Trees are one of God’s truly beautiful creations. They start off as a small seed, but grow large enough to provide cool shade on hot summer days. Some can grow large enough to break concrete or lift houses off their foundations. This reminds me of one of my favorite exhibits in the nature center of Highlands, North Carolina. The cross section of a very large and ancient tree is on display there. The rings of the tree date all the way back to before Columbus first set foot on American soil. Each ring varies by thickness based on the climate and rainfall the tree experienced at the time. Some years were lean, therefore the rings are thin. Other years of great abundance created rings that are thick and full. Trees are a lot like life. We all experience years that are abundant and others that are lean. The Florida Yacht Club has endured much since its founding in 1876. Our Club, like a tree, contains a history tested by time and a willingness to adapt to change. While the last few years have been full of challenges, I believe we are ready to once again experience great abundance and new growth. Membership has stabilized and is now trending in the right direction. Associate, Non-Resident and Near-Non Membership are all hitting new highs. We are welcoming new members and we are welcoming back past members returning from time away. All of our sports programs are seeing fantastic growth and vigor. Our sailing team’s recent success in the New York Invitational Qualifiers in Newport, Rhode Island added new prestige to our national sailing reputation and showed some of the best sailors in the world that FYC was there to win. Our Tennis and Fitness are seeing participation levels not seen in years. I encourage you to read the columns in this Newswaves for more details on each of these programs. We’ve had one of the best summers that I can remember. The Club had bigger, better and more innovative programs than in recent memory. The Summer Camp participation was the best in many years, Flag Officers and Board of Governors with members taking advantage of the new 5 day format for tennis, sailing, and swimming instruction. The power boat program was heavily attended and the line of kids fishing on the docks on Sunday afternoons is terrific to see. I want to personally thank the many members and staff who worked long hours to make it all work. General Manager Darren Betz has added new energy and innovative ideas, and is working hard each day to propel our Club forward. Looking forward, the Board is working to provide superior value for our members and has already conducted three strategic planning sessions. We continue to set goals defined by the Membership Survey that you completed in 2011. Most goals have already been accomplished. Improved food service, operations efficiency, improvement of the grounds and buildings and increased committee involvement have all made the Club experience much more enjoyable. One step along the way is our effort to go paperless in our Board meetings. The initiative will save thousands of pages of paper each year and cut down on the labor it takes for meeting preparation. We continue supporting projects designed to honor the architectural integrity that Mr. Kenyon Drake designed in our beautiful clubhouse. We plan to continue painting, repairing signs of age and removing visible wires on the clubhouse. We have numerous initiatives underway led by members and staff all focused on making FYC the best yacht club in America. With Fall returning once again, our attention turns to football, especially college football, homework, the approach of the Holiday Season, great club activities and the joy of cooler weather. Please remember your Club is here for you. Be sure to check the Newswaves and the website for a list of all activities and celebrations scheduled at the Club. Enjoy the experience, bring friends to dinner, especially at our 1876 Steakhouse, and celebrate the wonderful lady we call The Florida Yacht Club. Peters Fleet est.1876 F est.1876 The Florida Yacht Club St. Johns River | Jacksonville, Florida Four of our FYC Youth Sailing Team Members traveled to Sarasota 5210Day Yacht Club Road Jacksonville, FL the 32210 for the 66th Annual Labor Regatta this |year. Although fearless foursome did not bring home any hardware this time, they learned a lot and had a boat-load of fun! This was not the biggest regatta for Reedy Monahan, but it was for Bridget Monahan, Wes Myler and Lizzie Grich who were racing in the more competitive Red, White and Blue Fleet for the first time against 72 competitors! On the 1st of September, we conducted the “Get Hooked” FYC Kid’s Fishing Tournament and I want to give props to William Cook who finished the tournament winning “Biggest Fish”, “Ugliest Fish”, “Weirdest Fish”, and “Last Fish”; Palmer Dunn who won “Smallest Fish” and “Prettiest Fish”; FYC Guestest.1876 John Wright Stanley won “First Fish” and “Most Fish”; Hallie Raye Nelson won “Biggest with Dad Assist”; Collin Poe won “Most Dedicated The won Florida Club Fisherman” and Ethan Brockman “MostYacht Enthusiastic Amateur Fisherman”. 