Martelli turned in another top-notch coaching performance in 2005-06, as the Hawks went from a 10-12 record in February to win the final five games of the regular season, and three straight in the conference tournament, to reach the Atlantic 10 championship for the second year in a row, falling just one point short of the title. The Hawks were rewarded with their sixth consecutive postseason bid, but saw the season come to an end in the NIT Second Round, closing with a 19-14 mark. Martelli’s effort was similar to the previous season where he turned in perhaps a more remarkable coaching job than in 2003-04 when he was the consensus National Coach of the Year. Faced with the loss of two NBA first-round draft picks from the ‘03-04 squad that went 30-2, the 2004-05 Hawks struggled early on, but Martelli reworked the team’s style of play to guide SJU to 21 wins in the calendar year of 2005 to finish 24-12. Saint Joseph’s posted the conference’s best record (14-2) and won its fifth straight regular-season title to tie the league record. The Hawks garnered the top seed in the conference tournament for the second year in a row and reached the championship game. He was named the Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year for the second straight season and the fourth time in his career. The Hawks earned their fifth consecutive postseason bid and made an exciting six-game run in the NIT, falling on a last-second shot in the championship game. It marked the second time in his career that he guided SJU to the NIT title game. Martelli’s 11-year career record is now 223-125, but more impressively, his teams have gone 141-54 in the previous six seasons, an average of over 23 victories per year. He currently ranks third on SJU’s all-time list for coaching victories and needs just 12 to surpass Hall of Famer Jack Ramsay’s total of 234. Martelli is also fourth in winning percentage (.641) among SJU coaches. Setting the school record for wins in a season in 2004 (30), Martelli has guided SJU to 20 or more victories five times in 11 seasons. He is 114-62 in Atlantic 10 play, which is the most conference wins for any active coach in the A-10. Martelli has also been at his best when it counts the most as his 17 postseason wins (6 NCAA, 11 NIT) are the most in school history, ahead of Ramsay’s 12. Martelli ranks first among Hawk coaches with a .680 postseason winning percentage (17-8) and has taken Saint Joseph’s to the postseason in six consecutive years, and eight times in his 11 seasons. Martelli’s efforts and the success of the SJU program have been recognized on a consistent basis. In fact, he has earned a Coach of the Year award, whether it be a city, conference or regional honor, in six of his 11 seasons. In the summer of 2005, Martelli served as the head coach of the USA Men’s U21 World Championship Team, which competed at the FIBA U21 World Championship in Argentina, and earned a fifth-place finish. It was the coach's third assignment with USA Basketball. In 2003-04, Martelli guided a focused and unselfish squad that became the most compelling story in college basketball with its undefeated regular season, a numberone national ranking and number-one seed in the NCAA Tournament. Led by consensus National Player of the Year Jameer Nelson, the Hawks advanced to the Elite Eight. After 10 years as an assistant at SJU, Martelli was named the school’s 14th head coach in 1995 and is just the third non-alumnus to hold the position. Martelli burst onto the scene in his first season (1995-96) and took the squad to the NIT championship game. Prior to his arrival at SJU, Martelli spent seven years as head basketball coach at Bishop Kenrick High School. At Kenrick, he led his team to six straight Catholic League playoff appearances, a school re c o rd, and still owns the school's all-time mark for wins with 108. M a rtelli began his career as the junior varsity coach at Cardinal O'Hara High in Springfield, PA, for the 1976-77 season. He moved on the following year to become an assistant at his alma mater, where he helped guide Widener to the NCAA Division III Final Four. After that season, he accepted the head job at Kenrick. As a player, the St. Joseph’s Prep graduate was part of Wi d e n e r’s NCAA Tournament teams in both 1974-75 and 1975-76, serving as team co-captain as a senior. Martelli and his wife Judy, a former basketball player with the legendary Immaculata College teams, have three children. Philip, Jr., a 2003 SJU graduate, is an assistant basketball coach at Niagara University, Jimmy is an assistant coach at Randolph-Macon College, and Elizabeth is a sophomore attending Saint Joseph’s. Ahmad Nivins scored a career-high 20 points, with 15 of them in the second half as the Hawks maintained a double-digit lead through the final 20 minutes. Rob Ferguson added 14 points as the Hawks put their new inside game into play. Pat Calathes scored 13 and grabbed a career-high nine rebounds, as the Hawks shot 58.8 percent in the second half alone. The game was turnoverridden as SJU committed 22 while Fairfield had 16. SJU led by as many as 18 points late in the game. INSIDE INFO: SJU players might be hearing the words, “pass it inside” more than they have in the past few years, with frontcourt players Rob