Volunteer Coordinator Leslie Beamer EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR'S REPORT: . Our 35th Annual Central PA Jazz Festival, held in various locations from August 27th to 30th, was a huge success. All of the events - the Riverboat Cruise, Jazz Party, Jam Session, Concert at the Gretna Playhouse, and the annual Picnic - were well attended and had amazing performances. We welcomed many new artists as well as some old friends and hope that you were able to attend and celebrate with us. We are grateful to all of you, our loyal fans and friends, for your continued support through the years. Please tell your friends what a great time you had and encourage them to attend the Fetival next year. We thank Tom & Donna Weik for underwriting the Central PA Jazz Festival’s August 29th concert at Mt. Gretna Playhouse in honor of their departed friend and long time CPFJ & Gretna Music supporter, Leesa Troy Crnogorac. The performance - A NIGHT OF LEGENDS - presented Freddy Cole’s Quartet, a group that featured drummer Jerome Jennings,, renowned Phiadelphia saxophonist Bootsie Barnes, and bassist Elias Bailey. Eddie Henderson’s Quintet with special guests Billy Hart, George Cables, Eric Alexander and Doug Weiss will closed the show - quite a lineup of jazz stars - there were 500 in the audience for this concert at Mt. Gretna’s Playhouse the largest jazz audience at Gretna in many years! Our gratitude also to Premier Wealth Management (Robert Pugliese) for their underwriting grant for this year’s Festival - enabling us to present anpther year of great music. . This year’s 35th Annual Jazz Party was held in the new River City Blues Club with two bands upstairs and two bands downstairs from 7PM till 12:30AM. We thank the management at River City, especially Jonas Hair, and his staff for welcoming jazz into their facility - it was great evening of celebration and music. . We also really appreciate those who purchased an advertisement or listed their names as a Festival Donor in the CPFJ Festival/Fall Concert Series Program. This program was distributed at all Festival events and will be passed out at all three Fall Concerts including the huge crowd at the Dauphin County Jazz & Wine Festival. Many of you advertised your businesses, sent messages to a friend or loved one, or just offered words of support for the Festival and CPFJ. . Check out the “Steady Gigs” & “One Time Only” pages in this issue - it is the most complete list of Central PA jazz events available. We hope you will get out often to support the establishments that are hosting live jazz and give a listen to our talented area jazz musicians there is a lot of great music happening right down the street and it will only continue to be there if there is an audience. Get out often and listen!! . Our CPFJ Jam Sessions will continue at the new River City Blues Club on Cameron St. in Harrisburg - sessions will be on Fourth Monday of every month from 7-10 p.m. Gullifty’s has resumed their Jam Sessions on the Second Wednesdays. Our Jam Sessions provide a great atmosphere for musicians to meet and share ideas and it is always entertaining for the listeners. . Fall Concert Series News: The Spanish Harlem Orchestra concert was a great succes at the Friends of Jazz Night at the Dauphin County Jazz and Wine Festival on Sept. 11th. We thank the Dauphin County Commissioners, and the staff at the Dauphin Co. Parks and Recreation Department for their assistance in making this a major event for us every year - we had over 1600 in atttendance at the concert! Terell Stafford will present his Quintet (Tim Warfield, Bruce Barth, Kenny Washington & Peter Washington) performing music from his new “Brotherlee Love” CD at the Pollock Center in Camp Hill on October 11th and bring his Temple University Jazz Ensemble to open the concert. We will present “An Evening of Stride and Ragtime Piano” with soloist Farid Barron at WITF Public Media Center on November 29th. These events show the diversity of music that we strive to bring to Central PA - what a great way to close out our 35th year. . Our congratulations to Annie Griggs, our 2015 CPFJ Scholarship winner. Annie is a fine woodwind player and was a member of the CPFJ Youth Band for six years. We wish her good fortune in her music education studies at Shenandoah University in Winchester, VA. . Support JAZZ the Music of Freedom! 2 Congratulations to Paul Bratcher, our new CPFJ Board President, and Mark Hunsberger, newly elected Board Member. Terell Stafford has been hailed as “one of the great players of our time, a fabulous trumpet player” by jazz Terell Stafford pianist McCoy Tyner and he brings an all-star ensemble for this concert and conducts the opening band Temple University’s Jazz Ensemble. Stafford picked up his first trumpet at thirteen initially studying classical music. He attended University of Maryland and began to immerse himself in jazz with the recordings of Clifford Brown being his main influence. In 1988, he met Wynton Marsalis who suggested he study at Rutgers University. During his time at Rutgers, Stafford joined Bobby Watson’s heralded group, Horizon. Over the next five years, Stafford was able to balance his offstage education with the knowledge and experience he gained from performing alongside Watson, co-leader Victor Lewis, and renowned keyboard artist Shirley Scott. He credits this time with teaching him to be an effective arranger, composer, and bandleader. Stafford’s time with Horizon led to his joining McCoy Tyner’s