April 2011 4 PRESS RELEASE Frank’s to Work with Shell on Olympus (Mars B) Tension Leg Platform Project Frank’s Casing Crew & Rental Tools, Inc. has been awarded a contract by Shell Exploration & Production Company to fabricate tendons for the Olympus (Mars B) Tension Leg Platform project in the Gulf of Mexico. The Olympus Tension Leg Platform will be Shell’s newest deepwater platform, located at Mississippi Canyon Block 807 in approximately 3,000 ft. of water 95 miles south of New Orleans, Louisiana. The tendons fabricated by Frank’s will be critical components, holding the TLP in place by connecting its hull to piles driven on the bottom of the sea floor. These tendons, at 290 ft. long and 170,000 lbs. each, will be among the largest tendons built by any company. The Olympus TLP has sixteen tendons total—four at each corner of the platform. The scope of the contract awarded to Frank’s includes fabrication of 184 individual tendon segments. Qualification of welding procedures and fatigue testing is also in Frank’s scope of work. The Deepwater Fabrication Department at Frank’s will manage this project. Fabrication of tendons will take place at Frank’s New Iberia deepwater fabrication facility, which, among other capabilities, has a hex joint rack capable of fabricating pipes from 8 5/8" to 48" in diameter up to 300 ft. in length. This facility also has a 450 ft. long bulkhead designed for heavy lifts of long pipe sections directly onto barges after fabrication. Qualification of procedures on this project is expected to begin in Q2 of 2011. Frank’s Port of Iberia 5 Winners’ Day at Frank’s International Aberdeen Total E&P Schools Days Competition By Cherie Scott Frank’s International Aberdeen recently had the pleasure of hosting a Winners’ Day for the Total E&P UK Schools Days Competition. The Total E&P UK Schools Days Competition, organized by Christine Jones (Issues Manager at Total E&P UK), is a Scottish regional event held in September of each year. Schools are invited to send two teams of five from S3 level (ages 13-14). The 2010 competition was an all day event that involved the children learning about general engineering, International Energy Agency (IEA) statistics on global supply/demand, carbon capture and storage (CCS) and global energy. A geologist spoke to the children about earth science and exploration, and then two engineers demonstrated an intelligent pig checking a pipeline. The purpose of the competition is to encourage children to take an interest in science, geology and engineering. The winning team from each region was taken to Aberdeen for various activities, including visits to the Aberdeen Maritime Museum, Aberdeen University and Frank’s International’s Aberdeen location. Cherie Scott organized a tour for students to visit Frank’s International Aberdeen, where members of Frank’s management team gave presentations. The students were taken on a site and rig tour, and the day ended with a quiz and prizes. Each presentation covered a different aspect of the industry. The first was given by Charles Forbes (Regional Operations Manager for Europe and West Africa), on an introduction to the Oil and Gas Industry. He presented a brief history on the Industry and explained why oil and gas are so essential to our everyday life. Charles described the oil and gas extraction process, showed a short animation of oilfield drilling and highlighted exciting future prospects the oil industry has to offer. 6 The second presentation, an introduction on how an oil rig works, was delivered by Dougal Brown, UK Engineering Manager. He outlined the different types of rigs, showed an animated tour of a Semi-Submersible and described each part of the rig in detail, from the derrick to the shakers. The final presentation was given by Eddie Sinclair (UK Technical Director). Eddie’s presentation covered the history of Frank’s International. He provided the students with historical dates of Frank’s from 1938, when Frank Mosing started Frank’s Casing Crew, to the production of the FA-1 Tool. He also spoke about Frank’s International’s locations around the globe. Following the presentations, the children were treated to a site and rig tour from Frank’s UK Operations Manager, Steve Murray, and Operations and Logistics Coordinator, Craig Ogston. On these tours, the children saw many of Frank’s International’s tools, including Varco’s Flush Mounted Spider’s, Handslip’s, Power Units and Power Tongs. They were shown the process of what happens to a tool when it returns to the base from offshore. The students watched as the tools arrived on the containers, were washed in the wash bay and were stripped of paint. They witnessed the tools going through a Magnetic Particle Inspection (MPI) and then being dressed and greased in the service bay for painting. The winners were then taken to the training rig to familiarize them with a working platform. Frank’s International Aberdeen is honored to have been a part of this experience and looks forward to participating for years to come. Cherie Scott is the Commercial Assistant at Frank’s International Aberdeen. 7 Offshore Technology Conference Houston, Texas 2010 By Shannon Routte The Offshore Technology Conference (OTC) was founded in 1969 to advance the Oil & Gas Industry. It is an annual four-day event held at Reliant Center in Houston, Texas. OTC’s mission statement, taken directly from their website is as follows: “OTC is organized and operated exclusively to promote and further the advance of scientific and technical knowledge of offshore resources and environmental matters.” OTC boasts a half million square feet of exhibits, with more than 2,358 exhibiting companies. According to a Press Release on the OTC website, 72,900 people attended OTC in 2010, a substantial increase from the 2009 total of 67,700. Frank’s has displayed tools in a booth at OTC for over 25 years! 