Summer Issue - France France With 83 million foreign tourists in 2012, France is ranked as the first tourist destination in the world! France has some of the world’s largest and renowned museums, including the Louvre, which is located in Paris. Louvre is the most visited art museum in the world. The Musée d’Orsay, mostly devoted to impressionism, and the Beaubourg that is dedicated to contemporary art. With more than 10 millions tourists a year, the French Riviera (or Côte d’Azur), in south-east France, is the second leading tourist destination in the country, after the Paris region. It benefits from 300 days of sunshine per year, 115 kilometres (71 mi) of coastline and beaches, 18 golf courses, 14 ski resorts and 3,000 restaurants. Each year the Côte d’Azur hosts 50% of the world’s superyacht fleet. Another major destination are the Châteaux of the Loire Valley, this World Heritage Site is noteworthy for its architectural heritage, in its historic towns but in particular its castles (châteaux), such as the Châteaux d’Amboise, de Chambord, d’Ussé, de Villandry and Chenonceau. 360 MAGAZINE 5 A Note From the President When nature calls, do we really care which latrine our transgender friends visit? Honestly, if everyone has a copy of the 360 Magazine Sabrina Carpenter issue (shameless plug), there would be peace and attentiveness towards the gorgeous talent in this art book—not on the identity of your stall neighbor. On a serious note, I experience heartache every time I hear or see racist, sexist, or homophobia driven rhetoric and action that continuously aids in the division of the U.S. Detroit’s Comback France Issue 24 Contents Remembering Prince|10 Relax in Hot Springs, Arkansas 64 Journeys of Discovery with Tom Wilmer |14 Rolls-Royce Dawn|30 Excavating Experience|38 2016 Jaguar XJL Portfolio AWD |42 Danielle Taylor |49 Sabrina Carpenter 106 Terrie M. We fashioned this issue keeping intimacy in mind. Intimacy heightens understanding that can inspire care. This, I believe, is needed in the U.S. right now. Revisiting, the national transgender bathroom war, we should not put our care towards separation, but should care about adjusting outdated and close-minded civility standards to level with our diverse population. The article Detroit’s Comeback is an intimate portrait reflecting on my experiences in my hometown, Detroit. We include a touching tribute to Prince, an inspirational piece on the notable Terrie Williams, and of course deliver edgy, moving, and transformative works of art. - VAUGHN LOWERY, President/Editorial Director Vaughn Lowery | Editorial Director Ashley Caputo | Associate Editor-at-Large Lester Guidry | Creative Director Crystal Wong | Art Director Stella Dugall | Brand Architect Haven Skye | Copy Editor Theodore Louis | Copy Editor Eiko Watanabe | Associate Editor Terry Dexter | Music Editor Brandon West | Music Contributor Montre Burton | Arts + Culture Editor Kenia Mazariegos | Life/Style Contributor Jackson Murray | Culture Contributor Ron Contarsy | Sr. Staff Photographer Marc Littlejohn | Fashion Director Apuje Kalu | Fashion Editor Matthew Anderson | Fashion Contributor Courtney Chenard | Fashion Contributor Eric Horton | Fashion Contributor Katie Meadway | Fashion Contributor Bob Cal | Fashion Intern Brian Perry | Hair Editor Justin Lowery | Interior Design Suzie Kim | Makeup Editor The Doc | Health Editor Rannon Harris | Entertainment Editor T’Quan Wilson | Entertainment Contributor Byron G. | Travel Editor Alonzo Demarco | Fitness Editor Nicholas Holt | Fitness Editor-at-Large Lakei Cannon | Fitness Contributor Alex Garibyan | Fitness Contributor Michael Denison | Business Manager Darryl Scipio | Legal Counsel Taylor Louis, LLP | Legal Counsel Brian Greer | SVP of Sales + Marketing Mike Pirone | SVP of Sales + Marketing Anthony Sovinsky | Account Executive Jason Gates | Logistics Administrator Chris Gates | Marketing Coordinator Raqiyah Mays | Dir. of Events Arthur Rutledge | Dir. of Promotions Jae Joseph | Brand Manager Dion Hickles | Brand Ambassador Glenn Murray | Brand Ambassador Rothstein Williams | UK Brand Ambassador Mohammed Ismail | French Brand Ambassador Clinton A. The news, just minutes after it was made official, went immediately viral. Celebrities like Madonna, Missy Elliott, Justin Timberlake, and Katy Perry expressed remorse over the legendary musician’s sudden passing. A walk down memory lane highlights Prince’s indisputable mark on the music industry, that will continues to inspire generations of artists to come. During his high school years, Prince started pursuing musical ambitions. His first band, Grand Central, also known as Champagne, left him with a whirlwind of experiences. Although the band split, Prince continued on and signed with Warner Bros. Records in 1978. Prince’s debut album, For You, in the same year, granted him a steady road towards success. In 1981 Controversy hit the stores and the title track grabbed 3rd place on the R&B charts. Prince gained international fame with 1999 that released in 1982. The album featured top 10 hits like “Little Red Corvette,” the apocalyptic “1999,” and “Delirious.” But, what most people remember is the classic and accompanying blockbuster film, Purple Rain, that released in 1984. Undoubtedly his best yet, this record presented the highly sentimental title track, “Purple Rain”, and no. 1 hits on Billboard Hot 100: “Let’s Go Crazy” accompanied by “When Doves Cry.” Meanwhile, Prince solidified his trademark image with curly hair, loose jackets, and ruffled outfits. He inspired a number of artists who produced covers for his songs. Starting in the mid ‘80s, Chaka Khan reinterpreted the 1979 version of “I Feel For You” with relatively great success. “Nothing Compares 2 U” was covered by Sinead O’ Connor. In 2001, Alicia Keys chose “How Come U Don’t Call Me Anymore” to be included in her debut album. Prince also collaborated with various musicians to sharpen their work, such as Madonna, Tevin Campbell, Kate Bush, Patti LaBelle, and Janelle Monáe. Prince escaped the public eye for a few years, but his sweeping return in 2004. His sweeping return happened in 2004 at the Grammy Awards with Beyoncé. There was no turning back at this point. He released Musicology and went on tour, cemented his name in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and won two Grammys for the aforementioned album. In 2006, he published yet another work: 3121. He also won a Golden Globe for Best Original Song in the animated film Happy Feet. Fast forward to 2010, Prince was awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award from the BET Awards and became a new addition to the Grammy Hall of Fame. But Prince had one goal in mind throughout his career which he shared upon his induction to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2004. “When