new growth at the
National Memorial Arboretum
Nik Chambers at building services consultancy, Greenways, discusses the mechanical and electrical
design for the new £15.7m visitor complex at the National Memorial Arboretum...
Set in 150 acres of woodland with more than 300 dedicated
memorials, the National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire
has been a very special place for remembering and respecting
those who have served and sacrificed for their country since
it first opened in 2001.
Part of The Royal British Legion, it now attracts 300,000
visitors each year – around 240,000 more than the original
visitor centre was designed to accommodate. As a result,
a new visitor complex has been designed to provide
additional catering and function facilities and enhanced

educational and exhibition spaces while creating a building
that complements its natural surroundings.
Aesthetic goals
Designed by Glen Howells Architects, the new building
will be delivered by main contractor, Stepnell. The design
incorporates parts of the existing visitor centre,
while expanding its scope and scale with a major new
build scheme. The finished project will provide a 2,670m2
visitor complex, complemented by a new, paved Memorial
Square.
The project will include two, interactive exhibition spaces
and an acoustic drum where visitors will enjoy immersive
film shows. It will also provide a large restaurant and catering
kitchen, The Rose Room function room, a café, classrooms,
staff offices and a spacious main reception.
The aesthetic principles guiding the design of the new
building are rooted in its woodland location and the building
services design had to respect those goals while providing
high levels of comfort and environmental performance.
They have been developed collaboratively between
Greenways, mechanical and electrical contractor,
Daly Engineering, and the architectural team,
following a concept by Yes Engineering.
Ventilation solution
One of the most significant mechanical and electrical
design challenges in terms of complementing the building’s
aesthetics was the ventilation system, which had to be
integrated across the existing and new sections of the
building and meet the needs of the exhibition,
catering and high traffic circulation areas.
The window-based natural ventilation initially proposed
for the restaurant proved complicated due to the number
of window actuators that would have been required and the
issues of managing heat load and wind direction. Instead, the
building services design partners developed a bespoke turretbased natural ventilation system for the restaurant and the
Rose Room. This low maintenance solution will ensure even
ventilation, regardless of heat load and wind direction. It has
also delivered aesthetic advantages by enabling the architect
to incorporate full height bay windows in the restaurant
without the visual interruption of opening mechanisms
or any aesthetic challenges with the visual line of the roof.
For the exhibition areas, the acoustic drum and the back of
house accommodation, a mechanical ventilation system is
being installed but, once again, this had to be designed
without impacting on the aesthetic design of the building.
As a result, air handling units and ventilation plant are
recessed within the roof and obscured by the raised façade.
Energy efficiency
While the lighting in the exhibition areas will be designed
and installed by a specialist, all control infrastructure and
distribution for the lighting had to form part of the building
services design. Throughout the restaurant, Rose Room and
public areas the LED lighting scheme has been designed to
complement both the building’s aesthetics and its
environmental aims. Secto Magnum fittings, handcrafted in
Finland, have been specified for the Restaurant and the Rose
Room, with a wooden structure that reflects the visitor
centre’s woodland setting.

Feature lighting and scene setting has been incorporated into
the lighting design for the courtyard and the acoustic drum
and all lighting systems are connected to daylight sensing for
added energy efficiency.
The control systems are all part of an energy management
strategy for the building, in line with its natural location,
which also includes the use of solar thermal energy as the
main heat source for the domestic hot water supply.
The building management system (BMS) will provide overall
control of the mechanical ventilation systems and provide
monitoring to the natural ventilation system and comfort
cooling. The heating, which will combine underfloor heating in
the restaurant, Rose Room and exhibition areas, with radiators
in the back of house accommodation and trench heaters
adjacent to the restaurant windows, will also be integrated
into the BMS and controlled by temperature sensors.
Source of national pride
Throughout the year, the Arboretum plays host to a range
of notable events and activities, ranging this year from
a visit by Her Majesty The Queen in May to the familyfocused Armed Forces Day in June. The new Remembrance
Centre will be open to the public in Autumn 2016,
with visitor numbers expected to rise to 500,000
within the next five years.

paragon interserve –
a contemporary workplace
Resonate Interiors was appointed by Paragon Interserve’s Matt Bray and Paul Vinten to design a
state-of-the-art, modern workplace to house the newly-merged global construction company.
The client approached Resonate with a brief for a contemporary, flexible workplace for circa 140
desks. Paragon required a flexible workspace and had a need for hot-desking to encourage various
teams in the business to collaborate and work together in a supportive and welcoming environment.
ABC+D takes a look...
The new headquarters at Old Broad street is acting as the
Southeast Hub for Interserve and Paragon – a great place for
combining this large infrastructure company and the interior
fit out company. Based in the heart of the city and enjoying
great reputations within the London market, the companies
are well-placed to access their clients in the City and the West
End and to get to sites quickly if required.
Branding is subtle rather than overt, with colour being
carefully selected from the orange and teal palettes of the
two original companies and applied to soft furnishings and
lockers. This provides a sense of place and offers a vibrant
backdrop to the workplace.
The space is very fluid and agile enabling staff work in any
place, at any time and to choose a setting that is suitable for the
particular task in hand. For instance, project-specific teams can
sit together when they are in the office and work out best
solutions for a particular issue. The Finance and IT support
teams are also based here. The large, central breakout space
acts as a town hall in which Matt Bray or Paul Vinten can update
the team on project progress and general business matters.
The interior fit-out is also one that
Paragon is proud of; this is “what
they do” and they do it well,
with joinery and attention to
detail on finishes being of
the utmost importance.

111 Old Broad street is a light and airy space with large deep
floorplates. The challenge was to maximise the natural light
into the depth of the space. The reception was a case in point
where seating adjoins the exterior façade to allow light to
penetrate into the space. The palette of materials was selected
by Resonate for longevity and solidity, contrasting modern
Corian with solid concrete and oak panelling – a traditional
British building material. The meeting rooms are located just
off this space, allowing an easy transgression from reception,
to lounge area to meeting room. The manifestations of
the meeting rooms had varying degrees of transparency but
were a play on structural steel supports, again reflecting the
construction heritage. Subtle references to both brands are
found in soft furnishings, lockers and bespoke carpet design
within the hub.
The centrepiece of the office is the café hub, this is the
go-to-location in the office for serendipitous meetings,
project discussions or lunch breaks. Resonate selected
a deliberate and eclectic mix of furnishings which allows a
variety of settings from café to lounge to bar height. This is
the heart of the space and has a warm, homely feeling,
with carpet tiles imitating Spanish tiles and a wie range
of pendant light fittings over various seating areas. To the back-end of the core workspace there are three project
rooms with clever pivoting metal mesh screens which provide
semi-private spaces. All of these rooms are fitted with AV,
making it a useful space for small teams to dive into for quiet
time or small meetings.
Matt Bray, director of Paragon Interserve commented:
“Overall, this is not a corporate scheme but one with depth
and warmth, successfully designed and delivered by Resonate
that will support the business for years to come. This space
reflects exactly what Paragon does, which is delivering
beautifully appointed workplaces with a high attention
to detail.”

re-thinking the commute
Nille Juul-Sorenson, global business leader for architecture at Arup, discusses how design
can be harnessed to improve the commuter experience...
What is the most stressful part of your day? According to
research, it is likely to be your commute, as studies indicate
that people find getting to work even more stressful than the
jobs they do. Longer, heavily populated commutes are the
natural result of a rapidly growing urban population. Add to
this the unpredictable British weather, delays and congestion
– and you have the ideal recipe for a fraught commuting
experience.
Although it is true that a number of these factors are out
of our hands, many of the frustrations felt by commuters
are the bi-product of poor station design. Below are the
most significant of these, and how they could – and are –
being resolved through passenger-sensitive station design:
Claustrophobia
Claustrophobia – the fear of confined spaces – affects around
10% of the UK population and results in heightened stress
and anxiety. Descending into confined spaces underground
can cause feelings of claustrophobia, while artificial lighting
can make navigating a metro network even more complex.
When we design a house or an office building, daylight is a

primary consideration, however, this is rarely factored into
the design of our transport systems.
Introducing a whole new lighting scheme would be a big step
in making commuters’ journeys more acceptable. New York
City’s Fulton Center, a subway station and shopping centre,
and Copenhagen’s Cityringen, provide prime examples of
how this can be achieved. Both use a combination of skylights
and reflective materials to direct sunlight into the stations
below. In Copenhagen these systems enable natural light
to permeate 20m below ground level.
Ticket barriers
Even when you make it through the gates first time,
the experience of moving through any ticketed area or
barrier makes you acutely aware that you’re transitioning to a
different, monitored environment – which is stressful in itself.
In the near future, we’ll see technology resolve this problem,
with systems that automatically register and charge

passengers as they enter trains. This will reduce station
congestion and make the passenger experience one of
smooth continuity – right from the station to the train.
Unintentional encounters
Whether it is spotting the least crowded carriage or avoiding
a boisterous group on their way to a party, poor visibility on
public transport can lead to commuters unintentionally
entering into uncomfortable situations.
Stations in Copenhagen’s Cityringen have been specifically
designed to help commuters avoid these problems.
Descending the escalators to the trains, all passengers will
be able to view the whole platform, enabling them to decide
which carriage they’d like to be in, or whether they’d prefer
to hang back and wait for the next train.
Wayfinding
Navigating your way through a station – even one you know
well – can be a confusing and stressful experience. Ironically
a barrage of signage can actually make this even more
stressful and is often unhelpful for foreign visitors. More and
more station designers are waking up to the idea of using
intuitive design to create stations that clearly channel
passengers towards the platform using less aggressive
techniques, such as lighting and block colours.
Rubbish and dirt
If people see rubbish, they are more likely to litter – it is
crowd behaviour in action. One way that you can avoid the
accumulation of dirt is through introducing easy-to-clean
materials into stations, or ones that disguise common sources
of grime. During the planning stages for Copenhagen we
studied the foods that people commonly consumed in the
stations. With hot dogs and chocolate milk being the popular
choices, we specifically chose a wall coating that could be
easily be wiped clean of these products.
DP200
The busiest train stations in the UK recorded
almost 100 million entries and exits in the last
year and this number is growing all the time.
Major design changes to stations of this scale
and investment in infrastructure on this level
can be costly in both time and money, but,
when we consider that over 1.3 billion people
a year travel on London’s underground alone,
the widespread and long-term benefits of
station improvements in urban regions across
the nation more than value for money.
Through intuition and careful consideration,
drawing on inspiration from existing
programmes across the globe, we can
combat this day-to-day stress by re-designing
our commute.

ABC+D takes a look at a selection of the
seminar topics being discussed at this year’s
Vision London event...
Technology and engineering are evolving at a faster rate than at any other
time in history to help the construction industry meet new challenges,
presenting new ways of creating homes and other types of buildings
quickly, efficiently and cost effectively. Vision – the event for architects,
specifiers and their clients – will feature several areas of innovation in its
Future Materials and Systems seminar stream at London's Olympia on
7/8 June:
1. Nanoparticles
Nanoparticles added to construction materials, such as cement, concrete
and steel, are promising to deliver significant improvements, including
greater strength and offering new properties like self-healing and selfcleaning. In his presentation on 7 June, Dr Bojan Boskovic will consider
how the use of carbon nanomaterials can open up new possibilities for
sustainable design strategies, improve the nature of building structures
and provide a new array of functions that can improve interaction between
buildings and their occupants.
Introducing CRL’s new range of
oil dynamic hinges
for self-closing
glass doors
2. Innovating from nature
Sustainable design approaches have brought us organic forms in
architecture and innovation in the use of natural materials, like timber.
Some are developing bolder visions, with research exploring how nature
could more radically shape our city and help the built environment to
withstand potential environmental challenges. Leading visionaries and
future-gazers, Melissa Sterry and Rachel Armstrong, will both be sharing
their ideas in presentations at
Vision on 7 June.
3. Circular economy
There is a growing focus
within industry generally
on the circular economy –
the principle of using resources
wisely by ensuring products
and materials are designed at
the outset for durability and
recycling. On the first day of
Vision, a team from the Alliance
for Sustainable Building
Products’ (ASBP) Reusable
Buildings Network will give
an update on two innovative
projects on steel reuse within
construction.
DP205
4. Robotics
Manpower has been replaced by machine in many areas of
construction and the advance of technology looks set to continue. Robotic
fabrication
will change the way we build, is the title of a technology talk at Vision on
8 June by Sebastian Andraos and Federico Rossi.

