WALKATHON Last Friday, Mawson students in Kinder to Year 6 participated in the Annual School P&C Walkathon. The day was a huge success for students who walked to the Issac shops and enjoyed playing at the park. Thank you to all parent helpers on the day, who walked with classes. Thank you to the P&C for organising a delicious fruit snack for the students and teachers. All sponsorship money is due by Friday, June 5 and our exciting prize raffle assembly will be held on Friday, June 19. Funds raised by the event this year will go towards purchasing quality books for our school library collection. YEAR 6 LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE On Thursday May 14, Year 6 students from Mawson Primary attended a Leadership Conference at Torrens Primary School. The conference was titled Dream Believe Succeed and all Year 6 students from Torrens, Farrer and Mawson participated in various activities, based on setting goals and pursuing aspirations. Two young, Australian basketballers spoke to the students about the importance of following their dreams. These cluster school activities allow our students to build valuable relationships with other students in the community and make new friends before high-school. COMBINED BAND PERFORMANCE Students in the Year 5 and 6 recorder band joined with Garran Primary School on Tuesday, to practice and perform together. The event was a huge success and the combined band put on an entertaining performance for our students and families from Garran and Mawson. ROSTRUM SPEAKING COMPETITION Students in Year 3 to 6 participated in the ROSTRUM Public Speaking competition last week. Each class chose two finalists to speak at the school final and the standard of speeches was exceptionally high. The school’s final winner was Christina F. from 3N who presented an entertaining speech on Life before TV. The top three students will present their speeches at the whole school assembly on Friday June 5. Christina will represent Mawson Primary School at the quarter finals, held at Farrer Primary School in June. Congratulations to the students who represented their classes at the final. RECONCILIATION WEEK National Reconciliation Week is from May 27 – June 3. Reconciliation is about building better relationships between the wider Australian community and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples for the benefit of all Australians. To create positive change we need more people talking about the issues and coming up with innovative ideas and actions, that make a difference. ASSEMBLY This week 5/6MIP and KM will host a joint assembly at 12:45 on Friday. All parents and carers are welcome to attend. PARENT ASSISTANCE NEEDED Recently the school has had to pay for a plumber to clear the upper playground girls' toilets, following students putting chip packets, museli bar wrappings etc in the toilet bowls causing them to block again. Can you please talk to your child/children about the need to put their rubbish in the bin and not in the toilet. SCHOOL UNIFORM Parents are encouraged to purchase the correct uniform for school. Parents will be informed if a student is not wearing school uniform including school shoes for an extended period of time and will work with the family to prevent a recurrence. Please Note: Financial support is available to provide uniforms for students, through the Schools’ student support funds. Non Compliance and Resolving Conflict: All children are expected to meet dress standards and uniform unless an exemption has been granted. Positive reinforcement and encouragement of school uniform will be encouraged by all staff. There are times, however, when family circumstances prevent children from wearing the school uniform. Teachers and school staff take these circumstances into consideration. A student’s inability to comply however should not interfere or interrupt student learning. See EDT policy at www.det.act.gov.au. Have a great week! Stacey Meyer Executive Teacher All Year 6 students and their families are reminded that they need to have done their online enrolment for High School by the 5 June 2015. All students must do an online enrolment even if they wish to go to their in area High School. Any families who do not have access to a computer or are having difficulties doing the online enrolment are more than welcome to contact Melrose High School to arrange a time to use the computers in our library and the staff are available to assist them. What’s been happening in the Environment Centre? Scientists in Schools Program Scientists in Schools is a national program that creates and supports long-term partnerships between primary or secondary school teachers and scientists. Mawson Primary is participating in this program this year and we are lucky enough to have formed a partnership with scientist Ms. Carol Quashie-Williams who is an entomologist (studies insects). Carol has given presentations on insects to multiple classes as part of their biology studies and has helped us improve our Environment Centre gardens. Guest Speaker Scientist Tricia Stewart spoke to grade 5 students about the Yellow Box eucalyptus tree. The students discussed the adaptations the Yellow Box has to be able to survive in its natural habitat.
