The Journal of the BSA Motorcycle Club of NSW Inc The BSA Banter Meetings 8pm 1st Thursday of each month at the Regents Park Bowling Club Vol 31 #3 June-July 2011 1 FROM THE SHED The August Club meeting on the 4th will, as foreshadowed, be the 2011 AGM. The theme of this AGM is “Easing the Secretary’s Burden” and it is hoped some keen members will nominate to take on some of the hats Trevor presently wears. We are also using the AGM (if we have enough response) to raffle a credit letter from Peter Scott Motorcycles (the magneto man at Seven Hills - excellent workmanship) for $100 credit towards any maggy rebuild (labour not parts). This award originates from the National Rally but was overlooked at the time. The credit expires 25 December 2011. Please email your silent request to be included in the draw to Trevor or me (addresses below). This is a freebie raffle, so just your name and contact. There has also been much work and club discussion to update the ride plate rules, as the RTA has asked all historic clubs to submit new versions. See last Banter for more info. The new rules will be discussed again at the AGM and the draft put on the BSA NSW website. Following the AGM we will have several new vehicle examiners in the Club so Roy Breyley’s (South Coast member) suggested safety check rules for veteran, vintage and classic motorcycles will also be posted on the website. On the bike side, the Club has kept its ride program up, with a number of new riders joining the pack. Several members are putting together a draft of an annual ride program based on previous years and timing of various motorcycling events etc. This should be out in the next few months. Lastly, the “Ailing A65” has revived herself and now fires on both pots. This bike has not run in anger for about 18 months and suffered lack of spark on the left pot. Discussion on this subject and the relative merits of the various electronic ignition systems has prompted me to knock up an article for the next issue. Needless to say, the hassles taught me a little about how these systems work, or not, as happened. The Ed. These are seriously tricky and were going to involve a lot of work so why not do it right and do a production run. Alan manufactured them here (yes, we can still do that in Australia) and has gone to a lot of effort to ensure they are correct reproductions in every way. The tubing is original diameter and even the wall thickness as per original as is every bend, kink and pressing. The finish is bare metal so they can be painted to match your bike. Alan’s only done a small run of these and the jigs have been recycled so when they’re gone that’s it. 95-97 Princes Hwy St Peters NSW 2044 T: (02) 9557 7234 E: [email protected] European and Classic Motorcycles Authentic Merchandise & Memorabilia Service - Repairs - Sales DAVIDA HELMETS • HALCYON & NANNINI GOGGLES BIKE T-SHIRTS • NORTON APPAREL • ENGINEER & ROSSI BOOTS ACE CAFÉ MERCHANDISE • WAX COTTON JACKETS/JEANS UK LEWIS LEATHERS • STAGG LEATHERS Sydney Moto Morini & Royal Enfield Dealer ALL TYRE BRANDS & FITTING BLUE SLIPS / PINK SLIPS / QBE GREENSLIPS Also: classic leather gauntlets, white silk scarves, books, posters, b/w photos, classic bike DVD’s, badges, patches and a whole lot more. www.motociclo.com.au 4 Victor’s Run Page Cottage Point Run, 21 May, 2011 Today, 11 people on 9 bikes (6 of which were BSAs) got together and met at the St Ives showground for a nice ride down to Cottage Point where we stopped for coffee and something to eat. Joe and Jane rode their Fat Boy, Mark and Donna on their '67 Lightning, Mark on his XS650, Ray on his Bonnie, and Victor, Neil, Brian, Shane, and myself on our mighty BEEZAS! The food and drinks were nice, just a bit pricey, but sitting out on their sun deck overlooking the beautiful water and surroundings made it worth it. We waited there for Ray to catch up with us, (he arrived with a police escort) then headed off for Palm Beach, via Church Point. We arrived at Palm Beach at about midday, picked a nice cafe, and settled in for another coffee and a chat. We stayed there for an hour or so and then headed off for home. It was truly a great day for a ride, not cold but not hot enough to work up a sweat either. There were no break downs or any other misshaps. Our next posted ride is the night ride on the 12th of June (sunday night of the Queens Birthday weekend) The last night ride was on a long weekend Sunday night and the traffic was very light. Let's try to get a good roll up to this ride, it's only a short one, La Perouse to Woolloomooloo via the eastern beaches. See you there! Paul A Patonga Run, 10 July, 2011 Unfortunately, I slept in this morning, so I arrived at Asquith about 9:15 not really expecting to see anyone. Luckily for me, the cold weather had slowed everyone down and so I was relieved to see John B on his Triumph and David on his 55 Gold Star 350cc single waiting at the servo. With my Lightning, it was an all-British turnup for a change ;-) Not long after, as we discussed the route for the ride, Carl turned up on his Yamaha trail bike. So the four of us headed off around 9:20. The old Pacific Highway is always a great ride and this morning was no exception; beautiful sky, not too cold and light traffic. We lost touch with Carl somewhere around Pie in the Sky and so only three of us arrived at the Road Warrior. It turned out that Carl was hoping to find a lunch box he had lost on an earlier ride and there may have been some confusion about we here we were stopping. We enjoyed our coffees and discussed possible