Not only is it a fun way to stay fit but you can have fun with your friends while doing it. Yoga is a discipline of both the body and the mind. The word is often associated with the traditions of yoga in Buddhism and Hinduism. Yo g a e m p h a s i z e s breathing as a main focus for relaxation. Restorative yoga focuses solely on relaxation, though, and emphasizes breathing that creates calm and serene states of being. Among other reasons, people do yoga because of the tremendous physical and mental benefits it brings them in the precise areas they struggle in. The main idea is that yoga aids us in finding balance in every aspect of our lives; we’re not supposed to arrive in yoga class as an expert already. We’re supposed to show up ready to take a journey of transformation, whatever that may be. Yoga provides a men- tal and physical challenge that helps the overall wellness of a person. The skills that are learned through yoga practice can support us in the rest of our lives, helping us manage stressful times with clarity and balance. There are many different types of yoga. Deciding which one is best for you is just a process of trying them out for yourself. Hot Yoga is a series of yoga poses done in a heated room. The room is usually maintained at a temperature of 95-100 degrees. As you can imagine, a vigorous yoga session at this temperature promotes profuse sweating which rids the body of toxins. It also makes the body very warm, and therefore more flexible. Hatha is a very general term that can encompass many of the physical types of yoga. If a class is described as Hatha style, it is probably going to be slow-paced and gentle and provide a good introduction to the basic yoga poses. Vi n y a s a , w h i c h m e a n s breath-synchronized movement, tends to be a more vigorous style based on the performance of a series of poses called Sun Salutations, in which movement is matched to the breath Ashtanga, which means “eight limbs” in Sanskrit, is a fast-paced, intense style of yoga. A set series of poses is performed, always i n t h e s a m e o r d e r. Ashtanga practice is very physically demanding because of the constant movement from one pose to the next. In yoga terminology, this movement is called flow. Yoga is a fantastic way to get in shape and have fun with your friends at the same time, not only do you reap physical benefits from taking a yoga class but, you might also begin to see the positivity and joy yoga brings, present in your daily life. 4 2009 N O V E M B E R Boys Baseball SPORTS UPDATES ON OUR FELLOW Girls Softball MONTHLY SM TEAMS Girls & Girls Swim Boys & Girls Track Boys Golf Boys Tennis Hunter Warkentien Photo Courtesy of smhs.org. Boys’ Baseball Hits Out of the Park By Dean Navarro In previous years, Coach Jondle has brought varsity baseball teams to success. The 2009 spring season is expected to be one of the best teams that Coach Jondle has produced here at Santa Margarita Catholic High School. There has been a new addition to this year’s baseball staff with the update of two new freshman coaches. Coaches Holt and McCarthy have been the freshman baseball coaches for quite some time but were over due and replaced. The new coaches Ford and Punto are strongly welcomed and will help the players grow to the JV and varsity level. The varsity team consists of twenty players and more than half of them are seniors. Seven of last years starters are returning which will make it tough for this year’s players to find a starting position. Their first league game against Servite was a complete domination of 7 to 3. Saturday, March 21st kicked off the season and we put Servite to shame. Some leaders of the game were Trayce Thompson, Robert Kelly, Cody Webster and Blake Leyva. Trayce’s home run secured our lead to help start off league in a great Boys’ Lacrosse is Victorious way. Expectations for this season from the players and staff are to win league and take it as far as possible. When I asked Blake how this year’s team is so much different from previous years, he explained that “we all play together as a team and our hitting will carry us far.” Coach Jondle has helped many baseball athletes get into the collegiate level and this year some players are going big. Trayce Thompson has previously committed to UCLA on scholarship and is a strong force in the outfield. Blake Leyva has always been a threat on the field and this year he will dominate some great teams. He will help us this year but next year play at Santa Clara. Stephan Olsen is going to Columbia University on scholarship for his pitching. Stephan is very skilled on the mound and I have heard his nickname is “the twig” and maybe this because of his tree like features on and off the field. Thomas Emanuel is on a full ride scholarship to UCI for next year. He will be among many smart and dedicated individuals from around the world. These are a few players that are playing collegiate baseball next year, but this is the year that can either make or break the rest of the non committed players. By Karenna Soto The Boys Lacrosse team is going to have an exciting season this year, growing and maturing as