I first started out in the music industry, I was most concerned with freedom. Freedom to produce, freedom to play all the instruments on my records, freedom to say anything I wanted to,” and he did just that. His often controversial lyrics and lifestyle tested the limits of music pushing it to levels many imitate to this day. 10 360 MAGAZINE 360 MAGAZINE 11 e l p o e p y s r bu o f e n i e ff a C 100% organic. Massive layoffs occurred, the population dwindled, and many media outlets repeatedly reported on the abundance of abandoned buildings. Fast forward to May 18, 2016, we gained a first-hand perspective on a more modern Detroit artfully colored with murals, new scholastic properties, and an admirable yet eclectic river-walk. A once dilapidated town seemed to be reborn - neighborhoods like Cass Corridor, a suburban area in the city, now has been revived into a more intellectual, a Bohemian sector with loads of designer beer companies like Motor City Brewery and Traffic Jam & Snug (a pub grub established in 1965). Detroit’s Comeback Vaughn Lowery It was a very memorable year for the city of Detroit when I resolved to run away from home at the ripe age of nine. Determined to leave everything behind with no cash or jacket on hand, I proceeded to flee towards downtown. The only beacon in view was the Tiger’s Stadium floodlights which heavily shined into a dark abyss off of Trumbull Boulevard. Approximately 7:49pm on October 14,1984, a massive roar erupted from the arena as our baseball team had just won the World Series against the San Diego Padres. Our city was electrifying - people bustling on every street corner, car horns blared in succinct and the stench of hot dogs and popcorn permeated the air. Then all of sudden, rain poured down on us. Shortly after, during a heavy episode of shivering, I was whisked away into a police car after an officer noticed I had no parent in tow. Homeward bound but animated with joy, I got a taste of what it was like to be an adult in one of the most populous, prolific and cities in America, Detroit, Michigan. A vital, internationally diverse city fueled by the “Big Three” filled with skyscrapers and colossal cathedrals. 24 360 MAGAZINE Who would have ever imagined that a city which plummeted from grace would be capable to pick herself back up and regain her reign? As a graduate of Martin Luther King, Jr. Senior High School (the first Detroit Public School to gain a state football championship) and a passing member of its track team, I often jogged along the east riverfront. In fact, I resided within ample walking distance from the Grayhaven Marina Village similar to Klenk and Harbor Islands. (A secluded island developed in the 1920’s by some of the wealthiest with private canals and boat wells making it the ultimate yacht to home territory). Distinctly recalling a few decades ago, one couldn’t tread too far on the riverfront because it wasn’t purposed for enjoyment. It was plagued with polluted waters, lots of homeless people and rampant criminal activity. Alex Howbert of Detroit River Sports introduced us to a whole new side of the city. We paddled throughout the marina in single seat kayaks and floated by historical homes like that of Lawrence Fisher. He was one of the most flamboyant tycoons of his kin (or the infamous Fisher Brothers) Whom helmed Cadillac and was a head of the Fisher Body, supplying GM with auto parts during the 1920’s. This was an iconic area largely due to it’s location near Lake St. Clair. We still caught a peek of the Garwood Mansion. In 1927, Garfield “Gar” Arthur Wood was a legendary Detroit speed boat racer, motorboat builder, entrepreneur and inventor - the first man to travel at 100 miles per hour on water. We were enamored by how healthy the ecosystem was (beavers have returned to this area every bit well as pike, bass, sturgeon, alligator gar and sheephead fish) fisherman at bay screaming “Line!,” and the fact that we were in international waters with visible National Coast Guard ships. In fact, this used to be one of the largest shipping corridors in the globe and today it’s still the biggest border crossing in Northern America for international trade with 25% of merchandise transported between Canada and America via the Ambassador Bridge (a suspension toll bridge owned by Grosse Pointe billionaire Manuel Moroun). Also in the near distance is a 982-acre island park in the Detroit River, between the United States mainland and Canada, Belle Isle home of the 2016 Chevrolet Grand Prix. Shortly after, we went to Wheelhouse Detroit to rent bikes and received a scenic bike tour of the urban center. The Dequindre Cut Greenway, formerly a Grand Trunk Western Railroad line, opened in May 2009. It boasts a 20ft pathway for both pedestrians on foot and non-motorized vehicles, sitting twenty-five feet beneath street level. Our asphalt journey took us to Atwater Brewery where we had a voluptuous dirty blonde inside their taproom and biergarten. Then we sped over to MilIken Park and the Outdoor Adventure Center. Michigan’s Department of Natural Resources has staged one of the most explicit indoor parks mimicking some of nature’s most riveting outdoor activities. The kids climbed inside a faux tree with slide while a wooden-planked footbridge hung overtop aside, what appeared to be a bright red crashed old fighter plane. The rustic yet modern conference room was laced with cabin-like walls and mounted stuffed moose heads - a great locale for a reception or birthday party. Throughout 360 MAGAZINE 25 the campus families can partake in tons of photo opportunities with life size deer and a “Smokey the Bear.” Other attractions inside include: an actual waterfall; yurt and tent coupled with various simulators for bike racing, kayaking, fishing and rifle hunting. Other worthwhile destinations close to the trail were the Riverwalk where we got to pack in some of the city’s newly fabricated wetlands, tons of eateries, a glimpse of the iconic Renaissance Center (the tallest building in the city). And, a bracing encounter with the historic Eastern Market - a 125yro destination in the heart of the city with fresh food, restaurants, businesses, art and refinement. The succeeding day we visited the Detroit Zoo for a private golf cart safari. We saw wolves dance, chimpanzees swing from branches, lazy tigers retreat to their lair for an early morning nap and giraffes being fed by park attendants. Notwithstanding, this is home to the largest Penquin facility in the world, eighty Penquins from six different species. In perfect sequential order, they pitched in and out of a recreated Antarctic, aquatic environment all while feasting on small fish underwater. After all, these were the headliners of this habitat, one by one adorned in a tuxedo-like