The display includes (from left to right): • Traditional Japanese lion’s head mask designed and made by Ken Nagao, which was used by Eugene Taiko when they performed a piece called “Matsuri” (Celebration). • 5’ x 9’ kite painted by Ken Nagao depicting stylized MEGAN LALLIER-BARRON You can visit the museum during the Asian Celebration. Just exit the Food Court through its north exit doors, pass the exterior cooking area, and you will get to the main entrance of the Lane County Historical Museum. Japanese koi and sockeye salmon frolicking together. • Three fox masks made by Ken Nagao used by dancers accompanied by Eugene Taiko in a piece called “Family” to show how the sounds of the taiko (made by Ken) brought people of different cultures together in friendship. • Four of our favorite posters created for the Asian Celebration around a traditional Chinese lion’s head mask used by several groups of our local Lion Dancers who were trained by David Tam. Poster art was created by Kenji Kobayashi, Kathy Hoy, and Marianne Walker. Mythology has even depicted it as a single-horned or winged creature. This powerful and beautiful animal has made possible travel and movement in all parts of the world. Horses have transported gods and men of all ranks throughout history and myth. The horse symbolizes many things: power, speed, tenacity, intuition, strength, agility, perseverance, purity, virility, fertility, travel, and money. In itself, it is a beautiful animal – majestic and wild, yet gentle when tamed. Many Asian businesses have a horse painting or statue to invite the energy of success and the ability to leap over obstacles with grace and ease. When you hear someone say, “you’ve got good horse sense,” take it as a compliment. It means having good judgment, common sense, and the ability to make decisions quickly and soundly – traits necessary to succeed in any enterprise. and aspire to see the future with excitement – leaping towards goals with the conviction, power, and agility of the horse – that is what we invite into our lives as we celebrate this wondrous creature and old friend to mankind. This year ’s theme, “Riding Into A New Era,” invokes the energy of powerful and successful change. The ability to move on from the past Let us all ride into the new era of peace, happiness and success as we welcome yet another year – the Year of the Horse! 19 partner events Springfield area and around 8th ANNUAL PACIFIC MARTIAL ARTS CONFERENCE the Pacific Northwest.
