MESSAGE FROM YOUR PRESIDENT
O
n behalf of The Brown Club of
Fairfield County, its officers and
directors, I send a cordial welcome to
all members of the Brown University community – alumni, parents, students, and friends.
With your continued support, our Brown
Club continues to flourish. Over the last year,
we organized fourteen events that drew over
1,000 participants, including over 400 at our
ever-popular All-Ivy A Cappella Concert with
Harvard, Yale, and Princeton. We continue to
be recognized by Brown as one of the leading
and most active Brown Clubs in the world!

We are pleased to announce that President
Christina Paxson, Brown’s 19th President, will
join us in Fairfield County on Wednesday,
November 13th from 6:30-8:30pm, to visit
Brown alumni, parents, and friends in our
area. We will send out more details as soon as
they become available. To make sure you
receive information on her visit, please join
The Brown Club of Fairfield County and
provide us with your e-mail address. You can
join either by using the enclosed form, or by
visiting us online at www.alumni.brown.edu/
clubs/BrownClubofFairfieldCounty.
On September 1st, our new season begins
with a busy fall lineup, including a Greenwich
Polo Club outing, an exclusive open house at
the Discovery Museum and Planetarium in
Bridgeport, an event for alumni with young
children, a fascinating talk by Professor Jim
Head on Brown’s key role in space exploration, a relationship building event, a forum
with a Brown Admissions Officer, and a special wine tasting evening with food and a
silent auction to benefit The Brown Club of
Fairfield County Scholarship Fund.
2014 marks Brown University’s 250th
Anniversary, and we will be hosting a “birthday party” along with other Brown clubs
around the world. Stay tuned for more
details!
We will open the New Year with an opportunity to hear about exciting new research by a
member of the Brown Medical School faculty,
followed by an evening at the theater, and a
get-together with other young Ivy alums.
In the Spring, we will host a special film
screening and coordinate another event for
alumni with young children. Our popular
annual Lobster Bake returns in May, and in
June we will coordinate an evening at
“Shakespeare on the Sound.” We will conclude the year with a summer send-off party
for area students of the Class of 2018.
For more details on these events, please refer
to the calendar of events in this newsletter or
our website: www.alumni.brown.edu/
clubs/BrownClubofFairfieldCounty (or simply enter “Brown Club Fairfield” into Google,
and our website will be listed first).
All of these programs are managed by Club
volunteers and produce many benefits for the
University and the extended Brown community. In addition to building camaraderie,
inspiring dialogue, and providing entertainment, our programs support the Club’s 30+
year legacy of awarding scholarships to Brown
students from Fairfield County.
Contributions and proceeds have enabled us
to award more than $140,000 since the scholarship program began.
Our Board of Directors remains strong with
21 members representing a cross-section of
classes. This year, we added four new members, Steve Fern ’86, Erika Banks ’89, Gavril
Rosenfeld ’89, and George DuPont ’97. We
said a reluctant farewell with many thanks to
Chuck Connell ’75, Jennifer Beihl ’93 and
Katharine Ashforth '08. Chuck is stepping
aside after 20+ years of devoted service to the
Brown Club Board. He has, however, promised to stay involved with the Club. Also
leaving the Board with many thanks is
Jennifer Beihl ’93, who has served as head of
Communications and architect of our e-mail
blasts. We will miss our departing Board
members but look forward to seeing them at
our events!
The Club is dedicated to growing Brown’s
presence in Fairfield County and beyond, in
collaboration with the Brown Clubs of New
York City, Westchester County, and New
Haven County. As a Brown Cub member,
you will be notified of their activities and
receive member pricing for their events. If
you would like to become more involved in
the Brown Club, help to host an event, or be
considered for our leadership team, please
contact me or one of the other directors.
Please note that all annual memberships
expire on August 31st and are up for renewal.
We ask you to complete the enclosed membership form, including the questionnaire,
along with your e-mail address to help us save
on mailing expenses. If you wish to pay your
dues online or make a donation to the Brown
Club of Fairfield County Scholarship Fund,
please visit the Brown Club website, as
detailed above. You can also check our website to learn more about upcoming events.
We are confident you will find the Club a
great way to stay involved and connected with
the University and our extended community
of alumni.
