Programme () - The Edinburgh International
#EDTVFEST
Official Programme sponsored by
21-23 August 2014
Over the past two years Crime + InvestigationTM has commissioned over 100
hours of UK original content, with hit series including: Crimes That Shook
Britain, Nightmare In Suburbia and Britain’s Darkest Taboos. This makes CI
one of the biggest commissioners of crime content in the UK. The new series
of Crimes That Shook Britain launches this August on CI, investigating some
of the UK’s most shocking and significant cases that include Jimmy Savile,
Lee Rigby, Rose West and The Marchioness disaster.
Recent Emmy-nominated docu-drama series The World Wars is an epic look at
three decades of war. The story is told from the perspective of the most iconic
figures of World War Two, including Mussolini, Hitler, Patton and Churchill,
whose views were forged over 20 years earlier on the battlefields of World
War One. They went on to command a world on the brink of disaster.
This six part programme has its UK premiere this September on H2®.
Pawn Stars UK scoops up hundreds of years of historical riches as it puts
an English spin on the massive global hit HISTORY® series Pawn Stars.
This successful UK commission follows the antics of Mark Manning
(aka Big Mark) and his team from Regal Pawn in Chester, who will be
returning to HISTORY this coming season.
Enter Jennifer Ellison’s explosive world of competitive dance. Dance Mums with
Jennifer Ellison is the first format adaptation for A+E Networks of its hit US show
Dance Moms, featuring a mix of talented kids and larger than life personalities.
This eight-part series has its UK premiere this autumn on Lifetime®.

Hello. Your friends
at Channel 4 here.
Just to draw your
attention to the
fact that we’re
sponsoring the press room
again this year. This means
we will be providing tea and
coffee, treats, lunch and
something called a hangover
kit*. Though why a bunch
of journalists on a visit to
Scotland would need such a
thing is anyone’s guess. The
room will be thoughtfully
and attractively decorated to
give it character and make
it feel like home (provided
your home is decorated with
a Channel 4 logo scrawled
in marker pen, some
Countdown-themed mugs,
and a bloke from the news
desk asleep in the corner).
Anyway, please be sure not to
let this largesse influence your
opinions or attitudes towards
Channel 4. Oh no. That would
be awful.
*Hangover kit consists
of Himalayan meltwater,
Beluga caviar, Frazzles, and
a full body rubdown from a
Hollyoaks cast member of
your choice.

39th in its long illustrious history,
and my 4th – and final – Festival
as Executive Chair.
Thank you for buying your
delegate pass. We’re a charitable
organisation, so your pass will
have helped to provide someone with a place on one
of our training schemes. The Network offers people
their first taste of television via masterclasses, and
Ones to Watch recognises and nurtures upcoming
diverse talent. This year, over 30% of people on both
schemes are from Black, Asian or Minority Ethnic
backgrounds.
I also got my first taste for television at Edinburgh.
I’d wangled my way to a delegate pass as a baby
researcher in the BBC Features department because
someone more senior dropped out at the last minute.
I knew no-one here, although everyone seemed to
know everyone else – or, at least, everyone knew
Alan Yentob. But I sat on my own at the back of every
session and was struck again and again by the spirit
and passion of every platform speaker. Television, it
seemed, was full of impressively creative people who
loved what they did – so much so that they willingly
spent their Bank Holiday arguing about the future
direction of their industry. I was hooked.
I’ve been to God knows how many Edinburgh TV
festivals since then. And I’m always here with a certain
kind of thrill (as well as a certain kind of hangover). It
deliberately isn’t called a TV Conference – it’s a TV
Festival and a three-day celebration; it’s a networking
event, and it’s a place where provocation can lead
to policy; it’s where ministers rub shoulders with
producers, and where trainees meet executives.
There’s simply nowhere like it.
I have many glorious Edinburgh memories: Kevin
Spacey dad-dancing last year at the post MacTaggart
party, Robert Peston and James Murdoch swearing
at each other (and over me, as I sat between them)
at the MacTaggart dinner; Peter Fincham and Tim
Hincks’ band making their first appearance as The
Overnights at TV’s Got Talent (where, let’s not forget,
they were beaten by a girl who sang with her mouth
shut); Eric Schmidt promising us all we had nothing
to fear from Google; Vince Gilligan holding a packed
room spellbound; Ant and Dec turning up at the
George and getting sucked into a Scottish wedding,
the 2012 Olympics closing session which reduced
advisory chair Kenton Allen to tears, and the amazing
Alex Crawford talking to us all live from a fallen Tripoli.
I want to thank everyone who has helped these
past four years by working much harder than me: my
four Advisory Chairs, including, of course, this year’s
whirlwind dynamo, Melanie Leach; our new Festival
Director Lisa Campbell and the full-time Festival
team, and all my executive committee members, for
consistently attending long meetings and putting up
with cold tortilla chips.
Chris Shaw is taking over from me as Executive
Chair and I’m very glad to be handing it over to such a
loyal friend of the festival. I know he will do a brilliant
job – and he will certainly do it wearing much more
sensible shoes.
Have a great Festival.