Latin All-Star Band which featured many master Latin jazz players. Since the mid-1990’s Stafford has performed with Benny Golson’s Sextet, McCoy Tyner’s Sextet, the Kenny Barron Sextet, the Jimmy Heath Big Band, and the Jon Faddis Orchestra. Currently he is a member of the GRAMMY award winning Vanguard Jazz Orchestra, as well as a member of the GRAMMY nominated Clayton Brothers Quintet. Terell played an integral part on several albums including Diana Krall’s GRAMMY nominated From this Moment On (2006). He has vast performing experience that includes bands led by Cedar Walton, Matt Wilson, and Herbie Mann. He has recorded six albums as a leader and can be heard as a sideman on over 90 albums. The head of the Jazz Department at Temple University, Terell is a recipient of Temple's “Creative Achievement Award.” He is also a clinician for the prestigious Vail Foundation in Colorado, Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Essentially Ellington Program, and serves on the board of the Jazz Education Network. On April 25, 2013, he was named Artistic Director of the newly formed Jazz Orchestra of Philadelphia. . Kenny Washington is one of the many young hard-bop revivalists to have arrived on the New York jazz scene in the late '70s and early ‘80s, and has been in particular demand by much older musicians, playing drums with such legendary veterans as Lee Konitz, Betty Carter, Johnny Griffin, Dizzy Gillespie, Clark Terry, and Tommy Flanagan. Born in Brooklyn, Washington studied with the former Dizzy Gillespie drummer Rudy Collins and attended New York's LaGuardia High School for Music & Art. A prolific freelancer, Washington has compiled an enormous discography, performing on dozens of sessions by many of jazz's most prominent figures. He has worked with Johnny Griffin, George Cables, Benny Goodman, Lionel Hampton, Sonny Stitt, Phil Woods, and Bill Charlap and currently plays with Ahmad Jamal. Kenny has a strong interest in jazz history; he's written liner notes for and/or helped prepare classic jazz re-releases by Art Blakey and Count Basie, among others. . Peter Washington (born in Los Angeles on August 28, 1964) initially played classical bass and played with the Westchester Community Symphony at the age of 14. Later he worked with electric bass and in rock bands. He went on to study English at the University of California, Berkeley. At Berkeley he became interested in jazz and began freelancing in the San Francisco Bay area. In 1986 he joined the Jazz Messengers and moved to New York City. A favorite of jazz pianists, he has worked as bassist with Tommy Flanagan, Renee Rosnes, Bill Charlap, & Benny Green, and was a founding member of the collective hard bop sextet One for All. He can be heard on Eastwood After Hours and on pianist Jon Weber's album Simple Complex. In 2008, Washington became part of The Blue Note 7, a septet formed that year in honor of the 70th anniversary of Blue Note Records. . Jazz pianist and composer Bruce Barth has been sharing his music with listeners the world over for more than two decades. In addition to traveling widely performing his own music, he has also performed with revered jazz masters (Stanley Turrentine, Tony Bennett, Freddie Hubbard & James Moody), as well as collaborated with leading musicians of his own generation ( Branford Marsalis, Lewis Nash and Terence Blanchard). His performances feature material from his large book of very powerful and imaginative original compositions, written in a voice that is both deeply personal and expressive. Bruce has performed on over one hundred recordings and movie soundtracks, including ten as a leader. He is equally at home playing solo piano (American Landscape on Satchmo Jazz Records), leading an all-star septet (East and West on MaxJazz), and composing for a variety of ensembles. His trio has recorded live at the legendary Village Vanguard in New York City, and he recently released a new DVD, Live at Café del Teatre, on Quadrant, recorded live at the Lleida Jazz Festival in Catalunia. . Tim Warfield, Jr., a native of York, PA, attended Howard University. In 1990 he began his international career as a member of trumpeter Marlon Jordan's Quintet and he has since gone on to play and record with Jimmy Smith, Stefon Harris, Nicholas Payton, Joey DeFrancesco, Shirley Scott, Christian McBride & Terrell Stafford. In1991, he placed third at the Thelonious Monk International Jazz Saxophone Competition. His recordings were twice selected as the year’s “Top Ten Jazz Releases” by the New York Times and in 1999, he was awarded "Talent Deserving Wider Recognition" in DownBeat Magazine’s 49th Annual Jazz Critic’s poll. Tim has appeared on several GRAMMY-nominated recordings and is currently an artist-in-residence at Messiah College. 