formal wear they surfaced with numerous curtsies and bows, always acknowledging a spectator’s presence. As the day progressed, we maneuvered over to the magnanimous Ford Rouge Factory (in 1921 it was home to the world’s first mass-produced tractor, the Fordson) and then onto The Henry Ford Museum. The exhibit houses everything relative to motor culture and its history, including locomotives and air planes. We acquired a first-hand encounter with JFK’s limousine and FDR’s secret service transport. In addition, the collective dives deep into cultural movements having lasting impacts on today’s society. For instance, they display the actual bus from December 1, 1955 when African-American seamstress Rosa Parks was arrested for failing to give up her seat on a Montgomery city bus to a white man, igniting a spark for the Civil Rights movement. Along the same grounds was the largest outdoor museum, Greenfield Village. We toured the reservation on a horse drawn omnibus while some rode the steam engined train. The frosting on the cake was our brief excursion to The Ford Piquette Plant - the actual space where over 12,000 sensous Models T cars were manufactured. And, if you’re in the mood for some musicology, then drop by the Motown Museum and pay homage to Barry Gordy’s “Studio A” - it’s where legendary acts like Diana Ross, Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye and The Temptations recorded their albums. 26 360 MAGAZINE 360 MAGAZINE 27 The crux of our trip was a snack bar-style dinner inside a party suite at Comerica Park (an open-air ballpark located Downtown Detroit). It was here we learned of the city’s various expansion plans, including the newly announced Little Caesar’s Arena ($627.5-million dollar investment which is expected to open September 2017) for the Red Wings of the National Hockey League. Ultimately, the city will have various stateof-the-art performance venues and house three of its major professional sports outfits (football, hockey and baseball) within the downtown region, District Detroit (over $1.2 billion dollars and counting will be spent to develop area from both private and public sectors). According to the Mike Ilitch’s Olympia Development Group of Michigan’s website (www. districtdetroit.com), “The District Detroit will be 50 blocks of thriving businesses, parks, restaurants, bars and event goals.s. It will be home to the young and the young at heart, families, new residents and longtime residents who want to be where the action is. The District will connect Downtown and Midtown into one contiguous, walkable area, where families, sports fans, entrepreneurs, job seekers, entertainment lovers and others who crave a vibrant urban setting can connect with each other and the city they love.” 28 360 MAGAZINE The nightlife track in Detroit has been on the incline with popular venues like Punch Bowl Social where patrons grab a drink, bowl and socialize at various stations throughout the property. WXYZ Bar, a swank and contemporary lounge for millenials featuring live music, sits inside the newly introduced modern yet glamourous Aloft Hotel at the David Whitney. If you wish to test your luck on slots or blackjack, go up a flight of stairs and take the Detroit People Mover (2.94-mile automated train system which operates on a single track and encircles downtown) to the MGM, Motorcity and/ or the Greektown Casinos (all are open 24/7). With The James Beard Foundation Awards being kept in close proximity, the city has embraced a more voguish culinary ambiance. If you’re in the mood for non-traditional Italian menu drop by Dan Mancini’s La Rondinelli for some delicious manicotti, a glass of wine with an order of fennel and fagioli (a great vegan option). Or, take full advantage of a 130 taps in midtown (in the vicinity of the Detroit Institute of Arts - houses one of the largest and most substantial art collections in the USA) alongside a “paddy melt” with macaroni and cheese. And, of course, you have to try most of their corned beef sandwiches. Moreover, Selden Standard, a four-star stylish cafe (awarded by the Detroit Free Press), offers a wide assortment of seasonal dishes and handcrafted cocktails - best known for its bronzed, grilled quail with pickled cranberries and roasted cauliflower with tahini and lemon. Other restaurants and options to consider: Fishbone’s “alligator voodoo” - farm raised alligator bites, deep fried; and American Coney Islands restaurant for a loose burger with onions with a side of chilli cheese fries. If you’re in the mood for a spicy snack, visit a local grocer for a bag of Better Made “Red Hots” potato chips and wash it down with a Faygo “cream soda” soda, both are made within Detroit. Before you board your flight, be certain to check out Dan Gilbert’s 535,000-square-foot “The Z” parking garagAll ten levels of the structure are decorated out with splashy-colored art installations.ns. At night on the rooftop, take in a breathtaking aspect of the One Detroit Center and Penobscot Building. Or simply, enjoy a beverage in the alley creatively nicknamed “The Belt” under the canopy lights while gazing at seasonally rotating commissioned artwork by some of the best contemporary European and American artists to date. And, be sure to pop your brain inside the Library Street Collective for a fine art exhibition. It’s very obvious that Detroit’s comeback is inevitable from architecture to mass transit (3.3-mile streetcar line from downtown to New Center will be recognized as the QLine $140-million dollar project which is expected to open 2017) And all things relative in the world of invention. Furthermore, it’s vibrant future has been attributed to an influx of small businesses as well as an ever so growing, youthful population of trendsetters within their respective industries, seeking a more affordable style of life. visitdetroit.com 360 MAGAZINE 29 Rolls-Royce Dawn: A Rock Star Ready to Blow! It seems as though the “Holy Trinity of British Rock” (The Beatles, Rolling Stone and our previous cover band, The Who) may become a quartet with RollsRoyce’s newly introduced, Dawn on deck. After all, this glamorous two and a half ton open top cabriolet has all of the qualifications to endorse any youthful entrepreneur as “someone to watch.” By Vaughn Lowery & Anthony Sovinsky 30 360 MAGAZINE 360 MAGAZINE 31 Rolls-Royce has stayed true to their heritage with the assembly of the sensuous, show-stopper Dawn. Prompted by the Rolls-Royce Silver Dawn Drophead Coupe from the late 1940s and early 1950s (only 28 were composed to date), the brand has self-proclaimed the Dawn as the “Sexiest Rolls-Royce Ever to be Built,” and we do not beg to differ - gorgeous with the top up and strikingly beautiful with it down. This super luxury motor car is handcrafted in Britain, comfortable, and