Welcome to the magic of Cannon Beach! 2016 Cannon Beach Magazine 7 HAYSTACK ROCK Haystack Rock is one of Oregon’s most recognizable landmarks, home to colorful tidepools and diverse bird life. It rises 235 feet from the edge of the shoreline. At low tide, you can walk up to it and find colorful sea stars and other fascinating tidepool creatures in its intertidal area. Tufted Puffins can be observed nesting on Haystack Rock from early spring to midsummer, offering the most accessible viewing of them in the Northwest. Many other varieties of birds can also be seen, making it a great year-round bird watching location. It’s part of the Oregon Coast’s geological history, formed millions of years ago by lava flows that created many of the dramatic capes and headlands on the Oregon Coast, and is also part of the Oregon Islands National Wildlife Refuge and a state-protected marine environment. 8 cannonbeach.org EXPERIENCE THE TOP SIGHTS N ational Geographic Magazine has called Cannon Beach one of “The World’s 100 Most Beautiful Places.” That comes as no surprise to those who have experienced our miles of scenic sandy beach punctuated by beautiful rock formations and sea stacks characteristic of the unforgettable Oregon coastline. Dozens of public access points offer passage to this scenic wonderland. The soothing sound of ocean waves is a perfect setting for a refreshing stroll, a warm gathering around a beach fire or exploring the Oregon Coast’s remarkable natural areas. In addition to unbeatable beach views, visitors to Cannon Beach enjoy easy access to nearby natural areas with some of the most unforgettable vistas and stunning scenery on the Oregon Coast. The Beach & Haystack Rock: Nearly four miles of sandy beach stretch out north and south of downtown Cannon Beach with Oregon's iconic Haystack Rock sitting approximately midway on this scenic paradise. A protected marine and wildlife environment, it is both a home and hub for a host of natural wonders, including seasonal visits from Tufted Puffins and year-round tidepool life waiting to be discovered. Venture further and you'll find more beaches and dramatic rock formations that have made the Oregon Coast famous for its dramatic landscapes. Ecola State Park: Just minutes from downtown Cannon Beach, Ecola State Park tops the not-tobe-missed list of viewpoints and recreation areas. The park offers views of capes and headlands to the south, Haystack Rock and Tillamook Rock Lighthouse. A $5 State Parks day-use fee is required for parking and is the best bargain of any attraction on the Oregon Coast. Arcadia Beach: Located just two miles south of Cannon Beach is a picnic area and beach access at the Arcadia Beach State Recreation Site. The beach features interesting rock formations and tidepools just waiting to be explored. Walk north to Silver Point or about a mile south to Hug Point. Hug Point: About three miles south of Cannon Beach, Hug Point State Recreation Area offers scenic beach access and a peek at some local history. At lower tides, you can walk north, just around the point where you will find sea caves, a small waterfall and remnants of the old roadway that hugs the cliff side. Before the Coast Highway was built, the beach and this roadway offered the only passage around this point. When tides allow, you can walk south from Hug Point a mile or more to the beach at Arch Cape. Oswald West State Park: About ten minutes south of Cannon Beach is Oswald West State Park, offering several miles of hiking trails, scenic viewpoints, picnic areas and an easy trail to the beautiful cove of Short Sand Beach. Sky-high scenic viewpoints from turnouts along the Coast Highway offer panoramic coastal views. Hikers can spend a day exploring the Cape Falcon Trail, climb to the top of Neahkahnie Mountain or opt for the quicker jaunt to the dramatic edge of Devil’s Cauldron. The main Oswald West State Park parking area offers easy access to shady picnic areas and walking paths. Small Beach Town Charm: While the scenic surroundings are the number one attraction, Cannon Beach also offers the quintessential small beach town experience on the Oregon Coast. The Tillamook Rock Lighthouse can be seen from many places along the beach, though the best views are from Ecola State Park. The lighthouse is located just to the north of Cannon Beach, about two miles out to sea off Tillamook Head. The building of the lighthouse in the late 1800s was a momentous and dangerous feat of construction. The lighthouse certainly earned its nickname, "Terrible Tilly." Storms often brought flying rocks and debris through the lantern room and roof. The lighthouse was fi rst lit in 1881 and was decommissioned in 1957 due to the challenges of its upkeep. 