THE FESTIVAL APP
introduction
Mel Leach is the 2014
Advisory Chair of The
Guardian Edinburgh
International Television
Festival and Chief
Executive of Twofour
Group. Mel has led the
Advisory Committee over
the past 12 months to
produce the sessions at
this year’s Festival.
A
huge welcome to this year’s TV
Festival, and what a year it’s been
– with Viacom set to acquire
Channel 5; Shine and Endemol
on the brink of a joint venture; Love falling
for Sky; and All3Media selling to Discovery
and Liberty Global. This unprecedented
consolidation has seen the “tectonic
plates moving” to such an extent the
BBC’s decided its production quotas are
no longer fit for purpose. Find out exactly
what that means for the industry in one
of our most important sessions in recent
years, BBC: The New SuperIndie?
Mel Leach
And as the BBC examines in-house,
Channel 4 has also been turning its
attention to the supply chain with the announcement
of a £20m growth fund set up to invest in mediumsized Indies. Expect to hear more about that in David
Abraham’s highly-anticipated MacTaggart Lecture.
The business of creativity sits at the heart of both
sessions and is a theme that runs throughout this
year’s schedule. In The Minority Report: Is TV Racist?
ABC’s Keli Lee has flown in to argue the business case
for diversity with the people who really can deliver
change. Ash Atalla will chair what promises to be a
heated debate.
Equally controversial was last year’s survey that
shone a light on the behaviour of broadcasters – but
has anything changed? Find out in the must-attend
session, We Still Need to Talk About Commissioning.
And it wouldn’t be fair if we didn’t ask the same of the
suppliers. How To Be A Better Indie has surveyed the
freelance community and the commissioners to reveal
the best and the worst practices across the UK’s
Production Companies. A slightly risky session for me
given the day job…
But in fairness, it’s nowhere near as risky as
letting Keith Lemon into your lavatory. For this year’s
Edinburgh Special, Controller Through the Keyhole
6
has snuck behind some of the most closely-guarded
front doors in British telly. All you have to do is guess
whose knicker drawer is whose.
And the entertainment doesn’t end there. Cast
and creatives from the Golden Globe-winning Game
Of Thrones will join HBO President of Programming
Michael Lombardo in an eagerly-anticipated
Masterclass; star of ITV1’s forthcoming Cilla,
Sheridan Smith, and writer Jeff Pope are together
discussing the secrets of their creative partnership;
Dynamo will be performing effects for us all as part
of his must see magical Masterclass and Richard
Osman will interview Frankie Boyle on the State
of the TV Nation. Two of this year’s biggest
breakout stars, Steph and Dom Parker, are on
hand to tell us exactly what they think of our
programmes in a Gogglebox Masterclass and
John Bishop is Master of Ceremonies at the
hotly contested Edinburgh TV Awards
where, along with Best Channel and
Best Indie, for the first time we’ll also
be handing out a gong to the Best
Commissioning Editor in the UK.
I owe enormous thanks to this
year’s Committee, a tireless team of
volunteers who’ve produced what we
hope will be an inspiring, informative
and agenda-setting Festival. Special
thanks goes to Syeda Irtizaali,
Commissioning Editor for Entertainment at C4 and
this year’s Deputy Chair, without whose support I
would surely be in the Priory. The last word is hers…
Syeda Irtizaali is the Advisory Committee
Deputy Chair and Commissioning Editor
for Entertainment, Channel 4.
O
ver past years it’s become something
of a trend to dismiss our industry as out
of touch: let’s all snigger at hoary old
television, dad dancing at a cool new club
it doesn’t really understand. I hope the subtext of
this year’s Edinburgh is a robust clarion call to the
industry. Television is evolving at lightning speed
as old business models are thrown out the window
and international investment comes in. Yet this year
has also reminded us just how adaptable, creative,
ingenious and compelling it can be. So I hope you
enjoy this year’s Edinburgh and like all the best daddancers, wave you hands in the air like you just don’t
care. See you on the dancefloor.