rare. The grill of the Dawn is reminiscent of an early 1800s bank vault filled with crispy, new one hundred dollar bills enunciated with striking integrated LED headlamps and adorned by a stainless steel Spirit of Ecstacy emblem. From brain to toe, this attraction is 208.1 inches long, 76.65 inches in width and a height of 59.13 inches with a wheelbase of 122.51 inches. It sits on 21 inches of forged 10-spoke polished chrome wheels. We took in the pleasure to indulge in an omnipresent premier silver exterior with contrasting Mugello red interior complemented by black book matched wood paneling. The dashboard and controls exhibited contemporary veneers accented with a matte metal finishing. With enough leg, knee, and headroom for four passengers, each person is accorded their own individually handcrafted, vented cow hide seat with heating and cooling options. Moreover, every seat in this ambient arena-esque cabin allows you to bask in the sunlight while stainless steel trim wraps back seats for added flash. 32 360 MAGAZINE 360 MAGAZINE 33 If in the mood to peacock, one can silently retract the cover within 22 seconds at speeds up to 31mph. Or with the French stitched roof up, there is ample head room and nearly no wind noise when compared to the slightly more effeminate Bentley Continental GT Convertible. Aesthetics are equally complemented by performance. This 5644lb vehicle is powered by a 6.6L twin-turbo V12 that cranks out 563hp (at 5250 rpm) and 575lb-ft of torque (at 1500 rpm), which propels it 0 to 60 in under 4.7 seconds. This was very evident as we pushed it from Los Angeles, California to the esteemed Carmel Valley’s Bernardus Lodge & Spa. The Dawn handled windy roads with both relaxation and composure - somewhat similar to the BMW 7-series Every time its massive steel frame hugged tight corners, it held its drive composure making it one of most rigid four seaters offered today. The Dawn’s transmission is a “satellite aided” eight speed automatic that uses GPS, featured on a 10.25 inch HD navigation screen and maneuvered with Spirit of Ecstasy rotary controller, to select gears for upcoming hills and turns that allows the Dawn to effortlessly complete any undertaking. We found that the Dawn is best experienced during leisure activities with the top down to discover the opulent interior while boisterously bobbing our heads to today’s top hits on the manually equalized bespoke sound audio system. 34 360 MAGAZINE 360 MAGAZINE 35 Out of all the six models offered by this manufacturer, the Dawn proves to be the new lead vocalist of this subroutine ensemble with the Phantom as manager, Ghost as drummer, and Wraith on electric guitar with skills comparable to Jimi Hendrix. In short, Rolls Royce’s ability to hand carve, construct, and engineer the world’s best cruiser should eventually make them a prospect for the “Rock and Roll Hall of Fame” sooner rather than later. *Earlier this year, the first Dawn to be sold was auctioned away to American collector Julian Movsesian for a hefty $750,000 (base price is around $335,000). The takings from the sale went to a charitable cause and was donated to the Naples Children and Education Foundation where they help support underprivileged children. 36 360 MAGAZINE 360 MAGAZINE 37 Excavating Experience Photography from Leather Archives & Museum, Chicago, IL Groups and organizations often rely on the talents of individuals to encourage participation, education, growth and camaraderie, and a new exhibit opening at the Leather Archives & Museum seeks to unearth the contributions made to Chicagoland area BDSM/leather/kink/fetish communities by people of color. Excavating Experience: The Presence of LGBTQ People of Color in Cook County, IL is a multi-media exhibit, which opened Saturday July 2nd at the LA&M in Rogers Park. Excavating Experience draws upon materials from the museum’s archival holdings, as well as images, artifacts, ephemera and oral histories donated by people of color within Cook County’s BDSM/ leather/fetish/kink communities specifically for this exhibit. Focusing mainly on participation by people of color in clubs, events and organizations, the LA&M exhibit’s goal is to both inspire and to encourage participation. 38 360 MAGAZINE 360 MAGAZINE 39 “This exhibition will serve as a small glimpse into the myriad ways LGBTQ people of color have contributed to the leather community in Cook County,” says Alisa Swindell, curator of the Excavating Experience exhibit. “From forming organizations to being representatives as titleholders to the mere fact of being present, these people have helped to make this community what it is.” The Leather Archives & Museum–which is celebrating its 25th anniversary this fall –has been repeatedly named to popular offbeat tourist destination lists (Chicagoist, RoadTrippers, WBEZ-FM NPR and more), and acts as a community hub for adult programming throughout the year, welcoming locals and tourists alike. Lectures, screenings and events at the museum are diverse in nature, and LA&M programming–such as the Excavating Experience exhibit–seeks to reflect contributions from everyone involved within the BDSM/leather/fetish/kink communities. 40 360 MAGAZINE “Practicing kink is universally a part of sexual exploration,” says LA&M Executive Director Rick Storer. “The LA&M is excited for this exhibit to show how people of color in Chicagoland have practiced and performed leather/fetish sex, and how they have built community around it.” Storer says that exhibits like this one are critical to the core LA&M mission, and that contributions to BDSM/leather/ fetish/kink communities by people of color must be visible. Swindell agrees, reiterating that the twin goals of the Excavating Experience exhibit are to inspire and to encourage participation. “We hope that this exhibition will encourage more people of color in the community to share their history with the LA&M.” Excavating Experience: The Presence of LGBTQ People of Color in Cook County, IL runs from July 2nd, 2016 to January 8th, 2017 at the Leather Archives & Museum, 6418 N. Greenview Avenue in Chicago. This exhibit is made possible through a grant from the LGBT Fund of the Chicago Community Trust. leatherarchives.org 360 MAGAZINE 41 2016 Jaguar XJL Portfolio AWD: A Mighty Fine Ride Shin Takei 42 360 MAGAZINE In its current guise, the XJ series has been around since 2009 and refined each year until the present. A Jaguar XJL is typically a chauffeur driven car in the UK with the extended wheelbase of almost 5 inches giving executives, diplomats, celebrities, rock stars and basics ample legroom to relax and be comfortable in the back. In the U.S., it may be the father or mother who chauffeurs children, relatives, or inlaws in the back. The ride is smooth, stable, and comfortable thanks