a team at Santa Margarita. The boys are led by Coach Chris Driggs this year. Senior Jack Cranston signed with the University of Vermont for division one Lacrosse team. Jack is the first student at Santa Margarita Catholic High School to play division one in lacrosse. Jack is leading the team with 21 goals so far this season. The Team began the season with a thrilling win against Los Alamitos! Saturday March 7th, Sophomore Reilly Higgins scored the winning goal at the buzzer. The boys are headed in the right direction with a standing of four wins and only one loss. The team has put in a great effort even though one player suffered one serious injury and a couple others; they have yet to give up. “The size of a player means nothing compared to the heart and determination of that player” states freshman Sean Cannon .Go out and Support your Boys Lacrosse team today held at Servite High School at 3:30. Girls’ Lacrosse Stays Strong By Karsyn Kraft The Girls’ Lacrosse program is in its second year at Santa Margret. The program has grown so drastically they have over fifty girls in the program. They now have both a Varsity team and a new Junior Varsity team. Varsity started out the season strong playing in the Rose Bowl tournament in Pasadena. They played three games throughout the day and won all by a landslide. The girls won the first ever Blue Division title at the tournament. The team is lead by captains Senior Cassie Mazolewski, Senior Kelsey Jerzierski, and Sophomore Madelin Williams. On Friday the 13th, the girls played Great Oaks High School in Temecula. They were victorious over the Wolf Pack 12-6. The girls traveled to Palos Verdes, the home of the Chadwick Dolphins. The lady eagles soared with decisive defense and crafty offense, winning the game 16-4. They then took on Peninsula and won 11-5 to make it three in a row. On March 23rd, the eagles had a heartbreaking loss to start league. They lost to JSerra 7-8. The team is looking solid to make a great Trinity League run so go out and support our lady eagles! Girls Softball Takes Flight By Cody Webster Softball has had a tradition of excellence; they have a large list of alumni who have gone on to be successful in different colleges around the United States. The team played in the Serra league until 2006, the team wins league or places in the top 3 and makes CIF every year. This team not only succeeds on the field but also in the classroom. The team was awarded with academic excellence when twenty players last year were placed on the honor roll, the overall GPA of the varsity team was 3.4, keep up the good work. The varsity coaching staff c o n s i s t s o f , M r. J o h n F i t z p a t r i c k , M r. M i k e Monnahan, and Mr. Robert Wiebort. Although Softball at SM does not play their first league game until March 26 th they condition in the offseason and it is required that they play for a club team to ensure they are ready for the tough Trinity League schedule. This year the team is very young and only has three returning seniors. The team has a lot of young talent and is expected to do very well this season. Third year starter, Junior, Meghan Harman said, “We lost a lot of seniors last year but I think the girls can step it up this year. We have a lot of talent so as long as we hit well and pitch well we will be the team to beat”. Words of a born leader. Their next game is today at 3:15 at Mission Viejo High school and there first home game is April 7 th against Mater Dei at 3:15. Come out and watch this talented team. 5 The Blueprint The Student Newspaper of Santa Margarita Catholic High School March 2009 OPINION Handling Overprotective Parents By Aria Bendix and Adam Enochs Everyone knows the signs. They always have to know the who, what, when, where, why, how long, and every other minor and insignificant detail about your life. When you start to drive, you call them when you leave, when you arrive, if you stop and tell them why you stopped, even if it is just to fill up the tank. If you have an overprotective parent, you know it. You’ve known it for years. We know that they worry because they love us and want to make sure we’re safe, but from a teenager’s perspective, it feels like we’re being locked up and having the key thrown away. So how can you deal with the seemingly never-ending nagging, complaining, and questioning that is driving you insane? Step One: Play their game…in the beginning. Even if it’s just a month of letting them know everything you’re doing on the weekend, at least you’ve gained their trust. Step Two: Find a scapegoat. Once your parents start trusting you more they will slowly but surely start asking you less questions. But these questions don’t just disappear. They gradually build until your parents are ready to unleash a stream of pesky inquiries. Find a scapegoat. A sibling is perfect; tattle on them (immature as it sounds) about something minor, just minor enough so that your parents don’t trust them anymore and start trusting you. Therefore, the over-protectiveness is unleashed on them. In the instance that you are an only child, a long time neighbor, family friend, or ‘bad friend’ can be used instead. Step Three: Express affection. Your parents eat it up. They loved it when you were little and they still love it now…nothing has changed. By showing them you care, they don’t think you’re distancing yourself from them and start to worry less. Step Four: NO MAJOR SCREW UPS!!! Enjoy your newfound freedom, but understand that any mistakes you make and YOUR PARENTS HEAR ABOUT will push you back to square one. Be smart, but in the instance you get caught, the steps may be repeated. But frequent repetition will make it so your parents know that you’re constantly lying, and you will be stuck with o v e r p r o t e c t i v e parents…forever. Step Five: Recognize that your parents love you…you can’t always have the mindset that they’re out to ruin your life. If you stick to the system we’ve provided for you, you may even find that your parents don’t annoy you as much as they used to. Obviously this system is for extremely overprotective parents and should be used with caution. If your parents are not overprotective, you probably don’t understand this at all, but keep in mind that there are those less fortunate who need this advice. Ultimately, we want your parents to know that they can trust you and if working the system is what it takes, those truly desperate will have no problem with it. Parents may stink sometimes, but don’t forget that they have your best interests at heart. And please…don’t let our parents see this article. Procrastination Causes Unwanted Stress By Amanda Figueroa and Carly Rivera We all procrastinate, some more than others. Think about all those times you waited until the day before to write an essay, study a day before your final, or did your math homework the period before. With all the extracurricular activities and fun we want to have in high school, it is typical for us to put things off until the very last minute. However, in doing so, we bring havoc into our lives and sometimes even into the lives of others. Of course there are a million other things we would rather be doing than homework, studying, chores, and other tedious tasks. Psychologytoday.com suggests “Procrastination is not a problem of time management or of planning. Procrastinators actively look for distractions, particularly ones that don’t take a lot of commitment on their part.” For example, procrastinators have a tendency to distract themselves as a way of regulating their emotions such as fear of failure or never having enough time to complete their assignments. If you have a lot of homework, but you are invited to a party, would you rather stay home and do your homework or get out and have a good time at the party? Most of us would rather go to the party because it serves as an excuse for not doing your homework, it does not take a lot of commitment, and it does not cause stress. In this hectic and fastpaced world we live in today, it is no surprise that much of the world’s populations are chronic procrastinators. For many, procrastination is a lifestyle that affects all areas of their lives. But there are major costs to procrastination, health being the main one. When you procrastinate, you suffer the consequences by staying up late to finish your assignments. By not getting enough sleep, your immune system becomes weaker, and you are susceptible to sickness. In addition to health problems, procrastination also has a major affect on others as it does on oneself; it shifts the weight of responsibilities onto others, who become aggravated. How frustrating is it when you have a group project, and some of the members wait until the last minute to do their part? If you are the leader of the group, you usually become stressed with the group because you do not have enough time to prepare an adequate project. Be careful because procrastination has the ability to destroy teamwork and relationships of all kinds. There is no doubt that procrastinators can change their behavior—but doing so takes a lot of mental and physical energy, as well as discipline. You have to truly want to change your life and set your mind to it using structured behavioral methods. By straightening out your main priorities, you can excel in all aspects of life and overcome procrastination. 6 The Blueprint March 2009 The Student Newspaper of Santa Margarita Catholic High School Emily & Olivia The Editors Meet Jesse McCartney! By Emily McCartney and Olivia Staffon Monday, March 9, 2009 was a night to remember. Media passes, body language, a conversation with a VIP, and a 45 minute wait for chicken fingers were all components of this epic night. We got free tickets, meet and greet, and media passes through a company who we advertise for in our newspaper for none other than JESSE MCCARTNEY. It started with the special line for the meet and greet and then discovery of the “media” passes. With these green tickets, we were able to be one of the last people to take a picture with “the boyfriend” Photo courtesy of Olivia Staffon. of Emily and Olivia. They also allowed us to ask him questions for our school paper. After 20 long minutes of waiting in line to see him, we walked in the room and saw