ACOG Celebrates Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
T
wo of ACOG’s choirs took part in MLK celebrations last month. The Sanctuary Choir joined the
Chicago Sinfonietta Monday, January 20, for its annual MLK concert. It was a performance of
“Mountain Top” at Symphony Center in downtown Chicago. The men of the Brotherhood Chorale
were the featured voices the day before at the Music Institute of Chicago’s annual concert honoring
the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. That concert took place at Nichols Concert Hall in Evanston.

T
he world looks to define grace, and
then define our walk with the Lord
as something different from what it
should be. It wants us to accept the
lesser for the greater, to live beneath our call
to holiness. That’s why growing in grace is so
important to a child of God.
So what is grace?
Grace is the unmerited favor of God. It is
God’s kindness toward a people who doesn’t
deserve it. Thus, there’s nothing we can do to
earn it; freely given to us, it is the source of our
salvation. “For it is by grace you have been saved,
through faith—and this is not from yourselves,
it is the gift of God” (Ephesians 2:8). Grace is
what we live by; it’s what empowers us to live for
Christ.
Living in grace enables us to discern God’s
will in our lives and to resist the allurement of
the world. The struggle between living for God
and being lured into
the traps of sin is
an ongoing battle;
it’s a warfare that
goes on in our
lives, and as the
world begins
to define and
redefine grace and
what’s acceptable,
we sometimes
find
ourselves
taking the lesser for the greater even though we
know better. That’s why we have to daily choose
Christ over the world, to choose His way over
our way, to choose to follow the Spirit over our
flesh. “Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters,
in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a
living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is
your true and proper worship. Do not conform to
the pattern of this world, but be transformed by
the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able
to test and approve what God’s will is—his good,
pleasing and perfect will” (Romans 12:1–2).
There are two primary components to living
in grace: enlightenment and empowerment. We
are enlightened to truth because of the grace
of God. “I pray that the eyes of your heart may
be enlightened in order that you may know the
hope to which he has called you, the riches of his
glorious inheritance in his holy people, and his
incomparably great power for us who believe”
(Ephesians 1:18–19). We are empowered to act
based upon what we know. Later in that same
epistle, Paul prayed,
[O]ut of his glorious riches he may strengthen
you with power through his Spirit in your inner
being, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts
through faith. And I pray that you, being rooted
and established in love, may have power, together
with all the Lord’s holy people, to grasp how wide
and long and high and deep is the love of Christ,
and to know this love that surpasses knowledge—
that you may be filled to the measure of all the
fullness of God. (Ephesians 3:16–19)

Ministry in Profile: The Moody Distance Learning Class by Laura Penson
D
o you
have a
desire
for learning? Do
you feel that God
has called you to
advance in your
walk with Him?
Do you constantly
feel a thirst for
God’s Word? If you
answer yes to any of these questions, the Moody
Bible Distance Learning (MDL) class may be
just for you.
The Moody Bible Distance Learning class
takes place every Sunday morning from 8:00
a.m. to 8:45 a.m. at the Apostolic Church of God.
The Apostolic Church of God is truly blessed to
have these classes available for those who have a
thirst or a calling for knowledge.
The Moody Bible Distance Learning class
has been taught at the Apostolic Church of God
for many years. Brother Nelson Jones has been
teaching this class for more than ten years and
has been a member of the church for twenty-two
years. “I love interacting with students; I love the
rigor of the class and the students’ enthusiasm
for studying the Word and applying it to their
lives. We (the students and teachers) are all
growing and learning together as the students
bring an outstanding experimental background
to the class, all of which make for good
classroom discussions,” says Brother Jones.
Dr. Wilma Turner has been taking the
Moody class for seven years. She said it has
given her different challenges of learning outside
of Sunday services, especially when the pastor
mentions something in his sermons that you
may not fully grasp or you may need clarity.
“It gives you the desire to want to study more
and stay in His Word; it helps you to want to
learn more, to do better,” says Dr. Turner. It also
gives her the confidence to write commentaries.
Discussing the Word of God to others helps to
keep the Word buried in her heart. Dr. Turner is
also a student at Moody Bible Institute working
on a master’s degree in Applied Biblical Studies.
She holds a doctorate degree in education.
Another member of the Apostolic Church
of God, sister Pat Black has been taking MDL
classes for more than two years. She said the
class has given her a greater insight of God’s
Word. It has helped her to embed in her heart
how great His word is and, as a child of God, to
strive to for spiritual maturity.