Ferguson and Ahmad Nivins looking to be the main scoring threats. This is a marked change from the guard-dominated teams of the last few years. Ferguson is the leading returning scorer with a 10.8 average, and scored 14 points in the season opener. Nivins was an Atlantic 10 All-Rookie selection last year, with 6.1 points, 5.0 rebounds and 1.3 blocks per game. He had a topnotch opening game with a care e r-high 20 points and nine rebounds. DOWN BUT NOT OUT: The injury bug bit the Hawks early as freshman Darrin Govens suffered a fractured hand in just 12 minutes of action in the opener. The guard broke the fourth metacarpal of his right hand and underwent surgery on Friday. His timetable for return to the court is still undetermined, but he will begin rehabilitation immediately and be evaluated on a weekly basis. NOTICING NIVINS: Ahmad Nivins lived up to the high expectations with a career-high 20 points in the win over Fairfield. The sophomore made his first five shots of the second half en route to scoring 15 points in that period. He finished with nine rebounds and made 7-of-9 shots from the field. GIVING IT AWAY: Phil Martelli was not happy with the Hawks’ 22 turnovers against Fairfield, with 13 of them coming in the second half. Point guard Jawan Carter had four turnovers and four assists, while Martelli singled out Pat Calathes for his nine turnovers. NOT-SO BRIGHT SPOTS: The Hawks’ coach was not only displeased with the amount of turnovers in the season opener but also the fact that SJU allowed Fairfield to grab 21 offensive rebounds and go to the foul line 25 times. FRESH FACES: Phil Martelli brought in another stellar recruiting class this year. Freshmen Darrin Govens, D.J. Rivera and Garrett Williamson held three of the five spots on the Pennsylvania AllState 1st Team as chosen by Associated Press. Rounding out the highly-recognized class, Jawan Carter was an All-State honoree and Delaware’s Player of the Year, while Rockwell Moody garnered Virginia Independent Schools All-State recognition. Four of the players were 1,000-point scorers in their scholastic careers- Carter (2,462); Govens (1,598), Williamson (1,349) Rivera (1,122). The four combined amassed a total of 6,531 points. SJU’s recruits also come from succesful high school programs. Carter (Tatnall School), Williamson (Lower Merion) and Moody (Bishop O’Connell) saw their teams each win state titles while Govens’ Chester squad reached the title game (vs. Lower Merion) and Rivera’s NeumannGoretti team captured the Philadelphia Catholic League title. ON THE LINE: Saint Joseph’s led the nation in free throw percentage last season (79.9 percent), but this year are without three players from that squad who shot 79 percent or better. The Hawks got off to a good start in the opener, hitting 76 percent, led by a 6-for8 effort from Pat Calathes. The Hawks do have some veterans capable of leading the way, as Calathes (89.5 percent), Rob Ferguson (84.4) and Ahmad Nivins (70.6) put up solid numbers last season. PERIMETER PLAY: The Hawks have relied on solid perimeter scoring over the past few years and a strong attack from beyond the arc. Despite a subpar effort from beyond the arc in the exhibition vs. Widener (3-for-21), the Hawks went 6-for-12 against Fairfield. Rob Ferguson led the way hitting a career-best 4-for-5. FOLLOWING IN THE FOOTSTEPS: Jawan Carter is the first freshman to start at point guard since Jameer Nelson did so in 2000-01. Carter, who hails from the same hometown as Nelson, (Chester, PA), finished his high school career at the Tatnall School as Delaware’s all-time leading scorer with 2,464 points. GUARDED OPTIMISM: The Hawks are starting two freshmen Jawan Cart e r and Garrett Wi l l i a m s o n - in the backcourt. Classmates Darrin Govens and D.J. Rivera were the first two guards off the bench, but Govens’ injury will change that rotation. CHESTER PIPELINE: Jawan Carter is not the only Hawk freshman with the Chester, PA, ties. Darrin Govens played for Chester High School and was the Class 4A Pennsylvania Player of the Year while finishing his career with 1,598 points. Carter and Govens are distant cousins and have been friends since they were children. PAT’S PLAY: The Hawks are looking for big things from 6-10 guard Pat Calathes. The junior came on strong at the end of last year, averaging 10.7 points, 5.1 rebounds and 2.4 assists in the final seven games. He had four double-figure scoring games, shot 48.2 percent (27-for-56) from the field and made 15 of 16 free throws during that span. Calathes ended the year matching his career-high of 17 points in the NIT against Hofstra. DEAN OF COACHES: Phil Martelli owns the most Atlantic 10 wins among active coaches with 114. His winning percentage in conference games (.647) is also the highest among active coaches who have been in the league for more than one season. Martelli owns the longest tenure at one school of any of the league’s coaches. Only Jim Baron of Rhode Island has been in the A-10 longer (14 years), but it’s been at two schools, St. Bonaventure and URI. YOUTH BE SERVED: Phil Martelli will put one of his youngest teams on the floor this year, with five freshmen on the squad of 14. Only three returning players - Rob Ferguson, Pat Calathes, and Ahmad Nivins- averaged double figures in minutes last season. 