THE PARSONS CENTER FOR HEALTH AND WELLNESS
The Parsons Center for Health and Wellness, the new home of Southwest Center for HIV/AIDS,
McDowell Healthcare Center (operated by Maricopa Integrated Health System) and Avella Specialty
Pharmacy, officially dedicated its new downtown Phoenix healthcare Center to the public with “The
Big Reveal” ribbon cutting ceremony held on Friday, November 1, 2013 at 3:00 p.m.
Conveniently located on the light rail, the Center provides a one-stop location for HIV/AIDS
prevention, testing, education, behavioral health, wellness, nutrition, dentistry and primary health
care services including a specialty pharmacy, vitamin shop, and community spaces.
Bob and Renee Parsons, who generously donated more than $7 million toward the project, along
with Mayor Greg Stanton and Councilman Tom Simplot welcomed everyone to the new Center.
In addition to millions in private donations, the project was made possible by a $3.6 million City of
Phoenix Bond funded by the 2006 bond election approved by Phoenix voters.

BOARD OF DIRECTORS
2013 marked a significant milestone for Southwest
Center for HIV/AIDS as we celebrated the move
to our new home – the Parsons Center for Health
and Wellness. This center allows us to advance our
dream of providing a model of comprehensive, integrated HIV care in downtown Phoenix. Together
with our co-located partners, the Maricopa Integrated Health System’s McDowell Healthcare Center and Avella Specialty Pharmacy, we are making
this dream a reality.
This year also saw the continuation of our many
critical prevention, health and wellness and clinical trials programs, along with the launch of new
efforts, including our innovative Integrated Collaborative Model and two evidence-based HIV prevention interventions.
None of these achievements would be possible
without the support of our community. We are
especially grateful to the many supporters who
made our new home possible, including the City
of Phoenix and Phoenix voters who made bond
funding available; dozens of local foundations and
businesses; numerous individuals; and our very
generous donors, Bob and Renee Parsons and The
Bob & Renee Parsons Foundation. We hope you
will join us as we continue our important work in
the fightagainst HIV/AIDS.

Southwest
Center’s long-time client
and former volunteer, Lucio,
has been working towards
becoming
a
permanent
resident of the United States
and has not been able to
travel to see his family in
Brazil that entire time.
In December 2013, he came
in to update his agency
paperwork. He wanted to
change his answer from
“No” to “Yes” when asked
if he was a legal resident,
because he finally received
his
Permanent
Resident
Card. “I have been waiting
15 years for this permit, said
Lucio. “This is my turn in my
life to do great things.”
to share the great news with
the Southwest Center staff.
He went to the airport and
was on stand-by for a flight
to Brazil to see his father and
ailing mother. He has three
years to go before he can
apply for US citizenship, but
he can now travel without
the fear of being denied
entry into the country he
calls home.
“The trip was great and
wonderful, exclaimed an
excited Lucio. “ I was able to
see my parents for the first
time in a long time!”
He was so excited and a
little emotional and wanted

Early identification of HIV empowers
individuals to take action that benefits their
own health and the community. To this end,
Southwest Center performed 2,020 HIV
tests in 2013. The agency’s high 1.8 percent
positivity rate means Southwest Center is
successfully reaching high-risk populations.

Clinical Trials
In 2013, Southwest Center and forty-eight Phoenix community patients helped get national FDA approval of Fulyzaq which assists people
with HIV/AIDS on anti-retroviral therapy who experience non-infectious diarrhea. In addition, Southwest Center participated in a 385 client
dual HIV and Syphilis rapid, point-of-care testing trial.
These medical advancements happen because HIV clients volunteer their time to test new medications and devices. Southwest Center is
proud to be a part of the continual movement to end the spread of HIV and find a cure for AIDS. As part of this movement, an investment
was made to add a second Principal Investigator to grow our research portfolio.
Youth & Family
Camp Incredible
Camp Incredible allowed families living with HIV and AIDS to
reconnect and strengthen the family unit in a stigma-free environment. Ninety campers spent a week learning new ways