THE MACTAGGART LECTURE
DAVID ABRAHAM
Following a 25 year career building and championing
creative businesses in the UK and USA, David
Abraham became Channel 4’s sixth Chief Executive
in May 2010. He formed and leads the team that is
delivering the biggest diversification of Channel 4’s
schedule in a decade following the decommissioning
of Big Brother. Investment in originated content
has been at record levels, with the team executing
the game-changing broadcast of the London 2012
Paralympic Games and commissioning award-winning
shows ranging from Gogglebox and Educating
Yorkshire to Southcliffe, The Undateables, Syria:
Across the Lines and Toast of London.
A rejuvenated Channel 4 News is making its own
headlines with Plebgate and Sri Lanka exclusives;
investment into Film4 has been boosted and is
flourishing, with titles ranging from the Oscar and
BAFTA award-winning 12 Years a Slave to the hit The
Inbetweeners Movie.
David implemented an innovative viewer
engagement strategy for Channel 4 which today has
over 11 million registered users, including half of all
16-24 year-olds in the UK. This has been achieved
while keeping revenues stable as well as forging new
commercial partnerships with UKTV and BT Sport.
David joined Channel 4 from UKTV, where he
was appointed Chief Executive in April 2007. He led
the launch of Dave and championed successful
commissions such as Red Dwarf – Back to Earth and
In the Land of the Free. Prior to this, David worked
at Discovery Networks USA where, as President and
General Manager of TLC, he was responsible for
reviving the prime US cable network. Before heading
to the US, David was General Manager of Discovery
Networks UK.
David began his career in 1984 as a graduate
trainee in advertising in London, after studying Modern
History at Oxford University. At 32, he was a Founding
Partner and Chief Operating Officer of independent
creative agency St Luke’s.
He is a member of the Board of Creative Skillset
and was Chair of the 2013 RTS Cambridge Convention.

Mama Youth Project
MAMA Youth Project (MYP) aims to
equip young people from 16-25 years
of age with the skills and experience
to secure long-term, fulfilling
employment in TV. A particular focus is on young
people from BAME, disadvantaged backgrounds and
those with limited educational or employment
opportunities, including unemployed graduates.
A unique aspect of MYP’s training model is that it
puts the trainees into a ‘real-time’ work situation during
which they have to work in a tightly knit team to produce
six episodes of a magazine TV show called ‘What’s Up’
(for broadcast on Sky 1). On each project, a cohort of 24
trainees are intensively trained in various core skills in
research, production and technical. After 12 weeks of
hands-on experience and high pressure, the trainees
become work ready and an asset to any employer.