2006-07 SAINT JOSEPH’S BASKETBALL - PG. 4 Ferguson averaged 30.6 minutes per game, with Nivins seeing 22.7 minutes and Calathes posting just 17 per game. PRESEASON PICKS: The Hawks were picked to finish eighth in the Atlantic 10, in the preseason voting of media and coaches. In 200506, SJU finished fifth in the conference after being picked sixth in the preseason. The Hawks took that even one step better, reaching the Atlantic 10 title game and falling two points short to Xavier. Freshman Jawan Carter was named to the Preseason Atlantic 10 All-Rookie Team. LONE STAR: Artur Surov is the only senior on the Hawks’ squad. Arvydas Lidzius entered SJU the same year as Surov, but he sat out last season to concentrate on academics and is classified as a junior this year. Surov and Lidzius are the last remaining players from the 2003-04 NCAA Elite Eight team. Rob Ferguson was also here at SJU that year, but redshirted the season. SIGN HIM UP: Idris (pronounced E-driss) Hilliard signed a national letter of intent to attend Saint Joseph’s and will enroll in the University in the fall of 2007. “We are delighted to add Idris to our program. He is first, and foremost, a terrific young man with an exceptional work ethic. He has the multiple skills that lead me to believe he will have a successful career here at Saint Joseph’s,” said Martelli. Hilliard, a 6-7, 205-pound forward from Roselle, NJ, and The Hun School (Princeton, NJ), was an All-State Prep First Team selection in 2006. He averaged 17.0 points and 7.0 rebounds per game, helping his team to a 17-9 record. Hilliard, who averaged 15.0 points as a sophomore, earned 2006 All-League and All-Prep honors, while also being named the 2006 Player of the Year by the Princeton Packet. He is currently listed among the Rivals.com Top 150 players for 2007. THREE FOR ALL: SJU owns a streak of 394 straight games with at least one 3-pointer made, a string which began at the start of the 1993-94 season. The last game in which a Hawks’ team did not hit a “three” was at Southwest Missouri State on Mar. 18, 1993. NO PLACE LIKE HOME: SJU played only had nine games in Alumni Memorial Fieldhouse last season and compiled a 5-4 record. This year, the Hawks will have 11 home games on campus. Heading into this season SJU owned a 53-8 re c o rd in the Fieldhouse over the previous six years (86.8 winning percentage). During the course of 57 seasons in the Fieldhouse, the Hawks have won 80 percent of their contests, with the overall re c o rd now 306-76. HALLMARK OF SUCCESS: Entering this season, SJU had compiled a 141-54 record in the past six seasons, with six consecutive postseason berths. NEW FACES: Phil Martelli has two new faces on the bench with firstyear assistant coaches David Duda and Doug Overton. Duda served as the head coach at Martelli’s alma mater Widener for the past eight seasons, where he compiled a 143-68 record with two conference titles and three trips to the NCAA Division III To u rnament. Overton is a familiar face in Philadelphia basketball, starring at La Salle and then playing in the NBA for 11 seasons, concluding his career with the L.A. Clippers. (on Rob Ferguson and Ahmad Nivins): “I think at the end of the year, those two guys have to be in the discussion for all-league positions. That’s what I think has to happen if we’re to have success. They are both foul-prone.. and we can’t afford to have them sitting on the bench for long periods of time. The bottom line is at the end of the year, you have to be talking about two of the best 15 players in the league.” “This team has a good work attitude. They’ll do what we ask them to do. It’s a team taht will struggle to score, but a team that will certainly compete.” (after win over Fairfield) “We practice too hard to be out there fouling indiscriminately, not blocking out and turning the ball over. Nine assists, 22 turnovers, that’s bad basketball.” All-Big 5 selection, he also played for the Philadelphia 76ers and came to SJU after a year as the director of player development for that team. Former SJU standout Mark Bass is the veteran on the staff, as he is now in his eighth year with Martelli. Duda and Overton replaced Monte Ross, who is now the head coach at the University of Delaware, and Mike Rice, who is associate coach at the University of Pittsburgh. WAITING ON THE SIDELINE: Philadelphia native Tasheed Carr will sit out this season after transferring to the Hawks from Iowa State. The 6-4 guard averaged 5.8 points and 2.2 rebounds as the Cyclones’ sixth man last season, and was named to the Big 10 AllBench Team. Carr attended University City H.S., but then graduated from Mt. Zion Academy in North Carolina. Carr can practice with SJU and will have two years of eligibility left. IF YOU BUILD IT....: An expansion of Alumni Memorial Fieldhouse and a dedicated center for men's and women's basketball highlight a comprehensive plan for enhancing varsity and recreational athletics at Saint Joseph's. The total project will proceed in three phases over the next several years. Phase one will be the construction of a 2006-07 SAINT JOSEPH’S BASKETBALL - PG. 5 17,700-square foot center adjacent to the existing Fieldhouse that will house state-of-the-art facilities for men's