Welcome to the 11th annual Ennis Street Arts
Festival! From the 4th to the 10th of July the
streets of our beautiful town will come alive with
fun, art, culture and entertainment provided by
International, National and Local Artists. This year
we are celebrating ‘Clare-County of Culture 2016’
with our theme, which is ‘Culture agus Ceol’.
Of course this would not be possible without the
many volunteers and the local community who
put their time and energy into making this festival
the fun family event it has become.
This year we would like to dedicate our festival in
memory of Sarah Monahan. Sarah gave so much
of her time and energy to working for the arts in
the community over the past few years and she
loved to see the town of Ennis come to life every
year during the Ennis Street Arts Festival. Sarah
was also a great friend; warm, caring, great fun,
and always ready with a kind word. She will be
greatly missed by us all.
So, in honor of Sarah Monahan, we wish, for
everyone to enjoy every minute, every laugh,
every smile of this wonderful experience at this
year’s festival.

you to please respect the by-laws by not drinking

Eddie Lenihan, Irelands Premier Story Teller.
Eddie has been collecting folklore in Co. Clare and further
afield for nearly 40 years. For this year’s festival Eddie
will share his story “Fairy Music”.
In this stories session, Eddie Lenihan explains:
“There are many stories in Irish folklore of gifts received
by mortals from the fairies in return for favours done.
These gifts can take various forms: athletic powers, for
example, or great dexterity of hand. But one of the most
valued, surely, was (and perhaps still is!) the gift of great
music. A good musician was welcome in any company,
especially one with “fairy” music.
But sometimes, even with the best will in the world,
the getting of that music can be a dangerous business,
indeed.”
The Arts Council’s new, upgraded CULTUREFOX
events guide is now live. Free, faster, easy to use
– and personalised for you. Never miss out again.

artistically. This screening of Silent Moves is supported by The

The Musical Menagerie
presented by Your Mans’s Puppet
Show and Boris Hunka
THURS
7 JULY
‘The Musical Menagerie’ Puppet Show features the
story of two zoo-keepers reminiscing about their first
days in the job. A tall tail tale is told about a Gibbon
that lost his tail, while meeting exotic animals from far
and wide, including Sheridan the Sloth, Imelda the Rhino
Hornbill, Kevin the Snake and Gilbert – the Gibbon who’s
lost his groove.
This magical musical is told with all original songs
including “I’m a Lean Mean Sleeping Machine”, “The
Rainforest Jive” to name but two. The animals combine
breath-taking realism with elements of fantasy that
have become the trademark of Your Man’s Puppets.
The Musical Menagerie Puppet Show delivers a
wonderfully imaginative performance which leaves the
audience full of memories of a great, shared family
experience, suitable for all ages.

WiLd! tells the story of 10-year-old Billy, who has been
diagnosed with the condition ADHD and brilliantly
captures Billy’s world from his funny, quirky distracted
view of the world.
Billy lives with his Mum while his Dad and elder brother
no longer live at home. Billy decides to look after the
bee hive that belonged to his Dad, trying to stop the
bees from swarming and hoping his Dad will recognise
that he has done a good thing - perhaps this might
persuade Dad to return?
Due to flooding in Ennis in recent years there has been
an increase in rare and unusual tropical fish around
the town of Ennis and they are not just confined to the
rivers anymore. There have been sightings of them
around the streets so keep an eye out for them on
saturday and sunday as experts have said that due to
weather conditions there could be an outbreak again.

8 JULY
A copse of young weeping willow trees will be dressed
in formal evening gowns to remember lost girls and
women in Ireland and around the world. 20 trees will
be transformed into elegant botanical creatures, half
human - half plant, adorned in gorgeous flamboyant
dresses to celebrate the lives of missing girls and
women. Each tree will take on the identity of one such
individual and become a vivacious living portrait. The
installation creates a tender emotional and ecological
connection between trees and humanity.
Áine Phillips is a performance artist and Head of
Sculpture at Burren College of Art. She is based in
Ennis and her work has been exhibited and performed
across five continents. ‘Tree Girls’ Installation will
be officially opened by Áine Phillips with the special
collaboration of Street Art Project Performances from
Budapest.
The ‘Tree Girls’ will be displayed during the festival
weekend.

Maria is an Irish singer, actor and filmmaker. She has
sung live with Snow Patrol and has spent more than
two decades performing all over the world before
audiences at Glastonbury, Oxygen and the Cambridge
Folk Festival, and in small, intimate theatres.
She honed her craft as a performer with Hothouse
Flowers and The Black Velvet Band before performing
in the movie The Commitments and by then, Maria’s
reputation was strong enough to earn her a place
singing on the album The Lady Sings The Blues
alongside Aretha Franklin, Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald,
Nina Simone, Tina Turner and Annie Lennox.

an eclectic trio of virtuosic explorer musicians from around
the Irish coast led by “extreme fiddling” maestro Eoghan Neff
from Cork.
Music Generation Clare
3pm
Celebrated as “a pinnacle of acoustic music”, incendiary lines
spontaneously erupt over a symphony of impossible acoustic
fiddle sounds that are layered and looped live; further blended
with inimitable bass grooves by Alan Pentony from Limerick;
and interfused with pristine vocals and lilting beats by “may
be the finest drummer ever produced here”, Sean Carpio from
Dublin.
With a string of awards and accolades from international
stage, screen and studio collaborations, this unique trio is
well and truly “a step beyond”. Special guest performances
by some of Ennis’ finest musicians as well as a Wild Atlantic
Ensemble Suite in collaboration with Music Generation Clare
will make this into another wild Atlantic evening to remember.

Ideas of mortality and temporality are explored in this
abstract narrative that will feature as an outdoor video
installation which can be seen from Steele’s Rock for
Ennis Street Festival. The piece references Tom Steele who
was a landlord, inventor, engineer, soldier and author. The
installation has been designed as a site specific piece, using
the buildings that are associated with Tom Steele’s life, like
‘Steele’s Rock’, the place where he used to sit, in the hope of
catching a glimpse of the woman he loved, Matilda Crowe.
Tom Steele’s story has so many different elements and
facets to it, one that runs the full gamut of emotions — from
victories and achievements to tragedy and sorrow.
Founded in January 2014 by Carlos Zamora, the
ESAF Samba Band plays Brasilian Percussion with a
strong sense of community, where a lively carnival
atmosphere will make you Dance..!!!
This temporary video installation is an open, innovate and
evolving work that combines the myth, memory and dreams
embedded into these buildings that are indelibly linked with his
life. Although entirely contingent on the development process,
the work will largely constitute a multi-layered exploration
of the area surrounding Steele’s Rock, the River Fergus and
Callaun House his former home which is now a derelict site.