DYNAMO: MAGICIAN
IMPOSSIBLE, SERIES 4
The Filmhouse Cinema, Edinburgh
Dynamo: Magician Impossible will return to Watch this
autumn as the world-wide hit begins its fourth series.
The award-winning magic show has charted
Dynamo’s journey from humble beginnings in Bradford
to becoming one of the world’s most talked-about
entertainers/illusionists following his dramatic
stunts, which have included the Thames ‘River Walk’
in London, walking down the side of the LA Times
building and levitating in front of the Christ the
Redeemer statue in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
The fourth series of Magician Impossible follows
Dynamo as he travels to LA, San Francisco, Paris and –
for the first time - India before heading to London and
returning to the north of England, where his story began.
From pop stars to actors to passers-by on the street, the
reaction to Dynamo’s spine-tingling magic is infectious –
amazing everyone he comes into contact with.
Steve North, General Manager for Watch, said:
“Dynamo is leading the regenerated interest in magic,
with millions of fans around the world. As well as the
mind-blowing magic, Dynamo: Magician Impossible
is the amazing story of the man himself, and how his
passion for illusion has rocketed him to international
stardom. We are thrilled that Watch is the home of
Dynamo and that we have brought the show to a
global audience.”

WE STILL NEED TO TALK
Business intelligence specialist SPA Future
Thinking was appointed by The Guardian Edinburgh
International Television Festival powered by
YouTube as its research partner to understand the
subject of commissioning and indie relations.
Three surveys were conducted in July 2014:
l Commissioner Survey: Understanding how
commissioners work with independent production
companies and how well the independent sector
serves broadcasters.
l Freelancer Survey: Capturing freelancers’
experiences of working in the TV industry, including
how they think the industry is changing and exactly
what the current issues are.
l We still need to talk about commissioning:
Speaking to independent production companies
about their views on getting work commissioned:
from securing a meeting to production, funding and
Terms of Trade.
The results of the surveys will be revealed in two
sessions at the Festival:
How To Be A Better Indie
Friday August 22, 09:00 – 10:00
In How To Be A Better Indie, our major new survey
asks the freelance community which are the best
companies to work for. The session will also highlight
indie best practice, in terms of working culture as well
as in their relationships with commissioners.

About Commissioning
Friday August 22, 12:00-13:00
After last year’s survey and Festival session, which
prompted real changes at a number of broadcasters,
GEITF and Broadcast return to the subject of

conducted by SPA Future Thinking and reviews
lessons learned and progress made.

Understanding the market
In recent years, increasing levels of sophistication in
technology have transformed the media landscape,
as we develop new ways to consume media.
TV broadcasters now face the challenge of
delivering increasing volumes of content that
captivate and engage audiences, while presenting
a clear vision that continually strengthens a brand
and builds loyalty.
SPA Future Thinking works with a range of media
clients including the BBC, ITV and BSkyB. Utilising
a range of bespoke research tools, our knowledge
of media and marcomms extends from brand
proposition and development, campaign evaluation
and effectiveness of broadcast sponsorship to
researching all forms of today’s media.
Research Solutions for broadcasters:
BrandBox is our approach
to measuring brand
performance, helping to
capture the tangible and
emotional connections to
build successful brands.
We evaluate channels and
content, exploring viewers’
relationships to aid and inform on positioning
and development. We also research audiences,
understanding how different ones engage with
channels and content, as well as testing new brands
and propositions ahead of launch to understand
brand fit.
Our broadcast sponsorship
optimisation solution,
TV Sponsorship Index,
capitalises on our expertise
in researching both tactical
and strategic campaigns. Our
approach reflects specific
campaign objectives, but also includes the diagnostic
measures we know are important to sponsorship cutthrough and efficacy. Our norms database includes
over 750 case studies and can be cut by sponsor
or programme category as well as length of deal,
ensuring we can compare a campaign to the most
relevant benchmarks.
Campaign Optimiser 2.0
identifies and understands
how different media
are consumed in a
multiplatform advertising
campaign. It evaluates the impact each media channel
has made on overall campaign awareness and on
uplifts for key brand metrics. It enables you to input
spend per platform to see which platforms over/under
index comparative to spend and crucially allows you
to alter spend per platform, to identify the results of
different media outlays.
In an era of streaming and
downloading online, as
well as skipping ad breaks
through your PVR, product
placement plays an increasingly
important role in commercial
TV. Place Max enables you to
measure and understand the
effect product placement has had on the brand in
terms of awareness, image and purchase intent,
while also providing clear guidance for future
placement strategies.
innovation
Our Playground offer was developed to provide
businesses with a greater understanding of the
way kids and families think and behave. For over
15 years we’ve been talking to children, teenagers,
parents and families for a range of media clients,
delivering insight and strategic thinking that will
aid tactical decision-making.