routes to Patonga when Mark and Donna turned up on Mark's Lightning having ridden from their home at Umina - a great effort considering our destination is just minutes from their home. We waited a little longer for Carl but eventually the four bikes headed off for West Gosford and then along Brisbane Water Drive to Woy Woy. Leaving West Gosford, we got caught up in some weekend road works but with David leading the way we were able to bypass the bulk of the traffic and make our way on to the pretty coastal road. Having negotiated the streets of Woy Woy and Umina we found ourselves on the deceptively rough road to Patonga. Breath-taking views back to Woy Woy were soon lost but it wasn't long until we began to get glimpses of the small township as we began the descent to Patonga. We grabbed some chips etc from the local fish and chippery and sought some shelter from the wind in the pavillion at the park next door. Mark and Donna's son joined us for lunch as we enjoyed the view of Brisk Bay, which seemed aptly named. We were ready now to head back. Mark and Donna were going straight back to Umina so we parted ways as we turned off to Woy Woy and then off along Woy Woy road to Kariong. We opted once again for the old Pacific Highway and it wasn't long before we were at Pie In The Sky for some refreshment and a chat. This was a great ride with the weather about as good as it gets for winter. Hope to see you on the next ride. I am writing on behalf of Kyogle Dirt bike Club (KDBC) to inform you that there is a well funded anti motorcycle group attempting to have all motorcycles banned from properties less than 40 hectares (100 acres) and impose severe restrictions on recreational riders on private property which is greater than 100 acres (40hectares). The previous NSW state government passed legislation to allow people to complain if they find noise offensive (Section 69 LGEPA). The person does not even have to be a resident of the shire to be able to complain. Under this new legislation council must act to remove the source. This is done by placing a stop order on the property and the owner. If the stop order is violated then fines of up to $100,000 can apply per day of use. Just so you are aware, take for example a stock Yamaha WR 450 registered in NSW by the RTA. This bike is road legal and can go on any registered road in the state and meet all requirements of the law. However under this new legislation if anyone complains to council, this same bike cannot be ridden on private property and remember is doesn’t have to be a neighbour to complain. Kyogle council has adopted a draft policy (see attached URL page 67 onward) and it will be out for public comment at the end of this month. http://www.kyogle.nsw.gov.au/content/uploads/AGENDA28MAR11.pdf http://www.northernstar.com.au/story/2011/03/29/move-to-muffle-dirt-bike-riders-kyogle/ This has led to a group of people driving around our shire taking photos and videos and presenting evidence to council forcing them to act. There have been 20 complaints out of a total of 9868 people (0.2%of 1%) in our shire. This anti bike group is well funded and most of the group are not gainfully employed, allowing access to council 5 days a week. They are a splinter group of the Anti World Rally Championship that was successful in having the rally moved from Kyogle Shire. Kyogle council has assisted our club in organising Development applications to run races through motorcycling NSW. However, our members feel the councils attitude towards recreational riders is abhorrent. We are a very small club with less than 30 members all with full time employment. We don’t have the resources or the skills to fight this well organised and well funded group, who have access to the media, both newspapers and television. We need your help!!!! This group is trying to make our shire the example for all others in the state to follow and they have already emailed and contacted many other anti bike groups on the north coast to start lobbying their local councils and use this legislation against all motorbike riders. We unfortunately are the test case and once the draft is adopted we are all finished. Your local government area will be next. You and your club needs to lobby your local politician to have this legislation changed, (or at least a decibel rating for "offensive" applied), and once the draft from our council is available for public comment we need to all make submissions. Please do take this matter seriously, we already have stop orders on 12 and 10 year old children riding Yamaha TTR's, a 125 and a 90. (A lawn mower is louder). This is how extreme this group is and they have stated that this is just the beginning. Primary production practices are exempt, but recreational riding on farms IS NOT! Any suggestions or help will be greatly appreciated. Pre-war BSAs - online parts and technical help • Acceptance of President’s, Treasurer’s and other club reports You may have recently acquired a pre-war BSA and, to be honest, their prices in Oz don’t seem too outlandish for a rapidly diminishing stock of interesting bikes. It may not be a big V-twin but even the ‘umble 250 go-to-work single can be a charming little machine, with all the control idiosyncrasies of the time and curious fork movement making these quite different to the 50s+ boom bikes. But this is before the time of exploded parts diagrams and comprehensive manuals (definitely pre-Haynes), so you need what’s available, mostly service sheets, stock picture lists of parts and hopefully a nice rider’s booklet.
