PROVIDENCE PANTHER JACK KING IS WEST POINT BOUND
Written by Rachel Tomchin
“What led me to choose Army was the opportunity it presented. It is extremely
unique, and I felt honored to play football at a Division 1A level, get the best education
in America, and serve our country.”
Those are the words of Jack King, a rising senior football player at Providence High
School. Jack recently made a college commitment to the United States Military Academy, also known to many as West Point.
Jack is a well rounded young man who is determined to succeed in all aspects of his
collegiate future. He is excited to see what the football program holds for him and the
many experiences and relationships that will come with it at West Point. He plans to take
his toughness and dedication to West Point and become a future leader of our country.
Jack thought long and hard about his commitment, and in the end he simply felt this
was the best decision for his life.
“I have a great connection with the coaches and I think the program is headed in the
right direction and I really wanted to be a part of that.”
The son of Rich and Susan King not only succeeds on the football field, but in baseball
and basketball, as well. He first started playing football in the 4th grade as a MARA Colt.
He is now safety/outside linebacker for Providence High School’s football team. Jack’s
role as a leader is to encourage his teammates to compete and motivate them with his
positive attitude.
It has been difficult for Jack to perform at his best due to an ACL tear he suffered
when playing against South Meck in football this year. Physical therapy has been a challenge for him during his rehabilitation period. But being on the bench for both basketball
and baseball has impacted him greatly because he loves competing and working with his
teammates. He is excited to see what his senior year holds in all of three of these sports.
Jack has many athletic accomplishments as he has started on all three varsity sports
teams since his freshman year. One of his favorite football memories is the progress his
team has made in the playoffs making it one round further each year. He hopes this year
will be their best yet.
Along with his athletic accomplishments Jack performs well in the classroom with a
3.8 GPA while taking honors and AP classes. He plans to uphold this great balance when
he goes off to college because he will be busy with football, military activities and academics. Jack says his college life will definitely be different than others. Congratulations
Jack King, the South Charlotte Sports Report wishes you the best of luck in your future!
Go far and continue to be a leader that we can all be proud of.

The Shoeless Enterprises
Leadership Award
Brad Scharf
South Mecklenburg High School senior soccer player
Brad Scharf has been been awarded the Shoeless
Enterprises Leadership Award. Brad is the son of Paul
and Julie Scharf and he is on track to be a four year
letter winner for the Sabres Soccer Team. Brad was
named the team captain as a junior and captured first
team All-Conference and All-Region honors. Brad will
provide leadership for the team this year from the
center back position.
“We want to build on the success that we have demonstrated over the past several seasons. Ultimately our
goal is to win both the Conference and State Championships.”
Brad is an outstanding leader on and off the field of play. He also works as a
certified NC Soccer referee building on his leadership skills.
“Leadership means several things to me. Leadership has to start in the
classroom, continue to practice, and of course be shown on the field. I feel
strongly about “leading by example” especially with younger players. I think
of leadership as a combination of Unselfishness, Accountability, Respect,
Motivation, and Sportsmanship.”
Brad carries a 4.3 grade point average in the classroom and takes both
honors and AP classes. He is also a member of the National Honor Society
and serves as a Peer Tutor at South Meck. Following graduation Brad plans
to attend college and major in business. Congratulations to Brad Scharf for
winning the Shoeless Enterprises Leadership Award.
JUSTIN GEISEL IS READY FOR
SOCCER SEASON TO BEGIN
Written by Joe Vitale
Justin Geisel is a rising senior at
Charlotte Country Day School. This
upcoming season will be Geisel’s
fourth on the Charlotte Country Day
Varsity Soccer team, where has started
at center back each year. Now 6-foot3-inches tall, Geisel has been playing
soccer since he was four years old.
In the high school ranks, Geisel has
found great success both on and off
the field, helping lead his varsity soccer team to back-to-back state championships in 2013 and 2014, while anchoring the back line of defense.
Dustin Swinehart, Geisel’s coach,
has assigned him as team captain this
fall. Geisel is a great representative
for his team, as he displays the work
ethic that coaches love to see on the
field, in the weight room, and most
importantly, in the classroom.
Academics are a priority to the
Geisel’s as he has maintained good
grades throughout his first three years
at Charlotte Country Day School, one
of the state’s more academically challenging institutions. Geisel also stars
on his club team, Charlotte United FC Gold (1997), being crowned state champions in back-to-back years and reaching the quarterfinals of the Region III
Championships in both of those years. Following his senior year, Geisel hopes
to continue playing soccer for either Yale University, Duke University, University of Notre Dame, Bucknell University, Davidson College, Lafayette College
or Oberlin College.
When speaking to Geisel’s teammates and peers, they all described him
pretty much the same - “Fun”. I found him to fit that characteristic as well.
When around Justin, you cannot help but laugh at his jokes and smile from the
positive energy he gives off. His teammates, his peers and his coaches all love
him and are expecting big things from the rising senior as he moves forward in
his soccer career.
The South Charlotte Sports Report salutes Justin Geisel on his success in
the classroom and on the field of play. We send out our wishes for a wonderful
senior season of play!