Building work starts
on £20m luxury hotel
Edinburgh’s ambition to provide more luxury
accommodation for future visitors has received
a major boost, after work started on a new,
£20m four-star hotel in the city’s Old Town.
The 98-room boutique hotel is the first venture
in Edinburgh by European operator, The Carlton
Hotel Collection, and is being delivered in
partnership with The EDI Group.
Having received international recognition
at MIPIM Future Awards for its design plans to
create a building that complements its historic
surroundings, the development will transform a key, under-used site on Market Street,
located next to Craig’s Close, which has remained vacant for more than 50 years.
Situated within the UNESCO World Heritage and Old Town Conservation Area,
construction of the hotel also marks the completion of the last remaining gap site on
the northern boundary of the Old Town, between Edinburgh Castle and North Bridge.
Due to open in Spring 2018, visitors to the hotel will be able to enjoy a top-floor
lounge with panoramic views across the Waverley Valley from Princes Street Gardens
to Calton Hill.
Councillor Gavin Barrie, chair at The EDI Group said: “Delivering an outstanding luxury
hotel in the heart of Edinburgh’s Old Town is a significant moment for the city’s tourism
and leisure industry. The design of the building carefully balances old and new to
support the city’s heritage status and we’re delighted that a key, under-used site for
the city will be brought back into use for residents and visitors to enjoy.”
Construction blacklisting victory
sees £10m pay-out to 256 workers
The biggest blacklisting scandal in UK
construction industry history has seen
its court case end in victory as 256 workers
are set to receive more than £10m in
compensation.
Unite said that the pay-outs could range
from £25,000 up to £200,000 per claimant,
depending on such factors as the loss of
income and the seriousness of the defamation.
Unite’s determined legal stance resulted in
a further £4m for 97 of the 256 claimants,
whose original compensation offers the union
deemed inadequate. This brought the total
compensation package to £10,435,000.
At the centre of the scandal were the
machinations of the secretive Consulting
Association which was raided by the
Information Commissioner in 2009.
Unite general secretary, Len McCluskey, said:
“The massive scale of the agreed damages
shows the gravity of the misdeeds of these
major construction companies which created
and used the Consulting Group as a vehicle to
enable them to blacklist trade unionists on
behalf of more than 30 construction
companies.”

responds to
London Mayoral
election
Housing was a top priority for both
candidates during the Mayoral election
campaign and now Sadiq Khan needs
to prove that theory can be turned into
practice. London is facing huge
challenges, including the lack of
affordable homes and the significant
shortage of skilled labour, which will be
exacerbated due to the ageing workforce.
Sadiq Khan has laid out his proposal to
establish Homes for Londoners, a new
team in City Hall made up of local councils
which will seek to build new homes on
land owned by the Mayor’s office. He has
also promised to develop other public
sector land and exercise “use it or lose it”
powers to make sure developers who
have planning permission actually build
homes and don’t land-bank.
Khan’s blanket target for 50% of all
new homes in London to be genuinely
affordable could result in fewer homes
actually being built, as developers focus
on more profitable developments.
His plans to utilise £400m of the Mayor’s
affordable homes budget to support a
target of 80,000 homes per year for
Housing Associations will be challenging
in the current environment where there is
a lack of funding compounded by a lack of
a sufficiently skilled workforce to enable
that demand to be met.
The city urgently needs to speed up the
building of new houses for home owners
and build-to-rent investors to provide
sufficient options for the London
population. Affordable housing and
social housing should also be a priority.
Balancing all these needs is a challenging
task. This is likely to become even more
complicated in the context of the new
Housing & Planning Bill and potential
Brexit factors that could further unbalance
the construction labour market.

HS2 commercial director calls
for prioritised collaboration
“Success must cascade down the UK’s invaluable and innovative supply
chain with all project partners better incentivised to deliver shared
objectives,” Beth West, commercial director of HS2, told this year’s NEC
Users’ Group Seminar.
In her first keynote speech to more than 240 NEC contract users at
the Institution of Civil Engineers’ headquarters in London, Beth called
for a widespread cultural change to contractual structures and a greater
emphasis on shared success.
She said that better collaboration and project outcomes can be
realised and risk more fairly shared, when contracts intrinsically link all
contractors to “specific and strategic objectives’” not only the isolated
delivery of their service discipline.
Beth commented: “There is so much more we can do. I know
of examples of people putting the contract on the shelf once procured.
That fills me with horror. We must select contractors on their ability
to deliver the project’s strategic objectives, not services alone.”
She continued: “So many elements of UK Construction are delivered
by sub-contractors, many of whom do get squeezed in fixed-price
contracts. We must ensure success cascades down and that full project
collaboration is incentivised. We need to share success at a time when
we are, as an industry, desperately short of resources.”

Pledge your support
for the Lighthouse Club
18–20 OCTOBER
Construction industry charity, The Lighthouse Club, is calling
on firms and employees across the sector to vote for it to benefit
from a £20,000 donation pot pledged by Hudson Contract to
mark its 20th anniversary.
The Lighthouse Club is one of just four charities that can benefit
from the generous initiative being launched by the construction
audit, contract and payroll provider to celebrate its birthday and
give something back to both the industry and leading good
causes.
Anyone can vote for their preferred charity at
www.hudsoncontract.co.uk/choose-your-charity with each one
receiving a percentage of the £20,000 pot based on the total
number of votes it receives online before Friday 27 May.
The four charities appealing for the nation’s vote are: Cardiac
Risk in the Young (CRY); Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI);
Children with Cancer UK and The Lighthouse Club – construction
industry charity dedicated to providing support to workers and
their families
Ian Anfield, managing director of Hudson Contract,
commented: “What better way to celebrate 20 years in business
than by launching a charity initiative that will make a real
difference to four fantastic causes that are very dear to our hearts.
With us having worked in the construction industry for 20 years,
we also wanted to ensure that The Lighthouse Club was included
as it provides such invaluable support to workers and their
families. Voting takes seconds and we’d urge everyone in
the industry to pledge their vote online before 27 May.”

Zero carbon homes – back again
or just back on the agenda?
Graham Suttill, sustainable buildings assessor, Darren Evans Assessments
commented: “During the Lords Report Stage of the Housing and
Planning Bill, the House of Lords defeated the Government on the zero
carbon homes amendment. The defeat – by 48 votes – could see the
reintroduction of Zero Carbon Homes, the on-site carbon compliance
standard which the Government, rather surprisingly, scrapped last July.
“So, all good news? Well, yes and no. While it is a clear sign that there is
still much belief in the Zero Carbon Homes standard, the Bill will now go
back to the Commons and could enter months of prolonged to-ing and
fro-ing where both Houses of Parliament seek to pass their respective
versions of the Bill. However, the outcome could see Government ensure
all new homes in England built from 1 April 2018 achieve the carbon
compliance standard.
“It’s fair to say, the scrapping of the policy was met with very little –
if any – support. In the eyes of many it was culled post-election so
that housebuilders had one less hurdle to jump through and, in doing
so, would help to kick-start housebuilding. However this is a very naive
and short-term view. Killing Zero Carbon Homes simply reinforced the
view that the Government has very little understanding of green policies
and any idea in terms of a long-term strategy to create more sustainable
housing.”

new RIBA-approved CPD from Geberit
designing quiet bathrooms –
Geberit’s new RIBA-approved Embedding Acoustics in Design CPD helps the specifier identify the
source of sanitaryware noise and offers advice on how to design quiet bathrooms for hotels,
apartments and offices. ABC+D finds out more...
Providing a technical insight and definition of noise and its
causes, the CPD covers current British Standards relating to
limiting bathroom sound, plus Geberit’s thorough approach
to noise reduction, which starts with good design and ends
with appropriate product choices and correct installation
techniques. Backed by Geberit’s own UK installation
techniques and research, which takes place in its dedicated
sound laboratory, Embedding Acoustics into Design, provides
a detailed guide to creating quiet British bathrooms.
Embedding Acoustics in Design – what’s included:
• Identification of the cause of noise’(cisterns, water in
the soil stack etc)
• Importance of considering acoustics at the design stage
• How to design a quiet bathroom; looking at pipe layout,
piping and sanitaryware types
• Overview of current legislation
• Geberit’s own laboratory data detailing the decibels (dBs)
DP210
Bathroom noises, caused by sanitaryware and behind-thescenes pipework, can be an issue in multiple floored
buildings, such as hotels, offices and apartments,
disturbing guests and occupants trying to
sleep or work in these environments.
To help architects, specifiers and
M&E contractors understand
and combat this problem,
Geberit has launched
According to Geberit’s own

of bathroom sounds and the effect design, product choices
and installation techniques have on reducing dBs.
Victoria Willis, head of piping and product management for
Geberit commented: “According to Geberit’s own research,
90% of people have been disturbed by waste water noise,
with 55% of tenants stating they’d pay a little more rent if
bathroom noises were reduced. This shows the importance
of sound reduction – particularly in high end hotels and
apartments. In our opinion, it is not always dealt with properly
or even considered at any length at the design and planning
stage, when in reality it’s incredibly important – getting a
good night’s sleep is a priority for most people.”

find paradise with eden
The range of self-contained Kinedo shower cubicles from Saniflo has been extended with
the addition of Eden. ABC+D takes a look...
The new cubicle features polished chrome profiles
and external glass panels plus internal panels in
opaque white glass. As with all Kinedo cubicles,
they are completely leak-free with no requirement for
silicone or grout. The glass panels are all coated with
Cristal Plus, a permanent, anti-limescale coating that
minimises the build-up of calcium deposits and dirt
and encourages water to run off the glass without
leaving hard to clean water marks and streaks.

SE Controls feels the power with Bristol’s Electricity House development
Electricity House, Crest Nicholson Homes’ stylish city centre apartment
development in Bristol is using an advanced smoke ventilation system
from leading smoke and natural ventilation specialist, SE Controls, to
help keep residents safe if a fire should occur.
Originally designed by acclaimed architect Sir Giles Gilbert Scott in the
1930s, the six-storey Grade II listed building has being converted into
85 luxury apartments, while ensuring that many of the original design
features are retained or reinstated to enhance its art deco style.
The building’s main atrium is at the heart of the SE Controls solution, as
the smoke ventilation system is designed to vent smoke from the atrium
in the event of a fire to ensure escape routes are kept clear.
To achieve this, SE Controls designed, installed and commissioned the
system, which comprises 37 SHEVTEC® automatically controlled
louvres, which are manufactured and tested in accordance with
BS EN 12101: 2. The SHEVTEC® louvres also incorporate ‘fall protection’
to increase safety, as well as using IP rated external motors, which are
essential to allow easy access for future maintenance.
A further 21 low level air inlet louvres and linear door actuators also form
part of the system, all of which are controlled by a series of OS2 control
panels with integral battery back up and fully compliant with the
relevant sections of the BS EN 12101 standard.
SE Controls’ Business Development Manager, Stuart Coote, commented:
“Electricity House is a landmark building designed by an iconic British
architect, so we’re delighted to have played a part in this project.
as the Smoke Control Association, FIRAS and British Standards, to
ensure that design, manufacturing, installation and maintenance
standards are constantly being maintained. Although this is important
for the industry, the real benefit is for residents who rely on our systems
for failsafe performance, if a fire should occur.”
“Smoke control and fire safety is not only a core part of our business,
but also an area we’re very actively involved with via organisations such

Schöck offers an effective alternative to wrapped parapets
Minimises thermal bridges with no maintenance required
and has associated long term
risks. However, the new Schöck
Isokorb type AXT offers a costeffective and more thermally
efficient alternative. Its 120mm
insulation thickness results in low
psi-values and therefore
significantly reduces heat loss –
and there is no wrapping required.
It permits a more sophisticated
construction opportunity for
greater freedom of design and
allows flexible distance between
elements according to load
requirements. An added benefit
being that there is no risk of any
additional thermal bridging
through balustrade fixings.
It is well documented that parapets allow
conductive materials to transfer energy through
the thermal barrier and are therefore just as prone
to the problems of thermal bridging as balconies.
In the majority of cases, the conventional method
of insulating parapets is to wrap the perimeter of
the wall with an insulation barrier. This is costly
Other key factors in the selection
criteria for suitable solutions are
durability and water impermeability.
The Isokorb type AXT solution does not require
maintenance and there is no risk of expensive
restoration due to waterproofing problems.
Wrapped components are similar in principle to an
insulated flat roof, with many of the associated
problems. They are prone to damage and almost
inevitable repair and maintenance outlay;
particularly where railings or covers pierce the
insulating layer. With thermally separated
parapets, railings and covers can be
attached directly into the concrete. The
Isokorb type AXT is assessed as a ‘Certified
Passive House Component’; provides BBA
Certification, LABC Registration and NHBC
approval and meets full compliance with
the relevant UK building regulations. The
temperature factor used to indicate
condensation risk for occupants in
residential or commercial buildings – the
(fRsi) value – must be equal to or greater
than 0.75 or 0.50 respectively, and is
comfortably met by incorporating the
Isokorb. In addition, there is also
compliance with the Government
Standard Assessment Procedure, SAP
2012,
concerning CO2
emissions from
buildings and
respectively
heat losses
through nonrepeating thermal