Lawson, less generously, as one suffering an “identity

share year-on-year with drama a particular
strongpoint, but it’s an ongoing tightrope to balance
the high-brow with relevance; the removal of the

there’s no escaping the schedule’s Bake Off-sized

THE bridge to EU funding
The Tinto
From The Bridge and Borgen to The
Returned and The Killing, Europe has
produced an impressive crop of
gripping TV drama series in recent
years – series that have met with
enthusiasm around the globe. But in
the absence of network broadcasters of the scale and
agility of HBO, what is the emerging model for
international TV drama production in Europe? How
does it differ from the showrunner-based US model
and how does the UK fit into the picture? The UK has
recently introduced tax breaks for TV and, what’s
more, the EU now offers grants of up to €1 million for
TV drama European co-pros under Creative Europe.
Could public funding be the answer and, most
importantly, how do you get your hands on it?

It’s been an award-winning year for
Channel 4 – eight BAFTA wins plus

However, it’s down in all-time share thanks to

MINORITY REPORT: IS TV RACIST?
The Pentland
The lack of diversity on- and
off-screen is one of the year’s hottest
topics and it’s gathering momentum
thanks to increasing pressure from

Observational ‘fly-on-the-wall’
documentaries in institutions like
BA, Claridge’s or Iceland regularly
command more than 3 million viewers,
so broadcasters want more – Virgin,
Asprey, the Marines, the House of

increasingly feel handcuffed by the companies they
spend huge amounts of time and money filming. Access
agreement negotiations roll on well into filming; press
officers ‘manage’ shoots; viewings of a ‘final cut’ can turn

MOTD: 50 Years of Football

There are few shows you could
describe as must-watch after some
50 years on-air, but Match of the Day
has been a firm fixture in TV
households since its birth exactly
half a century ago on Friday 22
August 1964. From humble beginnings – 20,000
tuned in to highlights of Liverpool v Arsenal, less than
half the attendance at the ground – MoTD has forged
ahead to become a veritable institution, regularly
attracting over 4.5 million viewers. Gary Lineker, its
host since 1999, will be joined by Robbie Savage, Guy
Mowbray and Chair Gabby Logan to discuss how the
show remains at the top of its game and look back at
the iconic moments that have contributed to its
enduring popularity.

From TV dramas such as Shameless,

including 12 Years a Slave, Slumdog

Ross is behind some of the biggest
and most ground-breaking hits of our
generation. Despite this, she has been dubbed “the
world’s most modest movie queen”.
In this rare interview, we look back at Tessa’s
incredible 13 year career at Film 4, discussing how
she took a troubled film division and turned it into an
award winning powerhouse. Tessa will also discuss
how she works with creative mavericks such as Steve

she is quitting the job she loves to take on a brand new

Charlotte Moore has been in charge of
BBC One for over a year, so how is her

with supermarket, parking and rip off-themes rife.
However, most of Moore’s commissions are still to

BBC: The new SuperIndie?
The Pentland
The DG says the “tectonic plates have
been moving” as Fox, Warner Bros,
Discovery and Liberty have swooped,
creating superindies of Shine,
Endemol, All3Media and Shed. So,
Tony Hall wants to release BBC
Production to compete in the open market. The
upside for BBC in-house producers is the freedom to
make programmes for any broadcaster; the downside
– they lose the guarantee of making at least half of all
BBC shows, a guarantee that underwrites 2,500 staff
and freelancers, 2,ooo annual hours of production and
£400m annual turnover. Will the new BBC in-house
‘superindie’ shoulder the old BBC burdens of
expensive overheads, nations and regions obligations
and commitments to training? Can competition
between BBC in-house and indies ever be a level
playing field? A big and bold idea that sets the agenda
for BBC Charter Renewal, but will it work?