12 cannonbeach.org EXPERIENCE COASTAL CULTURE ind delightful discoveries in the art galleries, specialty stores and boutiques all around town. Original art, fine apparel, artisanmade jewelry, unique home décor, delicious confections and endless other surprises, combined with tax-free shopping, make your visit the perfect time to splurge. Many of the shops and galleries are located within a few short blocks in downtown Cannon Beach, but just a few blocks to the south, the Midtown area of Cannon Beach is home to more great shopping. Glassblowing: Watch glassblowers transform glowing molten glass into beautiful works of art at Icefire Glassworks, a working glassblowing studio in Midtown Cannon Beach. Lewis & Clark Expedition History: Follow in the footsteps of America’s most famous explorers; gaze out at the views they described and imagine the culture they discovered. Members of Lewis and Clark’s Corps of Discovery visited Cannon Beach in January of 1806 on their historic expedition, investigating reports that a whale had washed ashore there. They found the whale south of the creek Clark named “Ecola,” the native term for whale. A sculpture at Whale Park in the north end of downtown commemorates the explorers’ visit and interpretive signs on the north side of Ecola Creek tell the story. The Tillamook Head Trail in Ecola State Park follows the route the explorers used to reach Cannon Beach. F Live Theater: Watch a live performance at Coaster Theatre which presents a year-round schedule of live community theater performances in an intimate setting. They are located in a historic building that once housed the community’s roller skating rink. Bald Eagles patrol the skies and Brown Pelicans skim the surf. Approximately 18,000 Gray Whales can be observed each spring and winter making one of the natural world’s most amazing migrations. From the tiniest hummingbirds to the 35-ton Gray Whales, Cannon Beach offers access to natural areas that reveal all of these wonders. A walk on the beach, a visit to a viewpoint or a hike through the rainforest rewards outdoor lovers with exciting scenes of nature. A multitude of vibrant ecosystems, from woodlands and wetlands to rocky shores, makes Cannon Beach a great yearround wildlife watching destination. 2016 Cannon Beach Magazine 15 THE COASTAL RAINFOREST Some of the world’s tallest trees reach to the heavens in the mossdraped Pacific Northwest coastal rainforest. Near the ocean, the rainforests are dominated by one of nature’s toughest survivors: The Sitka Spruce. It can stand up to the coast’s unrelenting windstorms while other trees snap and topple. Western Hemlock and Western Red Cedar also grow in this land of the giants. The forest floor is covered with thick layers of moss and, in the spring, False Lily of the Valley and Wood Sorrel carpet the landscape of endless greens. Ecola State Park and Oswald West State Park offer hiking trails through this unique ecosystem. Watch for wildflowers like Trillium in spring, mushrooms in fall and woodland birds any time of year. 16 cannonbeach.org EXPERIENCE NATURE TIDEPOOLS Many colorful and strange creatures live where the rocky coastline meets the sea. As the tide recedes, a unique and diverse environment is revealed in tidepools and intertidal areas. Bright sea stars in a variety of colors cling tightly to rocks. Green anemones lay open like flowers at the bottom of pools. A trained eye will find varieties of crabs, snails, limpets, coral, sponge and colorful sea slugs known as nudibranchs. One of the most accessible locations to explore the intertidal zone is at the base of Haystack Rock. Tidepool Tips: Check the tide tables for the lowest tide and arrive ready to explore as the tide is going out. Walk only on sand or bare rock to avoid damage to the life in these amazing natural areas. The area surrounding Haystack Rock is designated a “Marine Garden” and removing any material is prohibited. During daytime low tides from February to Labor Day, the Haystack Rock Awareness Program offers nature interpretive programs on the beach at Haystack Rock. BIRD WATCHING Beaches, rocky shores, woodlands, wetlands and estuaries make Cannon Beach a great bird watching destination year-round. The nearshore and offshore rocks along Cannon Beach are part of the Oregon Islands National Wildlife Refuge and some of nature’s greatest seabird displays can be observed including nesting Tufted Puffins and crowded colonies of Common Murres. Ecola Creek is another active spot for birds. The Cannon Beach Nature Trail follows the winding creek, passes through woodland and wetland habitat and the lagoons just east of downtown on 2nd Street. Puffins: Haystack Rock’s grassy covering provides nesting ground for Tufted Puffins from early spring through mid-summer, offering the Northwest’s most accessible location for viewing these brightly colored characters. Murres: Common Murres are the most abundant seabird found on the Oregon Coast. Their sheer numbers can be astonishing, as they nest shoulder-to-shoulder, sometimes covering every flat surface of offshore rocks. Thousands of the penguin-like murres can be seen in spring and summer, with the greatest concentration on Bird Rocks near Chapman Point at the north end of Cannon Beach. Pelicans: From spring through fall, Brown Pelicans can be observed soaring just above the waves or diving into the water with a splash. Eagles: Bald Eagles are a common sight along the beaches, patrolling offshore rocks or wetlands. In recent years they are increasingly seen hunting at Haystack Rock and the murre colony at Bird Rocks. early mornings and late evenings during the quiet season. Check the meadows at Ecola State Park or grassy areas of Les Shirley Park along the north side of Ecola Creek. ROOSEVELT ELK Network responds to reports of mammals on the beach and will check the animal and post signs to keep beach-goers clear until the creature returns to the sea. Visitors to Cannon Beach often encounter herds of Roosevelt Elk, calmly grazing in meadows or meandering through the forest. Elk are most frequently seen in WHALE WATCHING There’s nothing like the experience of seeing a Gray Whale surface and exhale with a “whoosh,” sending a spout of mist and vapor into the air. Several varieties of whales may be spotted any time of year, but the most commonly seen is the Gray Whale, which migrates along the coast twice annually. Any walk on the beach or visit to Ecola State Park can become an encounter with these magnificent creatures. SEALS & SEA LIONS Seals and sea lions are sometimes spotted from the beach or viewpoints overlooking rocky haul-outs. Seals might be seen bobbing in the water just offshore and sometimes seals and sea lions are found on the beach. Baby seals are occasionally left on the beach by their mothers while they hunt for food. Never touch or move a baby seal. Its mother will return and moving a baby seal will endanger its survival. Sea lions are occasionally seen on beaches when they are molting. If you find a sea lion on the beach, stay clear, keep dogs at a distance and notify local authorities. Discover the secrets of the quiet season in Cannon Beach E Eagles soar over the beaches. Large waves thunder as they collide with the rocky shore following a storm. Between October and May, the pace of the coast changes dramatically and it’s a magical time to visit Cannon Beach. Wildlife lovers, outdoor enthusiasts and those looking to enjoy secluded beaches and uncrowded streets enjoy this season in Cannon Beach. Weather can be unpredictable, but that’s exactly what quiet season visitors love about Cannon Beach. Many seek the wonder of the howling winds, drenching rains and crashing waves that can only be experienced this time of year. Others watch the weather forecast for fair skies when a visit to Cannon Beach can offer spectacular days, brilliant sunsets and beaches to enjoy practically to yourself. Room rates during this quiet season are an attraction in themselves, when oceanview rooms are offered at reduced rates. Slip away midweek and the savings are unsurpassed. 26 cannonbeach.org Gary Hayes Beth Wise WATCH WILD WAVES Powerful Pacific storms can whip the seas into a turbulent frenzy, and when these surging waves meet the rocky shores of the North Oregon Coast, it is an unforgettable experience. Waves explode on the rocks, transforming into a cloud of mist and foam with a thunder you can feel throughout your body. Those who have witnessed this spectacle know that it in no way resembles the relatively mild seas of summer. Huge waves swell, curl, break and send aloft a spindrift of mist. Cannon Beach provides the perfect vantage point to appreciate this spectacle. Watch the waves crash on Haystack Rock and The Needles, or get a commanding view of the scene from Ecola State Park. Many oceanview lodgings also let you watch this sensational sight from the comfort of your room. 28 cannonbeach.org EXPERIENCE THE QUIET SEASON STORM WATCHING BEST BEACHCOMBING A Pacific storm is an experience many hardy visitors seek out and Cannon Beach is the perfect place to take it in. Safe vantage points, including many oceanfront resorts, allow you to survey the scene and feel the power of the wind, rain and waves that have sculpted these striking landscapes. Some of the most remarkable scenes occur following a storm as wind-tossed seas continue