We look forward to receiving your Brown
Club membership forms and dues, your suggestions, and your help. We hope to see you
at our reception for President Christina
Paxson on November 13th and at our other
upcoming events!
Sincerely,
Richard A. Williamson ’65,
P’03, P’15 - President
BROWN ALUMNI INTERVIEWING PROGRAM
(FORMERLY BASC)
I want to sincerely thank all of our alumni interviewer volunteers for
their great efforts to reach out to this year’s Brown applicants. Given
the large size of our applicant pool, the sprawling scope of our region,
and the shortage of alumni interviewers in certain towns, reaching
everyone often demands that our volunteers work extra hard to complete assignments.
Each year our challenge of contacting 100% of the applicant pool and
successfully interviewing every student becomes increasingly difficult
due to the ever-broader geographic distribution of the applicants.
Although we fell short of our goal for the first time in 10 years, we
were, nevertheless, one of the busiest and most successful regions, and
we would not have been able to be so successful without the dedication and perseverance of our interviewers.
The University accepted 9% of applicants to the incoming class of
2017. A total of 2,649 out of 28,919 applicants – including candidates who applied early as well as regular decision – were offered
places.
BROWN CLUB EVENTS
A special thank you is extended to the many Brown alumni who
sponsored and supported a full calendar of Brown Club events over
the last year, with the support and active participation of our Board of
Directors. We started our season in September gathering for a day of
polo matches in Greenwich, organized by Jesse Poole ’94. This was
followed by a play date for alumni with young children at the New
Canaan Nature Center, hosted by Juan Carlos Olivarez '02. The
Club then welcomed Brown Admissions Officer Dayna Niwa
Krakower who spoke about the college admissions process at The
King School in Stamford.
In November, Holly and Peter Ruhlin ’83 hosted our very popular
annual Wine Tasting Scholarship Event in Darien, accompanied by a
Silent Auction organized by Jennifer Beihl ’93. We are pleased to
report that we raised over $5,000 for our local Brown scholarship
recipient. In December, Sharon Wolfshon Karp '80, MD '83 and
Douglas Karp hosted a faculty lecture with Professor of Neuroscience
Diane Lipscombe P’15.
We then opened the New Year with a successful professional networking event in Greenwich, organized by Darcy Travlos ’84. In March,
Thano Chaltas ’87 continued a Club tradition by coordinating the

After serving as the Fairfield County BASC Area Chair for five years, I
will be turning over the assignment to Lisa Ryan-Boyle ‘87, who
served as a wonderful and dedicated Co-Chair with me last year. As
you will soon find out, we are very lucky to have her as Fairfield
County’s new Alumni Interviewing Program Chair.
If you are interested in attending or volunteering at any of the above
events, or if you are interested in becoming an alumni interviewer,
please contact Lisa at [email protected]. We would love to have
you join us.
Thank you again for the honor of serving as our region’s Area Chair.
It has been a lot of fun getting to work with all of you, and I appreciate all of the support that you have given me.
In May, we welcomed Brown History Professor Seth Rockman for a
faculty lecture, organized by Bob Lupone ’81. Continuing a longstanding Brown Club tradition, Nick Ord ’66 and Peter Ruhlin ’83
organized our ever-popular family lobsterbake, held at The Tokeneke
Club in Darien.
In June, Peggy Twitchell ’93 organized an evening with Shakespeare
on the Sound in Rowayton, featuring a private talk with the Director
of Education Emily Bryan AM ’99. And, wrapping up the Club season, Lisa Boyle ’87 hosted an August send-off party for students of
the Class of 2017 from Fairfield County at her home in Darien.
UPCOMING 2013-2014 EVENTS
Our new club membership year begins September 1st, and we are
excited to announce that we are preparing sixteen events to be held
over the next twelve months. Members of the Brown Club of
Fairfield County will be entitled to admission discounts and will also
receive event information for the New York City, Westchester
County and New Haven County Brown Clubs.

MESSAGE FROM YOUR PRESIDENT
O
n behalf of The Brown Club of
Fairfield County, its officers and
directors, I send a cordial welcome to
all members of the Brown University community – alumni, parents, students, and friends.