New, pre-insulated pipe systems
DP221
Maincor has partnered with Danish manufacturer, LOGSTOR,
to supply the Flextra range of pre-insulated pipes in the UK.
The systems are suitable for connecting buildings to external
renewable heat sources, such as heat pumps and biomass boilers.
The extremely low heat loss of Flextra pipe means that hot water
or heating water can be supplied into the building maintaining the
water temperature as it travels underground, ensuring a high level
of energy efficiency while saving money on running costs.
The range includes both heating (PexFlextra) and hot water
(SaniFlextra) pipe solutions and is available with single or twin
internal pipe configurations to provide flexibility around the project design. All Flextra pipes include
a built-in diffusion barrier to retain full insulation properties throughout the entire service life of the
pipe, meaning that the thermal performance won’t degrade over time.

fermacell flags up
its flooring credentials
fermacell has launched a comprehensive
guide to planning and installing its dry
flooring systems. The 64-page A4 manual
details how fermacell’s dry flooring
systems are a practical and cost-effective
alternative to conventional wet screed
to concrete floors and how their excellent
thermal conductivity makes them a very
efficient overlay to underfloor heating
systems. In addition, an optional wood
fibre layer to the gypsum fibreboard base
gives it excellent acoustic properties.
The brochure details the advantages of
working with fermacell flooring systems
(their light weight and dry and fast
installation times, for example) and gives
an overview of areas of application such as
home, office, retail and areas where people
congregate, as well as the loads to factor
in for each.

doors, windows & architectural hardware – round table
to conserve and protect:
shutting the door on energy
loss and air pollution
Energy usage is coming under increased scrutiny, with news from the National
Grid warning of an eleven-week energy shortage by winter 2016, and the Hinkley
Point C nuclear power station looking unlikely to ever go into commission.
There is never a good time to be wasting energy but now, more than ever, retail
businesses need to be doing all they can to both conserve energy and protect
employees and customers. ABC+D’s Claire Mackle recently met with door and
window controls manufacturer, GEZE UK, sponsor of the Close the Door
campaign, and a selection of industry professionals to discuss the energy saving
benefits of supporting the campaign and how, by using closed and automatic
doors, air pollution can also be minimised in the internal environment...
Choice of entrance solution
Q: What are the main considerations when specifying
doors for retail outlets?
PG: M&S have a variety of different types of doors across our
estate. If the doors are made of glass we make sure the glass
is insulated. Another consideration is the maintenance cost
attached to the type of doors we’re using. My energy
department works with the engineering team on the design
and specification and we then educate individual stores on
how to operate them. At our Stratford Westfield branch we
installed a double set of entrance doors to form a foyer as
the air outside was creating a wind tunnel into the store.
EB: I think the reason people go into retail stores is for the
experience. In terms of the entrance, we want to make it as
welcoming as possible. We don't want to create obstacles.
An open door would have serious consequences on the
internal experience in terms of comfort, temperature
fluctuation, interior air quality and draughts. I think we should
look at how we can use architecture to create a beautiful
experience for both customers and staff. My perspective is
very focused on health and wellbeing, active design, the use
of colours, the look and feel and also thermal and visual
comfort.
PB: In terms of acquiring existing assets, the choice
of door will be affected by what is originally in place
and also, from an aesthetic point of view, whether it works
within the context of the surrounding area and creates the
right look and feel. An entrance has to portray a welcoming
environment, so that will factor into the design.
Certainly the practicalities are a key driver.
KS: Elisa has captured the essence really. As a manufacturer
we have a number of reference sites that will be either historic
buildings or very modern projects. Requirements often differ
in terms of aesthetics, environmental goals and energy
concerns. Each of our customers has some or all of those
demands. It is these projects that we probably enjoy the most.
We much prefer to work with a customer that is switched on
close the door
Close the Door is a business-friendly initiative working with retailers and restaurants to save significant amounts
of energy and greatly reduce exposure to hazardous components of air pollution inside, by closing the door when
heating/air conditioning are being used or when there are high levels of air pollution on the street outside.
Independent research data is from Cambridge University engineering department on store doors and energy,
and Imperial College/Kings College London on in-store air quality. Findings were a total energy saving of up to 50%

pollution ( NOx, black carbon and PM2.5 ) when the door was closed in trading hours. Original research can be found at www.closethedoor.org.uk

of all types and sizes backing the campaign.
with an environmental or aesthetic challenge because
that's where, hopefully, we create the most value.
Q: Do you have automatic doors in all of your stores?
PG: You have to operate within the requirements of the
Disability Discrimination Act and the Equality Act 2010.
If you don’t use automatic doors then you should specify
push button access solutions. We also use revolving doors.
Similar to John Lewis, our estate consists of historic grade
listed buildings through to modern, new developments,
meaning the spec can differ wildly.
PB: We certainly will be compliant with the minimum legal
requirements and we also have dedicated professionals
examining customer journeys and designers looking at the
practicality and functionality, followed by engineers and
energy managers looking at running costs. As with any
large retail business, energy is a huge aspect and the risk,
particularly around security of supply is a huge issue so, yes,
we have lots of people looking into how we can be as efficient
as possible in our operations so this is a topic that people will
be well versed in.
Q: What are the reasons for not using automatic doors?
PB: There may be some historic buildings that have
architecturally interesting doors and lobbies where you
can't install automatic doors. I can think of one or two
with rotating doors.
There may be scenarios where a store is a tenant in a bigger
scheme which is close to the entrance but they don’t have
any direct control over that space. However, when we are
occupying this type of scheme we have a very close
relationship with the developer and ensure they are aware
of our baseline specifications so that we get across what
we are looking for.
Design
Q: How important is it to consider sustainability during
the design or retrofit stage?
PG: If you don't consider something at the design stage,
the cost of making changes is 80-100% more expensive.
So it's always important to get it right at the design stage
so that you don't end up paying to make corrections.
Q: What other options or solutions are available
if automatic doors are not appropriate?
PG: Our Simply Food stores specification is to always
use automatic doors as far as I know. However, we evaluate
every store individually due to planning regulations.
disabled. However, a better solution is automatic
doors. The whole subject of accessibility is at the
forefront of everybody's minds so, really, it's back
to this designing-in when you can because it's going
to be a lot cheaper and easier to integrate if you do
that.
Perceptions of an open door policy
Q: What are the challenges to adoption of the
Close the Door campaign across all stores?
PB: We're a signatory to the campaign but not
withstanding that, there's a challenge to any sort
of movement and it will be making sure everyone
is aware of the benefits offered, de-risking it and
convincing people that it's not going to cost more
or that it's not going to restrict access.
It may be that there is an opinion from certain
individuals that closing a door might restrict footfall.
I think, generally, we're pretty good at closing the
door. We recognise the benefits of doing it so,
thankfully, I'm not having to work too hard to
convince people. But I do think that if I asked
someone on a different team whether they were
aware of the impact, they probably wouldn't
understand the significance of some of the statistics,
so it’s a case of changing perception to fully
recognise how important it is.
PG: M&S are also a signatory to the campaign.
We try to educate our store colleagues as much as
possible. Some people still think that if a customer
sees a door closed, they're not going to come in.
I don’t think there's enough publicly available
research or statistics demonstrating that it doesn't
affect footfall.

JD: I think leaving the door open is going to become
very unpopular very soon because the air pollution
stats are really recent and people, on the whole,
don't know about them. (The current death toll
statistics from air pollution in London are 10,000 a
year and 30,000 across the UK as a whole). I can tell
you that the mums groups that do know about the
air pollution stats don't want to shop in stores
that don't close their doors.
CM: So it's an education project really isn't it?
KSum: Certainly for some of the smaller stores, there are
manual control and self-closing solutions that can allow doors
to close. In a lot of older buildings these can be retrofitted.
Automatic doors are a great solution but if they are not an
option then manual control systems are also a good solution.
They are aesthetic, they can be under floor, they can be built
into the door design itself and different colour options are
also available. They can also be sustainable without affecting
overall design.
JD: It's a huge education project. A lot of the
retailers I've come across, and there are lots
who say footfall will suffer, tend to be slightly old
fashioned, especially when it comes to sales.
The door issue is highlighted much more when
people can see that energy is being wasted during
the winter months. In the summer, particularly
without air con, the air pollution problem is invisible
and it’s important to educate people to realise that
it's just as important for them then that the doors
are closed.
KS: Regarding accessibility, there are manual door controls
available which are preset for regulations for access by the

boiling in one area and draughty in another. Also, that you
cannot provide CIBSE guidelines for a healthy working
temperature if you don't close the door with the heating on.
If the door is open then the temperature variation will be far
too extreme.
LT: Jeannie, do you find that you experience more problems
with smaller retailers keeping their doors closed?
JD: The independents are generally very good because they
pay their own energy bills.
JD: I know a lot of people don't prefer open doors,
including disabled groups.
PG: There doesn’t appear to be sufficient research around
this topic publicly available, to actively promote what the
customer thinks. My team’s objective is to save energy,
reduce cost and consider the environment, as well as promote
collaboration with colleagues to work in the best interest
of our customers and employees.
JD: There are lots of companies that close the door across
the board and they have all done their own research.
They wouldn't be closing their doors if it was a problem for
profit. So, the research is there but, unfortunately, retailers
don't want to share it due to it being competitive information.
PB: I think customers, especially of larger retail units,
are probably just used to the fact that that's how we do it.
There is perhaps a difference with testing it in, say, hospitality
and restaurant environments. If you went to a retail park and
you tested three of them there with the doors closed and one
with the door open and they're all similar style restaurants,
did everyone go into the one with the door open? I don't
think that's the case.
JD: Costa has closed the door across its estate and it's very
clear that in the hospitality industry they have a huge interest
in keeping the door closed. Kids don't run out; you're much
more comfortable. It's been done and demonstrated.
PB: I haven't heard grumblings that it’s a huge customer
driven issue.
PG: I would say that both customers and employees prefer
a comfortable store environment.
JD: The Cambridge study has proven that a closed door
provides a uniform heat across the store, so that you're not
Q: How can you balance aesthetics with curb appeal?
Can you combine the welcome factor with sustainability?
EB: From an architectural perspective, visual appeal,
aesthetics and the use of colour can all contribute to the
welcome factor, but we also need to consider the quality
of the retail environment itself. I think it is important to think
about the customers and what they really value and care
about and, personally, I am not convinced their priority is
whether they need to open a door or not to enter a retail
space.
In terms of sustainability, I think we should communicate
to the customer what a closed door means for their health as
opposed to an open door. Customers are there for shopping,
and I am not sure they are making the link between feeling
good in a particular space with the fact that the door is closed
or open. We should be more proactive in communicating to
them the benefits of shutting out air pollution and avoiding
thermal discomfort: closing the door is not only good for
energy saving, but also for promoting people’s health and
wellbeing. I believe this is a crucial factor in support of the
Close the Door campaign and a company’s brand values.
JD: It is becoming increasingly clear that customers think that
entrances are important and if these are left open it makes
them very suspicious as to whether the company is actually
carrying out what it claims to be doing in CSR generally.
PG: It's a fine line between balancing greenwashing and
aesthetics. Certain shopping centre developments are driven
by brand. It's all about selling luxury and what fits with that,
be it marble floors or glass etc. The energy side of it may only
become apparent due to a tight planning schedule. Retailers
often have to fit in with the development/developer if they
want to occupy that particular space.
EB: We are working our clients to create buildings that
optimise occupant’s health as well as environmental
outcomes, places that both staff and customers can truly
enjoy. It is now clear that energy efficiency alone is not
sufficient to demonstrate brand excellence, as in most cases
it is something that must be done anyway to comply with
regulatory standards. With global trends showing an
increasing focus on wellbeing, organisations have an
imperative to boost the health and wellbeing performance
of their building portfolio, and I definitely think this is going
to have a powerful impact on both the retail experience and
sales performance.