and women's basketball. The center is to include new locker rooms, coaches' offices, meeting areas, and dedicated academic and study space. Phase two will see the relocation of at least five varsity sports and the student recreation/intramural program by 2009 to SJU's Maguire Campus (Episcopal Academy), followed by renovations to the existing Rec Center to house new athletic offices along with locker rooms and meeting space for the remaining varsity sports. A permanent practice area for men's and women's basketball will also be added to the Rec Center during phase two. Phase three is the expansion of the Fieldhouse to include a full-service concourse around the perimeter of the arena and an increase in capacity by at least 1,000 seats. It is expected that men's and women's basketball will need to play one full season off campus during the heaviest construction period, but both squads will retain access to the basketball center and new practice area. ALL IN THE FAMILY: Coaching certainly runs in the Martelli blood as the head coach’s two sons are currently working the sidelines. Oldest son Philip, Jr., a 2003 SJU graduate, is an assistant coach at Niagara University. Jimmy, a 2005 graduate of Dickinson College, is assisting at Randolph-Macon College. CRADLE OF COACHES: The Saint Joseph’s coaching connection is an impressive one. A total of seven Saint Joseph’s graduates have gone on to become head coaches in the NBA, and SJU is now tied with Illinois for second on the list of universities with alums that have served as NBA head coaches. Indiana tops the list with 11 graduates that have coached in the league. Below is the list of former Hawks who have been NBA head coaches. Then after a break for the holiday, SJU travels to Penn State on Saturday, November 25 for the first meeting with the Nittany Lions since 1991. THE HAWK The Saint Joseph’s Hawk mascot has been flapping its wings for more than a half a century, having celebrated its golden anniversary in 2005-06. One of the most famous mascots in college sports, the Hawk is best known for staying in constant motion by flapping its wings throughout every basketball game and re p resenting the Saint Joseph’s motto, “The Hawk Will Never Die”. The idea for the Hawk as a mascot was originated by Jim Brennan during the 1954-55 season. Brennan, an ex-Marine and SJU cheerleader, at first wanted to secure an actual hawk, but later switched to the costume idea. The student government raised the 120 dollars needed to buy the initial costume, which Brennan donned for three years. He made his debut as the Hawk on January 4, 1956, a 69-56 win over La Salle at the Palestra. The Hawk has not missed a men’s basketball game since that first season. In addition to the constant flapping, the Hawk is also recognized by its “flying” in figure eights around the court during timeouts. The constant motion, coupled with the scrappy play of the University’s athletic teams, helped to spawn the school’s familiar slogan “The Hawk Will Never Die!” A few years ago, ESPN used a “flap-o-meter” on the national telecast of a Saint Joseph’s game to estimate that the Hawk flaps its wings 3,500 times during a regulation game. The Hawk is unique because it is one of the few mascots in the nation that travels to every game, and the student who holds the position gains a full scholarship. The student, who is selected through an interview process during the previous spring semester, also serves as a team manager for the men’s basketball team and travels with the squad. Jim Miller is this year’s Hawk mascot, and the 30th student to wear the wings. He is a junior public administration major from Broomall, PA. ON THE AIR RADIO: Hawk games will be broadcast this year on either WNTP 990 AM or WFIL 560 AM, while some games will be heard via audio streaming only on www.sjuhawks.com (complete broadcast schedule on pg. 2). The Saint Joseph’s Sports Network team of Tom McCarthy and Joe Lunardi will provide the play-by-play and color commentary, respectively, for the fourth consecutive year. McCarthy just completed his first year as the play-by-play announcer for the New York Mets radio broadcasts, after three years with the Philadelphia Phillies. Lunardi, in his 17th year on the Hawks’ radio broadcasts, is the Assistant Vice President for Marketing at Saint Joseph’s, and is a college basketball analyst for ESPN and the resident “bracketologist”. “HAWKTALK”: Phil Martelli’s “HawkTalk” will return for its 11th season in 2006-07. The most unique coach’s television show in college basketball, it was named the “Best Coach’s Show in the Nation” by The Sporting News. Martelli’s show combines a “Tonight Show” format with unique guests and just a few basketball highlights. The show will air locally on Comcast SportsNet beginning in January. INTERNET: Information for Saint Joseph’s basketball is found at SJU’s athletic website, www.sjuhawks.com with game notes, and live in-game statistics for all Hawk home games, and selected road games. The newly redesigned site will introduce video streaming for the first time this year. Through Hawks All-Access, fans can watch and listen to every game from Alumni Memorial Fieldhouse. 2006-07 SAINT JOSEPH’S BASKETBALL - PG. 6 THE LAST TIME . . . SAINT JOSEPH’S . . .
