notes
Although at times putting this guide together feels like hearding
cats — collecting data and confirming dates, making changes as
calendars evolve and events move around, incorporating newly
discovered first-time races and adding last minute ones — it makes
for a juggling act that is quite rewarding when it finally all comes
together and goes to press.
Joe Zauner and I started the NW Race Guide 13 years ago and
to this day, despite the workload, I still like this booklet because it is
all-inclusive; it covers British Columbia, Washington, Oregon, Idaho
and a good chunk of Montana. It features sanctioned and unsanctioned road, mountain, track and cyclocross events. It is a one of a
kind publication, and I’m proud of it.
Each edition brings its own flavor. The gravel grinder trend is rising steadily and enduros are popping everywhere. The popularity of
cyclocloss continues to expand with the addition of women’s specific
events and four international
races to the offering.
The development and
growth of the sport is following a healthy path too.
Thirtheen years ago, only a
few people put their energy
into young riders, but now all
state/provincial organizations
are paying attention to the next generations of racers. Many clubs
and individuals have joined the effort and more kids than ever are
being introduced to the sport. This is quite exciting.
Last year we introduced 21 talented Junior riders who represent
the future of the sport. In this edition, we are featuring 22 young
athletes who already have claimed their share of state and national
titles in various disciplines. The Northwest is bursting with so much
potential; it will be filling up pages for years to come.
So a big thank you to the organizers for putting on races and to
the coaches, clubs and associations for developing programs and
supporting riders as well as the officials for their invaluable contribution. It takes a village to raise a child, and the cycling community is
a good place to be for any kid.
Happy riding

Over the years, the Northwest has seen a considerable number of its racers make it to the “big
league.” Many have joined the pro ranks and the region also counts its fair share of Olympians, World
and National Champions. Their performances have inspired many who have the same dreams. For
the second year, we have elected to use the race guide to feature some of those young talented and
promising riders.

Who is your cycling idol and why? Fabian Cancellara. He is one of the most successful time trialists of all
time, which shows dedication, determination, and focus. He is also a highly respected member of the peloton

How did you get started in cycling? I got my first road bike when I was 11 years old. I was the only girl on
the Ketchum team, with 10 boys ages 15-18. At 12, I won my first state championship. At my first time trial,
my bike handling skills were so poor, I had to dismount and walk around the cone to make the mid-point turn
around. I got dead last. At 13, I went to the USA Cycling National Championships. I watched the other racers
in my age group with their snazzy bike kits blaze down the TT start ramp. I had never been on a start ramp.
I lost 4 minutes in a race that lasted 25 minutes. At the podium ceremony, the announcer said, “Stars and
Stripes dreams come true for Zoe Frazier!” I looked at my dad, and said, “Next year, dad. I’m going to win this.”