Health and wellbeing
Q: Do you record whether illnesses aggravated by
pollution (such as asthma) are causing staff sickness?
PB: I think it's probably very difficult to track what has caused
absenteeism specifically. We've spoken a lot today about the
customer, yet arguably I would say that the staff have more
of a vested interest in this because they are the ones that are
going to be exposed to air pollution for far longer periods
and are therefore more at risk.
We are certainly looking at indoor air quality as being
a factor of things like BREEAM and other environmental
assessment methods, and Part L and Building Regulations
will dictate air change rates and so on. I'm looking into how
we weave more granularity into design standards. Health and
wellbeing has got a lot of traction and we've been monitoring
things like productivity versus general happiness. As you
know, health and happiness tend to go hand in hand.
We know there's a correlation; we know it makes sense to
do it, so the challenge with that is just with quantification.
So, going back to your question, we certainly want to track
and understand if there are health impacts through air
pollution and want to try and prevent it. However, I think
it would be difficult to track.
KS: Without data, it's pretty difficult even for even the
Government to communicate what's going on. I think we
should focus on the reverse of this which is best practice.
Close the Door proves that a 30% reduction in particulate
can be achieved in the internal environment. If you are closing
your doors then you are doing the best you can to prevent
staff sickness.
JD: The research data is there showing that a lot of these
deaths from air pollution are concentrated around working
on the road and close to busy roads. A lot of the high street
shops are on these roads which presents an accentuated risk.
PB: You can track pollutant concentration on somewhere like
Oxford Street and you can map out how that disperses from
the centre of the road, but to then track how many staff in
those buildings have had some sort of respiratory problem
as a result proves difficult. It's often down to increased
mortality – people dying sooner than they should have.
It's very difficult to pin point how this is a direct result
of an air polluted bus route for example.
It's a big, big issue definitely.
“
The current death toll
statistics from air
pollution in London are
10,000 a year and 30,000

as a whole
JD: One of the big problems
is that a lot of people working
in retail feel they have
absolutely no voice; that they
may lose their jobs if they ask
for better conditions. Shop
workers are a very fluid and
quite often badly paid group
of people. It is important that
responsible retailers take the lead.
PG: I know Marks & Spencer records illness across the
business. If we had high absenteeism, we would look at what
the possible reasons for this were. Similarly, we have a very
strong voice like John Lewis Partnership amongst our
employees where they would raise the concerns. So I don't
think that they would feel that they would be ostracised for
complaining. However, there are also so many other health
factors that can contribute to respiratory illnesses. It would
be very hard to monitor.
Q: Will today's discussions affect your thoughts about
keeping the door closed and the solutions available?
PG: I don't think it will change M&S policy. I think it will
just reinvigorate the question around education and
communication with employees and customers, not just
from an energy perspective but also from a health and
wellbeing point of view.
PB: Likewise, we are aware of the issue but I am thinking,
as a quick exercise, of looking at mapping out some of
our stores against some of the areas of higher pollution risk
and even thinking about looking at more modern trends.
We monitor air change rates and thermal comfort but we
don't necessarily use NOx tubes or anything like that. I know
from having spent years monitoring sites that they are pretty
easy to install and check, so that would be quite a useful
exercise. Particularly at somewhere like Oxford Street.
Q: How are you planning to move
the campaign forward Jeannie?
JD: There is work to be done with the Health
and Safety Executive as some interesting legislation on
preventing businesses unnecessarily exposing the workforce
to airbourne pollutants has come to light.
A Member of Parliament is putting together a cross-party
working group on the aims of the campaign, and it is now
clearly vital to inform and involve customers as, to date, it has
largely been based around the retailers.

energy saving, air pollution and the

A fresh outlook for elderly residents
CMS Window Systems has completed a project with Fife Council
to deliver high quality new homes for elderly residents in a
pioneering care village concept. The development on Ostler’s Way,
Kirkcaldy, forms part of an extensive initiative by Fife Council to
create a supportive community for older people in the local area.
In addition to a 60-bed care home, its residential facilities include
a cluster of purpose-built bungalows for independent supported
living. With ten years’ extensive experience providing building envelope solutions for the local authority and
social housing sectors, CMS’ reputation for product quality, environmental sustainability and long-term
performance saw the company awarded a £164,000 contract by Fife Council to provide glazing and
composite doors for the new bungalows at the site. The primary focus of the development was on creating
comfortable, welcoming living conditions for the elderly residents. To meet the brief, CMS installed lowmaintenance PVCu casement windows with a sophisticated grey and white finish. Attractive Masterdor
composite doors were also installed, featuring patterned glass panels and an appealing textured finish.

Senior takes care of light and space
DP242
Windows and curtain walling from Senior Architectural System’s
Hybrid range have met the requirements of an exacting design brief
from NPS Architects to be successfully specified for use on a new
care home in Gorleston, near Great Yarmouth. Lydia Eva Court has
been specifically designed to enable people with dementia to live as
independently as possible. The construction of Senior’s Hybrid range,
which combines the durability of aluminium externally with the
environmental benefits of timber internally, made it a suitable choice
for the project. Featuring the slim sightline of Senior’s Hybrid Series 2
windows in addition to Hybrid Series 1 windows that complement the Hybrid Series 3 curtain wall
system, the new care home also benefits from Senior’s robust SD doors. Fabricated and installed by
supply chain partner Ali Systems, the glazing systems have helped maximise the flow of light into the
interior spaces to provide exceptional performance and a low maintenance solution.
New Flat Bar sliding shutter
DP243
An ultra-slim solar control system has been created by
Hunter Douglas to meet the demands of the most modern
of building designs. At just 5mm thick, the minimalist Flat
Bar shutter is at least 50% thinner than existing
alternatives. Pieter van Rees, European marketing manager
at Hunter Douglas, said the beauty of the Flat Bar shutter’s
aluminium frame is that it is as unobtrusive as possible to
meet the architects’ aesthetic requirements. “Even the
screws used to attach the fins are less conspicuous, as we had them powder-coated along with the
fins to make sure all of the system’s components have the same colour,” he said. “That way, the parts
used for mounting the system don’t stand out.” The powder-coating treatment means that only the
S and Z fins are suitable for use with Flat Bar; if hollow fins were used, the coating would seep in,
which would affect the system’s quality.

New energy-efficient automatic door delivers
the looks and performance
Gilgen Door Systems has launched a new energy-efficient automatic
door which overcomes the limitations often associated with thermally
insulated products, delivering a solution which is both elegant in
appearance and efficient in operation. The Gilgen PST <green wings>
sliding door comes with low-profile slimline looks and offers
outstanding energy performance, expressed as ‘U’ values, enabling
entrances to be built sustainably without compromising design.
The technologically advanced Gilgen SLX-M drive and energy-efficient
PST door profiles combine to form a single unit. As part of the Gilgen
<green wings> automatic door range, this combination provides a
robust thermal barrier with a low visible profile similar to a standard
automatic door. The design of these doors, with thermally separated
profiles combined with double or
triple glazing goes far beyond that
of conventional sliding doors both in terms of function and
design; the compact drive
mechanism and slim profiles
being well matched to the straight
lines of today’s modern
architecture.
With system ‘U’ values of 1.1 to
1.8, depending on the
configuration, these automatic
doors fulfil the exacting demands
of architects, specifiers and
building owners in a World where
energy efficiency and
sustainability are a growing

Engineering a complete solution
CMS Window Systems has secured a comprehensive building envelope contract for the
University of Brighton’s new, state-of-the-art £14m Advanced Engineering Centre (AEC).
CMS’ drive for continued and sustained growth is being aided by participating in projects
south of the border alongside its long-standing main contractor clients. Working here for main
contractor GRAHAM, CMS will deliver high performance fenestration for the part two and part
three-storey building which is set to provide specialist science-led teaching and research facilities
for advanced automotive engineering. The thermally broken aluminium windows, doors and
curtain walling, manufactured and installed by CMS using Metal Technology systems, are part
of a building design planned to minimise energy use. CMS will fabricate and install more than 380m2 of curtain walling to suit the client’s vibrant design.
Windows with a typical U-value of 1.3 W/m2K, plus doors created using Metal Technology’s System 5-20D Hi+ will complete CMS’ involvement in the project.
Councillor Julie Cattell, chair of Brighton & Council’s planning committee praised the design of the building, especially “the innovative use of materials.”

Hunter Douglas flies high at Goodwood Aerodrome
Hunter Douglas used its engineering and creative expertise to design
a solution for a £1.6m prestige building at Goodwood Aero Club.
The contemporary Aero Club building, designed by London architect
State of the Craft to house the café and flight school at this world-famous
aviation site in Chichester, West Sussex, is visually striking. To complement
this ultra-modern, sleek look, the architects commissioned Hunter Douglas
to design and manufacture 24 fully-automated and motorised external
roller blind systems, each measuring 7.5m2 (80.7ft2) for the predominantly
glass-fronted building. The motorised external roller blinds are protected
from high winds with

A façade experience
Selecting the wrong glass can affect overall
visual performance, resulting in unwanted
glare and reflection while, at the same time,
reducing light transmission and overall
aesthetics. Guardian Clarity is the glass
that can make all the difference. Standard
glazing units reflect light at a level that
may interfere with our ability to see through
the glass easily and clearly. Examples are
shop windows which lose impact due to
distracting reflections, viewing platforms which lose visual accuracy due
to distracting glare and restaurants with breathtaking views that become
completely hidden as soon as the sun goes down. Guardian Industries’
Glass Group in Europe, manufacturer of high performance glass, has
introduced Guardian Clarity anti-reflective glass. Created by using the
most advanced coating technology, Guardian Clarity is suitable for glazing
applications in which excessive glare and reflection create an obstruction
and outstanding transparency is desired.

Cutting-edge curtain walling for Hiscox
DP253
A new structural glazing system from GLASSOLUTIONS
has been specified for Hiscox’s new landmark underwriting
and customer experience centre in York, part of the insurance
company’s £19m investment to create its largest office
outside London. The VS-1 mullion-only system eliminates
the need for horizontal framing members, enabling Make
Architects to achieve clean viewing lines on the curved
atrium screen which forms a key feature of the new building.
The light, airy interior effect is created by the extensive use
of the VS-1 curtain walling. This combines with a cantilevered
concrete frame and undulating woven brickwork façade
to provide a workspace which fosters creativity and
collaboration.
New door and hardware?
Now you see it, now you don’t...
Householders and businesses want to feel
they are safe and secure against criminal
threat and activity. Having a good design
and manufacture alone is not good enough.
The product has to be proven to meet its
needs and the best evidence is independent
third-party testing and certification from
a reputable UKAS-accredited company.
Once supplied it will need to be installed
correctly, as poor installation can reflect badly
on the product. The design and manufacture
is down to the experts, however, the testing
and certification can be undertaken by
experts from a UKAS accredited body
such as IFC Certification.

D R Services now offers modern, switchable glass for
a variety of installations. Architects and interior designers
have always used light as a key influence in design.
Now, thanks to D R Services, switchable glass provides
a bright space with the option of a frosted glass feature
wall or a wall providing transparent viewing. The switchable
glass system contains an electric current within the glass
and when this current is switched off, the glass has a
natural opaque appearance, blocking vision from either side yet still permitting the light to pass
through for a bright room. Switching the electric current off causes the glass to turn transparent
instantly. The D R Services switchable glass is very easy to maintain and boasts low electrical
consumption. Switchable glass is a laminated glass which can be fitted into homes, offices,
glass doors and even room dividers for extra security and privacy.

company spotlight – senior architectural systems
new school puts Senior’s
PURe windows to the test
A new primary school in Derby has become the first completed project in the UK
to feature the new, thermally-efficient PURe windows from fenestration
designer and manufacturer, Senior Architectural Systems...
The new aluminium window system – the first on the
UK market to benefit from an enhanced thermal barrier
manufactured from expanded polyurethane foam (PUR) –
has been specified for use on the new Carlyle Infant School in
Derby. Working alongside main contractor Bowmer & Kirkland
and Bond Bryan architects, Senior’s PURe casement windows
were installed by fabricator Allied Glazing.
Key to the specification of Senior’s PURe windows was
the system’s high thermal performance that not only gives
exceptionally low U-values but also has the potential to
dramatically improve the building’s overall carbon
calculations.
Carl Broadhurst, managing director of Allied Glazing
commented: “Allied Glazing is extremely proud to be the first
installer to work with the new PURe window system and we
hope that the staff and pupils of Carlyle Infant School are as
pleased with the finished results as we are. With any new
product there is always going to be some uncertainty about
how easy it will be to work with and how well it will perform,
but we are extremely impressed with the PURe window
system, particularly as it combines ease of fabrication with a
technically advanced construction and exceptional thermal
performance. We liaised closely with Senior’s technical team
throughout the contract, developing a much stronger
working relationship in the process, and we are looking
forward to working with the new PURe system on future
contracts.”
Providing a modern and inspirational
learning environment for some 180
pupils, the new Carlyle Infant School
in Derby is one of six to be rebuilt
as part of the Education Funding
Agency’s (EFA) Priority Schools

Carl Broadhurst
Allied Glazing
in the UK to benefit from an enhanced thermal barrier
manufactured from expanded polyurethane foam (PUR).
Traditionally used in cladding and insulation products,
the use of PUR as a thermal barrier in windows gives the
PURe system the potential to achieve U-values as low as
0.71W/m2k when calculated as a commercial CEN standard
window.
As well as helping to cut the operational carbon emissions
by making the building easier and more cost-effective to
heat, the unique construction of the PURe system can also
contribute to reducing the calculations of embodied
carbon which looks at the energy used in the manufacture,
transportation, assembly and deconstruction of construction
materials. Not only is the PURe system manufactured from
aluminium, which offers cradle-to-cradle recycling, but the
PUR thermal barrier can also be re-used as fillers for other
products with no requirement for landfill.
With a generic Green Guide rating of A for use in commercial
projects and a life expectancy in excess of 40 years, Senior’s
most recent product development has also been designed
to meet the PassivHaus standard cycle and exceed the
current requirements of Part L of the Building Regulations.