SARAH LATOUR CONTINUES
TO SET THE PACE ON THE TRACK
Cuthbertson High School rising Sophomore Sarah LaTour is competing in the USATF Junior Olympics National Track and Field Championships held in
Jacksonville Fla. July 28th – Aug 2nd. Sarah has
had an impressive summer with the Charlotte Flight
Track Club. She has placed first in six 1500m races
including the Powerade State Games, the AAU Regional Qualifier, the USATF Association meet and
the USATF Regional Championships. The Regional Championship qualified her for the Nationals in
Jacksonville. She has also placed first in the 3000m
in four races. At the regional championships held in
Hampton Va., she set personal bests in the 1500m
with a time of 4:57.13, the 800m with a time of 2:2x.x
and the 3000m with a time of 10:47.53. Sarah is currently ranked 5th in the state in the 1500m and 11th
in the 3000m according to Milesplit.com
In addition to qualifying for the USATF Junior Olympic Nationals, LaTour has
also qualified in the 800m, 1500m and the 3000m for the AAU National Olympics
being held in Norfolk Va.
Sarah LaTour is certainly setting the pace on the track!
Sarah began running at age five and there has been no looking back ever since.
Ironically it was her participation in softball that led her to begin a track career.
“One day our softball team was practicing at Marvin Ridge High School and I
watched some girls running on the hills behind the softball field. It looked like fun,
so after practice I went and ran the hills in my cleats. I think I got hooked right
then. I tried out for Cuthbertson Middle’s Cross-Country team and made it and
have been running cross country and track ever since.”
Sarah maintains a fast pace in the classroom as well with an A/B average. She
works hard to stay on top of her studies while training.
“I enjoy school and love to learn new things, but it is hard to find a balance
sometimes.”
Moving forward Sarah has her eyes on one day becoming a physical therapist
that works with kids or a physical education teacher.
The South Charlotte Sports Report salutes Sarah LaTour on all her hard work
and we look forward to watching her success over the next few seasons! Keep
running!

BEYOND THE GAME
WITH REBECCA MURRAY
By Joey Vitale
Rebecca Murray is a rising sophomore at Sun Valley High School
where she is a starting outfielder on the varsity softball team. Sun
Valley named Rebecca as Newcomer of the Year her freshman season
and she led all Union County schools in runs scored with 30. She was
also named first team all Union County after she finished third on her
team in batting and had a total of 44 hits. Let’s dig a little deeper into
Murray’s life and go Beyond the Game.
How long have you been playing softball? What is it about
the game that has made you stick with it for a long as you
have?
“I have been playing softball for 10 years. What has made me stick
with the game is the competitiveness and the excitement, celebrating
and bonding with your teammates is one of the best feelings.”
What position do you primarily play? Do you ever move around and try other positions?
“I primarily play outfield and usually just stick with outfield.”
Even though you are only entering your sophomore season, have you given any thought
to college yet? Have you received any interest from college coaches?
“My goal is to continue to play in college. Our tournaments are in front of college coaches and I think
there are some colleges interested in me.”
What is your most memorable play/game/moment from your softball career?
“I think my most memorable game is pitching all 11 innings in the 4-1 win against Marvin Ridge for
the championship in 7th grade.”
To whom do you contribute your success to?
“I contribute my success to my parents for the support and always being there to help me with whatever I need to work on. I also contribute my success to my coaches for making me the ballplayer I am
today and continuing to push and help me get better.”
