MEN’S 2010-11 SEASON OUTLOOK
DISTANCE
Senior Joshua Foulds and redshirt sophomore James McBride both return to stabilize the distance team for both the indoor and outdoor season. Foulds, a long distance
specialist, will be better suited to shine in the outdoor season. McBride, now fully
recovered, is expected to be a key contributor in both the indoor and outdoor season.
McBride is a versatile runner who excels in the mid-distance events.
A few incoming freshman are also expected to make an early impact in the
distance events. Kevin DiFlorio is expected to contribute at the mid-distance events.
DiFlorio was a top 800-meter runner as a senior at Hatboro-Horsham High School.
Chris Brandt from Danville High School is also expected to have good potential.
SPRINTS
The Marauders may have the most depth in the sprint events despite losing Stephen Boyd from last year’s squad. Any one of the sprinters has the ability to shine at
each meet. Returning for Millersville are juniors Keith Ogden, Jorrel Nugent, Anthony
Adamski, and senior Derrick Bass. Sophomore Chris Wallace and freshman Thomas
Wexler also have the ability to step up for the Marauders.
HURDLES
An event the Marauders lack depth in is the hurdles. Only three members of the
men’s team are listed on the roster to compete in this event. Anchored by junior Keith
Ogden and sophomores Chris Jackson and Ryan Giffith, Millersville will look to this trio
to step up in the hurdle events.
Under head coach Scott Weiser’s watch the Millersville men’s track and field
team has seen improvement each of the last two years in the PSAC Outdoor
Championships. This season Weiser senses an opportunity to also improve in the
indoor season. With the return of all but two members of the 2009-10 roster, the
men’s track and field team is bolstered with indoor capability. The two lone graduates from last year’s squad are Stephen Boyd and Jim Boyer. Boyd will be missed
in the sprints and relay events, while Boyer will be missed in the distance events.
A talented group returners and a good recruiting class should diminish the loss of
the two graduates.
Millersville returns plenty of talent for the indoor events, especially at the
sprints, mid-distance, and multi events. The Marauders have the ability to better
their 10th place finish at the PSAC Indoor Championship a year ago. Coach Wesier
embraces the chance for improvement this winter. “I think we are a little bit better
of an outdoor team than an indoor team because of the addition of several field
events, but with the guys we have they will make for a better indoor team because
they are more mid-distance oriented, said Weiser.”
In the spring, the stronger season for men’s team of late, Millersville will look
to improve in its placing yet again under coach Wesier. In 2009, Wesier’s first year
at the helm, the men’s team placed 11th in the PSAC Outdoor Championship. They
improved in the following season, last year, by finishing ninth and gaining almost
20 points in the standings. A big lift for the Marauders will be two key returning
members of the team who redshirted last year due to season ending injuries.
James McBride and Brendon Thomas, both PSAC qualifiers two years ago, will be
ready to compete at the start of the indoor season.
JUMPS
A freshman may have the chance to lead the team in jumps, specifically the
long jump. Freshman Steve Eister is fully expected to start competing at each event
this season. Returning in jumps are seniors Derrick Bass and Jorrel Nugent. Brendon
Thomas and Zac Kohler are also expected to compete well in the jump events, but will
competing in most of the multi-event scheduled this season.
THROWS
Junior Peter Hafer and graduate student Avery Webster are returning for Millersville. Webster is not expected to begin competition until the outdoor season. Hafer will
be the go to guy in the indoor season as incoming freshmen Tristan Conrad and Quinn
Fry are expected to make their mark in javelin come spring.
POLE VAULT
Millersville will have two experienced vault specialist returning. Senior Greg
McHugh and junior Ryan McCauley are back this year with five years of experience between the two of them. Zac Kohler and Brendon Thomas are also available to compete
in the pole vault, but will usually take part in the Multis.
MULTIS
The Marauders will look to redshirt senior Brendon Thomas and junior Zac Kohler
to compete in the multi events. Weiser considers these two veterans to be a good one,
two punch in the PSAC and considers them to be among the top competitors in the
conference.
Thomas is coming off of a redshirt year much like McBride, where he was a top
finisher in the decathlon in the PSAC Outdoor Championships in 2009. Both Thomas
and Kohler look to help better the Millersville place in the standings from a year ago.
