Scott Adams Welcome to the 2015 Repertoire Black Book. For years, we published a special Repertoire supplement called the Resource Guide. In 2012, we decided not to publish the guide due to lack of interest by the manufacturers. This decision was not well received by distribution. We had a fairly good idea that the reps would miss the issue and they did! Hence the redesigned and renamed Black Book. The Black Book will have many of the same resources and topics as the guide did (Physician Office Setup Guides, the most-used CPT codes, a Reference Listing of manufacturers). In addition, we are giving manufacturers the ability to include a product focus with tips on how to sell it in today’s marketplace. The added bonus to the Black Book is the articles, ads, and guides will be hosted in RepConnect under the listing “Repertoire’s Black Book.” RepConnect is a free app designed to make every distribution representative’s life easier. Over 100 manufacturers have listings in the RepConnect app. If you use a BlackBerry, Droid, iPhone, or iPad you can access RepConnect today for free. Thank you for all your support – as we hope this supplement reflects, we are dedicated to distribution and our manufacturing partners. Braun Medical Inc. B. Braun Medical Inc.’s Introcan Safety® family of peripheral IV catheters offers truly passive safety features that are activated automatically and cannot be bypassed. Both the Introcan Safety and the Introcan Safety 3 Closed IV Catheter minimize needlestick injuries and promote first-stick success. The Introcan Introcan Safety 3’s multiple-access blood control septum reduces exposure to blood when the needle is removed and every time the hub is accessed. Additionally, its integrated stabilization platform improves catheter stability and minimizes movement within the vessel to help reduce catheter related complications. Safety 3 Closed IV Catheter provides an added safety feature with an automatic, multi-access blood control septum, preventing blood exposure after withdrawing the needle and every time the hub is accessed. The passive safety shield deploys automatically and stays in place during disposal. Additionally, it encourages best practice by preventing needle reinsertion. The Introcan Safety Family of PIVCs also helps facilities to cut costs and generates less waste with smaller, lighter components. Customers will avoid throwing away unused components (compared to integrated catheters) and reduce costs associated with needlesticks, cleanup time and materials. Probing sales questions • “Has anyone in your facility experienced a needlestick injury?” • “Does your current IV catheter include an active safety mechanism where the user must manually activate to get the proper protection?” • “Is there a concern for wasted product?” • “Is first-stick success important?” Recent studies1, 2 confirm that passive safety designs offer 2-3 times better protection against accidental needlesticks than active designs. INS Standards also recommend the use of passive safety devices. osini W, et al. “ Needlestick Injury Rates According to Different Types of Safety Engineered Devices: Results of a French Multicenter T Study”, Infection Control and Hospital Epidemiology, April 2010. It takes unique expertise, commitment, skills and enhanced products to do this correctly, and growing numbers of providers are devoting additional resources to this important area. Crosstex/SPSmedical seeks to continue developing novel products that address these critical issues as infection prevention markets grow. Secure Fit® Technology Face Masks from Crosstex/SPSmedical are an example of such a novel product. Secure Fit® Technology Face Masks from Crosstex/SPSmedical are proven to provide up to three times greater protection over other face masks*. Secure Fit® Technology Face Masks feature patent-pending aluminum nose and chin pieces that can be adjusted to fit the shape and size of any face while significantly reducing the gapping on the sides and bottom of the mask, reducing exposure to airborne particulates and aerosols by more than three times that of a standard ear loop face mask. Secure Fit® Technology Face Masks are made-in-the-USA from only the highest quality materials and tested to ensure premium performance, which protects healthcare workers and patients alike. *Study on file. Very often face masks that are used are minimum performance masks. The central areas of the face are the most important areas for transmission of infection, and they’re also the areas that are most vulnerable to contamination during certain procedures. A mask that meets ASTM Level 1-3 criteria will provide the protection needed while cleaning contaminated instruments. ASTM Level 3 masks provide the highest level of protection from aerosols and fluid sprays. Secure Fit® Technology Face Masks come in ASTM Levels 1-3. Use in conjunction with ¾ or full length Crosstex Face Shields for additional protection from direct splatter.