to the long-wheelbase and all-wheel drive. We didn’t feel the need for more power or torque, and the EPA/DOT combined fuel economy of 20mpg is fairly good for a car this size. After all it is a Jaguar. When pressed the car handles it quite well and when pushed into spirited driving, it completely acts like a Jaguar should. No drama here. When in Drive, throttle reaction is a bit slow, not unlike a turbo-lag, but in S-Mode everything happens much faster and smoother which is why we always drove it that way. 44 360 MAGAZINE 360 MAGAZINE 45 So sit in the back seat, connect your smart phone and watch a movie, or listen to your favorite music while you are driven around town in luxury and comfort in the 2016 Jaguar XJL Portfolio AWD Sedan. Vaughn Lowery As of late, we chose the slightly refreshed 2016 Infiniti QX60 for a spell in the Detroit Metropolitan Area. To our surprise the overall styling of the automobile was quite compelling. Last year’s edition seemed to be a number reminiscent of a minivan. Still, the updated model seemed to be strikingly more impressive with its menacing eyes and baleful brow - constructed by the newly configured bi-xenon headlamps, daytime running LED lamps, front LED fog lamps, pronounced grill and underbody spoiler - fabricating a ferocious front. 54 360 MAGAZINE 360 MAGAZINE 55 This model’s performance and suspension felt German-like. You really become one with the road largely in character to the acoustic glass (minimizing high frequency noise) in tandem with the CVT (continuous various transmission), creating a more insulated and seamless drive composure. On the other hand, the steering wasn’t as tight as her sister sedan, the Q50, but totally felt like we were able to harness her power with equal fuel economy (22 combined mpg - 19 for city and 26 for Hwy). As most majestic creatures, we assumed the body would not provide as much interior space. Boy were we wrong! We gained access into the cabin by jolting over the illuminated kick blades into a world quite foreign in the category of crossover - pure sensuous luxury. All appointments were exquisite: quilted Java seats with white stitching all around (including the bolt), polished veneers, maple accents, 7” touch screen infotainment system (allowed us to toggle between audio inputs); and the 360 camera views (which come in handy when 3rd row headrests obstruct much of the scene in the back windshield). The heated steering wheel had several useful controls: voice activation, back button and intelligent cruise control. One can choose the distance from another vehicle with Distance Control Assist. And of course, the Lane Departure Prevention and Lane Warning Assist, practically, drove this auto on lengthier excursions. The driver seat was comfy and snug with the two-way lumbar support (both front seats have climate controls while second-row has heated). Furthermore, cargo loading was effortless with a power operated tailgate combined with a button operated retractable third row. Another reason why this is one of the manufacturer’s best sellers is the second-row passenger seat tilts and slides with a child seat in lieu. Its overall body bears the reflection of an oversized sedan and possesses mystical reptilian traits. The shark fin antenna coupled with the roof rails gives the silhouette of a bearded dragon with horns. LED side mirror signal indicators glow like yellow diamond studs on its frilled ears. The rear bumper and back tailgate seem to be succinct with its head - integrated spoiler, and the hatch with power lift function features chrome finishers. The claws came in the figure of 20” wheels with 15-spoke aluminum alloy wheels which firmly gripped the road. The pearl white paint made the vehicle a scale-like presence on the road shimmering with iridescence as the sunshine shone on her skin. For once this seven-passenger, third-row family vehicle had a more aggressive posture causing numerous heads to turn while parked or in tow. Her magical wings were propelled with the exact power train as her predecessor, a 3.5L, V6 with 265hp and 248lbft of torque. As we glided by others on the highway with AWD, she was firmly planted. 56 360 MAGAZINE 360 MAGAZINE 57 With such a lush interior, we decided to venture out to Frankenmuth, Michigan the home of Bronner’s Christmas Wonderland, which bills itself as “the World’s Largest Christmas Store.” As we pulled into Little Bravaria’s pastoral villages, medieval towns and ornate castles, we felt right at home inside of this whimsical region. After touching base with another slayer for a chicken dinner feast parallel to a tender slice of rhubarb pie, we decided to wait off traffic by indulging in the theatre package (wireless headphones, remote, 8” touch display in back of front seat headrests), while charging smart devices in the second and third row with ample USB ports. For additional space in the second row, we were able to scoot back about 6 inches and slightly recline. Since the moonroof added a tad glare on the monitors, we decided to retract the power sunshade. In short, the 2016 Infiniti QX60 is the consummate choice for a millennial who is ready to begin a family. It delivers all of the amenities needed to keep their modern lifestyle in motion technology, ergonomics and fuel economy. *Starting price is around $42,600. Ready to pack your suitcase and wave goodbye to your cubicle? Here are our top suggestions for lodging, food, drinks, and a side of Arkansas history to complete the experience. 64 360 MAGAZINE 360 MAGAZINE 65 Hot Springs National Park comes with plenty of hotels and B&B’s, fit for budget travelers, luxury lovers and everyone in between. Hotel Hot Springs & Spa, formerly known as the Austin Convention Hotel & Spa is an ideal choice if you want easy access to the city. Although, under complete renovation, the hotel, pleasantly, offers glimpses of a chic and relaxing environment. Close to Historic Downtown Hot Springs, highlights of the soonto-be finished hotel are 196 newly renovated and remodeled guest rooms. Further options include a fresh, hot breakfast, new pool and fitness center, shuttle service to popular attractions, and many more. For a time traveler’s experience, look no further than The Arlington Resort Hotel & Spa. Established in 1875 with 120 guest rooms, it quickly rose to fame in the coming decades. After a catastrophic fire burned down the entire building, Arlington reopened its doors on December 31st, 1924 and has been in business ever since. From the age of gangster squads and smuggled liquor up until now, it has housed visitors such as Al Capone in suite 443, Babe Ruth; Franklin Roosevelt, Harry Truman, George H. W. Bush, and Bill Clinton just to name a few. Experience more of Hot Springs culture with Oaklawn Park horse racing and year-round fun activities. First opened in 1904, Oaklawn is the only sports franchise in America still run by the family that started it all. Their newly expanded gaming area is a risk taker’s paradise. Enjoy the live Blackjack and Poker room, Video Poker, Roulette, and hundreds of other amusements. It wasn’t always fun and games. Until 1967 the state of Arkansas was the largest illegal money-making scene in the country. 