Senior’s thermally-efficient SCW+ curtain wall, SPW600/E windows
and SD commercial doors have been installed at St.Paul’s Catholic
School, Babington Community College and City of Leicester College.
Work has also been completed at Ellesmere College, which is the
only special school in the country to have been totally rebuilt at part
of the BSF programme. The consistency of working with Acorn
Aluminium across all four of the contracts, and utilising the same
suite of Senior products for each, has brought numerous benefits in
terms of speed and quality of installation, reduced costs and greater
management of future maintenance requirements. Although the four
schools differ greatly in terms of their location, size and facilities,
the flexibility of Senior’s systems has helped Acorn to successfully
meet the individual requirements of each project, ensuring that
the architect’s aesthetic vision was fully realised.

Senior Architectural Systems
has launched a new aluminium
window system that offers
enhanced aesthetics, improved
thermal performance and
flexible solutions for a variety
of site installations. The new
Aluminium Series 2 casement
window has been developed
to provide exceptional design flexibility. Featuring attractive, slim sightlines
due to the in-line vent arrangement, the new system can accommodate
a variety of glazing widths from 28 to 44mm, depending on weight.
Designed to combine aesthetics with performance, the new Aluminium
Series 2 system boasts impressive thermal credentials and has the potential
to achieve U-values as low as 0.95W/m2K when calculated as a CEN standard
commercial window. Suited to a variety of applications, the construction
of Senior’s new Aluminium Series 2 system allows it to be supplied and
installed unglazed for the glazing to be completed internally on site,
unlike many alternative in-line vent systems. As the internal beads can also
be fitted later on in the construction programme, and glass deliveries can
go directly to site, the risks associated with site damage, double handling
and delivery weights are significantly reduced. Long-term maintenance
programmes can also benefit from the use of the new system as the units
can be easily replaced without the need to remove the vents. Similarly,
if the internal beads become damaged or need replacing in the future,
they can be accessed without the need to remove the window.
The Aluminium Series 2 windows have also been designed to complement
Senior’s Hybrid Series 2 timber composite windows, which feature
aluminium externally and engineered timber internally.

Slim sight lines in view
For projects that desire a sleek, uniform
appearance and demand exceptional
energy efficiency, the new SF52 curtain

Systems can provide a good combination
of aesthetics and thermal performance.
Interest in Senior’s thermally enhanced
SF52 system has continued to soar
following the product’s official launch in
2015, with SF52 now firmly established as
Senior’s most popular curtain wall
solution. Key to the system’s successful
reception is its slim 52mm sight lines
which help achieve an attractive, uniform
appearance. Available as a mullion
drained system which removes the need
for visible drainage slots, the new SF52
system can also be specified as capped,

two for even greater design flexibility.
curtain wall has been specified to create the large retail displays
of the shopping centre’s numerous new outlets. Maximising the
flexibility of SF52, fabricator Dortech, has created the shop
frontages by installing both capped and capless systems.
The slim, 52mm sightlines of the SF52 system helped to
achieve an attractive, uniform appearance at the development which has been sympathetically designed
to complement and reflect the style of Beverley’s historic town centre. Designed by architect Harris
Partnership, street frontages have been broken down, with each bay boasting double-height glazed
façades created by Senior’s SF52 curtain walling.
DP265
PURe range extended with low-value doors
Following on from the success of its thermally advanced PURe
window system, Senior Architectural Systems is once again
set to break the mould with the launch of its new PURe door
range. Available as folding sliding, in-line sliding, lift and slide,
single and double options, the new patent-pending PURe range
features the pioneering use of an enhanced thermal barrier
manufactured from expanded polyurethane foam (PUR).
When calculated as a CEN standard door, the new PURe
system can achieve U-values as low as 0.93W/m2k.
By offering significantly lower U-values than other aluminium
doors currently available, PURe doors can make a substantial
improvement to the overall carbon footprint of a building
which, in turn, can lead to a reduction in energy bills.

combatting cross contamination
The importance of infrared washroom technology in the commercial sector environment cannot be
underestimated. Not only can it drastically reduce the risk of cross contamination, aiding infection
control, but it can also help to eliminate wastage, leading to significant cost reductions. Having
recently extended its infrared portfolio for commercial customers, Chris Tranter at Bristan advises
on the importance of non-touch technology...
Control of cross-contamination in commercial and public
sector buildings is of utmost importance to maintain the
health and wellbeing of occupants.
“
Here, the biggest risk lies in the washroom. Due to their
function and being a communal area which
is in constant use, washrooms provide
a breeding ground for germs and
bacteria which can then be
transferred from one surface
to another.
...It is important that all
specifiers take advantage
of the latest infrared
solutions which can help
to significantly reduce
infection...
Chris Tranter
This can lead to illnesses,
some being serious, including
salmonella, flu, diarrhoea and impetigo. Notably, in 2006,
poor hand hygiene was attributed to the spread of MRSA
(methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus) in UK hospitals.
As such, recent years have seen high-risk environments,
such as hospitals and schools, come under increased pressure
to optimise their infection control regimes and alleviate the
risk of cross-contamination.
However, this risk isn’t just limited to the public domain.
When it comes to the office environment, for example, it is
estimated that workers are likely to spend an incredible 41
hours in the company washroom each year, the equivalent
of more than one whole week at work. Yet one in four

admits to not
washing their
hands every
time they visit
the washroom,
putting the
hygiene of their
colleagues at
risk.
And so, clearly
all commercial
settings have a
duty of care to
alleviate this risk
by providing a
clean and
hygienic washroom
supported with
rigorous infectioncontrol measures.
Fundamentally,
it is important to instil behavioural change by encouraging
everyone, both building occupants and visitors, to wash their
hands regularly with soap and warm water. Good practice also
constitutes routine sterilisation with a focus on cleaning and
disinfecting germ-prone surfaces and objects such as
countertops, urinals, toilets, door knobs, toilet handles
and faucets.
However, even with these measures in place, there is still
room for bacteria to spread. This can be avoided by the
installation of solutions that offer completely hands-free
operation whereby automatic detection eliminates the risk
of germs being spread via the hands.
One example is the latest generation of infrared taps.
These types of taps use infrared technology to detect
human presence and switch on the water flow, delivering the
right amount of water when required. In this way, the nontouch mechanism alleviates the risk of germs spreading,
making it suitable for use in all premises seeking to optimise
hygiene levels – all while eliminating water waste too.
Another solid recommendation is a urinal infra-red automatic
flush. Working in a similar way, the infra-red technology
detects human contact and automatically flushes the
individual urinal after use, again inhibiting the spread
of germs. Plus, the direct flush removes the need for an
auto-flush cistern and associated plumbing used in
traditional installations, which flush all urinals intermittently.
There is a major added bonus to using both of these
technologies – efficiency. Whereby with traditional setups,
taps may be left running – or simply drip, while cisterns may
have an unnecessarily high water demand, non-touch
technology means water is only used as needed. This enables
commercial providers to significantly minimise mains water
use in order to lower their environmental impact and cut
water bills.
However, the considerations don’t quite end there.
Recently a new infrared soap dispenser specifically created
to aid infection control in public sector premises has been
introduced. In a similar vein to water-related infrared
products, the dispenser spout incorporates infrared
technology to detect human presence and dispense
a user-set volume of soap, thus negating the risk of crosscontamination between hands. In addition, wastage is
eliminated, thus further helping with efficiency measures.
The risk presented by infection spread in the washroom is a
serious one. We need only look at the stack of prior headlines
around infection rates caused by poor hand hygiene in the
healthcare sector, to see the tangible health issues presented.
As such, it is important that all specifiers and contractors take
a considered approach to washroom specification and take
advantage of the latest infrared solutions which can help to
significantly reduce infection – all while saving water.

with ceramic, stone and porcelain tiles with no risk of show through. Setting in as
little as two hours, the cement-based adhesive can be used to fix tiles to a range
of materials including wood, concrete and plaster. Suitable for internal and
external use, the new adhesive is S1 rated, meaning it offers enhanced flexibility
and making it suitable for use with underfloor heating and other applications
where there may be some movement and vibration. Commenting on the launch,
Katharine Egerton, product manager at EVO-STIK said: “We’re seeing a growing
DP281 market trend for the use of porous tiles such as porcelain and natural stone. Porous tiles
tend to suffer from show through and, as a result, using a grey adhesive can cause tiles to
look murky or dirty. This issue is made worse if the tile is light coloured. In addition, when using
a light coloured tile, a customer will nearly always opt for a similar coloured grout. By using a white
adhesive there’s no risk of ruining the colour of the grout or the tiled area in general.”
Methven unveils next Aurajet phase
DP283
Methven has unveiled the next phase of its patented Aurajet technology
shower range with the release of two new Aio products. The 220mm Aio
Overhead Shower, which is almost 70% larger than the standard handset,
brings the superior spray and halo design into ultra-wide coverage for
all-over warmth and maximum body contact. The large Overhead Shower
is designed for mains or high-pressures and is available in all-over chrome
or chrome and white options. The other new addition is the dual-head
Aio Shower System, which comprises the fully-immersive Aio Overhead
Shower and the Aio Shower Handset, for a more directed and
concentrated spray. The system comes with an integrated diverter to
allow for easy switching between the two outlets. The range takes the
science of showering to new levels, using water deflection to offer an
unparalleled showering experience.

is the first colour option in the Dekton range
of ultra-compact surfaces to incorporate
recycled materials. A mix of volcanic shades
with intense grey, brown and black tones with
light-dark contrasts offering extreme realism,
Trilium features a soft metallic matt finish.
The surface is unexpectedly smooth to the
touch, yet edgy enough to cater for projects
with an industrial aesthetic. Part of the Tech
Collection, Dekton Trilium builds on
Cosentino’s long-standing commitment to
sustainability. This new addition incorporates
recycled materials from the Dekton
production process, maintaining the key
features of the material but also representing
important eco-friendly values.

insulation that achieves
the best of all worlds
External wall insulation plays a key part, not just in improving thermal efficiency and alleviating
issues with fuel poverty, but also in enhancing the attractiveness of existing housing stock and
regenerating communities. Darren Snaith, director of refurbishment and regeneration at
ROCKWOOL, explains how to transform buildings and communities for the better...

Darren Snaith
ROCKWOOL
According to Government figures, some 625,000 homes
per year need to be brought to near-zero carbon emissions
by 2050 to comply with targets in the Climate Change Act;
for example, achieving EPC ratings of at least band B for
all dwellings by this date. At the same time, official figures
suggest there are currently just over 2.3 million households
living in fuel poverty in England, approximately 10% of the
UK’s population. A large majority of these households are
social housing which is in dire need of renovation to
deliver improved thermal and aesthetic performance.
Actions being taken to resolve these issues by social
housing providers typically involve External Wall Insulation
(EWI). With stone wool external wall insulation, blocks of
insulation are mechanically fixed onto the external fabric
of a building and then rendered to provide a cost-effective
solution in a range of different applications.
Stone wool EWI
This type of EWI is proven to achieve high levels of thermal
insulation, eliminating cold bridging issues and easily
achieves a minimum refurbishment U-value target of
0.3W/m2K.
It is also non-combustible, both in bulk storage
and when installed. This non-combustibility is often an
important consideration, given that social housing tenants
often remain in occupation as EWI is applied on projects.
An additional benefit is that this type of stone wool
system still allows buildings to breathe, preventing surface
and interstitial condensation, by keeping the temperature
throughout the cross-section of the wall structure above
dew point.
Versatile aesthetics
EWI systems are also known and installed for their versatility.

constructions and are typically available in a wide range
of different coloured renders and finishes, including brick
and dash. This versatility enables architects to meet often
challenging Local Planning Requirements.
On a recent project with One Vision Housing at the Hornby
Flats Estate in Litherland, ROCKWOOL worked with architect
HLP to develop such a solution. The development comprises
eight, three-storey buildings in a garden setting, where the
original design and construction had caused substantial
issues with cold bridging. HLP’s design solution was based
on over-cladding the flats with EWI that combined thermally
robust detailing with contemporary classical architecture.
HLP worked closely with One Vision Housing to meet its
demand that real brickwork would be visible as part of the
external wall insulation, especially since the surrounding
streets are traditional brick Victorian terraces.
ROCKWOOL’s BrickShield system offered the solution,
in combination with the REDArt Silicone render system.
The result is a thermally efficient scheme where the elevations
retain their balance and proportion but, in doing so, create a
sense of grandeur more befitting their garden setting.
Social benefits
Perhaps just as important as these benefits are the significant
social advantages that EWI can bring.
In 2015 LSE Housing and Communities produced High Rise
Hope Revisited, a report examining the social implications of
whole building energy efficiency refurbishments, including
EWI, in residential tower blocks. Based on research conducted
at the Edward Woods estate in Shepherds Bush, London,
the report found that upgrading work carried out across 754
flats in three 23-storey tower blocks had enhanced the quality
of life and living conditions for residents, with aesthetic
improvements instilling a sense of pride within the
community.
High Rise Hope Revisited shows that while this type
of refurbishment scheme can help alleviate fuel poverty,
the transformation of the visual appearance of Edward Woods
on both an estate and wider neighbourhood scale had
improved the sense of
well-being of residents,
making the area a more
attractive environment
to live.
The installation
of EWI as part of wider
regeneration schemes
can not only help
extend the life of
existing buildings
for the future but also
ensure long-established
communities are able
to enjoy improved
conditions in a
secure, well maintained
place to live.