** ** Face shields do not replace the use of a procedure-appropriate face mask. Do not use a face shield without a face mask during aerosol procedures. See how safe really feels: Compare a fitted mask with Secure Fit® Technology to a standard mask. Request a FREE sample. Featuring dual aluminum strips — above the nose and under the chin — our patent-pending design eliminates gaps, increases protection and greatly reduces fogging while maximizing breathability and comfort. No wonder users gave Secure Fit® the top rating in every category in a national mask survey. Here’s why: Did you know that healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) affect 1.7 million patients each year in the United States? That this is 5-10 percent of hospitalizations? That this accounts for One method to help your clients reduce cross-contamination is to upgrade to touchless dispensers. Using Georgia-Pacific Professional automated no-touch product dispensers, and no-touch towel dispensers for single-use disposable paper towels, helps reduce potential opportunities for cross-contamination. Georgia-Pacific Professional soap and hand sanitizer dispensers also help reduce the risk about 99,000 deaths? HAIs can be acquired at any healthcare facility, and they add nearly $20 billion to healthcare costs annually, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Infection Prevention PDI’s Prevantics® product portfolio Bloodstream infections continue to be a leading cause of mortality and morbidity for patients with invasive catheters. Patients with cancer and autoimmune disorders can have weakened immune systems, so it is critically important to reduce their risk of contracting a Healthcare Associated Infection (HAI) or a bloodstream infection. These patients may be prescribed infusion therapies administered via intravenous route. Infusion therapy can take place at a physician’s office, hospital or ambulatory care facility. As surgical procedures are moving away from the traditional hospital setting, there is an increased focus on preventing HAIs. The Prevantics® product portfolio is a comprehensive, evidence-based solution that addresses the vascular access continuum of care. By using Prevantics® Skin Antiseptics for skin preparation and the Prevantics® Device Swab for disinfecting a needleless access sites prior to use along with practicing hand hygiene and adhering to aseptic technique when accessing devices, the risk for these serious HAIs can be mitigated. Prevantics® Skin Antiseptics: • Swabstick and Maxi Swabstick are FDAapproved for preoperative indications, pre-activated and ready-to-use with no glass to break and, unlike alcohol or povidoneiodine, provide up to 7 days of continued antimicrobial activity.1 • Swab has a pre-injection indication and an intuitive prep-pad design. • Contains 3.15% (w/v) Chlorhexidine Gluconate (CHG) and 70% (v/v) Isopropyl Alcohol (IPA). • Chlorhexidine is the preferred solution for skin antisepsis by the CDC.2 Prevantics® Device Swab (newest addition): • Specifically indicated for the disinfection of needleless access sites prior to use. • First and only 3.15% CHG and 70% IPA solution authorized by the FDA to disinfect needleless access sites prior to use. • Quick 5 second scrub time and 5 second dry time to help with staff compliance. • Supported by the CDC guidelines which state “Some studies have shown that disinfection of the devices with Chlorhexidine/Alcohol solutions appears to be the most effective in reducing colonization.”3 A wide selection of infection prevention and Prevantics® educational materials, including in-service videos, Instructions-for-Use posters, webinars and whitepapers, are available at www.pdihc.com. Reason: This question gets them talking about their overall practice and how they are planning to grow the business. Lab tests will come up and are a great way to grow revenues. Question: What are the most common disease states that you work with? Reason: If a customer says they see a lot of diabetics, they should have access to in-office glucose and HbA1c testing. If they are sending these out, they can deliver better patient care, streamline practice workflow and increase their revenue by bringing them in house. Have them sell themselves on the importance of testing in-house. Every caregiver will tell you this is important and they will see better patient outcomes if they can have a face-to-face conversation about test results. 