Receiving God’s Everlasting Love by Jacquelin M. Harris
lifeAPPLICATION
In the Word: Romans 8:31–39
D
r. Maya Angelou is celebrated worldwide for
the accomplishments of her award-winning life.
However, before she became famous, she lived a life
that could have led her down another path. She grew up poor
and fatherless and turned to prostitution herself to make
ends meet. She could have sung the words to CeCe Winans’s
song “Everlasting Love:”
When the darkness filled the earth and sky…And the tears
welled up in the corners of my eyes…Wondered if I’d ever see the light again
One day Ms. Angelou had an epiphany, “God loves me,” she said. It was an amazing concept
to her that God, the Creator the universe, loved her. That revelation revolutionized her whole
life. She felt with God’s love she could accomplish anything, and that she did.
CeCe sings it like this:
…And I knew in that moment that it was your…everlasting, everlasting love…yesterday and today…
Forever more it will remain; even now it’s still the same
The magnitude of God’s love for us is unimaginable. Yet the realization and internalization of His
everlasting love can revolutionize our lives too. Romans 8:38-39 (NKJV) reads, “For I am persuaded
that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to
come…shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
Ask yourself, “Do I believe God loves me?”

Let It Rain by Jacquelin M. Harris

ishop Paul Morton and Christian music artist Michael
W. Smith sing “Let it Rain,” written by Al Jerreau and
James Barry Eastmond. Both renditions of the song are
each unique to their singing styles; yet, we can feel their cry
and praise to God in each one.
Bishop Morton and Mr. Smith were raised in the church
and came to faith in their youth. Each in their own right had
strong ministries influencing people around the country and
the world. Bishop Morton has over 20,000 church members
and founded an organization composed of 1500 churches.
Mr. Smith has sold millions of albums and CDs. What many
people do not know is they both had nervous breakdowns so
severe they had to be hospitalized.
There are times when we have been in a deep, dark pit of mental distress. It may have been caused
by our own actions or circumstances of which we had no control. Prayer, fasting, therapy, and
hospitalization may have been necessary. We cry unto the Lord and sing over and over again, “Let it
Rain, Lord, let it rain, open the floodgates of Heaven and let it rain — I want to see your Glory in my life.”
Finally, through the grace and mercy of God we feel the Lord reining in our lives.
God wants to use us to minister to others as they go through their setbacks. We can share our
testimony of how God brought us out stronger and wiser as a result.

od is love, and we are the children
of God made after His image and
likeness. Therefore, with God
being love, we were made to love.
It had been written in various ways that
when we live in love, we live in God and God
in us (1 John 4:16). So how can we not walk
humbly with our God, for we are His children
and He is our Father?
God has showed us what is good through
the Scriptures, in both Old and New
Testaments, ultimately giving us His Son, who
has showed us the truth and the light and the
way! Therefore, let us do justly, love mercy,
and walk humbly with our God in the way, the
truth, and the light—Jesus Christ!

God is in the Rain
He shall come down like rain upon the mown grass: as showers that water the earth. Psalm 72:6
O
n a hot summer day, when the air is heavy with humidity,
it is almost as if we can smell the rain before it comes—so
we prepare for it. We gather our rain gear, scurry to remove
whatever things we have outside that we do not want to get
wet, close the windows, and prepare to be in the rain or away from it. Can
you hear the sound of the rain pounding against the windows, beating on
the roofs … refreshing as it falls from the heavens and waters the ground,
causing the plants and the fruit of the earth to flourish? It moves like rivers
down the concrete curbs, washing debris from walkways and streets. It
pools and puddles between sidewalk cracks and every space that will
hold it; animals quench their thirst and the earth is refreshed. We see the
handiwork of God and creativity, because God is in the rain.
The Lord is beckoning us to come and be refreshed, renewed,
revitalized—to come from under the burdensome yoke of our own labor
laden with frustration, unbelief, regret, contradiction, toil, worry, fear, and
sorrow. Let’s allow God’s peace and holy arm of righteousness to strike
down every oppressive invader that trespasses against our souls. As we sit
in His presence, He has promised to renew us. Things steal our private time

