If you are concerned about the appearance of your face and neck, a facelift may be right for you. Some of the areas that a facelift can address are these: Ÿ Sagging midface Ÿ Deep creases below the eyelids Ÿ Deep creases along the nose extending to the corner of the mouth Ÿ Loose skin or fat deposits under the chin and jaw giving the appearance of a double chin in a person with normal weight There are many myths and misconceptions surrounding the topic of facelift surgery. In this month’s article, we hope to clarify any confusion and shed light on the topic. Myth: Facelifts create a plastic, unnatural look. Truth: Too many surgical procedures or poorly performed procedures are often the cause of the plastic look many associate with having a facelift. When performed by a qualified, board certified plastic surgeon, a facelift can result in a natural, more youthful appearance. Myth: Facelifts require an incision completely around the head. Truth: The traditional facelift incision involves an incision beginning in front of or just above the ear and runs behind the ear into the hairline. An alternative to this is a limited incision, which uses shorter incisions at the temples and continues around the ear. Myth: A facelift does not leave any scars. Truth: Scars are an inevitable part of any surgical procedure. A qualified plastic surgeon is trained to minimize the appearance of scars and should be able to hide scars within the folds and creases of the skin. Myth: Anyone can have a facelift. Truth: As with any surgical procedure, the patient’s medical history must be considered to ensure a positive outcome is achieved. Facelift surgery may be a good option if you are in good health, do not smoke and have a healthy, positive outlook about your appearance with realistic goals. Myth: Recovering from a facelift is a painful and long process. Truth: Most surgical procedures require at least some downtime to allow the body to recover; however, most recover from a facelift within a week and report that it is not an overly painful process. Swelling typically lasts a few days and bruising should subside after several weeks. Myth: Facelifts are costly procedures. Truth: The cost for a facelift can vary from surgeon to surgeon. The price is also dependent on the metropolitan area that the procedure is performed as well as the surgeon’s experience. It is important to consider not only price when selecting a surgeon, but also surgeon skill and your comfort level with the surgeon. While most insurance plans do not cover facelift procedures, we are pleased to offer financing options to interested patients. Truth: Facelifts are long lasting procedures when the proper care is taken by the patient. The best way to keep your face looking its best is with the regular use of sun protection, not smoking and living an otherwise healthy lifestyle. The results of a facelift will be appreciated many years after the procedure. In fact, facelift patients will appear more youthful decades following the procedure. If you would like to learn more about facelift surgery, call today to Dr. Stoeckel’s Case of the Month: This is a 60 year old female who presented to me with an interest in facial rejuvenation. She did not want to have a quick fix that needed to be repeated, but rather was interested in a relatively long term solution. Her biggest concerns were improving her neck and jowls. She also was very interested in adding some volume to her cheeks. She had a lower lid blepharoplasty in 2007 with somewhat disappointing results. I found Martha to be a great candidate for a face and neck lift. She had lost some significant volume in the midface and benefited nicely from fat grafting as an adjuvant treatment. I added a small amount of fat to her upper lids as well to reduce the “hollow” appearance under her brow. The facial tissue has been elevated and tightened, but she does not have a wind-swept appearance.