The natural choice for beautiful buildings
When it comes to quality, sustainability and beauty, prefabricated
roofing materials do not quite measure up to the high standards
of purely sourced slate. This natural beauty can be found in
various shades of black and grey and can be crafted into multiple
shapes and sizes. CUPA PIZARRAS, the family-owned producer
of natural slate, has a vast slate product range, which includes its
most popular product in England and Wales – CUPA 12. CUPA 12 is
a dark grey slate with thin laminations and a smooth matt surface.
Available in six sizes, it has exceptional consistency of thickness
and surface appearance; it is split to an average thickness of 5 and 6mm. In addition, the slates
conform to the requirements of BS EN 12326-1 and are certified for resistance to freeze/thaw.
Slate’s lack of standardisation is precisely what defines its uniqueness and makes it so versatile –
it can be adapted to any type of project whether that be contemporary or period architecture.

DP294
Prater has delivered a complete green roof
package for the £237m Alder Hey Children’s
NHS Foundation Trust in Liverpool. Laing O’Rourke
appointed Prater in 2014 on the strength of its
technical expertise and previous experience on
major healthcare projects as well as green roof
systems. Designed by BDP in consultation with
patients, their families, the Princes Foundation and National Arts for Health, the 270-bed hospital is
the UK’s first NHS health park for children. It was a drawing by a 14-year-old patient that inspired the
project’s final design. The building is designed with spacious rooms and wards while offering views
of the landscaped grounds from every room. The Prater in-house design team worked closely with
Laing O’Rourke to make the architects plans a working reality. The project includes a 52,600m2
main hospital and a 9,500m2 outpatient’s department.
No compromise on quality

A new apartment building in London has shown that even on tight plots,
there is no need to compromise on quality to meet the ongoing housing
shortage by combining the excellent fabric performance and fast-track
construction offered by the Kingspan TEK Building System with stylish
architectural design. In order to deliver a high level of thermal performance,
the Kingspan TEK Building System of structural insulated panels (SIPs) was
erected by Kingspan Delivery Partner, Lowfield Timber Frames, forming the
roof and walls of the building. The 142mm thick panels feature a highly
insulated core sandwiched between two layers of OSB/3. Lowfield Timber
Frames designed and cut the panels to the precise requirements of the
project. This not only ensured site waste was kept to a minimum, but also
allowed the system to be fully erected in just seven weeks, with a predictable
construction programme.

Pro-tecting building for better care
DP297
A model for patient care will be delivered in Ayrshire with the
redesign and extension of front door facilities at University
Hospitals Ayr and Crosshouse. This approach extends to the
roofs, to create a fit-for-purpose physical environment through
which the Building for Better Care (BfBC) programme
will be achieved for NHS Ayrshire & Arran. Roofing contractor
WF Price (Roofing) for the programme’s principal supply chain
partner, BAM Construction, has used some 1,400m2 of Protan
SE1.2mm substrate for the mechanically-fixed single ply flat
roofing elements of the two sites. Approximately 600m2 was used at University Hospital Crosshouse,
on the formation of the new Combined Assessment Unit; a further 850m2 was utilised at University
Hospital Ayr to reconfigure and extend the existing A&E & Combined Assessment Unit. Crosshouse
was opened in February 2016 and Ayr will open in March 2017.
Woodberry Down renewed
DP298
Premium performance products from Kingspan Insulation
have been used to insulate new high and low-rise buildings
as part of London’s largest and most ambitious regeneration
programmes. Woodberry Down was once heralded as the
estate of the future but, in recent years, had suffered from
an increasing number of issues including subsidence and
poor insulation. An eight-phase regeneration plan will
replace outdated concrete tower blocks with more than
5,500 new homes over the next 20 years. Architect,
Hawkins\ Brown, specified Kingspan Kooltherm K12 Framing Board and K15 Rainscreen Board for Kick
Start Sites 2 and 5. Kingspan Kooltherm K15 Rainscreen Board was installed as part of the anodized
rainscreen cladding used on the top storeys of many of the blocks. These sections extend beyond
18m and it was, therefore, essential that the product offered excellent fire performance.

A hybrid solution
DP300
Close to 1,000m2 of Tektalan boards, manufactured by Heraklith and
supplied by Marmox UK, have been used for the conversion of former
American Express premises into a major new media centre for the
University of Brighton. Two different thicknesses of Tektalan were
specified to improve the thermal and acoustic performance,
as well as the appearance of several soffit areas within the buildings.
These included the underside of two structural concrete floors and
an entrance canopy. Within these spaces the Tektalan boards help cut
reverberation and present a smart, textured surface. Tektalan represents a hybrid combination of
Marmox Heraklith Woodwool boards with rock mineral wool, which enhances the product’s already
impressive performance characteristics. The woodwool element provides strength and rigidity
together with its unique appearance and sound absorption. The layer of rock mineral wool offers
additional thermal and acoustic insulation while also being considered inherently non-combustible.
Manchester framing solution
DP301
Light gauge structural steel specialist, voestalpine
Metsec, has supported the development of the
Cambridge Street regeneration project in Manchester,
providing SFS infill walling for the construction of
29 and 21 storey new build apartment buildings,
comprising a total of 282 one, two and three bedroom
residences. One additional requirement on the project
was working around the use of heavier brick finish
cladding, Corium, which was used by the architect to
ensure that the construction maintained characteristics
synonymous with the geographical area. Using its in-house design expertise, Metsec was able to
ensure the steel framing solution was as efficient as possible when supporting the heavier cladding
which enabled a reduction in the cost of cladding brackets.
Achieving a top class finish
NVELOPE’s NV3 cladding support system
has been specified for the new Paramount tenstorey mixed use development in Liverpool.
The development comprises student
accommodation, a spa and gym, as well as
commercial space. The accommodation offers
488 units, with a variety of en-suite student
bedrooms and studio study rooms complete
with a kitchen. Manufactured from aluminium
alloys, NVELOPE’s NV3 system is suited to
concealed fix or mechanically fixed vertical
cladding applications. The system is secured
using hangers and undercut stud anchors
or screws to provide a concealed fixing.
Horizontal NVELOPE channel profiles are fixed
to the vertical profiles. Rainscreen panels are
secured on to these horizontal profiles using
hangers and adjustable hangers.

REPAIRS, REFURBISHMENT AND WATER INGRESS BY THE SEA
Stuart Hicks, from cold liquid-applied waterproofing specialist,
Kemper System, discusses how a change of membrane addressed failing
waterproofing at a luxury residential development in Saltdean, near Brighton.
assumption was made that the issue lay with
the quality of installation rather than the
suitability of the membrane.
A new roofing contractor, Cawston Roofing,
was brought in to carry out repairs to the
membrane but, as the existing roof build up
was still under warranty, Cawston Roofing
was required to carry out repairs using the
same product.
The majority of the problems with the
roofing material were around the upstands.
While repairs using the same membrane
seemed to address the issue briefly, the same
issues recurred following the repairs.
The Grand Ocean Hotel in Saltdean, near
Brighton, epitomises a bygone era of
glamourous seaside elegance. First opened in
1938, the Grade II listed building’s crescentshaped white façade makes it a classic of Art
Deco architectural design.
Once a popular honeymoon destination
owned by Billy Butlin it is now the central
building from which a development of luxury
apartments takes its name. The scheme has
seen the refurbishment of the original structure
and construction of four new build blocks
designed in keeping with the former hotel.
Problems with the integrity of the
waterproofing system that was originally
specified for the project became apparent
even before the scheme was completed,
leading to a change of both roofing contractor
and, eventually, roofing system.
Integrity Issues
Both the existing hotel building and the new
builds have flat roofs and architect, Rolfe Judd,
had specified a liquid waterproofing
membrane. Unfortunately, the system
selected was not robust enough to adhere
seamlessly to the roof substrate and the
Inverted Refurbishment
Having used Kemper Systems’ Kemperol
membranes on a wide variety of construction
projects in the past, Cawston Roofing was
confident in recommending Kemperol V210, a
cold liquid-applied waterproofing membrane.
The originally-specified membrane had
been installed beneath the insulation as an
inverted roof build up for the new apartment
blocks. Cawston Roofing removed the paving
slabs and green roof medium along with the
insulation and, where possible, this was stored
for re-use.
The company then prepared and cleaned
the roof surface and, in the areas around the
upstands where the failed membrane had not
bonded, the team pulled off the damaged
membrane.
The existing insulation, slabs and green
roof medium were then reinstated to
complete the roof.
Hotel Roof
The damage caused by the failed
waterproofing membrane on the roof and
balconies of the former hotel building was
even more significant because the original
roof build-up was not inverted.
The balconies were tackled first, with strip
out of the entire roof build-up. Here, not only
had the originally-specified membrane failed,
but the insulation below it had begun to rot too.
Having completed the strip out, Cawston
Roofing allowed the concrete substrate to dry
on each balcony and the decision was taken to
reinstate the build-up for each balcony as an
inverted warm roof.
New insulation had to be cut to size and
shape and this was done while the Kemperol
V210 membrane was being installed so that
the balconies could be completed as quickly
as possible.
The team then moved onto the 8,500m2
former hotel roof, which comprises five
‘fingers’ with a central core. Water ingress
around the roof outlets meant that the
recently installed warm roof insulation was
already sodden and the roof had to be
stripped back to the vapour barrier.
To aid water run-off in the future, Kemper
System designed a tapered Kempertherm
insulation scheme, introducing a slight pitch to
each section of roof. Cawston Roofing
pre-primed each piece of board in an on-site
workshop during the winter months to aid
faster installation once the weather improved.
When weather conditions did improve, the
Kempertherm sections were fixed to the
substrate and joint sealed before application
of the Kemperol V210 membrane began.
Holiday Heritage
Thanks to the replacement of the originallyspecified waterproofing system with
Kemperol V210, the building not only provides
a stylish address on the coast that is warm
and dry for residents but also protects a slice
of the UK’s holidaymaking heritage and an
iconic listed building.

A recent project to provide 250m2 of roofing for a kiosk,
covered walkways and stores for the £1.5m extension to
Bournemouth Oceanarium was a new departure for IKO
Polymeric and Excel Roofing Services – at least in terms of the
end users. The centrepiece of the extension is the new Penguin
Beach Encounter, a two-storey building housing the latest
Oceanarium residents – ten Humboldt Penguins. “The new roof
had to look good from all angles as it’s on the beachfront and
visible from the Promenade above,” explained Andy Coles, IKO Polymeric’s senior field engineer.
“Our Armourplan PVC single ply membrane comes in a selection of colours so it was the obvious
choice for the project. Slate Grey and Mid Grey were chosen to complement the existing GRP edge
trims, curved metal drips and upstands to the edge of the warm roof section. The warm roof covers
the kiosk and walkways and the cold roof covers the stores area.”
Extra care – throughout
DP304
Swindon Borough Council ’s Newburgh House
development of 43 no extra care flats and a
further 10 no extra care bungalows, was originally
built in the 1960s and needed re-roofing. The best
value solution has been to use 1.5mm thick
fleece-backed Protan EX-A adhered system,
installed directly onto the existing concrete deck
by contractor Williams Roofing. “It delivered on all
fronts,” explained Williams Roofing’s Simon Cross. “The council wanted an adhered system in place
of the original felt, to improve longevity and minimise the noise and disruption that residents would be
subjected to if a mechanically-fixed option had been employed. The fleece backing that is an integral
part of Protan’s EX-A system helped supplement the insulation, which we increased anyway, to help
improve the thermal performance that the building achieved whenit was initially built.”