GOD: TV’s holy grail?
The Tinto
“We don’t do God” said Alistair
Campbell. Many TV commissioners
would seem to agree. But are they
missing an opportunity to commission
award-winning, successful
programming that connects with
audiences? And does the success of productions like
The Nativity, My Brother the Islamist and Rev show
that producers make an impact by expanding their
horizons on what constitutes religious broadcasting?
In a year when we’ve been asked if Britain is still a

MEET THE CONTROLLER: PETER FINCHAM (ITV)
The Sidlaw
The BAFTAs continued to flow in 2014
with multiple wins under its belt;
drama remains a key strength
(Broadchurch has to be one of the
most-anticipated second series) but
audience share has failed to match
the highs of the previous year. Winter weekends loom
and the channel needs a replacement for Dancing on
Ice to avoid being left out in the cold. And after all the
hype, will Rising Star deliver?
Another headache for Peter Fincham is how
to keep hold of male viewers with the loss of
the Champions League, while finding a new
entertainment hit and boosting breakfast remain
persistent challenges. What is the factual strategy
under its new head Richard Klein? Long Lost Family
is a ratings banker but one-offs dominate. Is there

ED TALKS
The Pentland
The ED Talks are a series of punchy and
provocative TED Talk-style lectures
coming under the umbrella theme of
how to foster and harness creativity. As
we in telly can all be guilty of navalgazing, we’ve gathered together
speakers from a range of disciplines and professions,
from a neuroscientist who’ll explain why creativity is
not a team sport to a VICE journalist who’ll tell us how
we can better tap into tech. We’ll also hear from the
boss of M&C Saatchi about the best way to sell an idea,
while director Gurinder Chadha offers an irreverent
take on diversity with stand-up Romesh Ranganathan.
Speakers: Prof Vincent Walsh, Institute of Cognitive
Neuroscience, University College London, Dr Paul
Dolan, Professor of Behavioural Science, LSE
Tim Pool, Head of Live News, VICE Steve Edge,
Brand Guru, Prophet, Madman, Wanderer, Edge
Design, Camilla Harrison, CEO, M&C Saatchi,
Gurinder Chadha, Director, Writer, Producer (Bend
It Like Beckham, Bride & Prejudice)
Chair: Anita Rani, Broadcaster and Journalist
Producer: Anna Fern, Channels Executive, ITV,
Edward Phillips, Producer, Twofour Broadcast,
Gemma John-Lewis, Commissioning Co-ordinator,
Entertainment, ITV
Professor Vincent Walsh
A leading neuroscientist, Professor Vincent
Walsh has worked extensively with artists
and creative organisations on the themes
of perception and awareness. At Edinburgh,
he will discuss the inception of an idea, its
effect on the brain and why away days and
brainstorming aren’t likely to create that Eureka
moment we’re all looking for.
Camilla Harrison
Camilla Harrison has worked at leading ad
agencies including WCRS, Wieden and
Kennedy and Leo Burnett. She joined M&C
Saatchi as marketing director in 2005 and
five years later, became COO. In September
last year, she took over the reins as CEO. Harrison will
give a “fast and furious” take on creating the best
environment for creativity to flourish.
Steve Edge
Steve Edge describes himself as a brand
guru, prophet and Madman. The designer is
famously flamboyant and eclectic and this
promises to be an entertaining talk as well
as a very personal one, as Edge discusses
growing up with severe dyslexia and the impact it has
had on him. He’ll also discuss the power of branding
and the tricks of titling.
Professor Paul Dolan
LSE Professor Paul Dolan is internationally
renowned as an expert on happiness but
he also draws lessons from behavioural
economics to understand and change
individual behaviour. It is this latter theme that
forms the basis of his talk, and using a range of examples,
he will reveal how tiny things can cause fundamental
changes in consumer response and behaviour.
Gurinder Chadha
Making her directorial debut with the
documentary, I’m British But…in 1989,
Gurinder Chadha went on to direct feature
films which centred on British Asian
families, including Bhaji on the Beach,
BAFTA-nominated Bend it Like Beckham and Bride
and Prejudice, but her aim, she says, was to put every
one of us in their shoes, no matter what our
background. In her ED Talk, Chadha teams up with
stand-up comedian Romesh Ranganathan, promising
an “irreverent take” on diversity.
Tim Pool
Tim Pool rose to fame on the back of his
21-hour marathon reporting during the
Occupy Wall Street protests. He was
subsequently hired by VICE Media to
develop and produce new methods of
reporting, including his interactive live-chat stream,
which puts the audience in control of the questions
and even the camera. In this session, Pool will give a
live – and lively - demonstration of the possibilities
afforded by new technology, such as drones.