with God, and we get out of sync. It is necessary to prioritize and make
God first. The pressures of this world, responsibilities, and expectations
weigh heavily and we must make room to be strengthened. “But they
that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength, they shall mount up
on wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk,
and not faint” (Isaiah 40:31). Those whose souls are parched and thirst for
more of God and crave for radical change in our communities, workplaces,
homes, and ourselves, He will answer—the prayers of the righteous avail
much; the rain of the Spirit of Lord will come to relieve and revive.
Desert areas may surround, but the Lord will sustain and make
provision even amidst dry places. God’s people have survived like cactus
and desert flowers adapting to the good, the bad, and the ugly; we have
endured by trusting in God and moving forward like mighty warriors
fighting the good fight of faith. If God be for us, who can be against us? Let
us square our shoulders, lift our heads—God is here. There is a sound of
abundant rain. We will not run for shelter, but we will stand in the midst of
the downpour of His Spirit and be blessed, rejuvenated, and strengthened
to do a greater work. We are His people and the sheep of His pasture.

know that I am the LORD, when I have broken the bands of their yoke
and delivered them from the hand of those who enslaved them. And
they shall no longer be a prey for the nations, nor shall beasts of the
land devour them; but they shall dwell safely, and no one shall make
them afraid. I will raise up for them a garden of renown, and they shall
no longer be consumed with hunger in the land, nor bear the shame of
the Gentiles anymore. Thus they shall know that I, the LORD their God,
am with them, and they, the house of Israel, are My people, says the
Lord GOD. Ezekiel 34:26–30
The Bible mentions rain in several passages—some allegorical in
context, some literal. Some Scriptures describe the rain coming down
and providing needed nourishment for the plants of the earth, while
other passages refer to God watering the dry places of His people’s lives
and making those barren places thrive and be refreshed as the grass and
flowers. In the book of Ezekiel, Ezekiel is in captivity with the children of
Israel in Babylonia; yet, it is in captivity he received his calling as a prophet.
Ezekiel is prophesying to the children of Israel, telling them the plans the
Lord has for their future after the hardship brought on by their rebellious
ways. By process of repentance, purification, restoration, and creating
spiritual and physical boundaries, the Lord is going to establish them in
their own land and shower them with blessings and increase.
What the Lord did for the children of Israel surely He will continue
do for us in this day and time. The winter has been long and harsh; we’ve
hunkered down and made it through. So, hopefully, the worst of the cold
and snow is over. Spring is around the corner and we wait with great
anticipation to see the awakening of the flowers, trees, and grass from
their winter’s slumber. The warmth and rain of spring make nature bloom
and display her glorious grandeur. The artistry of God is amazing! Even
more amazing is when the Lord blesses us with a fresh touch and doors of
new opportunity open for His glory and artistry to be revealed in us more
profoundly. We are living sacrifices to be offered among His people. God
will bless our dreams and hard work. Trust God and continue on the path
that the Lord is leading; He will send the rain.
There is a movie/musical from long ago, “Singing in the Rain” with
Gene Kelly. He sings this song while dancing in the street. The lyrics are
I’m singing in the rain, I’m singing in the rain, what a glorious feeling I‘m
happy again. God can restore happiness, the things that make us laugh,
play, and rejoice with great exuberance. Though happiness is based upon
circumstance; when something good happens we are in that moment
enjoying the outcome. But then there is joy, that state of being content,
whatever situation arrives no matter how contrary, we dig deep into that
solitary place where we have to go meet God alone and make a resolvethat
He is going to work it out for our good; He will make sense of the chaos.
That is joy! The greatness of God can only be explored, never conquered.
His ways are not ours; His miracle-working power is incomprehensible.
The Lord will make our fruit break forth and bud. When we are
following God’s plan for our lives, we are a blessings to others. We become
conduits in which goodness flows along with order, integrity, and stability.
God’s people dispersed throughout the world in places of leadership,
ownership, and servant-hood have tremendous impact to display the heart
of Christ. We are created, called, and saved for the work of God; the saints
of God are most beautiful when we are found serving and advocating.
Can you hear the sound of abundant rain in the distance, coming to
refresh our souls and revive our hearts?
Now faith is the substance of things hoped for the evidence of things
not seen (Hebrews 11:1). By faith Abel offered a more excellent sacrifice
than Cain, by faith Enoch did not see death, by faith Noah build the
ark and saved his family, by faith Abraham sojourned into a place he
did not know to gain his inheritance, by faith he went into the promised
land, by faith Isaac blessed Jacob and Esau concerning things to come,
by faith Joseph gave commandment concerning the resting place for
his remains, by faith Abraham offered up his only begotten son but the
Lord provided a sacrifice, by faith Moses was not afraid of the King’s
command, by faith Moses refused to be called the son of Pharaoh’s
daughter but chose affliction with God’s people rather to enjoy the
pleasure of sin, by faith Moses forsook Egypt not fearful of the King, but
chose the invisible One, through faith he kept the Passover and saved
the firstborn, by faith he passed through the Red Sea, by faith Jericho’s
walls fell, by faith the harlot Rehab hid the spies (God’s men).
(Hebrews 11:1–31, paraphrased.)
So by faith we await a fresh rain of the Holy Spirit to shower our lives.
Let us look to the Lord to manifest His promises to us in extraordinary
ways. “Drip down, O’ heavens from above, and let the clouds (rain) pour
down righteousness; Let the earth open up and salvation bear fruit and
righteous spring up with it. I the Lord create it” (Isaiah 45:8).

