INTRODUCTION
On behalf of the Hong Kong Jockey Club,
I am delighted to introduce this year’s
Global Sprint Challenge.
The Global Sprint Challenge was established
in 2005 as a series of sprint races in Australia,
Japan and the UK. Hong Kong and Dubai joined
subsequently, expanding the Challenge’s global
reach and further advancing its aim to bring
together the world’s best sprinters. Horse racing
is more international in its scope than at any
time in the sport’s long and storied existence:
its globalisation has quickened in recent years,
particularly since the turn of the century, and the
Global Sprint Challenge plays a vanguard role as
the only multi-race international Group 1 series
to stage races in multiple jurisdictions across the
calendar year.
There is a noticeable change to this year’s
Challenge schedule, a change that has prompted a
good deal of excitement in Hong Kong. For the first
time, the Hong Kong Jockey Club will host two of the
competition’s 10 legs. The LONGINES Hong Kong
Sprint is already firmly-established as the final leg
and joining the Global Sprint Challenge roster for
2016 is Hong Kong’s “second” great speed test, the
Chairman’s Sprint Prize.
This year’s series of 10 Group 1 races will commence
at Flemington Racecourse, Australia, on 20 February
with the 2016 edition of the Black Caviar Lightning
Stakes. The Chairman’s Sprint Prize forms the
fourth leg of the Global Sprint Challenge as we
have moved the race from its previous February
slot to Sunday 1 May. This will bridge the gap
between the Dubai Golden Shaheen and Japan’s
Takamatsunomiya Kinen, which are on consecutive
days during the last weekend of March, and the fifth
leg, the King’s Stand Stakes at Royal Ascot in June.
The King’s Stand Stakes is the first of Britain’s three
uninterrupted legs. The Diamond Jubilee Stakes
follows at Ascot four days later and the Darley
July Cup at Newmarket a month after that, which
is Europe’s mid-summer sprint highlight. Japan’s
second leg, the Sprinters Stakes at Nakayama
comes along in October, followed by Australia’s
Darley Classic at the Melbourne Spring Carnival
in November. That brings us to the finale, the
LONGINES Hong Kong Sprint at Sha Tin to round
off the series.

Prior to our excited reaction at having two Hong
Kong races in the series, there was an initial sense
of loss upon learning that the KrisFlyer Sprint
would be discontinued. The Singapore Turf Club
did a fantastic job as hosts and Singapore in May
had become a firm favourite for Hong Kong’s
horsemen, as it had for so many others from around
the world. Lucky Nine won the race twice and last
year at Kranji Hong Kong’s Aerovelocity won his
third Global Sprint Challenge leg within six months,
following on from wins in the LONGINES Hong Kong
Sprint and Japan’s Takamatsunomiya Kinen. If
only Aerovelocity’s Hong Kong Sprint win had not
been in the previous year! No horse has yet won
the US$1 million bonus for winning three legs in
three different countries within a calendar year, but
Aerovelocity at least showed that it is achievable.
In keeping with the Global Sprint Challenge ethos,
the Hong Kong Jockey Club has a longstanding
and wholehearted commitment to horse racing’s
internationalisation at the elite level. That being
so, it is a pleasure to partner with fellow racing
jurisdictions that are not only synonymous with
world class racing but also share the Club’s vision
of racing as an international sport. We are seeing
more and more owners and trainers seeking viable
opportunities for their horses overseas, and that
type of transnational competition at the elite level
is essential to the sport’s continuing relevance in
a world market place that offers many competing
sports and entertainment alternatives. The Global
Sprint Challenge, with its lucrative rewards and
attendant prestige, succeeds in encouraging the
world’s horsemen to take up the challenge and in
turn delivers an engaging global narrative to horse
racing’s exciting speed division.

GLOBAL SPRINT CHALLENGE BONUS
US$1 MILLION BONUS
TRAVEL INCENTIVES
A US$1 million bonus is available during the
2016 Global Sprint Challenge. To claim the bonus a
horse must win a minimum of three Group 1 races
across three different jurisdictions (countries)
during the 2016 Global Sprint Challenge.
All parties hosting Global Sprint Challenge
races welcome enquiries concerning potential
contributions towards the cost of transport
for horses travelling from overseas to compete
specifically in challenge races.
The bonus will be split 75% (US$750,000) to the
horse’s owners and 25% (US$250,000) to the
horse’s trainer. In the event of more than one
bonus qualifier, the US$1 million pool will be
divided equally amongst the winners.
As a general rule, travel incentives will be offered
to horses rated 115 or above including leg
winners travelling within the series. However,
travel incentives will not apply for horses being
transferred to be campaigned in the country or
jurisdiction in which they will be newly trained.
For further information, please contact the
committee representatives, as offers in this
respect vary from jurisdiction to jurisdiction.
CURRENCY
Currencies shown in this brochure are the local
currency of the host country. If the US$1 million
bonus is to be paid out it will be converted according
to current exchange rates at the time of payment.

The Flemington straight course,
starting from a chute that joins
the course proper, is perfectly flat.
Historically, riders took one side
of the course or another, looking
for the rail to guide them in the
race, with the field often splitting
to both rails. However, in recent
years the field more often than
not packs in one group up the
centre of the track.
The course record for 1000m at
Flemington is 55.42 sec, set by
Black Caviar in February 2013.

The Darley July Cup is run on
Newmarket’s beautiful and
atmospheric summer racecourse,
the July Course. It is the highlight
of the three-day Newmarket
July Festival and is run on the
meeting’s final day.
The six furlong (1200 metres)
course is entirely straight with
some undulations and an uphill
climb in the final furlong to the
winning post. The maximum
field size is 20 runners plus two
reserves (if necessary, balloting
will be done according to
international ratings).

The Flemington straight course,
starting from a chute that joins
the course proper, is perfectly
flat. Historically, riders took one
side of the course or another,
looking for the rail to guide them
in the race, with the field often
splitting to both rails. However, in
recent years the field more often
than not packs in one group up
the centre of the track.

The LONGINES Hong Kong Sprint
is one of the world's richest sprint
races and is always staged on
the second Sunday in December.
The race is run right-handed on a
turf track that is flat, 30.5 metres
wide and with a home straight of
approximately 430 metres.
A "Good" track surface is likely
in December. The race is limited
to 14 runners and the occasion,
which features four Group 1
International turf races, is the
biggest single-day sporting event
in Hong Kong.