66 360 MAGAZINE Curious about the oldest tourist attraction in Arkansas? Then the Alligator Farm, which opened in 1902, is a must-see. Initially home to more than 1500 alligators from Mississippi and a “merman” in their marine museum, the farm soon became a hit among visitors. One such noteworthy mention happens to be Babe Ruth who bought a small alligator as memorabilia on his way back to Boston. Fast forward to the 21st century, the merman days are gone and alligators can’t be purchased anymore, but the Arkansas Alligator Farm and Petting Zoo, as it is known today, added deer, emu, pygmy goats, ponies and sheep to its proud family. Besides Hot Spring’s rare history, downtown offers an array of dining options at vibrant small businesses including McClard’s Barbeque, The Pancake Shop, and DeLuca’s Pizzeria. DeLuca’s is run by Anthony Valinoti who, having been trained in Naples, Italy, delivers scrumptious Napoletana pizzas to delight locals and travelers alike. Filling up on these heavenly pizzas sometimes calls for a beer or two. The thirsty wanderer is in for a treat with Superior Bathhouse Brewery and Distillery. What sets this brewery apart from all others is its unique formula which takes advantage of the 144 degree spring water found exclusively in Hot Springs. Owner and maker, Rose Schweikhart, inspired by various European beers decided to launch her own beer company to recreate these traditional styles. Rose established her company in 2011 and set her eyes on a historic former-bathhouse in the heart of Hot Springs National Park. After a grueling two-year negotiation process with the federal government, Rose received the lease on the building. Construction began in 2013, and as they say, the rest is history. Today, “Rose and the Superior Bathhouse brewing team crank out a constant stream of new beer from the original to the outlandish,” writes Michelle Mouton Harrison, Event Coordinator at Superior Bathhouse Brewery. “Rose considers beer to be a creative process. Like the varied timbers and dynamics one can coax from a tuba, grains, hops, and yeast offer an endless creative pallet,” shares Harrison. 360 MAGAZINE 67 Of course, visiting Hot Springs, Arkansas wouldn’t be complete without enjoying its natural beauty. Find your adventure with guided hikes, boat tours, and camping opportunities located throughout the park. Only staying for the weekend? Garvan Woodland Gardens at the University of Arkansas is the perfect fit. Coming from the city, this gorgeous botanical garden is literally a breath of fresh air. Make sure to stop by Anthony Chapel, a rare architectural gem. Constructed from nearly six-story high yellow pine columns and beams with massive floor-to-ceiling glass walls, it creates a marvelous sight. No wonder it is also listed as one of the top wedding destinations in the United States. If drinking beer made from thermal water doesn’t sound appealing, opt for a more traditional hot springs experience. Quapaw Baths and Spa pampers visitors with unique spa packages. While there, grab a healthy bite at their café and shop the spa boutique for a take-home treat. 68 360 MAGAZINE 360 MAGAZINE 69 For more romantic and relaxing getaways, Lookout Point Lakeside Inn is at your service. Unlike its revivals, the E-class and 5-Series, the Jaguar XF’s standard package out performs with pinpoint steering and underprices at around $72,285. This is the ultimate cruiser car. Vaughn Lowery 72 360 MAGAZINE 360 MAGAZINE 73 Shorter and lower than its predecessor, it has a slightly longer wheelbase and is substantially lighter. Unlike most models in the Jaguar kingdom, the new generation seems to be enjoying aluminum frames and panels. XF is fabricated with a 75% aluminum skeleton making the weight distribution close to 50/50. This supercharged V6 3.0L engine has about 340hp and 332lbft torque gaining speeds of 0-60 close to 5.0 seconds. 74 360 MAGAZINE With a refined waistline and shoulders, the front grill seems to remain in tune with the overall elegant and sporty heritage of the brand. The gorgeous silhouettes have integrated front LED headlamps which save more energy than a traditional Xenon light. They are arguably brighter, adding additional symmetry to their overall clean lines, especially at night. The boot of this vehicle is a tad underwhelming, but the power trunk’s open and close feature is extremely convenient for the busiest traveler on the go. Once you open the driver door, the soft close option makes the door feel heavy and meaty like a traditional German vehicle. 360 MAGAZINE 75 The British had some plans to be distinctive this time around with 19” wheels, rear camera, blind spot and driver condition monitor for safety, 380 Watt Meridian radio, laser heads-up display, illuminated foot plates, 10 color ambient lighting, fine grain leather, rich veneers, textured aluminum, 8” touchscreen controls and navigation, electric rear sunblind, manual back side window blinds, a generous moon roof and 4 seat climate zone. An extremely mature and sophisticated cabin with fresh lines engulf driver and passengers. Items that remain the same are the retractable hockey-puc-like rotary shift and front vents in dashboard. The interior is flush and effortless. There is no room for a crumb, lint, or a piece of hair. Other options that our test model contained were parallel and perpendicular parking assist, lane departure, and traffic sign recognition. The back also had ample leg, head, and knee room. Passengers close to 6 ft or taller will most likely enjoy riding upfront or driving. Although it shares the same standard power plant as the F-Type, the growl is much more muted. However, just like its spunky little sister, the throttle and transmission can be controlled from the touchscreen tailoring the driver experience to your liking. Dynamic and sport modes are highly recommended making the ride stiffer and better while cornering. What makes the drive composure so evident are the double wishbone suspension upfront and the integral link suspension on the back wheels which mimic an AWD experience in this RWD model allowing the car to easily adapt to almost any terrain. 