to pound the coastline and explode on rock formations along the shore. Beachcombers are rewarded with the best finds of the year as high tides and strong winds bring in all sorts of natural and man-made surprises. GREAT ROOM RATES Whether you are seeking a storm or watching the weather report for one of those amazing stretches of unseasonably beautiful days, you will discover great room rates by avoiding peak seasons. Slip away midweek during the quiet season for even greater savings and uncrowded beaches. HOLIDAY LIGHTS Beginning on Thanksgiving, the village of Cannon Beach lights up downtown with colorful displays of festive holiday lighting. In early December, even the seas offshore light up with twinkling lights as the commercial Dungeness Crab fishing season begins and crabbers haul in the Northwest delicacy. WHALE WATCHING An estimated 18,000 Gray Whales can be seen migrating just offshore between mid-March and mid-April, then again in mid-December to midJanuary. It’s the longest migration of any mammal on Earth. For one week during the peak of each of the migrations, volunteers are available at Ecola State Park to help visitors spot whales during the coast-wide Whale Watching Spoken Here program. SECLUDED BEACHES Sometimes, you can enjoy long stretches of beach all to yourselves when you visit during the quiet season. While no official correction for Cannon Beach is available, these tide tables are intended to help plan a safe trip to the beach. Be aware, tides can vary from predictions due to a variety of climatic conditions. All times are indicated in Pacific Time Zone. STAY OFF BEACH LOGS: Drift logs can be very dangerous when they are in or near the water. Incoming waves can roll even large logs, which can crush a person. NEVER CLIMB CLIFFS OR ROCKS: Do not climb cliffs or try to scale steep embankments. All rock formations on Oregon’s shoreline are federally protected areas, as part of the Oregon Islands National Wildlife Refuge. Supervise children carefully at all times. The cliffs are rocky and unstable. Tragic injuries have been the result of foolish attempts at adventure. Don’t put your child, yourself or rescue crews in danger. TAKE YOUR TRASH OFF THE BEACH: Remove your trash from the beach and find a trash can. Plastic bags can kill birds, seals and other sea creatures that mistake the bags for food. Bring an extra trash bag with you and do your part to help keep the beach beautiful. SUPERVISE CHILDREN: Stay near your children and keep your eye on them. Never let children play in the water unsupervised. Play close to the lifeguard station. KNOW YOUR ABILITY IN THE WATER: Don’t paddle out farther than you can swim back. Ocean water is very cold. The water averages 55 degrees Fahrenheit and hypothermia is a danger. Do not go swimming in the ocean without a wetsuit. A wetsuit is critical and required surfing equipment. BE AWARE OF RIP TIDES: Rip tides are strong currents that can pull a person away from the shore. If you get caught in a rip current, do not panic or struggle. Swim parallel to the beach and call for help. Never swim alone. It’s always best to swim near the lifeguard station. REPORT INJURED BIRDS OR MAMMALS: If you find an injured bird or mammal, do not touch it! Call the Cannon Beach Police (non-emergency number (503) 436-2811) who will notify proper agencies. LIFEGUARDS: From June 1 through Labor Day, lifeguards are stationed on the beach in front of Haystack Rock and patrol the beach from Ecola Creek to Silver Point. Signs indicating current ocean conditions are posted every quarter-mile and are equipped with emergency flags. In the event of an emergency, pulling the rope at the bottom of the sign will raise a red flag and summon a lifeguard. EARTHQUAKES & TSUNAMIS: Although rare, earthquakes followed by tsunamis have been known to strike the Oregon Coast. If you hear the Cannon Beach Community Warning System or feel an earthquake, move inland to higher ground as quickly as possible, preferably on foot. Emergency instructions and an official “all clear” will be broadcast over the public Emergency Alert System wcatwc.arh.noaa.gov cannonbeach.org " " " ! # $ JUNE 2016 $ # ! ! " !! # #! # !# # OCTOBER 2016 ! ! 66 BE AWARE OF TIDES: Always be aware of the tides when you’re on the beach. Don’t get trapped by incoming tides. Even when the tide is going out, it’s common for rogue or sneaker waves to come much farther up the beach. These waves can sweep an adult or child off their feet and pull them out to sea. Respect the ocean. Never turn your back on the waves. Tide Tables APRIL 2016 MARCH 2016 MAY 2016 " ! # $ ! # $ ! JULY 2016 ! !$ " ! SEPTEMBER 2016 AUGUST 2016 $ " $ $ ! " ! #$ " # ! " #" $ ! $ !