his beautiful soul. The security guards said “one click per person, one question per group”. None of the 6 other people in the room could decide who was going to see Jesse first, and he said “Come on guys, I’m getting cold over her all alone”. I, Olivia, promptly said “I’ll keep you warm” and received a finger wag from the security guard. So I, Emily, walk up to take my picture and said “Guess what, my last name is McCartney”. Jesse said “Oh really that’s cool” and I proceeded to say “Yeah. Like no really it is I can show you my ID if you want”. But he looked creeped out and said “No…really I believe you”. So awkward. Then I, Olivia, took my picture and couldn’t utter any words. We had been pondering about our one question for a good while, and chose to ask him “so who’s the girl you sing about in all you songs? Olivia and Emily right?” And yes, we actually said that last part. Jesse responded with “Naww there hasn’t been any Olivia’s or Emily’s. But I sing about a lot of different girls there isn’t just one. I’ve been in and out of relationships for the past couple of years, so most of the time it’s just about those”. We then asked him if he would dedicate a song to us, and he said “I don’t know you have to stick around and find out”. So we did. Foolishly, the House of Blues wouldn’t let us bring our cameras into the actual concert area, so we had to walk all the way back to the car in heels, well, Emily’s heels only. This was a blessing in disguise because on the way to the car we saw a man even more beautiful than Jesse in a parked car on the side of the road. Tyler Hilton. He totally noticed us and looked up and we had a glorious 3 seconds of h.c.e.c (hardcore eye contact). On the way back to the concert from the car, we wanted to creepily knock on his window, but were turned away by the fact that he was mackin’ with his gf. So we de- cided to turn our attention back to JMac, or so he calls himself. Good choice. We got into the concert area when the screeching of the first act was ending, and after some chicken fingers (or possibly buffalo wings, we’re still not sure) and awkward small talk with some “friends” nearby, Jesse came on. He came out with some sexy stunna shades and a chill suit. Jesse was lookin’ good and singin’ good. The songs that were not necessarily our favorites on the c.d. on the drive up were actually some of our favorites because he performed them well. He had a sort of Justin Timberlake-like vibe goin’ on and definitely knew how to get the crowd excited. The crowd was surprisingly not all little girls under the age of 14, but actually a mix of girls and a few boys of ages up to about 25. Jesse’s songs got us dancing and singing along to his songs and being that typical concertee that raises their hand highest when he calls for someone Then I look up to the room adjacent to the bathroom only to find my dog looking straight back at me. If he could talk we would have shared a pretty thrilling conversation and a “What the cow is eating the dog food?” questionnaire. Wi t h t h e c o u r a g e I have, I sneak half way down the stairs. I stay half way because I did not want to underestimate the speed this little demon thing may possess. The view from the stairs does not give me a clear view into the laundry room, so I decided to swing off the side of the banister to get a good look. While swinging I catch a glimpse of this huge hairy black and white raccoon. It’s eyes latch onto mine as it has a little dog food caught onto his upper hairy lip. I make a loud noise as I try to jump back onto the stairs to protect my dog from this inhumane creature. And just as I make it back to the stairs I hear the little flap of the doggy door, notifying me the mad, fat raccoon had left. It was a pretty exciting evening, not many people can say they have had a stare down with a raccoon. Just thought I’d share the thrill of that Photo courtesy of Emily McCartney. from the audience. He was very charismatic on stage when he talked to the crowd between songs and seemed a lot more outgoing onstage than he did when we met him. So, Jesse didn’t end up dedicating a song to us, but we had a really good time at the concert because he was a very entertaining performer! Go see him this summer at the House of Blues! There’s a Rascal in my Laundry Room! By Michelle Loftus So these past few weeks at the household have been a little shaky cakey. It all started when my sister riskingly asked my mother to take care of her new pet Beta Fish. Quick little background: mom hates all animals everywhere, big or small, swimming or walking. Soo as the first week goes by, everything is fine. Mom casually misses feeding the fish a few times during the week, yet the fish is still alive and growing strong. The fish is inhabiting our laundry room accompanied by my pet Maltese’s doggy door and his food and water bowl. T h e n o n e Tu e s d a y night, my parents hear some ruckus outside; thinking it was “only” my pet pup, they go back to sleep. The next morning my mother enters the laundry room. At this point she claims to have “gotten attached to the fish”ya right- she stands there in awe as