4 CPFJ proudly presents “Stride & Ragtime” with pianist Farid Barron. Barron has begun a great career, playing for Wynton Marsalis, the Sun Ra Arkestra, Ralph Peterson, and Johnny Coles. He will perform a program of great American jazz piano masterpieces like Scott Joplin's "Maple Leaf Rag," Meade Lux Lewis's "Honky Tonk Train Blues," and James P. Johnson's "Carolina Shout." WITF has a beautiful concert Steinway grand and will be a wonderful venue for this performance. Tickets available in this issue of The ViBE, on our website, by calling 717-540-1010 or at the door. Relive some jazz history - come out and hear this performance! This was the thought running through my mind as I watched Freddy Cole and his band in the Gretna Playhouse Saturday night at the CPFJ Jazz Festival. Were they enraptured with the relaxed groove that they were laying down? Were they channeling Freddy’s brother Nat “King” Cole? Freddy certainly has a knack for bringing his brother’s trademarks into his own music. He has the same lilting and tasteful touch at the piano, and the same tuneful phrasing of his vocals. Backed by such greats as Bootsie Barnes, Elias Bailey, Randy Napoleon, and Jerome Jennings, Cole romped through jazz standards, blues by Sonny Boy Williamson, and even a cool swinging version of the Bill Withers classic “Lovely Day.” The packed-house audience felt the perfect vibe for the end of a perfect day in the sophisticated atmosphere of the Gretna community. Next up came the Eddie Henderson Quintet. Eddie on trumpet, Eric Alexander on Tenor, George Cables on piano, Billy Hart on drums, and Doug Weiss on bass. This band tore through a series of hard bop classics that made me think that they had somehow managed to resurrect Art Blakey and Horace Silver and work them into their swing. Eric Alexander has mondo chops and displays more than a little Coltrane influence. George Cables is one of the most harmonically sophisticated pianists I have heard in a loooong time. Billy Hart was all over the kit, keeping a cauldron of fire churning under the band. Eddie led the group through classics by Miles, Fats Waller, Herbie Hancock, as well as some of their own compositions. At the end of the night, as we walked among the softly glowing luminaries in memory of Leesa Crnogorac, for whom the concert was dedicated, I felt the continuum of time, given all of the great players of the past whose music lived on and had new life breathed into it by the fresh sounds created by these current masters of jazz. 2015 Fall Concert Series Oct 11, 2015 - 3 P.M. If it’s the Sunday of the CPFJ Jazz Festival, then that means that it’s time for a Jazz Picnic! This was the second year for the picnic at the Indian Echo Caverns in Hummelstown, and I can’t think of a more idyllic setting. As for the music, well, were Pennsylvania Hermit alive today (who lived for 20 years in the caverns without ever leaving), he would have had a tough time staying in the cave once the multiple bands started putting their grooves down. Concert goers and picnickers alike mingled in the pavilion overlooking the wooded shores of the Swatara Creek while the bands rocked the countryside. There were the Andy Roberts Quartet, the CPFJ Youth Band, The Hammond Brothers, The Marko Marcinko Latin Jazz Quintet (all the way down from Scranton), The Lower Paxton Township Variety Band, and back by popular demand - No Last Call (Harrisburg’s only hit-and-run street band). There were too many highlights to cover, but here are just a few: 1. True to form, the CPFJ Youth Band brought a great bag of standards Song for My Father, What a Wonderful World, and I Can’t Help It. 2. Paul Bratcher’s organ (in the Hammond Brothers) reminds me of Shirley Scott, and Jim Yanda reminded me of Kenny Burrell. To the best of my knowledge, Shirley Scott and Kenny Burrell never recorded together, but if they had, I would assume it would sound something like this – tasty! 3. While Marko Marcinko’s quintet laid down some SERIOUS Latin grooves on a variety of awesome tunes (Groovin’ High, The Sidewinder, Con Alma, etc), the highlight of the set for me was their version of the Wes Montgomery classic “Road Song.” It was the perfect relaxed tune for a sunny summer afternoon, and the Latin groove added a whole new dimension to the song. As the No Last Call band hit us with their unique blend of whimsical second line marching madness, I found myself already looking toward autumn and the great lineup of CPFJ concerts coming up. I will miss summer for sure, but I know that there will be lots of great music between now and the next time we crack out the red yellow honey, sassafras, and moonshine. Please contact Mr. Waters at (717) 432-3109 or via email [email protected] - all young musicians with an interest in learning to improvise are welcome. Our continuing dedication to jazz education led to the creation of the CPFJ Youth Band over 25 years ago. Mr. Waters is a professional arranger, composer and trumpet player and the band is open to all school age musicians - grade school through high school. Mr. Waters prepares arrangements to suit the particular talents of the participants each year. All applicants are accepted without audition - Mr. Waters finds a niche for every instrumentalist and vocalist. The band’s rehearsals and concerts are scheduled year round including performances at the Central PA Jazz Festival, Jazz Picnic, and many other events. Not only do the students get wonderful experience playing in an improvising ensemble, but they get to meet kids from other schools who have the same interest in jazz. This ensemble offers a different experience than most High School Jazz Ensembles - it is not a place where the students simply read the notes on the page - all members learn to improvise and get valuable experience playing jazz standards and original music in a group setting. The Youth Band is also not restricted to the traditional big band instrumentation (trumpets, trombones, saxes & rhythm section) - all instruments are welcome - we have had almost every imaginable instrument….cello, accordion, oboe, flute, etc. in past bands. The Youth Band plays all of our festivals and major events as well as many civic functions and concerts - come join the fun!!