76 360 MAGAZINE 360 MAGAZINE 77 In short, this is one of the most practical sport sedans in its class due largely to its poise, price and efficiency (approximately 24mpg combined city/hwy or 4.2 gallons per 100 miles). Want something more agile and aggressive? Additional drive and power trains are rolling out soon including a supercharged V8 and a 180-hp 2.0-liter turbodiesel. After spending the long, cold winter cooped up indoors- where we may have packed on those few extra pounds we like to call winter weight- the arrival of shorts, tank tops, and bathing suit have managed to sneak up and motivate us to knock off excessive pounds. I know I know I can speak for myself and I am sure for a few of you, when I say that I am sick of looking at that wall in front of my treadmill and exercise bike and I now want to take my exercise outside! There are many added benefits to an outdoor workout. Some include the production of vitamin D3 when the sunlight hits one’s skin, which is important to bone health and metabolic function, decreased depression, anger, and tension due to enjoying ones workout outside and saving money on those monthly gym memberships. On the other hand it is important to remember that exercising in the heat, if you are not prepared, can be dangerous. Below are some tips to remember to ensure a safe workout when exercising outside this summer. Prehydate, Hydrate and Rehydrate- Our bodies crave water! This becomes, especially true during periods of high intensity activity or extended heat exposure. Water consumption should begin 72 hours before activity by drinking six to eight, 8-ounce glasses of water per day. During activity, one should drink six ounces of fluid (preferably water) every 15 minutes and should then rehydrate following activity with 32 ounces of liquid per 1 pound of fluid loss. 102 360 MAGAZINE Use Sunscreen- Although the sun has great benefits, it can be dangerous if we don’t apply sunscreen understand that the Sun Protection Factor (SPF) is a crucia to ensure correct application. The SPF rating is a measure of the fraction of sunburn-producing UV rays that will reach the skin. For example, SPF 30 means that 1/30th of the burning radiation will reach the skin. To determine the effectiveness of sunscreen multiply the SPF factor by the length of time it takes for an individual to burn without sunscreen. It is also important to remember that the higher the number on the sunscreen doesn’t mean that it will remain on the skin any longer than the SPF with a lower number and it must be continually applied as directed. Clothing choice- One should wear loose fitted, light weight and light colored clothing when exercising in the sun. The light color will help reflect the sun, the light weight material will aid in quick evaporation of sweat and the loose fit will allow for air to circulate between the skin and the material. Time of day- If possible, complete all strenuous exercise in the morning or the evening. The sun is strongest from 11 a.m. until about 3 p.m., so unless you are training for an event that will take place during the mid-afternoon heat avoid training during those times. Exercising outside can be great, but not if we ignore what our bodies are telling us. Emergency rooms and physicians offices fill up every year with people who weren’t exercising safely in the heat and then end up with dehydration, heat exhaustion or heat stroke. You will have a summer filled with succesful workouts by listening to your body and following the tips above. And, as a young girl, I always loved to draw, sketch, and make fashion sketches. Fashion is always changing and always growing, and always beating itself every single day. I would love to explore all the different areas of that,” describes Carpenter, who “took so much from my sisters” on fashion and beauty when growing up (“Growing up with them is mayhem. It’s a lot of feelings, it’s a lot of emotions, and it’s a lot of estrogen”). Furthermore, she is getting ready for her second album release (due out late this year) as the lead single “Smoke and Fire” came out in February. “I’ve written a lot of songs based on true personal experiences, but I think when it comes to this subject, it relates to so many people if not everybody, and if not now, then in the future, it will relate to everybody. It’s just something that we all go through, and it’s really cool that I was able to connect to my audience on a more universal level. Not only that, but it was just like, I got to sing a song that had all the soul that I had been dying to get out of my system for a very long time so it’s a very special song to me,” she confidently explains of the fiery anthem. “We wrote the chorus and the verse on the first night, and then, a couple months later, we finished the song in New York City.” 112 360 MAGAZINE 360 MAGAZINE 113 White Trench Coat: House of CB White Skirt: stylestalker Turtleneck: Theory Pumps: Jimmy Choo Carpenter says that the album focuses on “the universal subjects of real-life people interactions and feelings, and inspirational/motivational subjects. Music speaks for itself in the music so the lyrics are really just the icing on the cake and how you tell the story,” she continues. “We all have stories for reason, and if we keep them to ourselves, I don’t feel they would help anybody. There are a lot of things that people go through, and maybe they don’t know how to get through it, and maybe you do, and if you have some sort of knowledge or power, share with the world.” In late April, moreover, she performed at an American Red Cross event. “That was beautiful, very, very incredible that I was honored to perform that, but there are gonna be so many great causes and charities that I’ve been lucky enough to support and be a part of this year,” she shares. “Music is such a strong thing in our lives that can really help us through anything. And, I try to get the most positive messages that I can get to my fans but not even just positivity, it’s also just inspiration in the way that you can do anything that you put your mind to. Music is such a diverse thing. It truly is – it’s like another language that we all speak somewhere inside of us, so it’s a great way to get your messages across.” sabrinacarpenter.com 114 360 MAGAZINE 360 MAGAZINE 115 IN TOUCH WITH NATURE FLOATWING ® Superior Life Energy Orgonite pyramids help balance and protect the mind, body and spirit. With a fixed width of 6 metres and lengths ranging from 10 to 18 metres, the possibilities are almost endless. Whether you want a cosy studio or a fully furnished three-bedroom house, the freedom of nature is on your doorstep. Whether you choose to use the floating home as a base camp for numerous outdoor activities such as sailing, paddling, water skiing or fishing, or simply to relax, you’re guaranteed a great living experience. Its facilities include a fully equipped kitchen for everyday use, heat pump and AC generator, a barbecue on the upper terrace for sunny days and a wine cellar and pellet stove to keep you warm on cold