0.0 - Start of Highway 101
Hwy 101 from Astoria to the
California state line is part of our national
scenic heritage. Mile 0 is the southern
end of the Astoria–Megler Bridge. Over
4 miles long, this bridge is the longest
continuous three-span, through-truss
bridge in the world. Construction began
in 1962 and was completed in 1966. This
bridge completed Hwy 101 and made it an
unbroken link between the Canadian and
Mexican borders. The city of Astoria lies
mostly upriver from milepost 0.
VisitTheOregonCoast. com
0.0 - Astoria (ZIP 97103)
The written history of the area dates
to 1792, when Robert Gray in his small
ship, Columbia Rediviva, entered and
named the river. Lewis and Clark’s expedition of 1804–1806 established the new
nation’s claim to the Pacific Northwest.
The oldest American settlement west of
the Rockies, Astoria offers more points
of historical interest than any other city
on the Oregon Coast. Intriguing historical museums include Flavel House
(not wheelchair-accessible), Heritage
Museum, and Uppertown Firefighters
Museum.
Tapiola Park is Astoria’s newest
attraction, with miniature replicas of the
area’s greatest sites and a state-of-the-art
skateboard facility.
A great view can be had from the
Sixth Street Viewing Platform along the
Riverwalk Trail. The visitor information
center is on West Marine Drive, about
1/2 mile east of the Astoria–Megler
Bridge.

Coxcomb Hill. The 125-foot Astoria

The visitor information center
(503-861-1031) sits at 143 S Hwy 101 at
the edge of Youngs Bay Shopping Center.
A model lighthouse sits in Lighthouse
Park in Warrenton. At the end of the
road is Fort Stevens, the United States’
major defense for the mouth of the
Columbia from the Civil War until the
end of World War II. The fort’s military
purpose has ended, but the remains of the
installation make a fascinating historic
center. You can visit a museum and tour
the old batteries on foot or in a vehicle.
Old Fort Stevens is part of Fort Stevens
State Park. Camping here is popular, and
reservations should be made. Enjoy miles

Watch along this stretch of coast for
“Terrible Tilly” 1.2 miles offshore. The
lighthouse operated from 1880 until
decommissioned in 1957. It is now a private columbarium. And the rocky island
has been a wildlife refuge since 1994.
28.0 - Ecola State Park
The park offers dramatic views of the
coastline and Haystack Rock. In 1806,
Captain William Clark of the Lewis and
Clark expedition named a creek in this
area Ecola Creek, based on the Chinook
Indian word for whale, ekoli. The 1300acre park includes magnificent ocean
frontage extending from the northern
edge of Cannon Beach to Indian Beach.
The Lewis and Clark National Historic
Trail, also designated as a segment of the
Oregon Coast Trail, extends 8 miles from
Cannon Beach to Seaside and follows
some of the same route used by Captain
Clark. The park road extends 2 miles
north of Cannon Beach with access to
many picnic areas, viewpoints, and two
beaches. Day-use fee.

Cannon Beach, OR
14 Oregon Coast Mile-by-Mile Guide 2009–2010
Extending 4 miles along a stunning
stretch of beach, Cannon Beach offers a
breathtaking view around every corner.
The town (named for a cannon
that washed up on the beach in 1846)
has worked hard to preserve its natural
beauty. The city doesn’t specify materials, but many people use shingle siding,
making the buildings compatible with
the character and setting of the city. The
retail area is an impressive collection of
smart shops, all tastefully landscaped and
some with tranquil courtyards—no obtrusive big-box stores here.
NorthwestMagazines.com
North Coast: 30.5–43.0
The most popular annual event
in Cannon Beach is the Sandcastle
Contest, scheduled each year in June.
The town celebrates music and art during the Stormy Weather Arts Festival,
the first full weekend of November. And
Haystack Holidays has many activities
including wreath-making and caroling.

30.5 - Cannon Beach South Access
Haystack Rock, part of Oregon Islands
National Wildlife Refuge and the unofficial
symbol of Cannon Beach, lies just south.
Haystack Rock is home to many species of
nesting birds. Between April and August,
tufted puffins abound. Do not disturb either
the birds or marine life in tide pools. These
marine gardens are protected by the state.

Tolovana Park is adjacent to Cannon

33.7 - Hug Point SRS
The old road was treacherous with
travelers having to hug the rock to get

during high tides. Visitors can explore
tidal caves, hike to a waterfall, and investigate the remains of the old roadbed.

42.8 - Neahkahnie Beach
Trails lead to the summit from this
popular beach at the base of Neahkahnie
Mountain. Stories of buried treasure
arose more than two centuries ago when,
according to legend, a badly crippled,
treasure-rich Spanish galleon strayed off
course and was wrecked on the beach.
Native Indians said the men from the
“huge canoe” carried boxes from the
wreck and buried them at the foot of the
mountain. No one has ever found the
treasure, but many artifacts, including a
wine cup and beeswax, have been found.
43.0 - Manzanita (ZIP 97130)
This secluded seaside community of

Nehalem Bay State Park extends along
the ocean for more than a mile. A horse
outfitter operates in the park during
spring break and the summer months,
offering horse rides on the beach.

During World War II, blimps patrolled
out of Tillamook to guard against enemy
submarines. According to the Guinness
Book of Records, the two hangars that
housed them were the largest wooden
clear-span structures ever built. 
Sand Lake is a natural estuary opening on the ocean. It is so flat that you can
watch the incoming tide move quickly
across dry sand. The U.S. Forest Service
operates three places to camp here—East
Dunes, West Winds, and Sandbeach. All
three are open year-round.

34.1 - Cape Kiwanda Parks
There are two Cape Kiwanda parks.
Tillamook County Park  includes the
parking lot and a wheelchair-accessible
ocean-viewing deck; Cape Kiwanda State
Natural Area contains the cape itself.
The action of wind and waves on the
sandstone that forms the cape has created an interesting headland, beautiful to
look at from the beach but dangerous to
explore on foot.
34.2 - Pacific City (ZIP 97135)
Pacific City is famous for its dory
boats that are launched directly into the
surf, celebrated every year with the Dory
Days festivities during the third weekend
in July. Pacific City also has two rivers for
fishing. You’ll find several good restaurants, gift shops, and galleries.

streams in the state.
94.3 - Oretown Viewpoint
An easily accessed pullout with a great
view of the beach toward Neskowin.
97.7 - Neskowin (ZIP 97149)
Neskowin is a mostly residential
community by the mouth of Neskowin
Creek. The arts are represented by an art
gallery, the Neskowin Chamber Music
Series, and the nearby Sitka Center for
the Arts and Ecology at Cascade Head.
Neskowin Beach State Wayside faces

waves are on the north side of the cape.
