Fun in the Sun (FITS) is a summer learning
program founded sixteen years ago and
directed by United Way with the partnership
and efforts of over 90 partner organizations.
FITS provides a comprehensive, integrated
network of services to disadvantaged children
and their families to strengthen academic and
parenting skills that would otherwise languish during
the summertime.
Lunch Bunch is a fun and rewarding volunteer opportunity, where local professionals and community members serve as mentors to
the Fun in the Sun scholars during the lunch hour. In 2012, over 400 individuals from 37 organizations participated in Lunch Bunch and
the lunch activity was voted into the top 3 favorite FITS activities by FITS scholars.

Recipient of
2012 National
Excellence in Summer
Learning Award
Thank You For Your
Partnership & Support
United Way of Santa Barbara County’s (UWSBC) Fun in
the Sun was awarded the 2012 National Excellence in
Summer Learning Award! UWSBC received this award at
the National Summer Learning Association’s (NSLA) annual
conference “Summer Changes Everything,” in Pittsburgh from
October 22-24th, 2012. At this conference, the Fun in the Sun
program was celebrated as the best comprehensive summer
learning program in the country for low-income, at-risk
youth. Hundreds of education researchers, teachers, district
administrators, superintendents, and nonprofits from urban
landscapes, suburban backdrops to rural communities and
every municipality in between gathered together to review
and share best practices in summer learning.
UWSBC knows that it takes the entire community to make
Fun in the Sun successful and is proud to share this honor with
the 90+ program partners and 500+ volunteers who served
200 kids and 150 parents. Fun in the Sun not only celebrates
this award, but also celebrates that in summer 2012, 80%
of participants gained an incredible 2 reading grade levels,
using UWSBC’s Power Reading program. Fun in the Sun 2012
program expanded Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts,
and Math (STEAM) programing to include Lego Robotics, an
activity which was a unanimous success with both staff and
students. During Lego Robotics, students enjoyed building
simple machines and operating them with wireless laptop
computers while developing skills in relevant subject areas.
In 2013, FITS will seek to improve the academic, social,
behavioral and life skills of each participant while reducing
and reversing summer learning loss which research shows
accounts for two thirds of the achievement gap separating
income groups. The program will offer participants a fun
learning environment with a daily emphasis on literacy,
including reading and writing. Afternoon enrichment
opportunities include activities in science, technology,
engineering, arts, and math (STEAM), service learning, values,
character education, college & career readiness, outdoor
education and field trips throughout the summer.
Thanks to your support, this program has continued to grow
in quality and scope for these children and families. 2012/2013 FITS Partnership