The hapless Depree Johnson, 19, could have
benefited from those tips. He was just doing a
little bragging about his guns and money on
Instagram when he heard a knock on the door.
Well, maybe not that quick. But he heard a
knock on the door shortly after he took a picture
of himself with his guns. A sheriff ’s deputy in Palm Beach County took
note of the picture, the guns, and the fact that
Johnson is a convicted felon who is not supposed
to have guns. Thus, the knock on the door ensued
when the deputy obtained a warrant. The result was a happy deputy and an unhappy
prisoner with 142 counts of felony charges against
him for burglaries and other offenses. And it’s not just felons who have to worry. A whole new area of lawsuits is blooming
out there for people who give really nasty
reviews about a company online. They are
called SLAPP suits (Strategic Lawsuits Against
Public Participation) and they aim to silence a
complainer, according to dailyfinance.com. Online
reviews are bread and butter to companies. A
bad review can ruin sales and, if the review is
false, some companies are taking their case to

The Confession (DVD)

A Year Filled with...
Lent: A Season to Grow Closer

M
y first observations of Lent was as a child.
I attempted to complete my Lenten gleaners,
a quarter each day. My dad, who completed his
faithfully each year, usually finished mine for me.
At the time, I had no idea what Lent was about.
Now that I’m older and have a personal
relationship with Jesus Christ, I understand Lent
and the tremendous opportunity it affords the
body of Christ to know Him more and better.
“Lent is to be a season of soul-searching and
repentance, a time to reflect and prepare our
hearts for a fresh revelation of Christ’s redeeming
love,” writes Tricia McCary Rhodes, author of The
Soul at Rest: Journey into Contemplative Prayer.
Lent is observed the forty days (not including
Sundays) leading up to Easter, beginning with
Ash Wednesday. It’s not mentioned in Scripture;
however, it’s observed by many Christians with
a period of fasting, while focusing on the death,
burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
If you plan to observe Lent this year (it begins
March 5), following are some suggestions from
McCary on things you can give up:
Abstain from food—this is the most
traditional way to fast. Prayerfully make a
decision how you will do it, whether it’s giving
up a meal a day, your favorite foods, etc. For a
complete understanding of the various types of
fasts you can undertake, see Fasting for Spiritual
Breakthrough: A Guide to Nine Biblical Fasts by
Elmer L. Towns.
Give up media—If you’re addicted to
Facebook, consider not visiting your page, or even
shutting it down so you’re not tempted. Maybe
it’s text messaging that consumes you. If you’re
someone who texts so much that it interferes with
other parts of your life, consider giving it up for a
few weeks (except in cases of emergency). Other
forms of media you can give up: television, secular
music, or magazines.
Curb your spending—“Spend money only as
truly necessary. Avoid going out to eat or buying
drinks or snacks or new clothes, etc. At the end of
each week, estimate how much you’ve saved, and