PIR manufacturer, Recticel Insulation,
is launching its new feel good inside
philosophy and debuting a self-supporting
room-in-a-roof system for pitched roofs at
this year's Vision built environment exhibition
(stand 45, June 7-8, Olympia). The nextgeneration product, L-Ments, comprises
roofing underlay, counter battens and integral
structural timber in one PIR insulation panel
as a single, lightweight, cost-effective modular
roofing element, making it exceptionally quick
and easy to install. The new system enables

neaco provides bespoke walnut-effect handrails
Oak is the standard specification for Timberline, neaco’s wood-effect
aluminium handrails. However, one project went against the grain with
a bespoke walnut-effect finish at a new health and social care centre
in Market Weighton. neaco’s advanced powder coating facilities can
replicate the intricate detail and rich texture of wood grain with an
extremely durable finish which combines superbly with the company’s
metallic-finish balustrade, either in aluminium or stainless steel.
The powder coated handrail is warm and comfortable to the touch
and non-absorptive – unlike genuine timber handrails, which require
ongoing treatment to maintain their aesthetic, prevent absorption of bacteria and control infection.
neaco’s aluminium balustrade is available in a range of solid and metallic colours. The company also
manufactures structural glass, balconies, decking, cladding, solar shading and adaptive bathing
products.
Glass adapter earns approval
DP307
Q-railing’s focus on quality and safety pays off every time.
The AbZ approval for its Easy Glass MOD 0749 makes it one
of only a few glass adapter systems in the world that are approved
for creating a structural glass balustrade. AbZ (Allgemeine
bauaufsichtliche Zulassung) – meaning general building
inspectorate approvals – enables the creation of an approved glass
balustrade featuring these glass adapters which hold glass panels
up to 1,500mm high and 2,500mm wide. A special feature of the
Easy Glass MOD 0749 glass adapter is its built-in adjustability;
this makes it easy to straighten the glass panels on site. It also
offers a choice of fixing methods – the base can accommodate
a mechanical anchor to be used for concrete walls, or a bolt for
connection to a metal stringer.

the new Lift Directive –
what you need to know
The new Lift Directive 2014/33/EU (95/16/EC recast) came into force on 20 April 2016. With a delay
now announced to UK regulations to implement the directive, what should specifiers and installers do
next, and what are the main changes to be aware of? Nick Mellor, director of the Lift & Escalator
Industry Association (LEIA) and LIFTEX 2016 explains…
Lift Regulations delayed
Publication of the new Lifts Regulations, required to transpose
the recast Lifts Directive 2014/33/EU into UK law, was
expected by 19 April. However, the UK regulations will now
be delayed until after the UK Referendum on EU membership.
We are advising that lift installers or manufacturers of
products (lifts or safety components) should proceed from
20 April as though Directive 2014/33/EU was implemented in
UK law from that point. We believe that the Notified Bodies
will support this approach. So, from 20 April, Declarations of
Conformity should reference 2014/33/EU.
Since the Lifts Regulations 1997 will not be repealed until
publication of new Lifts Regulations, there is an alternative
for companies whose products are sold solely within the UK
of continuing under the current regulations.
What does the Directive mean for clients and building
designers?
Under current BIS (the Government department for Business,
Innovation and Skills) guidance, new lifts not meeting the
minimum refuge space requirements in the harmonised
standards need an approval, or derogation,
from BIS.
From 31 August 2017,
these minimum refuge space
requirements will be defined by
the new harmonised standard
We are advising that lift installers BS EN 81-20. This introduces
or manufacturers of products
some changes in minimum
refuge spaces which are likely
should proceed from 20 April

to have implications for the lift pit and headroom dimensions
for new lifts in new buildings as follows:
• These dimensions, especially for the headroom,
could increase significantly on smaller lifts (typically
smaller than 450kg/6 person size).
• So-called low headroom designs, whose headroom
dimensions are less than required for conformity with the
harmonised standard, would require derogation from BIS.
Owing to the significant lead times for building design and
construction, building designers are urged to discuss their
required lift well dimensions for lifts to be placed into service
after the end of August 2017 with their lift provider.

Our guidance is:
For new lifts in new buildings, the simplest solution is for the
building design to include sufficient pit depth and headroom
clearances to meet the minimum refuge spaces requirements
in BS EN 81-20. This avoids the need for derogation from BIS,
who can grant only prior approval.
For new lifts in existing buildings which fully comply with
the standard BS EN 81-21, then there would be no further
need for derogation from BIS.
What does the Directive mean for manufacturers
and installers?
In the Lift Directive, “manufacturer” means the manufacturer
of a safety component for lifts, and “installer” means the
company taking responsibility for the lift. There are
also obligations for importers and distributers of safety
components and these are similar to the manufacturers'.
The main implications are:
The installer of lifts, and manufacturer/importer/distributor
of safety components for lifts, must have traceability on who
they have bought safety components from and who they
have sold them to/which lifts they are installed on.
The installer of lifts, and manufacturer/importer/distributor
of safety components for lifts, if they detect non-conformities,
must take corrective action to bring the lift or safety
component into conformity (or withdraw/recall a safety
component) and, where the lift or safety component presents
a risk, to report it to the national authorities together with
the corrective actions taken.
Note: It is for the manufacturer or installer to determine
if there is a non-conformity. They can use risk assessment to
determine the corrective actions required. Nonconformities
are relative to the Lift Directive and not to harmonised
standards.
The list of safety components in Annex III now includes
devices to prevent unintended car movement (UCMP)
so these will now need to be CE marked.
Certificates and notified bodies decisions under the current
directive (95/16/EC) remain valid (see 2014/33/EU, article 44).
So certificates issued up to 19 April will be valid until their
date of expiry.
These issues will be addressed in the free seminar
programme at the forthcoming LIFTEX 2016 event which
takes place from 25-26 May 2016 at London’s ExCeL.
Over 100 exhibitors will display the latest in lift, escalator
and moving walkway products and technology.

Pipe insulation is a work of art
DP317
Kingspan Kooltherm FM Pipe Insulation has been installed in
an exposed-to-view application at an iconic arts college, providing
considerable time savings and subtle, high quality aesthetics courtesy
of its theatre black vapour barrier jacket. Building services have been
left exposed within the interior spaces, reflecting the building’s
industrial, brutalist design and allowing ceiling heights to be raised
within the existing rooms. To complement the internal pallet of whites
and blacks, while also delivering excellent energy performance, M&E
contractor EIC specified Kingspan Kooltherm FM Pipe Insulation with a
matte, theatre black aluminium foil facing. With an aged thermal
conductivity as low as 0.025W/m·K, Kingspan Kooltherm FM Pipe
Insulation is the most thermally efficient, commonly used pipe
insulation and was installed on all service pipework within the building.

Effective stormwater
management
JDP has supplied large diameter HDPE
pipes for a stormwater attenuation tank
to provide effective water management
and protect a new housing development
in Wheal Harmony, Redruth. Kier Group
required an effective drainage solution
to protect Sanctuary Housing’s new
development of 65 affordable dwellings.
JDP’s water management team supplied
an attenuation tank of 59.5m in length
comprising 1,500mm HDPE pipe from
its depot in Launceston. Large Diameter
HDPE Pipes are a tried-and-tested method
for carrying stormwater underground.
Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems
(SuDS) however, are much more than a
single product. The objective is to design
a system to deal with the flow at source,
rather than transferring the problem
further down the watercourse.
Bridging the gap
Global plumbing and heating manufacturer,
Pegler Yorkshire, has added to its long line
of awards as it received recognition for being
one of only two companies in the world to have
held the BSI Kitemark for over 70 years, in
addition to being the first UK business to
receive the much coveted recognition. Pegler
Yorkshire was awarded the Kitemark in 1945
for its copper pipe fittings and, since then,
has continued to produce products of
exceptional quality, produce pioneering new
technologies and products in the plumbing
and heating sector. The Kitemark is awarded
by BSI (British Standards Institution) and was
established in 1903.
DP319
Designing and installing attenuation tanks has proved problematic
for the construction market for a number of years. All types
of attenuation system have their merits but they all have their
drawbacks too. Stormwater Elevator bridges the gap between
these systems and overcomes the issues related to access and
maintenance, structural integrity and life expectancy. As a
permanent plastic former system it is used to create an in-situ
cast concrete attenuation and stormwater storage tank without
the need for heavy lifting equipment. Its patented design offers
engineers and contractors an alternative and cost-effective way
of achieving a strong concrete void up to 2.5m deep and to any plan size. Stormwater Elevator is
manufactured from a lightweight, recyclable plastic making it easy to handle and quick to install,
therfore avoiding the need for on-site heavy lifting equipment and helping to improve site safety.

New guide covers entire range
For companies that are famous for offering a broad range of products
backed by technical expertise, bespoke solutions and sector
knowledge, it can often be a daunting task to create one central
document that provides detail while being easy to use. However,
that is exactly what Polypipe has aimed to capture, with the launch
of its new Civils and Infrastructure Product Guide. Designed to
provide quick, easy access to every product and service available
from Polypipe Civils, the guide offers a simple overview for each of
the company’s offerings along with a more in-depth analysis of each
product’s applications and functions. While the popular cable
protection, Ridgidrain and Ridgistorm-XL piping and geocellular
Permavoid and Polystorm ranges will be familiar to many designers,
engineers and ground workers, it is perhaps the Fabrications section
that will be of most interest to those already familiar with Polypipe.

drainage, plumbing & water saving solutions
five things to look out for
when specifying aluminium coping
Coping systems are an intrinsic part of wall and edge protection and often provide specifiers with an
opportunity to apply a final aesthetic frame to a building. Choosing the right system is an important
decision and here, Kevin Wallis, category manager – eaves solutions at Marley Alutec explains how
architects and specifiers can get the balance right between aesthetics and durability...
From a material perspective, it goes without saying
that aluminium can offer the durability and decorative
attributes suitable for coping systems, however, merely citing
aluminium on a specification may not ensure the service life
intended. Here are five key factors to consider that will help
architects and specifiers make a fully informed decision:
1. The most important attribute of a coping system is its
ability to remain weathertight. You could argue that a coping
system that is not weathertight throughout its full life
expectancy may not be fit for purpose, so it has to be the first
line of inquisition. The integrity of a system will largely come
down to the type of seal used at the joints.
Some coping systems use a rubber EPDM seal to make them
weathertight. EPDM rubber seals rely on compression to
maintain a weathertight seal; once the EPDM rubber’s
compressible memory is lost, the system may no longer
be weathertight, resulting in water ingress.
The best type of seal is a butyl adhesive seal, which will
long outlast the EPDM alternative. The combination
of compression and adhesion means
that the system will remain 100%
weathertight throughout its life.
“
Merely citing aluminium
on a specification may not
ensure the service life
intended...
Kevin Wallis
Marley Alutec
2. Wind rating is another
important consideration,
particularly for installations
at height. Nothing could be
worse than having a coping
system come loose and being blown away in the wind,
posing significant risk to public health and damage to
property. To be safe, specify a system that has been tested by
a certified test centre to withstand winds above the highest
speeds recorded in that area – which in the UK is 173mph.
DP325
3. It is worth considering ease of installation; this will
directly affect the overall cost of a project and how closely
the finished installation meets the original design intent.
Composite aluminium is a good choice as it is extremely
lightweight and rigid, meaning it is easier and safer to handle
on site – particularly when working at height. What’s more,
some of these systems can be easily modified on site using
standard carpentry tools.
Coping plays a crucial role in building envelope protection
but unfortunately doesn’t always place highly on the
design agenda.
4. The next thing to consider is durability. Coping by default
is almost always located in an awkward to access position.
It is therefore important that it stands the test of time well,
so that it doesn’t have to be replaced frequently and
maintenance requirements are kept to a minimum.
Therefore, look for long life expectancies – the best last for
50 years or more. It is also worth looking for manufacturers
that offer colour-stable, architectural grade paint finishes and
even Nano self-cleaning technology to keep maintenance
costs to a minimum.
5. Finally, aesthetics must come in to play. For most projects,
coping systems should provide a clean, crisp edge to frame
the building. Aluminium provides a smooth finish, however,
some sheet aluminium systems can suffer from bowing
(particularly on walls with a wide girth). Rigidity is
therefore important to achieve a consistent uniform finish;
ask manufacturers about maximum widths and get handson with the product if possible to test its flex.