22 REPERTOIRE RESOURCED FROM THE BLACK BOOK 2016 • www.repertoiremag.com Lab Specific Questions Question: What tests are you currently sending out? Reason: This is a great way to get the customer talking about what they are currently sending to a reference lab. High volumes on certain tests are a great place to start since they are already running them and they can quickly bring that revenue back in house. Question: What is your current process for running (INSERT TEST)? Reason: This is an easy way to find out how they are performing this test and if there are any issues you can discuss. If they talk about how hard it is to run a CBC, discuss the process and come up with a solution that makes it easier to get a result. Question: How would having a face-to-face conversation with a patient about their test results impact the way you practice medicine? Reason: Have them sell themselves on the importance of testing in house. Every caregiver will tell you this is important and they will see better patient outcomes if they can have a face-to-face conversation about test results. Many patients who are referred out for testing never go. This makes it difficult for physicians to provide proper care since they don’t have test results. Question: How does it impact your care when you refer patients for lab tests and they don’t go? Reason: Many patients who are referred out for testing never go. This makes it difficult for physicians to provide proper care since they don’t have test results. Question: Have you ever thought of doing lab testing in the office? If so, what tests interest you? If not, why? Reason: Get them talking about testing in-house so you can determine if there are any reservations or fears that you can put at ease. Once they are talking about testing, you can tailor your conversation to the tests they send out the most. Question: What is your current treatment plan for (Disease State) patients? Reason: Find out how they are testing and maintaining these patients. (Examples = Diabetes or High Cholesterol) RESOURCED FROM THE BLACK BOOK 2016 • www.repertoiremag.com REPERTOIRE 23 POL Alere Diabetes is one of the most expensive diseases for our healthcare system and a major cause of disability and death for patients. Twenty-nine million Americans have diabetes – or 9.3 percent of the population – and over one in four do not know they have it. Another 86 million Americans are at risk for developing the disease.1 For people with diabetes, the key to minimizing suffering and preventing loss of life is controlling their elevated blood sugar levels (hyperglycemia). For some patients, (HbA1c or A1C). In its clinical practice recommendations, the American Diabetes Association (ADA) recommends testing A1C twice each year in patients that are well-controlled, and four times each year in patients that are not.2 The large number of patients with diabetes and the need for frequent testing makes A1C one of the most common laboratory tests. While A1C tests can be performed by sending a patient or their blood sample to a laboratory, patient care is improved when results are immediately available to the clinician by using a point-of-care method in the office or clinic. The Alere Afinion™ AS100 Analyzer delivers lab quality, is CLIA-waived, and provides A1C test results in three minutes from a fingerstick blood sample. Knowing now matters™ this means testing themselves for glucose. But for all patients, a long-term measure is needed by both patients and clinicians to determine glycemic control. This long-term measure – or truth serum for a diabetes patient – is hemoglobin A1c Having A1C results available immediately enables earlier therapeutic decisions, which can result in improved diabetic control,3 better patient outcomes,3-5 and enhanced clinic efficiency with fewer patient visits and economic benefits for the practice or clinic.6 The enhanced quality of care enabled by a three-minute, CLIA-waived, in-office test like Alere Afinion™ HbA1c is recognized by the ADA recommendation that “use of point-ofcare testing for A1C provides the opportunity for more timely treatment changes.”2 Knowing now matters™ to patients, too, resulting in improved satisfaction.5 References 1. Providers are overwhelmed with reimbursement programs, while trying to efficiently provide quality patient care. These challenges present a great opportunity to offer your customers equipment that can help meet requirements, increase workflow efficiency, and improve patient outcomes. Though facilities weigh patients every day, scales are often overlooked as a vital piece of equipment. Health o meter® Professional Scales, the #1 Medical Scale brand in the USA*, designs scales to provide benefits beyond accurate weight measurements and offers scales that meet the needs of both patients and staff. Health o meter® Professional Scales’ low-profile platforms and live handrails offer patients a more secure and stable weighing experience. Utilizing equipment that is comfortable and safe for the patients can help improve workflow and yield positive reviews on patient care surveys, which can improve performance scores for providers participating in the Medicare shared savings program. Preventing falls not only protects patients against injury, but also protects the provider’s bottom line. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services identifies falls as a healthcare acquired condition (HCAC) and limits reimbursements for costs associated with those fall injuries. Health o meter® Professional Scales help improve workflow efficiency with timesaving features, such as digital height rods and automatic Body Mass Index (BMI) calculations. As the industry-leading brand, the company also offers the market’s largest offering of wireless and EMR-capable scales. Working with your customers When talking to your customers about scales you could ask: • “How old is your current scale?” • “Could a scale with better functionality improve your workflow?” • “What efforts are you taking in your practice to improve patient safety and quality of care?” Health o meter® Professional Scales offers a free 14-day trial, permitting customers to try a Health o meter® Professional product at their facility at no charge, including FREE freight to and from the customer. Yet most of that casework is not designed to meet the stringent needs of those spaces. The upfront price might be lower, but over time it may actually cost customers more if delamination or warping occurs, glides and hinges break, etc. And traditional cabinetry is typically not flexible enough to be reconfigured if workflow or demand changes. Furthermore, when casework is designed for a medical space, it typically does not have the aesthetics or brand appeal the health system is looking for. That’s why your physician customers will appreciate the Synthesis™ Casework Collection by Midmark Corporation. Begin a discussion with your physician customers by asking the following: • “What casework projects are you planning?” (Look for projects that are still in the planning stages.) •C ustomers can rely on Midmark’s team of design experts and project managers for help planning their next casework project. We can work with their architect and/or planner to design a solution to meet their needs. • “Is the casework you’re considering designed for a medical space?” • The Synthesis™ 18-gauge, powderedcoated steel frame holds hinges and slides up to 192 percent better than that of traditional wood cabinets. • Seamless door and drawer fronts and seamless tub drawers help prevent points for delamination as well as support infection control protocols. • “ Does your casework support your clinical workflow?” • Synthesis™ is designed to optimize available space and improve access to supplies. It offers: • Full access to drawer space, with full extension ball-bearing slides. • Integrated glove and towel dispensers. • Mobile treatment cabinets, which minimize steps in the clinical space. • Internal and external configuration flexibility. • “Is your casework designed to support your infection control protocols?” • Synthesis™ uses: • Seamless thermofoil panels. • Seamless one-piece polystyrene. • EPA-registered antimicrobial pulls (optional). • Preventative biocidal surface. When it comes to medical devices and bacterial cross-contamination, what is the medical device manufacturer’s role in helping to protect our customers and their patients? Researchers have discovered that the three bacteria most commonly found in hospital environments – including two that are resistant to antibiotics – can survive on keyboards and keyboard covers used in clinical areas.1 Environmental surfaces in the healthcare environment serve as reservoirs for microorganisms, which can cause infection in patients and healthcare workers due to cross contamination. Given that so much patient care now takes place in the outpatient environment, and many 1 medical procedures previously done in the hospital now occur in the office space, it’s reasonable to be concerned about the contamination risks of physician offices and ambulatory surgery centers. Reducing cross contamination within healthcare environments requires careful evaluation of clinical procedures and the use of medical equipment in that space. And that’s where Mortara comes in. As a leading developer and manufacturer of innovative medical devices, Mortara – the company that proudly brings you Burdick products – recognizes that medical equipment harboring dangerous bacteria is a major contributor to the problem. We continuously work to find new and inventive ways of combating this dilemma. Most recently, Mortara Instrument introduced a series of electrocardiographs and patient monitors with easy-toclean work surfaces and fewer places for bacteria to reside. Our Burdick ELI™ 280 ECG, Surveyor™ S12 and S19 Patient Monitors, all with touchscreen interfaces, feature smooth work surfaces that are easier to clean than traditional keyboards and work surfaces with knobs, buttons, seams and crevices.
