BUT COMPLEX
Any qualified technician is capable of servicing and
maintaining a DPF (diesel particulate filter) anti-pollution
system. The problem is that the technology and components
of DPF systems may be totally different from one vehicle to
another.
This feature explains the key points that will enable you to
quickly identify the technology used on the vehicle, as well as
the components of this system.
THE PURPOSE AND THE
OPERATION OF THE DPF
The DPF captures particles of soot produced by the combustion process in the
engine. The gradual accumulation of these particles clogs the filter, at which point the
regeneration operation transforms the accumulated soot into ash.
A number of technologies have been developed to reach the high temperatures
(about 550°C) required to convert the soot into ash. Today’s vehicles use all of these
technologies:
• Systems without additives: VAG, BMW, Opel, etc.
• Systems with additives: mainly Peugeot, Citroën and Fiat.
The loading status of the DPF triggers the regeneration. The loading status is
measured according to certain components that are present in both types of system.

HOW THEY WORK
The particulate filter is positioned near the engine in order to limit heat loss and
to guarantee the temperatures required to burn the soot particles.
THE MAIN COMPONENTS
OF THE SYSTEM
In addition to the gas pressure sensor, the pre-filter temperature sensor and the
air mass flow meter, these systems comprise:
•a lambda sensor, usually located in the exhaust manifold
•a 5th injector (on certain Renault and Toyota vehicles only)
All of these devices are controlled directly by the injection ECU.

PERFORM DIAGNOSTICS
Read the fault code memory and access the settings of the above components.
AFTER REPLACING A COMPONENT
To program an ECU after replacing a differential pressure sensor or
the 5th injector.
AFTER REPLACING THE FILTER (certain models only)
To program an ECU.
TO RESET THE OIL LEVEL
Due to technical considerations, certain makes (Fiat, Ford, Mazda) require the
oil level to be reset to avoid any problems with the DPF (if the oil is changed).
SYSTEMS WITH ADDITIVE
HOW THEY
WORK
An additive is added to the fuel
to reduce the temperature to
the level required to combust
the soot particles. The system
components are then controlled
by the injection ECU or the
additive ECU, depending on the
generation (there are currently
four generations).
TIP
Use the ExpressDiag function to quickly identify
the generation of the system you are diagnosing.
If the following appear in addition to the injection
ECU:
•AddGo 1 = 1st generation system
•AddGo 2 or 3 = 2nd generation system
•PAddgo = 3rd generation system
•Injection ECU only
(PSA, Fiat) = 4th generation system
THE MAIN COMPONENTS
OF THE SYSTEM

Today's vehicles are fitted with four generations of this technology, which each
have their own characteristics.
In addition to the gas pressure sensor, the pre-filter temperature sensor and the
air mass flow meter, these systems comprise:
•two temperature filters - upstream and downstream (1st generation)
•Fuel cap open sensor (1st, 2nd and 3rd generations)
•Injector + additive pump (1st generation)
•Metering pump (2nd, 3rd and 4th generations)
•Additive gauge (1st generation)
The fourth generation no longer uses an additive ECU dedicated to the injection
of the ceria, since the metering pump is controlled directly by the injection ECU.
I USE MY MULTI-DIAG® TO:
PERFORM DIAGNOSTICS
Read the fault code memory and access the settings and actuator tests of the
above components in the injection and additive ECUs.
TO FORCE REGENERATION
Manual DPF regeneration.
Caution: this operation is dangerous and requires the use of compulsory
equipment.
