Jewellery
I found immediate rapport with
the instructors and the students.
We offer a variety of jewellery workshops in our
fabulous Campbell River studio and add new ones
throughout the year.
Email Julia at [email protected] to get on the Metal
Jewellery email list and get updates on workshops and
related upcoming events.
We all bonded readily, each with different
backgrounds, of different ages and different
strengths and challenges. We approached each
other with respect
and friendship as
we developed our
skills. Each day was
fully engaging and
the learning was
continuous. The
instructors were
equally unique and
each gave all to
meet our learning
needs and inspire
us to meet the
challenges in our own way. The program was all
it said it would be and the year flew by. I not only
gained skills which have prepared me to keep
going in my own direction should I so choose, I
can also be part of a widespread and interesting
community of jewellery artisans and craftspeople.”

Kurt Tunkl
Kurt volunteered for
the Central Island Arts
Alliance in Courtenay
[now CVAG] as Gallery
& Gift Shop Manager
from 1978 to 1981. Since
the board allowed him
to set up a small studio
in the gift shop, he took
the opportunity to learn
about the trades of silver and goldsmithing. Then,
after two semesters as a student at the Alberta
College of Art & Design (ACAD) in the Jewellery &
Metalsmithing department, he was offered the
position of Educational Technician. During his 29
years of teaching at ACAD, he spent several summers
studying refractory metals [anodizing of titanium
and niobium] at the California College of Art &
Design. Kurt is trained in all aspects of jewellery
production technology including laser welding and
3-D prototyping techniques. His main focus is still
refractory metals and he continues to produce
jewellery and sculpture size pieces. He teaches in the
Metal Jewellery Design Certificate at NIC and also
helps maintain the studio and its equipment.
Learn an ancient form of open-backed wirework still
used in many cultures world-wide. Many contemporary
craftspersons have created non-traditional pieces of
filigree taking advantage of its continued popularity.
Students will saw, solder, file, manipulate wire and

create earwires, and generally advance their skill level.
This class is all about exploring this ancient technique
but applying a contemporary twist. The results will
be amazing! Some experience in jewellery making is
recommended. Instructor: Cheryl Jacobs

geography and how they were corrected with further

Amy Dugas
Amy discovered weaving in 2010 while living in a
remote cabin in the Strathcona mountains. She
taught herself to weave using natural materials
in the forest and nearby beaches, and then took
some lessons to hone her skills. As a keen sea
kayaker, Amy spends lots of time on the water
exploring remote beaches and secluded islands
on the Pacific coast. Beachcombing was always a
hobby of hers, and finally she can justify picking
up random treasures to incorporate into her
baskets; interesting driftwood shapes, curls of
bark, sunbleached bones, colourful old rope… She
sells baskets worldwide through her Etsy online
store and is a former member of the guild of
basket makers. Amy’s mission is to try to bring as
much of the wild outdoors that she calls home to
the homes of others.

The Fall 2015 Lecture Series, Inheritance to Intuition:
Seven Contemporary Northwest Coast First Nations
Artists, will be held on Saturday mornings, September
26 to November 28. The first lecture will be given by
Carol Sheehan. She will introduce the series with a brief
history of ideas in the rapidly evolving contemporary
Northwest Coast art scene. The seven following lectures
will be presented by distinguished First Nations artists
whose careers, while firmly rooted in the traditions of
their ancestors, have evolved into unique individual
expressions of their cultures. With homage to the legacy
of inherited cultural identities, the works of these
master artists intuitively express continuity with the
past and connection to present cultural realities.
NIC offers Introductory Philosophy: Knowledge and Reality
Analyze select problems in the philosophy of religion, metaphysics
and epistemology, including the existence of God; personal identity
and morality; and the justification of scientific beliefs.

Landscape Horticulture Apprenticeship - Level 1
Enriched (LHA-100)
34
This apprenticeship program is designed for those currently
working and those planning to work in landscaping.
Potential employers include landscape companies,
municipal parks, golf courses, garden centres, nurseries,
and horticulture-related businesses. Study part time during
the evening and weekends, allowing you to further your
education while maintaining employment. Please note
that no work experience in landscaping is required to apply
to this program. An apprenticeship is a combination of
on-the-job training and classroom learning that leads
to a trade credential – or “ticket”. An apprenticeship is
established when an employer agrees to sponsor an
employee, and both employer and employee register
with the Industry Training Authority (ITA). If you are
already working in the field, you and your employer
can register with the ITA to get your ID# and start
tracking your work hours. Those who do not already
have an employer or experience in the industry may use
HortEducation BC as their sponsor for this first level of
training.

An apprenticeship is established when an employer and
employee complete, sign and register an apprentice and
sponsor registration form with the Industry Training
Authority (ITA). The ITA program outline has been
developed and approved by the horticulture industry
and North Island College has enriched the curriculum
with additional topics on landscape maintenance and
design, putting you a step ahead with extra skills that
are attractive to employers. This program prepares you
to take the ITA Level 2 exam towards the Landscape

Zachary’s passion for gardening started off in his parent’s garden. Full of fruits,
vegetables, and ornamental trees and shrubs, the relaxing nature of the garden and
gardening drew him in. While attending UVic, Zac took every available plant course. He
learned a lot about plant anatomy and physiology, and acquired his degree in biology.
Next, Zac attended a Malaspina College Horticulture Diploma program where he
learned about growing, landscape design and plant identification. Zachary started his
career at the Art Knapp location in Vernon as a carry-out boy. At the end of his 7 year
tenure there, he was the Nursery Manager. He then made the wise decision to move
to the Comox Valley, transferring to the Art Knapp here. Zac has continued as Nursery
Manager at this location for the last 5 years. He loves that horticulture is a continually
evolving career with endless opportunities to learn and advance.