Frankie boyle: State of the TV nation
The Sidlaw
The Festival is set to end with a bang
this year as Frankie Boyle gives his
unique take on the TV industry in this
closing session. The inimitable
comedian will cast his critical eye over
the TV Festival as well as the wider
industry and some of the highs and lows of TV in 2014.
Boyle has established himself as one of the biggest
names on the UK comedy scene as a regular panelist of
Mock the Week. Since leaving the show, he has written
and starred in his own Channel 4 shows, Tramadol
Nights and the Boyle Variety Show as well as appearing
on many other top comedy shows.
Areas of discussion include the opportunities for new
comedians, the loss of BBC3 and the ‘quota’ for female
panelists. Boyle will also be asked for his opinion on the
drive for ratings versus the desire for experimentation as
well as his views on some of the year’s noisiest shows
such as Benefits Street.
Famous for a string of controversies - from a joke
in 2010 about the Israel-Palestine situation, which was
censured by the BBC Trust, to his joke about Katie
Price’s son Harvey - the session will also address
whether and where comedians have to draw the line.
Is any joke acceptable as long as you can explain the
rationale behind it? Should comedians take greater
responsibility for their jokes and how should they
respond when they cause offence?
And with the Scottish referendum just around
the corner, Boyle will be giving his take on Scottish
Independence to make this a topical, and we’ve no
doubt, talked-about closing session. 54

Our schemes have been developing television
careers since 1990. Since then, thousands have
honed their skills in Edinburgh and enjoyed the
continuing support of the Festival, industry experts
and each other. In 2014, we introduced assessment
days, increasing engagement and ensuring those
who make it on are the brightest new talent. We
have a great track record of identifying the leaders
of tomorrow and our alumni are now in senior
positions across the industry. In a year when
diversity has been hotly debated, we are committed
to making a positive contribution: 2014’s Network
delegates are 32% BAME and Ones to Watch are
30% BAME.
None of this would be possible without the
tireless work of the Talent Schemes committee, an
amazing selection of TV’s senior figures united by
one goal: to ensure the people who make television
are as diverse as the people who watch it. Enormous
thanks to the main Festival and the Executive
Committee for their advice, input and support.
Thank you also to our speakers and generous
supporters, who share our desire to nurture the
best and most diverse talent to ensure a healthy
future for TV.

card and impart that bit of wisdom you wish you
had known. Join us today in supporting the careers
of tomorrow’s diverse voices. You can find out more
in the accompanying Talent Schemes publication
in your bag, along with a full delegate list for the
Festival. If you would like to offer a work placement
to our bright and passionate Networkers, e-mail me
at [email protected] or come and join
us on Thursday at 1pm at The Sheraton for lunch,
where you can meet this year’s schemes delegates.
I hope to see you there.

I am going to let you in on the best-kept non-secret
about the Festival: we are a charity. Part of the
cost of your delegate pass goes directly to funding
something vital to all of our futures: new and
emerging talent. Through The Network and Ones to
Watch, we open up the Festival’s opportunities for
free. So, on behalf of both schemes, thank you for
being here.