little black paw prints stain her entire laundry room. She looks to the dogs food bowl- gone. She looks to the dogs water bowlgone. She looks to the actual bag of dog food-paw print gash in it. She looks to S i g g y ’s ( t h a t ’s t h e B e t a F i s h ) GONNNNNNNNNNNNNNNE. She appears to have a tear coming down her face. Yet, then she notices there is no water that is spilled from the oddly shaped fish bowl. Whatever creature murdered and ate the fish must have been talented enough to sip down the fish, just like drinking water from a cup. Weird? Creepy? YES. So we tell my sister about the sad death of her fish, I laugh hysterically as all this commotion is going on. Yet this bites me in the butt as the coming Saturday I am home alone. I am upstairs getting ready for whatever the night might bring and can hear my little pup munching on his food. I think to myself, “hmm he’s chomping down on his food, it’s rather loud for such a small dog” - but whatever. story with all of you. Shut your doggy doors at night unless you want a furry friend to sneak into your bed and maybe eat you. Yeah, you try having a stare down with a creature like this. I decided to help those kids out. Many people feel that looks are the reason they don’t get the ladies; they couldn’t be further from the truth. Girls like the guy who is very confident, who cleans up well, and who knows how to charm them. A good pick-up line can get any guy almost any girl they want, and a bad one can give you a restraining order. In this article, I will guide you through the good pick up lines, the bad pick up lines, and the just plain wrong ones so you can be on your way to success with the opposite sex. A good pick up line not only has to do with what you say, but how you say it. The key of this is to be confident, but not cocky. It is hard for a high school student to be confident, but it is essential. A way to build your confidence up is just to think about how much better looking you are than that one guy with all the zits and doesn’t wash himself more than once a week. If you are this kid I speak of, no problem, a brown paper bag over the head and old spice does wonders. Once you build your confidence up its time for the right things to say. From the past I have learned “fake it until you make it” is the best way to get the girl. Saying something like, “You know the only girl in this world for me”, always helps a girl feel that they are special and that you really do like them even if you truly don’t. Another great one you can use is “Hey, guess what I’m doing Saturday; I’m going to the movies with you”. This one is good because it Mr. Craig Debusk and his wife had a baby girl on 3/23/09! The tongue is the fastest healing part of thebody. No word in the English language rhymes with month. You Work Here?... someone has given you while giving them a detention? “I didn’t know.” 9. Do you like giving them? No, I’d rather just get to know the students and help them solve problems. 10.What was your job before being a dean? Since 1972, I have been an Olympic motivational speaker and I was also a substitute teacher for 1 year and a kindergarten teacher for 3 years. 11.What’s the best memory you have at SM so far? I thought the Thanksgiving and Christmas assemblies were incredible. Every time I work with a student and his or her family, I feel rewarded. The worst thing a guy can do is be nervous. Girls are like tigers, they can smell the fear. Girls want a guy who can defend them, even though they can defend themselves. I am also not telling you to be sexist and try to act like the typical “Macho Man”. This is the 21st century, girls can do everything a man can do, if not more. Most guys are misled and feel that they need to be the “Bad Boy” to get a girl. Sure, some of these guys get the girl, but the mass majority of them go home alone at the end of the day. You always have to respect a woman; no matter what you feel is right you need to respect their boundaries. Sure, there are a lot of good ways to get girls, but each girl is different and they like different things. The best advice I can give you is in the end of the day you just need to be yourself and you will you find the girl that you can truly tell you love. THE BLUEPRINT By Lauren Hundley and Noelle Sumner Meet Mrs. Dana Reyes, the newest addition to the dean’s office. 1. How long have you been working here? I started here in mid October of this year. 3. Are you and the other deans close? Yes, we work together as a team. 4. Are you married? If so for how long? Yes, for 29 years. We both were attending UCLA, he played football and I was a song girl, and our first kiss was after we won the Rose Bowl. It was UCLA vs. Ohio State. 5. What’s your favorite thing about SM? My favorite thing is the students and I have enjoyed getting to know them. 6. What’s more annoying to give a detention for... girls with short skirts or guys that don’t shave their face? My biggest challenge is giving girls with short skirts detentions because I like giving them second chances. 7. What was the longest it took someone to finish their drug test? 20 minutes. 