heating, ventilation & energy efficiency
pumping up the savings
As the building services industry responds to the growing pressure to reduce energy consumption and
cut carbon emissions from UK building stock, Mike Hefford, head of low carbon technologies at
Remeha Commercial, looks at the carbon and energy saving benefits of gas absorption heat pumps...
If we are to meet the Government’s target of 80% carbon
emission reduction by 2050, we need to improve the
performance of our energy-guzzling buildings. With space
and water heating accounting for as much as 60% of the
total energy use within buildings and 40% of the carbon
emissions, low carbon technologies are increasingly
specified for reduced energy use and a lower carbon
footprint. Amongst the range of options, gas absorption
heat pumps (GAHPs) are growing in popularity as a high
efficiency, low-carbon, low-NOx solution that can significantly
improve the environmental ratings of a building and reduce
operating costs.
GAHPs operate by capturing energy from the surrounding air,
which converts to higher temperatures with the aid of an
ammonia/water refrigeration cycle. GAHPs then combine this
renewable energy with the gas condensing heat generator to
maintain high operational efficiencies. In this way, they can
increase the thermal output to offer exceptionally high,
achievable seasonal efficiencies of between 120 and 130%
The high performance of GAHPs means that they deliver
reliable operation even at low outside temperatures and
continuous heating even in defrost operation.
The carbon factor
A key advantage of GAHPs is their use of gas rather than
electricity for operation. Not only is natural gas typically
around a third the price of electricity but,
by using it directly at the point of use,
GAHPs can provide 98% of usable
heat energy use – around double
that of electrically-operated
heat pumps – resulting in less
A key benefit of GAHPs
energy waste, lower operating
costs and a smaller carbon
is their suitability for use
footprint.
“
in both new build and
refurbishment projects.
Mike Hefford
Remeha Commercial
Improved environmental ratings
GAHPs can also significantly improve the BREEAM rating of a
building. The use of ammonia, a naturally forming chemical,
as the refrigerant brings two credits for zero ozone depletion
potential and zero global warming potential and a third for
the absence of Hydrofluorocarbons (HFC) refrigerants.
Additional points come from the ability of this low carbon
technology to achieve Class 5 NOx levels by using a
condensing heat generator with a premixed modulating
gas burner.
Flexible and versatile
Importantly, GAHPs are relatively straightforward to install
and easy to operate. A key benefit of GAHPs is their suitability
DP330
for use in both new build and refurbishment projects.
GAHPs may be specified as a single unit or in cascade
arrangement, as the primary source of clean energy
or in conjunction with high-efficiency condensing boilers
in a hybrid system.
Practical and affordable
On refurbishment projects, GAHPs can be easily retrofitted
within an existing heating system either as a bolt-on to
serviceable boilers, or in conjunction with replacement
gas condensing boilers. Importantly, they require only
an extremely low electrical running current to operate –
just 1.09kW for a 35kW GAHP. This makes them a
straightforward and affordable retrofit option as there
is no need to increase the electrical incoming supply.
Mind the gap
A recent report from the Government agency, Innovate UK,
found that modern non-domestic buildings routinely use
3.5 times the amount of energy they are designed to
consume and produce on average 3.8 times more carbon
than predicted in the design stage. Heat loss and teething
problems with new technologies were some of the identified
causes. While GAHPs are relatively easy to install, good system
design is essential to achieve the maximum efficiencies and
savings. Look for suppliers with a thorough knowledge of
the technology, who can advise on how best to maximise
performance through good design, good integration and
specially configured controls. The efficiencies achievable by
GAHPs – or indeed any heating technology – are dependent
on a number of factors, amongst which are the ambient
temperatures and flow and return temperatures, so ask
for data on the achievable gas utilisation efficiency (GUE)
of GAHPs at different temperatures to enable accurate
calculation of their performance.
With its proven high performance and ability to deliver
long-term sustainable benefits, gas absorption heat pump
technology ticks all boxes, meeting the carbon requirements
of Part L of the Building Regulations for new build
developments and supporting the decarbonisation of heating
in our existing buildings. As the Government prepares to
legislate its fifth carbon budget, encouraging a further limit
in harmful emissions, it is good to know that with GAHPs we
have the means to make carbon reduction in buildings a real
prospect and effect positive change.

Fusing efficient ventilation and heating in one
DP339
Strategic thinking inside the box is enabling specifiers to fuse efficient
ventilation and heating all in one. Independent air movement specialist,
Gilberts (Blackpool) has developed a natural ventilation unit that also
features both heat reclamation and space heating. The Mistrale MFS
Fusion unit can now be optioned with an integrated LPHW coil,
which provides a complete solution for both morning warm-up and any
boost heating requirements. The stand-alone unit is installed as normal
through the building façade. The core MFS appliance provides natural
ventilation and blends the incoming fresh air with the warmth from the
exhaust air without the need for a heat exchanger. With the LPHW coil
option, for morning warm-up, the coil is energized and the fan runs on
full speed for approximately 20 minutes (depending on night set-back temperatures and flow
temperatures) to provide an even heat distribution across the room before occupancy.

Optimal climate separation from Biddle
Biddle’s IndAC2 industrial air curtain guarantees an optimal
climate separation to cold stores while maintaining a constant
room temperature and preventing energy loss. The IndAC2
ambient (without heating) is suitable above a door between a front
hall or loading bay and a cold store. The air curtain operates in
combination with a fast reaction door, preventing misting or icing
in the doorway. As soon as the door opens, the ambient IndAC2
quickly starts creating the climate separation. The air curtain,
which is installed in the front hall above the cold store door,
draws air from the front hall into the unit and creates a
downward directed, laminar air stream to separate the two areas.
As a consequence, energy consumption is reduced because the
cooling equipment in the cold store doesn’t have to work as hard
to keep the room cold.

heating, ventilation & energy efficiency
Making tracks in energy efficient heating
Stewarts Lane railway depot in Battersea has been providing
maintenance and stabling for the South East of England’s rolling
stock since 1862 and was, at one point, the largest locomotive
capacity in the Southern region. Having stabled the Royal Train,
one of the depot’s main uses today is for the maintenance of the
prestigious Belmond British Pullman, sister train to the Venice
Simplon-Orient-Express. Following the installation of a Nor-RayVac system in the high bay and main locomotive shed at Belmond
British Pullman 28 years ago, the system now needed to be replaced. AmbiRad was able to offer a
suitable, effective and economic heating solution. Blanket heat coverage was not a necessity in the
rail shed as only the areas where personnel are working needed to be heated. When operatives are
working on one part of the train, zoning enables all other parts of the radiant heating system to be
switched off. Over time this produces considerable fuel economies and cost reductions.
DP343
Demand for Rinnai UK’s 2016 programme of training modules is
rising as specifiers increasingly appreciate the energy saving benefits
of gas fired continuous flow water heaters. According to Rinnai’s technical
and compliance officer, Ian Jenkins, who designed the Rinnai courses:
“We have responded to the demand by organising training with multiple
CPD courses running in May. Specifiers who would like to attend a Rinnai
CPD course can arrange them via their local Rinnai sales consultant who
will be happy to organise a module that suits their needs. CPD Roadshow
courses have been designed for M&E consultants and specifiers, design
and build engineers, facilities managers and contractors. These courses
have already attracted praise from CIBSE. For example, it says of the
Continuous Flow Water Heating System Sizing and Design course in an
appraisal: “The course delivers what it outlines and is well constructed.”

During the past few years, the 19th century Bridport United Church has
undergone a major renovation to modernise the facility while retaining its
traditional characteristics. As part of this, it was recommended that a new
heating solution be installed. Having previously collaborated on several
projects in the area, Worldwise consultants identified Jaga as the
manufacturer that could provide the best all-encompassing radiator
specification and supply service. The Jaga Maxi LST Continuous DBE
was chosen as the primary heat source for the main area. As the radiators
are essentially joined together, it gives the visual appearance of one long,
sleek radiator lining the two main sides of the hall. The radiators are fitted
with Jaga’s LST casing in order to fulfil the church’s safety requirements,
keeping surface temperatures below 43°C and making them entirely safe
to touch – even when running at maximum output.

Steve Clarke, group marketing manager of The Fuelcard People, is well

Aico will be exhibiting at FIREX (21-23 June, ExCel London), the long
standing international fire and security event. The company will be
displaying its range of domestic smoke and CO alarms, along with working
examples of its latest data extraction technologies. One of the products

Multi-Sensor fire alarm contains two sensor types, optical and heat, to
constantly monitor smoke and heat levels, sending and receiving information
via its intelligent detection software. The alarm interprets this sensor information to
automatically provide the best response to all fire types and reduce potential false
alarms. Aico was the first company to launch a Multi-Sensor for the domestic market
and this latest model comes with a host of features including AudioLINK and RadioLINK+
data extraction technology, easier installation and self-monitoring function.

FFE brings bloodhound to FIREX
The supersonic Bloodhound car is coming to FIREX in June.
Fire safety specialist, FFE will have a full-sized replica of the car
on its booth at FIREX (stand E180). Why? Because Bloodhound
uses FFE’s Talentum UV/Dual IR flame detectors. The jet-powered
Bloodhound will first attempt to break the existing land speed
record of 763 mph and, once that is accomplished, it aims to break
the 1,000mph barrier in the coming years. Safety is therefore
paramount; by utilising infra-red (IR) sensing, Talentum UV/Dual
detectors can detect visible and invisible flames from virtually any source, irrespective of any dust, steam
or smoke present and are immune to the effects of wind or draughts. They also give the highest immunity
to false flame sources. Also on display at FIREX will be FFE’s Fireray 5000 motorised, auto-aligning optical
beam smoke detector, which is suited to large interiors with high ceilings, enabling coverage of a large area at
minimal cost. The Fireray 5000 combines an infrared transmitter and receiver in the same unit and operates
by projecting a well-defined beam to a reflective prism, which returns the beam to the receiver for analysis.

A tailor-made solution
DP363
Creative solutions for the ceiling of the new
£26m Student Centre at the University of Essex
demonstrates how far Hunter Douglas will go to keep
true to an architect’s vision. The design for the ceiling
at the new Silberrad Student Centre at the university’s
Colchester campus saw the team devise a creative
solution to accommodate the 70m2 solid wood open
linear European oak ceiling. As well using a patented
clip used to secure the panels to the sendzimir
galvanised steel suspension rails, the panels, which appear to float, required specially-made metal
fixings to accommodate the non-standard width. The original design called for a panel width that was
narrower than the metal fixing clip, so Hunter Douglas suggested a wider panel with a deep groove in
the front to give the appearance of very narrow boards.

Camphill Village Trust (CVT) has installed Aico AudioLINK
Ei208 Carbon Monoxide (CO) alarms throughout its
Botton Village properties – the Trust’s first and largest

Barbakan Delicatessen in Chorlton, Manchester
a makeover as part of its refurbishment project.
Polyflor’s hardwearing Expona Commercial PUR
luxury vinyl tiles were installed to the shop floor
area. The store owners chose the Blue Varnished
Wood design from the collection which has the
look of pseudo-industrial timber which has been
stripped and varnished many times over to give
a worn effect. With a 2.5mm gauge and 0.55 wear layer, the Expona Commercial range features a total
of 55 wood, stone and abstract-effect designs which are suitable for use in the retail sector and other
heavy commercial environments where there is likely to be a high level of foot traffic.

Sika puts its seal on Fife wind turbine
For its ultra-high compressive strength, SikaGrout3200 from Sika
was specified for the construction of a 75m-high wind turbine at
Lower Melville Wood landfill site in Fife which it is estimated will create
enough energy to power nearly 200 homes. Developed specifically for
use in the onshore wind farm generation, SikaGrout3200 was suitable
for the project which is designed to generate 600MWh per year and
reduce 290 tonnes of CO2 emissions. Among the product’s features
are its excellent fatigue and dynamic resistance, high early strength
build-up, pumpable fluid consistencies and resistance to freeze-thaw
cycles. A total of 600kg of product was applied on top of a cured
concrete base, filling the void between the turbine’s steel flange and
the concrete to provide a solid structural bedding and support the weight of the tower. Mixed on site and
pumped in a continuous application, SikaGrout3200 cures to form a watertight seal with a strength similar
to steel.

Romag glass catches the eye
Jet Aire

specified as an eye-catching feature on a new passenger stop completed for
Greater Manchester’s Metrolink tramway system. More than 132m2
of clear glass laminate has been supplied for the Exchange Square stop in
the city centre, where it will provide an attractive protective canopy for
passengers sheltering from the elements. The final design was produced
using 17.5mm toughened heat soaked laminated glass, drilled and shaped.

Jet Aire has announced the promotion of employee Lee

Whitear to the newly created role of operations support role
within the company, working closely in the operations and
service delivery departments. Lee has been employed by Jet
Aire for two and a half years, firstly as a CCTV Engineer and
secondly as a member of the Jet-Vac team. However, Jet Aire
knew he could be of even more value by coming back into the
office and helping to choreograph the workloads of the team and deal with any onsite
issues. In the first three months of his new role, Lee has been instrumental in helping
Jet Aire improve customer services and overall professionalism. His knowledge of the
works required has helped the team better manage contract works and the engineers
know there is always someone back in the office to deal with any potential issues.

as an outdoor entertainment space. 900m² of Alpha Antique in Brindle was
installed with its distressed aged look blending beautifully into any

suitable for period settings such as Hull Old Town. Alongside the Alpha

to denote parking spaces.
A combination of external Venetian blinds and curved
aerofoil fins have been incorporated into the façade,
providing shade to office areas and the building’s reception and conference wing.
In total, Levolux supplied and installed 411 external, motorised specialist Venetian
blinds against glazed openings to office areas. The external blinds feature 60mm
wide, perforated, roll-formed aluminium slats. The horizontal slats are protected
by vertical tensioned cable guides.
