the horseback riders. For some great pictures and

A third generation of the
Pullan family is active in
the day-to-day operations of the locally owned and
operated Jamestown Mattress
Company, a business with roots in
the community dating back to 1886.
Jim and Louise Pullan purchased
the W I Blystone Company on
Blackstone Avenue in 1981, changing its name to Jamestown Mattress. Jim Pullan, a Jamestown
native, already knew the bedding
industry from his experience serving
25
as Vice President of Niagara Therapy. His newly formed company
supplied bedding to Niagara Therapy, thus getting the business it
needed to help it get started. The
Pullan sons, Bruce, Steve and Jim,
continue to be very active in the
day-to-day operations of the business. When the company started
out it had three employees. Today
38 people work for the company.
Jamestown Mattress produces its
own line of mattresses and box
springs. These products are sold
out of our retail stores and are also
private labeled for many other furniture and bedding retail companies.
Annual sales for Jamestown Mattress exceed $5 million. Much of its
success it attributed to its expanding retail market. Recently aquiring
locations in Rochester and Batavia.

FUN THINGS TO DO
fond and familiar to places such as
these. In 1927, Ford Cadwell began
making his full cream dairy cheese
in a small block building on the family farm. The vat that once held 400
gallons of milk still sits in the shop.
About ten 30 pound wheels of
cheese were produced daily until
1947. Milk from the night milking
and the next morning came from
about 135 head of Holstein cows.
Because Chautauqua County winters can be harsh, the factory could
operate only seasonally. The cattle
would be “dried off” then by spring
they would bear calves and milking
and cheese making would start up
again. The barn behind the factory
is a remarkable 174 feet long and
today sports a snappy red metal
roof. The first section of the barn is
believed to been built in the 1850ʼs.
Ford Cadwellʼs cheese making craft
went back to his grandparents. His
motherʼs father had his factory in
Maple Springs. The paternal grandfather made his cheese in
Dewittville. Unfortunately, by the
time 22-year-old Ford Cadwell
began his craft, he said that they
had “taken the recipes with them!”
Because most small villages in the
county had a cheese factory, he
learned much from visiting them.
2012 becomes the 85th season for
The Cheese House. Recently a
customer introduced her granddaughter as the fifth generation.
She had come to the factory as a
child with her grandmother. Fond
memories are expressed by customers who as young boys would

recall grabbing a hand full of fresh
cheese curd from the vat, which
now appears much smaller than as
they remember. Among the many
thousand customers who have
come to buy cheese have been
Mrs. Thomas Edison. She was the
also the daughter of Lewis Miller,
co-founder of Chautauqua Institution. In more recent years, Brad
Anderson, creator of Marmaduke
and Mark Russell, political satirist.
Russell once noted “the cheese is
absolutely marvelous, I assume
Velveeta is banned in Dewittville.”
Today Cadwellʼs Cheese House is
owned and operated by Jane Currie, Fordʼs stepdaughter. There are
now over 30 kinds of cheese to
sample as well as cheese curd.
Local products available are maple
syrup and honey, a line of confections and nuts from The Basket
Company, seasoning salts, chutney
and a Bloody Mary mix from Borsari. Amish jams and relishes are a
special treat. The gift shop is also

Jammers Built in 1941,
Russell E. Diethrick, Jr.
Park is the second oldest
ballpark in the NY-Penn League.
The stadium is owned by the City of
Jamestown with the Jammers leas-

ing it as the primary tenant. It was
originally known as Jamestown
Municipal Stadium and hosted the
Jamestown Falcons of the "Pennsylvania-Ontario-New York League"
(PONY League), which is now
known as the NY-Penn League. The
park was later unofficially known as
College Stadium after Jamestown
Community College relocated its
campus right behind the park on
Falconer Street in 1961. On August
9, 1997, the park was renamed
Russell E. Diethrick, Jr. Park in
honor of Jamestown's "Mr. Baseball." It was dedicated to Mr.
Diethrick, who has been player,
manager, owner, supporter and
friend of professional and youth
baseball in Jamestown longer than
most can remember. Russ is currently the Community Development
Officer for Jamestown Savings

Communicating With
The World Of Spirit Date: August 18, 2012,
2:00 pm - 5:00 pm - Presenter: Ray
Buckland, Venue: Auditorium - The
discovery by the Fox Sisters that it
is possible to have a two-way “conversation” with the dead led to
todayʼs general acceptance of spirit
communication, as demonstrated
every day at Lily Dale and similar
Spiritualist communities. There are
many ways to make contact and to
keep contact with your departed
loved ones. In this workshop you
will connect with your personal Spirit Guide and learn how that guide
can bring you together with those
who have passed on to the Spirit
World. You will learn what goes on
at a typical seance and how a group
seance differs from a one-on-one

reading with a medium. You will
learn of trumpets, apports, levitation, materializations, and more.
The Spiritualist movement has led
to such off-shoots as the proliferation of “ghost hunters” found today,
the popularity of psychic fairs, and a
variety of television personalities
who claim to “talk to the dead”.
Learn how these things are possible
at this fascinating workshop.(See

The Hotel Lenhart is
located in Bemus Point,
New York, facing west
overlooking beautiful Bemus Bay on
Chautauqua Lake. It has been
owned and operated by the same
family since 1880. The original
Lenhart was built by Dr. J. J.
Lenhart and his wife, the former
Dora Baldwin. We are now in the
fourth generation of family ownership. The hotel has a main floor and
three upper sleeping floors. We
have a total of 53 rooms ranging
from large parlor type rooms on the
ground floor to small single bedded
rooms on the top floor. The hotel
was originally built without plumbing
or electric and some rooms still do
not have a bathroom, all rooms
have a sink. There are two private
baths on each floor for those rooms.
We operate during our regular season, Memorial Day to Labor Day,
and our rates include a full breakfast. Our dining room seats 125
people and is available for special
parties. The cocktail lounge, The
Lamplighter Room, is located just
off the lobby. The music is usually