8. What is the lamest excuse shows that you are so confident that she is going to say yes that you aren’t even asking, you are pretty much telling her. She will have no choice but to go out with you, this theory is flawless. Of course, there are some pick-up lines that you need to be sure to stay clear of. The worst thing a guy can do to a woman is belittle her by calling her “babe”. Most girls feel that this is a stereotype and it makes them feel like you see them as a baby, someone who whines, is cranky, and can’t take of themself. Another thing that is not good to do is say “Hey Beautiful”. This and many other corny lines are more over used than “like” and “um”. But, the absolute worst line a guy can say is “HUBBA HUBBA”. When you say this you are telling the girl that you don’t care about them and you don’t want anything more than sexual activities. I’m Picking Up on More than Weather Patterns By Ross Kingsley and Clark Taylor For as long as we have all been here, Southern California has been known as a place of beautiful things: beaches, sunsets, cars, and especially women. It does not matter if you are walking around on the beach or at the mall; you are eventually bound to see at least one lovely lady. However, after doing some intense studies, including many hours of people watching and traveling to the ends of Southern California, we simply could not find any of these ladies. As Clark and I sat there puzzled as to what to do, we came up with one conclusion, “We are in the right place, but we are not in the right season”. We figured out that it is far too cold and the tempo far too slow for the majority of the beautiful women to be out right now. It’s like the weather: the more active/ warm the weather, the more amounts of women are on the move. It’s also like an atom, the warmer it is, the faster and more active the particles are. Anyway, you get the point. However, we did also find out where they are going to be hanging out. It all depends on the age. The Nordstrom/ Make-Up/Shoe Department is where the younger crowd will hang or even work. We even interviewed one working in the Nordstrom shoe department. Ana, a makeup artist at the counter was extremely beautiful and said that you could find her on Friday at the movie theaters, “On movie night.” On the other hand, the Macy’s and the side of the mall is where the still young and beautiful will hang. Of course this is just for the Mission Viejo Mall. The beach, Fashion Island, The Spectrum, and the local popular restaurants are also very trendy areas. There is one exception to our theory however. The only time to find them in the colder months is in December. This is when they are out shopping for loved ones or just shopping for the sake of shopping. Regardless of the month or where you are, let us all remember that all women, both older and younger, are beautiful on both the inside and the out (except for sometimes). If you are looking for a certain crowd though, then put in the man hours and take the time to figure it out. Yo u m a y h a v e t o g o shopping with your best friend one day or be seen walking side by side with that friend in an Abercrombie and Fitch (we tried it and it was something else). But, with the right amount of patience and determination, you too will be able to see some of the beauty that exists in this great Southern California region. It was the brief insight to the lives of the unfortunate in India that many were completely unaware of. The motion picture was incredibly captivating due to the director taking an uncommon approach of portraying the story through a series of game show questions. The main c h a r a c t e r, J a m a l M a l i k (played by Dev Patel), was in illiterate Slum who wound up on as a contestant on the show, ‘Who Wants to be a Millionaire.’ He bewildered the audience by being able to answer every difficult question given to him. When accused of cheating with in the game show he was convicted and questioned by officers. The series of questions the officer asks is what brings back each memory of Jamal’s childhood. The movie offers a variety of tearful heartbreak to joyful laughter throughout the plot. The director of the film, Danny Boyle, has audi- ences across the world experiencing the realism of the story through Jamal’s eyes. The flashbacks that Jamal explain what exactly he overcame in his life. From watching his mother die, to loosing his older, once dignified brother to the evils of the mafia, Patel’s character portrays what many people of the Slum are going through every day. Slumdog Millionaire was adapted from the novel ered that ten percent of the people’s brain capacity to restore information was lessened. As people continue to recognize that their memory is decreasing, more and more technology is becoming available that is specialized in improving memory. The Nintendo DS video game, “Brain Age,” claims that a player’s memory can be improved in just a number of days. Although there hasn’t been data to prove these claims, these videos encourage kids to stimulate their brain waves in a fun and interactive way. People can look at technology as a way to keep their life on