About the OMA Statuette
The Outstanding Merchandising Achievement Award has been a recognized symbol
of in-store display excellence for more than 50 years. The statuette is based upon
America’s first three-dimensional point-of-purchase display -- the cigar store Indian.
The statuettes were placed outside tobacco shops to alert passerbys where they
could obtain tobacco products. The first cigar store Indians were carved from
broken pieces of spars or masts by sailors waiting for return voyages.
Bright-colored paints were used to make the Indians more lifelike.
From this modest beginning to the award winner of today, point-of-purchase
merchandising has spread to impact almost all retail products. The Indian is,
therefore, a natural choice for symbolic content.
The POPAI OMA Statuette was sculpted for POPAI by Elliot J. Axelrod in New York
and was named OMA for Outstanding Merchandising Achievement. This year we
introduced a new base for the Gold Winners, which will eventually transition to the
base of all awards. To commemorate the 50th Anniversary, all award
statuettes will wear a commemorate medallion around their necks.

The Outstanding Merchandising Achievement Awards Competition
is the recognition of the efforts of the talented number of professionals in
organizations who participate in planning, executing and implementing instore marketing.
We honor these most inspiring and deserving examples of our craft,
those solutions that are engaging as well as effective – and those that
signify the evolution and advancement of our collective industry.
Now, as was true 50 years ago, the entire industry looks to these awards
represented here as a reflection of our time, as well as the influence of our
creativity and expertise, its manifestation in the great work is shown
within.
These awards could not have been made possible, without the
valued contribution of each and every Award Entrant, the OMA Committee,
the POPAI Staff, and those individuals who volunteered their inestimable
time as Marshals and Judges. Thank you all for your dedication, talent
and insight.

Thank you to all who participated in this year’s
Point of Purchase Advertising International’s Annual
Outstanding Merchandising Awards Competition (OMAs).
With a 10% increase of entries this year, we know the in-store
marketing industry has gained momentum. What a great way
to help celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the OMA Statuette.
The OMAs not only show the excellence of the in-store
marketing and promotions industry, but also show the
creativity and power of it. We appreciate all the producers
and suppliers who represented our industry so well this year,
and the brands and retailers who made it possible.
The companies mentioned in this book received top scores
from our panel of expert judges, and now have the honor of
saying they’re an OMA winner to their peers, clients, and
prospective clients around the globe.
We hope this book will offer you inspiration, more connections
in the industry, and excitement for the following year.

Judging Criteria
There are three major scoring categories, each of
which correspond to a particular point in the
development process and the relationships
between brand marketers, service providers and
retailers. Across these, there are 10 individual
criteria, each of which were evaluated and
collectively scored in its major category, based
upon a “1 through 10” scoring system.
Judges were asked to consider the clarity and
veracity of the written information for each of
the 10-scoring criteria. This, along with the
resulting display until provided the basis for
the judging process. Entries were evaluated on
how well the observed display unit adhered to
these criteria and provides “proof” of the
presented information.
Judging Process
A panel of judges comprised of brand marketers,
retailers, advertising agency representatives,
shopper insights professionals, researchers and
producers score the entries in a range of
categories. There were two rounds of judging.
The first round was done online, in which judges
reviewed the entrants’ comprehensive written case
history and submission. The second round of
judging was done in person, on the GlobalShop
Show floor in Las Vegas, NV, where they
evaluated (or re-evaluate) the actual displays to
formulate a final score.
Scoring is based on the display’s ability to
increase sales, obtain retail placements, and
work strategically to position the brand at the
point of sale. After the Awards Celebration, all OMA
entries become a permanent part of POPAI’s online
Creative Gallery, and winning displays are featured
in a printed OMA Award Annual publication.