United for Literacy
Parent Education, Access to Books, and Online Reading Improvement are the three program
strategies of United for Literacy that work together to engage families in learning and building
literacy skills from prenatal age to senior citizens. Because learning starts at birth, United Way
of Santa Barbara County (UWSBC) sponsors programs like bilingual neighborhood Parent
Empowerment Classes to help low-income parents increase their knowledge on how to engage in
their child’s school readiness and learning. In Santa Barbara 68% of low-income families do not
have access to age-appropriate books, so UWSBC partners with Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library
and Scholastic’s My Books program, to provide brand new, age appropriate books in the homes of
over 1,600 low-income children every month from infancy to Kindergarten.
In addition, UWSBC recognizes that most students enjoy reading when they know how to read.
When students dislike reading, they rarely read independently, therefore, missing the opportunity
to develop the breadth and depth of vocabulary, automaticity, and stamina required to read and
comprehend complex text. Consequently, our mission has been to improve literacy proficiency
rates in Santa Barbara County with the help of advanced online reading improvement tools, Lexia
and Reading Plus. To date, over 48 businesses, youth serving organizations, schools, and afterschool programs have piloted or implemented these programs, reaching over 4, 500 students.
Students tell us upon completing a semester using these tools they have the skills and confidence
to read and begin to enjoy books! Teachers tell us this sort of advancement is astonishing.
Over the next ten years with these key strategic program elements we are going to increase local
high school graduation rates and the number of students reading at or above grade level by 50%.
United for Financial Empowerment
Our goal is to increase financial stability among low-income families in Santa Barbara County by
50% over the next ten years. Our Financial Empowerment Partnership (FEP) is working directly with
low-moderate income families to provide access to affordable banking, free tax assistance, products,
and financial literacy classes. This tax season, with a collaborative of 21 partners and 185 volunteers
we reached over 2,600 families, which brought back $4.7 million in refunds to our community. Many
of the clients have never filed a tax return, have nothing put away for their children’s education or
their own retirement, and don’t even have a bank account. Tax refund checks are often the largest
check a low-income family will receive in a given year, making tax season an opportune time to help
families think about and implement long-term savings plans and other asset-building strategies.
FEP organizations encourage families to use their refunds wisely by starting or contributing to
retirement accounts, college savings, and emergency savings.
United for Health
Too often Santa Barbara County families have to make hard decisions to keep families healthy by
either putting food on the table or buying prescription medicines. United Way of Santa Barbara
County has been working hard to improve the health of the most vulnerable members of our
community- seniors and low-income families.
Since 2010, we’ve distributed and trained thousands of local families how to use medical services
discount cards. Last year, this program expanded to include discounts on a variety medical
services like diabetes supplies, vision screenings, and even pet medications. In our third year, we
increased the average savings from 59% to 65% of the regular cost. In 2012 local families claimed
38,000 prescriptions and medical services, collectively saving the Santa Barbara community
$1.7 million. Ultimately, this Medical Services Discount Card is an important aspect to improving
the quality of people’s lives by reducing the strain on public assistance and emergency medical
services and ensuring families have access to their medications to keep chronic conditions from
becoming serious.

United Way of Santa Barbara County’s Young Leaders Society (YLS) was
launched in 2009 to provide community involvement, personal development,
and network opportunities for young professionals under the age of 40. YLS
adopted United Way’s priorities to help children, families & seniors with a focus
on education, financial stability and health.

YLS members not only become involved with various United Way and community
partnerships like Fun in the Sun and Day of Caring, they also plan and execute
their own programs like “United We Read” to help boost literacy skills and the
enjoyment of reading in elementary school children and “United We Bowl” to fund
such programs.
Last year alone, over 100 YLS members and guests raised over $5,570 at the
Painted Cabernet and United We Bowl fundraisers to support UWSBC programs
and initiatives. Through Fun in the Sun’s Lunch Bunch component, and YLS’ United
We Read, over 75 young professionals have positively impacted the lives of
hundreds of local, low-income children by volunteering and serving as mentors.
Through United Ways’ network, members also gain the opportunity to meet likeminded civic and business leaders and become acquainted with Santa Barbara’s
prominent philanthropists during workshops and social events. Although
our primary focus is professional development, time is designated for social
interaction at every event. In the end, these workshops allow our members to
grow as professionals to ultimately become leaders in our community.

On Saturday, September 15, 2012 United Way of Santa
Barbara County (UWSBC) held the 21st Annual Day
of Caring volunteer event to kick-off its Community
Campaign. The campaign raises pledges to create
and operate dozens of community based partnerships
focused on achieving community driven 10 year goals in
Education, Financial Empowerment and Health. At 8 a.m.
volunteers gathered at the Ben Page Youth Center and
enjoyed a breakfast, which was generously donated
by Albertson’s.
At the kick-off, the Dos Pueblos Drumline marched
into Ben Page Center followed by the Santa Barbara
City College Cheer Squad to rally volunteers and create
excitement. Congresswoman Lois Capps said a few heartfelt and encouraging words to the volunteers: “you are a community
united in caring, you inspire me!” The San Marcos High School Madrigals performed the National Anthem, and Mayor Helene
Schneider along with Joanne Funari, UWSBC’s Community Campaign Chair and President of Business First Bank closed the
rally. From 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. volunteers helped local non-profit agencies with “hands-on” work assignments.
Over 1,500 volunteers participated, including young people from local schools, families, churches, community service groups
and workplaces at over 50 sites across the Tri-counties. The largest team for the 3rd year in a row was Santa Barbara City
College, led by Lisa Lopez. Some of the largest work sites included Bohnett Park, Dos Pueblos High School (Goleta Valley
Beautiful) and Alpha Resource Center. Projects varied between landscape work, planting, painting, habitat restoration and
office work throughout Carpinteria, Santa Barbara, Goleta, and Santa Ynez. The work that was done in just four hours equals
to more than $275,000 worth of improvements to the Santa Barbara Community.