5210 Yacht Club Road | Jacksonville, FL 32210 F I want to publicly thank our much appreciated member volunteers. Thank you to Ira Sonn for his assistance with installing additional cleats along A dock and Pat Bryan for re-securing all of the loose boards on the docks in the cove. Also, thanks to Steve Fry for supervising the cove dock project. These members have given their time and, in some cases, materials to assist our Fleet Department with routine maintenance and much needed repair and enhancement projects. See you on the docks, Steve Crowder Fleet Director (904) 403-2480 “Get Hooked” FYC Kid’s Fishing Tourney F All of us at The Florida Yacht Club want to thank J/Boats for bringing the exciting J70 to our Club for all of us to experience a demo sail. Over 50 members and guests took part in the demo sails over a weekend in mid-August. I was one of the last to sail on Saturday and that boat made for an exciting yet extremely stable sailing experience. All of those that experienced the J70 would certainly agree. Thanks again J/Boats. I am happy to announce that we reached our fundraising goal of $18,000 during the last two weeks of August. Thanks to all who contributed to our campaign, including those that bid on silent auction items or purchased team gear and raffle tickets. Summer usually ends on Labor Day in most parts of the USA but not for our fleet of sailors and cruisers at The Florida Yacht Club. On October 6th, we will host the Crab Trap Regatta here on the St. Johns River. Just after the PHRF boats get going, we will start the J24s from Fleet 55. They will be sailing for honors in the Boat of the Year (BOTY) #1 race. These BOTY’s are a highly contested race series that starts in April with Wednesday Night Racing and continues through to the BOTY #2 and North American Championship held here in November. One boat has won this race series eight out of the last ten years. Is it time for an upset? Our cruisers are not to be outdone by the sailors. On October 20th, we will celebrate the Second Annual Driftwood Landing Small Boat Cruise at Bob Gay’s property on the Ortega River. This cruise will feature an oyster roast and chili with all of the fixings. Adult beverages are B.Y.O.B. Come out by car or enjoy a cruise on your boat. Bring along all of the kids for a fun day of fishing on the river and shucking oysters. In November, we will see more action for the J24s of Fleet 55. On the 3rd, they will sail in the BOTY #2 Regatta on the St. Johns. All of this is a prelude to one of the biggest events of this year or any other year. The Merrill Lynch/Bank of America J24 North American Championship and Kings Day Regatta will be celebrated from the 14th through the 18th of November. Get out your shucking knives and gloves because there is a famous oyster roast on Wednesday night, November 14th. Regatta Chairman, Tim Monahan, wants to let everyone know that we still need tons of volunteers for this event. Please call him at (904) 703-7188 to match up your talents and the needs for the regatta. Thanks for your help. See you on the River, A. Lynn Ellis, Fleet Captain Upcoming Fleet Events... Yes, the Florida/Georgia weekend is a deep-rooted tradition here in town and an event that you don’t want to miss. On Friday evening before the game, we are having the “Ultimate Tailgating Buffet” in the Pirate’s Den. I personally love the tailgating experience, but most of all, I love the food. We will be featuring all of the favorites and what I like to chow down on in the parking lot before any football game. Be sure to check out the Pirate’s Den Bar where drinks will be flowin’ at college pricing. You can’t beat that! Whether you’re a Gator or a Bulldog, show your colors and join us at the Club. We didn’t forget about celebrating Oktoberfest. Throughout the first week of the month, I will be creating rustic and hearty dishes to please your appetite and our guests in the Pirate’s Den Dining Room. Look for our Oktoberfest menu items and enjoy some German fare! Cooking Class: The Sandwich Thursday, October 25th | 6:30 pm Formal Dining Room Football Season (yes, there are 5 seasons in my book) is my favorite season of the year! Sure, we all have our favorite teams but you can’t enjoy quality football without fabulous food! One of my football-watchin’ favorites is The Sandwich. This month, I will show you a few delicious sandwich ideas for each meal of the day including breakfast, lunch and dinner. There will be a fun kid’s sandwich too. So, come out and see what you can create with a little bit of bread and a whole lot of toppings. Happy cooking, Chef Stephen Bechan Executive Chef Cuisine Wine as a Dinner Party Gift When receiving wine as a gift from a dinner party guest, the proper official etiquette is to save the wine for later. Since the wine is a gift, you, as hosts, may indeed go ahead and serve the wine(s) you have already selected and save the gift for later. Likewise, when you go to someone’s house and bring wine, you are giving a gift, and it’s not something you should expect to get a little taste of, nor should you expect to dictate how and when it gets used. Do not feel offended