track, but people should realize that each time we input a new event or alarm, our ability to remember decreases. As Weldon said, “Details are locked into our memories when we pay careful attention to them.” To change researchers’ idea t h a t o u r g e n e r a t i o n ’s memory is weak, we can do simple tasks to prove them wrong. Instead of setting alarms, we can write our tasks down. Writing things down makes it easier for our brain to remember what we have to do for the day. My constant life struggle is being forgetful. However with all the Vikas Swarup. The amazing ability to change from the present to past in the movie is what explains why it won best picture in the Oscars. Also pulling in with best director, Danny Bolye is one happy director. Many people have a different set of feelings toward India now that the movie has become so successful. It took the country to a different platform and was a great accomplishment for the Indian film industry. CanTechnology Really Improve a Person’s Memory? By Elizabeth Pinner With all the technology available, it is almost impossible to forget anything. If you are a person who constantly needs reminders, you can use the alarms on your phone to remind you of appointments or homework assignments. If you are a person who gets lost easily, you can use your car’s navigation system as your own MapQuest. It is even almost unnecessary to remember your friend’s number when you have your phone or “own personal phonebook” in your pocket. So how is the memory of our technology-frenzied generation affected? Although technology is available in order to save us from the heavy load of remembering details, it also adds to our troubles. Everyday we are accountable for recalling teacher’s emails, Facebook passwords, and the security lock on our phones. The fact is that all these long digits and random letter combinations are meaningless and tedious, and in result is more difficult for our brains to absorb. In the article, Can Technology Improve Your Memory?, citizen journalist Laura Weldon states that our generation’s memory is indeed being weakened. Weldon explains, “technology removes some of the mental discipline that every generation before us had to practice.” The re aso n wh y o u r generation is showing evidence of failing is because people don’t have to work on learning the routes, memorizing numbers, and learning how to keep our tasks organized because electronics do that all for us. Technology affects the way we access information, but it may also have severe repercussions according to recent studies in Japan. Researchers at J a p a n ’s Hokkaido University School of Medicine studied a group of people who admitted their lives were overtaken by cell phones, laptop, and Blackberry’s. They discov- technology available today, I have found a remedy for my tendency to forget: alarms. What Would You Do? 11 The Blueprint The Student Newspaper of Santa Margarita Catholic High School March 2009 CAMPUS MINIS RY “Let Us Welcome All” By Lauren Meech, Kristen Pons, and Ashley Kotero Monday, March 9th was the start of anti-bullying week at Santa Margarita. It was a time of reflection for our student body. It was a great time to stop and realize how we have been treating others and determine if that is the way we wish to be treated. The theme was “loving each other in our differences”. All around school, posters were hung with the phrase “Omnes Recipiamus” which translates as “Let us Welcome All”. On Wednesday, March 11th there was an assembly in the gym for the organization “Rachel’s Challenge”. This organization is meant to inspire young people to follow Rachel Scott’s example. She was the first victim of the Columbine High School shooting in 1999. The organization was started by her father, Darrell Scott. Mr. Scott, his son, and other speakers travel around the world to relay Rachel Scott’s story and urge students to partake in her dream of wanting to make a difference in the world through kindness. Throughout the assembly he really enforced Rachel’s theory, which stated that “if people do a small act of kindness, then they will start a chain reaction of the same”. This message should be spread worldwide. The greatest form of love we can show one another is compassion. If we all had compassion for one another, there would be no need for bullying! We have no right to judge others, because everyone is created in the image of God. They speak to millions of people and encourage them to avoid bullying in all of its forms and to treat others with compassion. The influential video clips provided by Mr. Scott inspired the students and motivated them to improve the way they treat others. Through his powerful words, Mr. Scott touched each and every heart in the room. He is living Rachel’s dream and continuing to impact the lives of people throughout the world. Mr. Scott explained that Rachel’s story has saved the lives of many. He reinforced the idea that, “You can do so much more than you know you can do”. The assembly was very moving and gave the audience the opportunity to reflect on their overall attitude on life and start a “chain reaction” of love.