he year 2013 started out with
a diagnosis of cancer for my
mother. One month there was no
evidence that it was there and the
next month physicians were talking about
stage two or three cancer and the need for
chemotherapy, surgery, radiation, and a year
of herceptin treatments every three weeks.
However, through it all, and all the things that
happen when one has cancer, my mother’s
faith in God remained strong.
She continued to attend church most
Sundays and to check on Sunday Morning
Bible Study’s elective department, for which
she is responsible. She and her husband, Elder
Maurice Landry, continued to minister at the
nursing home and give communion.
So when I was told in May that I needed to
have major surgery I depended on the faith
and strength that I had seen in my mother. I
told my doctor that I couldn’t have surgery
until the fall, as I had several major activities
planned during the summer and early fall for
my job at Northern Illinois University and
other organizations. In August I spoke with
Deacon Ray Nuckolls about a possible date for
the Christmas concert (I sing in the Sanctuary
Choir). I then scheduled my surgery for
October 21. Throughout the summer and fall,
my symptoms worsened and I knew surgery
was unavoidable. My mother completed
radiation four days before my surgery, after
having had surgery over the summer.
God had blessed her and kept her, and the
tumors shrunk and were removed. In fact,
she was feeling better than she or the doctors
expected. The week before my surgery, I told
Deacon Nuckolls and Herald “Chip” Johnson,
the director of the music ministry, I was
having surgery and would be out up to six
weeks, but I’d be back as soon as possible. In
my mind, I was focused on being able to sing
with the choir again for Thanksgiving; and
I was determined to sing in the Christmas
concert.

As I waited to be taken into surgery on
Monday, October 21, fear overtook me and
I became concerned about the pain I would
experience after the surgery. Mom and
Maurice prayed with me, the rest of the family,
and my surgeons. At that point I knew that I
was in good hands and was reminded that fear
is not from God. I had a sense of peace as I
went into surgery. Of course when I came out
of surgery I was pain free. I told the doctor
I would be going home that Wednesday and
that I knew the markers I needed to complete
before I would be allowed to go home. By
that evening, I was eating a little solid food.
The next day I got up and walked the hallway
and took pictures of my incision with my cell
phone. About 30 staples were needed to close
up the incision. I went home that Wednesday
as I had planned. I was pain free without
drugs—the doctors couldn’t believe it.
That next Monday the staples were
removed, and I told my doctor I would be
driving the following day, as he went over
several precautions with me. That Tuesday I
drove myself to choir rehearsal from Aurora,
Illinois. I had planned to just sit in the pews,
but I felt well enough to sit in the choir
stand and to stand when needed. Deacon
Nuckolls looked at me in disbelief as he saw
me in the choir stand that Tuesday, one week
after my surgery. That following Sunday, I
planned to return to church and just sit in
the congregation; however, when I arrived at
church I felt well enough in my spirit and body
to sing with the choir.
So less than two weeks after my surgery I
was back singing with the choir in my usual
place. My family was in shock. I began to
testify that God not only showed up, but
He showed out. And when we sang “You’re
Looking at a Miracle” that Sunday, I couldn’t
help but to break out in tears as I thought of
the journey that my mom and I have taken
last year.

Believers must intentionally take time to read and study the Word
of God, as well as pray and fast; such practices strengthen our ability
to hear and see God. There is too much coming at us not to discipline
ourselves spiritually (for a complete list of spiritual disciplines, check
out Celebration of Discipline: The Path to Spiritual Growth by Richard
Foster).
Contrary to what the world (or the enemy of our souls) would have
us to believe, grace does not give us license to live any way we please.
“[W]here sin increased, grace increased all the more, so that, just as sin
reigned in death, so also grace might reign through righteousness to
bring eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. What shall we say, then?
Shall we go on sinning so that grace may increase? By no means! We are
those who have died to sin; how can we live in it any longer?” (Romans
5:20-21, 6:1-2, NIV).
God’s grace sustains us; it builds us up in our relationship with Him.
While the enemy seeks to blind us from God, to pull us away from Him
and deceive us, grace empowers us to see our lives victorious in God. By
grace we are enlightened to truth and enabled, through God’s Spirit, to
do His will.