when your bottle goes unopened. Your hosts have probably already chilled appropriate whites and/or decanted a red, so let them serve the wines they chose and like. If you’re the type who is going to get all bent out of shape because you brought a bottle of expensive vintage Bordeaux and your friends serve Yellow Tail instead, I would suggest bringing flowers next time (and brush up on your definition of “gift.”). However, we personally make the following exception: should your guest ask ahead of time what to bring, and you suggest (or they offer) wine, if you tell them what you’re serving and they pair it appropriately, you SHOULD, in this case, serve their wine (even if you disagree with their selection, or it’s something you dislike), since it’s more of a contribution to the meal. What wine makes the best gift? Something your hosts will enjoy! If you know their preferences, buy something that fits. If you know where they buy their wine, go to the shop and ask for help from the owner, who will usually have a history of past purchases and will be able to make a very good recommendation based on that. When in doubt, buy Champagne. It always makes an impressive gift and even if your hosts are not big Champagne drinkers, there is no gift that better lends itself to re-gifting. Exercise Adherence Are you the type who starts an exercise program, is very committed for 4 to 6 weeks and then falls off the wagon until January of next year? Time and time again, you try to get the fitness results you so desire. Time and time again nothing changes. Research shows that people who are engaged in some kind of group training, personal training or fitness program/challenge are 60% more likely to adhere to their exercise program and therefore get the results they want. Motivation, accountability, variety and fun are just a few of the benefits of training with a personal trainer or in a group setting. Our fitness programs at The Florida Yacht Club have come a long way with a variety of programs to choose from. We offer group exercise classes that include the highly effective FLEXX IT® weight training class and Yoga (twice a week). We also offer a great variety of classes for our active senior members, aka the “River Queens & Kings”. Our Lose BIG program is an 8 week challenge to achieve fitness results including better dieting habits. We have had some body transformations come out of this program. We offer this program three times a year (fall, winter and spring). Lose BIG is personal training in a group setting that is fun, effective and concentrates on a commitment to exercise with weekly weigh-ins, diet accountability and pre & post testing! Our newest program, FYC’s Football League is just like Fantasy Football. Members compete in mock NFL teams against other teams. Points are earned through all types of exercise: cardio, weight training, classes, personal training, Lose BIG, tennis, etc. There will be playoffs for the top 4 teams and a Super Bowl for the final 2 teams. The team that ends up with the winning amount of points each week will WIN. There is so much to offer at the FYC Fitness Facility. There is something for every age and fitness level. If you have any questions or want to get started and have no clue where to begin, please give me a call at (904) 874-0619 and I will be happy to help you. The two words most often used by the team and supporters to describe FYC’s campaign in the USQS at Harbour Court in Newport, RI. The goal was simple, go to Newport and represent FYC sailing and our Club in the best possible way. We used the event as a platform to show all of what FYC has to offer and that we are a successful Club with a strong membership and a strong tradition of sailing. The competition from the other 23 teams was daunting, the Newport venue storied and was intimidating and the pressure to do well was everpresent. Joining the FYC team in Newport were 45 eager, charismatic and proud FYC members who provided wonderful support all week long. On the first two days of racing, our team scored very well as we were in first place in our fleet and we made it to the championship finals; a lofty team goal attained! The beautiful Thursday night before the Championship finals, we found the FYC burgee flying number one from the mammoth NYYC yard arm with 50 proud FYC members soaking in the recognition during the event. The 13 championship races on Friday and Saturday were exclusively in the J70 and the level of competition increased. Battling 20 knot winds on Saturday, the team held strong through some difficult situations and finished a respectable 7th. The Commodore of the New York Yacht Club said, “The Florida Yacht Club has represented itself very well from the racing to the spectating, your members must be very proud” at the final awards ceremony. Our members should be proud. Led by some enterprising members, our Club set a lofty goal of racing in one of the most exclusive regattas in the country. Our wonderful Club, on the banks of the St. Johns River, achieved high sailing goals and made lasting impressions on new friends around the country! Will Newton