Red Feather Ball
Honoring
Anne Smith Towbes
and the
Hutton Parker Foundation
November 2, 2013
The Fess Parker at 6:00pm
United Way will be honoring the
2013 Abercrombie Community
Excellence Award
recipients for their combined
contributions of volunteerism
and philanthropy to the community.
Red Feather Ball
The 16th Annual Red Feather Ball transported the attendees to the Piazza de
Penna Rossa (Plaza of the Red Feather) for a magical evening in Venice, Italy.
They were seated to the wafting Italian tunes of Art Deco and His Symphony
Orchestra. Guests were amazed by the attention to detail that had them
remembering their own trips to Italy. One guest remarked, “I could scarcely
believe I was in Fess Parker Hall.”
Ann Gursey, flew in from Colorado to Host the evening’s festivities with her
professionalism and infectious personality. She started the evening off with
a United Way tribute to Katherine Abercrombie, 1915 – 2012 for all she has
meant to the Santa Barbara Communty and the Red Feather Ball since its
inception in 1997.
The Red Feather Ball, United for Literacy Benefit supports Fun in the Sun and
Power Reading program scholarships raising an average of $300,000 each year.
In addition, we look forward to recognizing the extraordinary contributions of
an individual or couple and an organization. This year Bob & Val Montgomery
and Deckers Outdoor Corporation were the center of attention as they
received their Abercrombie Community Excellence Awards from Presenters,
Lady Leslie Ridley-Tree and Ron Werft, CEO of Cottage Health Care System.
Angel Martinez, Chairman, CEO and President of Deckers impressed and
inspired the crowd with his personal Horatio Alger story about being a
youngster growing up in the South Bronx. He shared his memory of when he
went to his first camp on a scholarship; it was then he realized that people
cared about him, and that made a lasting impact on him. Bob Montgomery
spoke on behalf of Val and himself sharing his knowledge about how
United Way of Santa Barbara County has changed over the years to make a
real impact with the programs that we design, administrate and partner in.
Their humility was highlighted by his words, “That Val and I will endeavor to
live up to this honor.”
We want to thank our Co-Chairs, Ed & Sue Birch and Barry & Jo Berkus for
their help in launching such a successful event.

All Stars
_____
Community
All Stars are
individuals
who have
contributed a
net of $500
or more
undesignated
to United Way
of Santa
Barbara County
for three
or more
consecutive
years.
Endowment & Gift Planning Services
United Way’s Endowment creates
a stable foundation to ensure the
long-range financial health of our
organization and the vital programs
that improve the lives of children,
families, and seniors in our
community. Each of the endowment
funds have been designed to address
the needs that you, our donors and
volunteers, have told us are important
to the people of Santa Barbara County.
Ross Bixby
2013 Legacy Supporter of the Year
After moving to Santa Barbara in
1950, Ross Bixby began a successful
career in real estate. He understood
the importance of giving back to his
community and made a personal
commitment to support United Way
as an annual donor at the Tocqueville
level, and as an active volunteer
encouraging others to donate to
United Way as he collected pledges from the downtown
Santa Barbara merchants.
Gifts to the endowment are usually the result of careful
financial planning that can benefit both the donor and United
Way. Only the income from the endowment is spent, while
the principal is invested for growth and preserved to generate
perpetual support for the needs of generations to come.
Ross became a member of the Heritage Club when he
named United Way as the beneficiary of his estate in his
living trust. He celebrated his affiliation with United Way
and was a hands-on volunteer at Fun in the Sun, and looked
forward to attending the Heritage Club Luncheons every
year where we honor those visionaries who leave legacy
gifts to United Way.