days. The modular design of the house means that all its components, including equipment and furniture, can be easily stored in two standard containers and shipped to almost anywhere on the planet. MOBILITY With two small outboard motors, you can take your time to enjoy the trip at a moderate speed of three knots and wake up in a different place every day. AUTONOMY When charged, the house is self-sufficient for at least seven days. It produces up to 80% of its annual energy needs (100% for over six months). Tel Aviv’s pristine shoreline is bordered on one side by the exquisite Mediterranean and on the other by a modern city known for its excellent restaurants, diverse population, and a lively night scene. ECO-CONSCIOUSNESS It has been designed with low environmentally impactful materials and technologies that reduce its carbon footprint and lower its energy needs. It has a compact activated sludge wastewater treatment plant. EQUIPMENT LEVELS LEVEL 1 The floating house is tied to the bank and has fixed connections to municipal networks. Autonomy and mobility are secondary to the benefits of comfort and price. There is no need for motorisation. Thermal and photovoltaic solar panels are not essential but may exist as with any other housing. LEVEL 2 The floating house gains autonomy and mobility. It has its own motorisation which provides you with moderate mobility (3 knots) and reasonable energy autonomy (5 m² of solar panels and 23 m² of photovoltaic panels) with a solar sourced energy component of around 65% across the annual cycle, and 100% for four months of the year. The water supply and wastewater are stored in their own tanks with capacity for a 7-day stay. LEVEL 3 The floating house is endowed with a more consistent battery of solar panels (31 m²) and a pellet stove. Excluding mobility, energy autonomy now stands at 85% across the annual cycle, and at 100% for 6 months. The floating house also now has a wastewater treatment plant (WWTP), including primary and secondary treatment by activated sludge. LEVEL 4 (EXPERIMENTAL) GENERAL CHARACTERISTICS PLATFORM LENGTH (LOA) PLATFORM WIDTH WATERLINE LENGTH (LWL) BEAM TOTAL HEIGHT DRAUGHT CEILING HEIGHT INTERIOR AREA NUMBER OF BEDROOMS 10 m to 18 m 6m 7 m to 15 m 4m 5.20 m 0.60 m 2.40 m 28 m² to 52 m² 0 to 3 double bedrooms The WWTP now includes advanced tertiary treatment by ceramic membrane filtration that allows for final disposal into the water below under completely sanitary conditions (EEC Directive 91/271). Onboard water storage is only for food preparation and personal hygiene. The remaining water needs (cisterns, outdoor hoses, cleaning, etc.) are addressed through direct uptake from the watercourse and appropriate treatment through a mini supply water treatment plant. For six months of the year, between April and September, the floating house does not need any kind of refuelling or maintenance. This period of autonomy can be extended to one year with just some stored fuel and bags of pellets. The evening’s event marked the first time that the Centenario was on display to U.S. clients since its debut at the 2016 Geneva Motor Show. The Petersen Automotive Museum provided the perfect backdrop to highlight Lamborghini’s iconic heritage with an exciting nod to its fast tracking future. “This car is the ultimate expression of Automobili Lamborghini,” said Alessandro Farmeschi, Automobili Lamborghini America Chief Operating Officer. “The Centenario marks what would have been the 100th birthday of Ferruccio Lamborghini and is a fitting tribute to our company’s founder. Its cutting design showcases the latest technologies that give our super sports cars such a competitive edge.” The Centenario features an all-carbon-fiber body available in either an exposed or painted finish showcasing the perfect attention to detail Lamborghinis are known for. With its body panels exposed, the beauty of Lamborghini’s carbon fiber mastery is undeniable. Each intersection of the woven material catches light at a slightly different angle, setting the car off with an incredible degree of visual depth. 144 360 MAGAZINE 360 MAGAZINE 145 Over the course of its production, a total of 20 coupes and 20 roadsters will be delivered to clients. In addition to breaking new ground in body styling and material composition for the brand, this car is also the first Lamborghini to use all-wheel steering to enhance agility at low speeds and offer improved stability at high speeds. The rear wheels are able to turn in the opposite direction of the front axle to create a virtual reduction in the wheelbase or to rotate with the front wheels for the opposite effect. Future Centenario owners may choose from a long list of customization options for the car that will allow each unit to be totally personalized, but a touch screen with connected capability is one feature that will come with every model regardless of equipment specification. For the first time ever, the touch screen – mounted in the center console – brings Internet connectivity to the world of Lamborghini. Aerodynamics were an essential consideration in the development of this car. During that process, Lamborghini’s engineers chose to use an adjustable rear wing that actively adapts to vehicle speed in order to provide optimal downforce as conditions demand. Aerodynamic inlets made of several fins characterize both the front and rear of the car as part of a design reminiscent of sports cars sold in the 1970s. Like every other piece of the car’s design, those inlets also enhance vehicle performance by contributing to aerodynamic downforce, improving airflow to the rear radiators and delivering optimized cooling. Purity of design is a Lamborghini hallmark that harkens back to some of its earliest designs. This year, the brand celebrates the 50th anniversary of Miura, which is largely credited as the world’s first mid-engine supercar and arguably one of the most beautiful automobiles in history. As a result, many of the notable design cues including the large side air intakes sitting behind the doors on the Centenario are a direct reflection of its predecessor. The Centenario takes performance to a new level. Its dry weight is only 3,351 lbs, yet it houses the most powerful engine in Lamborghini history. The 6.5-liter naturally aspirated V12 creates 770 horsepower capable of propelling the car from 0-60 mph in only 2.7 seconds toward a top speed in excess of 217 mph. Further adding to the car’s performance credentials, it is also fitted with Lamborghini’s dynamic steering system to offer an especially quick turn-in feel to the driver while maintaining a sense of control. That tight sense of handling capability is also due to the car’s standard magneto rheological damping system that can react to changing road conditions in an instant.
