Regular checkups can teach us how to stay healthy; they can even save our lives. How often should you have regular check-ups? That depends on several things, but in general, Doctors say that if we are in good health, it depends on our age. An Adult under 50 should have a thorough medical exam at least once every 2-3 years. From 50 to 60, every 2 years, and over 60, a yearly check-up is best. During regular checkups, our Doctor takes our family history and performs routine tests, such as checking blood pressure, heart rate, and cholesterol. The Doctor may also recommend other tests if we are at risk for things like heart disease, stroke or cancer. These tests can help identify problems and possibly stop bad events from happening. Having regular health check-ups will detect any medical complaints before getting too worse which in turn helps to incur less expenses related to our health problems. This way your bnl Healthcare Plan Premiums will say healthy too. Unfortunately a good education costs money and what makes matters worse is that it costs more money every year. Education costs have risen at a much higher rate than normal inflation. Figures from the US show that tuition costs have risen by 2.5 times the normal inflation rate. As an example if the cost of college tuition was $10,000 in 1986 it would cost over $21,500 now. One way of easing the burden is to fund in advance by saving money before you have to pay the education bills. There are many ways to save but one of the best ways is by a Future Education Plan which not only enables you to save but also ensures that if the main earner in a family were to die then the education costs would be covered by a capital sum payable on death. The key message is to plan ahead with your savings and to ensure you have life insurance. bnl has several Plans that can help you achieve your goals. Call us now before it’s too late. bnl Café Update Grapefruit and Interaction with Medicines The best way to stay healthy during these sudden and dramatic changes in the weather is for us to eat a balanced diet and to try to maintain a healthy lifestyle – eg start off. your day with some fresh fruit juice, the foods and drinks you consume should be fresh, rich in vitamin C. We spend a lot of our time at work and to help us stay healthy preparing a thermos with a mixture of ginger, rosehip, linden and chamomile tea will not only help support our health but also ensure we drink enough liquids. Water is a shield that works to protect our bodies from illness and disease and keeps our defense system strong – we should drink 2-3 litres of water per day. Millions of people taking medicines for high cholesterol, cancer and to prevent heart attacks are at risk of potentially life threatening side effects if they eat grapefruits, Doctors have warned. A study has listed 43 major drugs which are affected by eating grapefruits or drinking the juice and experts have warned there needs to be more awareness of the risks. Having grapefruit can cause some medicines to enter the body faster which makes it more likely to have side effects from the medicine. Interactions can happen up to 3 days after eating or drinking grapefruit. This means a person cannot drink grapefruit juice in the morning and take medications later in the day to stop possible medicine interactions (a medicine interaction is when a medicine or food changes how another medicine works). An interaction can occur even if you eat or drink a small amount of grapefruit. However, if you like grapefruit and want to continue to enjoy it, ask your Doctor if there is a different medicine for you that doesn’t interact with grapefruit. Only some medicines interact with grapefruit – for examples: certain cholesterol-lowering statin drugs, such as Zocor (simvastatin), Lipitor (atorvastatin) and Pravachol (pravastatin); some blood pressure-lowering drugs, such as nifedipine (Nifediac and Afeditab); organ transplant rejection drugs, such as cyclosporine (Sandimmune and Neoral); certain cardiovascular drugs, such as amiodarone (Cordarone and Nexterone), clopidogrel and apixaban. . . Getting 7-8 hours of sleep each day will make us strong as our body gets a chance to rest and gathers energy and repairs itself in general. It is also important to remember that where we sleep is also very important – if the bedroom is too hot, too cold, damp, dusty or not well-aired will ruin the chances of a good night’s sleep and our immune system could be weakened. Ensuring your bedroom gets fresh air for at least an hour every day and having a warm shower in the morning and the evening will speed up circulation and make you feel fresh. Early Death by Prolonged Sitting How the Change in Weather Affects Our Health The human body needs to stay within a certain temperature range (between 36.5-37 degrees Celsius) in order to stay healthy. But when outside influences such weather conditions change suddenly, the body’s own regulation mechanisms can be caught unaware, thus triggering changes in the body’s temperature. As the immune system works in concert with these regulatory systems, it too is affected. Sunshine during the day, rain in the evening, morning breezes, night-time storms. It is constantly fluctuating, and the changing temperatures throughout the day are making many of us ill. A recent study found that sitting 6 or more hours a day increased the risk of early death from all causes by an average 35% for women and 18% for men — even if you exercise! Researchers compared a large group of long-time sitters to people who sat less than 3 hours a day and controlled for factors like smoking. The results are compelling: women who sat more than 6 hours a day faced a 33% higher risk of early death from cardiovascular disease compared with women who sat fewer than 3 hours a day. Long-sitting men had an 18% increased risk of premature death from heart disease. There was a 30% higher risk of early death in women who sat the longest compared with women who sat the least. 5