With your continued support, our Brown
Club continues to flourish. Over the last year,
we organized fourteen events that drew over
1,000 participants, including over 400 at our
ever-popular All-Ivy A Cappella Concert with
Harvard, Yale, and Princeton. We continue to
be recognized by Brown as one of the leading
and most active Brown Clubs in the world!

We are pleased to announce that President
Christina Paxson, Brown’s 19th President, will
join us in Fairfield County on Wednesday,
November 13th from 6:30-8:30pm, to visit
Brown alumni, parents, and friends in our
area. We will send out more details as soon as
they become available. To make sure you
receive information on her visit, please join
The Brown Club of Fairfield County and
provide us with your e-mail address. You can
join either by using the enclosed form, or by
visiting us online at www.alumni.brown.edu/
clubs/BrownClubofFairfieldCounty.
On September 1st, our new season begins
with a busy fall lineup, including a Greenwich
Polo Club outing, an exclusive open house at
the Discovery Museum and Planetarium in
Bridgeport, an event for alumni with young
children, a fascinating talk by Professor Jim
Head on Brown’s key role in space exploration, a relationship building event, a forum
with a Brown Admissions Officer, and a special wine tasting evening with food and a
silent auction to benefit The Brown Club of
Fairfield County Scholarship Fund.
2014 marks Brown University’s 250th
Anniversary, and we will be hosting a “birthday party” along with other Brown clubs
around the world. Stay tuned for more
details!
We will open the New Year with an opportunity to hear about exciting new research by a
member of the Brown Medical School faculty,
followed by an evening at the theater, and a
get-together with other young Ivy alums.
In the Spring, we will host a special film
screening and coordinate another event for
alumni with young children. Our popular
annual Lobster Bake returns in May, and in
June we will coordinate an evening at
“Shakespeare on the Sound.” We will conclude the year with a summer send-off party
for area students of the Class of 2018.
For more details on these events, please refer
to the calendar of events in this newsletter or
our website: www.alumni.brown.edu/
clubs/BrownClubofFairfieldCounty (or simply enter “Brown Club Fairfield” into Google,
and our website will be listed first).
All of these programs are managed by Club
volunteers and produce many benefits for the
University and the extended Brown community. In addition to building camaraderie,
inspiring dialogue, and providing entertainment, our programs support the Club’s 30+
year legacy of awarding scholarships to Brown
students from Fairfield County.
Contributions and proceeds have enabled us
to award more than $140,000 since the scholarship program began.
Our Board of Directors remains strong with
21 members representing a cross-section of
classes. This year, we added four new members, Steve Fern ’86, Erika Banks ’89, Gavril
Rosenfeld ’89, and George DuPont ’97. We
said a reluctant farewell with many thanks to
Chuck Connell ’75, Jennifer Beihl ’93 and
Katharine Ashforth '08. Chuck is stepping
aside after 20+ years of devoted service to the
Brown Club Board. He has, however, promised to stay involved with the Club. Also
leaving the Board with many thanks is
Jennifer Beihl ’93, who has served as head of
Communications and architect of our e-mail
blasts. We will miss our departing Board
members but look forward to seeing them at
our events!
The Club is dedicated to growing Brown’s
presence in Fairfield County and beyond, in
collaboration with the Brown Clubs of New
York City, Westchester County, and New
Haven County. As a Brown Cub member,
you will be notified of their activities and
receive member pricing for their events. If
you would like to become more involved in
the Brown Club, help to host an event, or be
considered for our leadership team, please
contact me or one of the other directors.
Please note that all annual memberships
expire on August 31st and are up for renewal.
We ask you to complete the enclosed membership form, including the questionnaire,
along with your e-mail address to help us save
on mailing expenses. If you wish to pay your
dues online or make a donation to the Brown
Club of Fairfield County Scholarship Fund,
please visit the Brown Club website, as
detailed above. You can also check our website to learn more about upcoming events.
We are confident you will find the Club a
great way to stay involved and connected with
the University and our extended community
of alumni.
We look forward to receiving your Brown
Club membership forms and dues, your suggestions, and your help. We hope to see you
at our reception for President Christina
Paxson on November 13th and at our other
upcoming events!
Sincerely,
Richard A. Williamson ’65,
P’03, P’15 - President