2010 offered yet another opportunity for Frank’s to showcase five tools and capitalize on valuable face time with current and potential customers. Frank’s 8 commitment to OTC in 2010 was paramount. Not only did 15 engineers attend the show to field questions from the booth’s guests, but Mr. Donald Mosing, President and CEO of Frank’s Casing Crew and Rental Tools, was also in attendance. Frank’s is privileged to have an even larger booth at OTC May 2, 2011 through May 5, 2011. A variety of tools, including three of Frank’s International’s drilling tools, will be on display with qualified sales professionals and engineers to answer questions. Frank’s looks forward to welcoming its guests for another great year. For more information on OTC, visit www.otcnet.org. Deep Water activities are still sparse, but Jackup Drilling Rigs are getting back to business in the shelve area, which is water depths of 40' to 350'. After a well (in suitable water depths) has been drilled and proven viable, protection caissons are installed over the single well head. The caisson must be driven over the well head and drive pipe that was installed at the beginning of the drilling process. The top of this caisson is utilized to install the well head structure that supports navigation lights, fog horns and well monitoring equipment. A typical well would have the well head mounted on 30 inch drive pipe. For caisson installation, the well head, or “Christmas Tree” has a drive protector/bullet (i.e. a large cylinder with a conical nose) placed over it. The drive protector in a typical well has an outer diameter (OD) of 42 inches and is six feet long. It protects the well head as the caisson is lowered over, welded in sections and then driven (with a diesel or hydraulic hammer) into the sea bed for structural support. In the past, several techniques have been utilized in an effort to minimize the movement between the inside of the caisson and outside of well head bullet/drive pipe. This stabilization provided that the units were concentric and allowed for the welding of the next section of the caisson, which is typically 45 feet long. One common method for welding caisson is to weld blades inside the sections. However, the blades have to be sized to clear the well head bullet at the top, which allows for considerable movement. In rough weather, caisson movement leads to the suspension of operations and nonproductive time (NPT), because the next sections cannot be welded. Another technique commonly used is to install rigid centralizers onto the 30" drive pipe prior to the start of the caisson operations. This method requires personnel to access the area below the well head deck to install the units. The first unit is allowed to slide to the sea bed, and the second one usually has to be secured to the 30" drive pipe above the water line. This takes considerable time and places the installation personnel at risk for injury. While this method allows for a closer fit on the centralizers than the pre-installed blades previously mentioned, the placement below the water line cannot be controlled. The sea bed unit does not provide stabilization of the caisson until they come into contact. In water depths greater than 40', caisson movement resulting from wave action can still hamper operations. installation. As such, Frank’s refused to take the path of least resistance by following the competition and manufacturing the same type of centralizers. Mediocrity is not an option for Frank’s. In keeping with the spirit of the Frank's philosophy, “We Want the Best, So We Build Our Own,” Kirk Mosing, former Hammer Operations Supervisor, believed that Frank’s could provide an improved system to address caisson installation problems. Through his persistence, Frank’s Pipe Department, along with Antelope Oil Tools, was able to develop a new system that differs significantly from the competition. The patent pending, integral reverse bow caisson centralizer has been superior to previous methods of caisson stabilization during installations and has provided greater stabilization than the previous system. Additionally, it reduces rig time and personnel risk in caisson applications. The key is the pre-installed reverse bow centralizer that has the ability, even after being compressed over the wellhead bullet, to center the caisson onto the drive pipe. The bow springs then act as a damper against the wave action movement that could normally cause interruptions of the operation. This allows a larger window in which operations can continue during rough weather, saving additional rig time and money. Caisson Centralizers are available in various sizes. The units are positioned in the caisson at the required position while it is in the pipe yard, reducing all rig time normally associated with previous systems. It does not require any personnel involvement at the well site, eliminating personnel risk. The ability to do the installation in the pipe yard allows for the correct placement related to the water depth in which the caisson will be set. This system was developed in 2007, and to date has been used successfully with several Gulf Coast operators. Frank’s continues its commitment to providing the best service and products available in the industry. Additionally, Frank’s strives to improve its services and products through its wealth of experience and exceptional personnel. On April 9th-10th, 2010, with the help of Frank’s International, we were once again able to participate. As the owner of Early Haze, a 36-foot Chris Craft Commander, and as the pastors of Pentecostals of Santa Fe, we are always looking for opportunities to reach out to those around us. From the first time we fished the tournament, our hearts went out to the participants who were of all ages and disabilities. Some were born with deformities, while others had been badly injured or burned. On the Friday night before the tournament, the Galveston Yacht Club and Turning Point co-host a shrimp boil and meet and greet. Everyone gathers under a large tent and mingles with those less fortunate, while engaging in a silent auction and watching a slide show of activities the organization has sponsored in the past. The joy of the Friday night party is only surpassed by the faces of the physically challenged as boats arrive and load. We may take for granted the simple joys of a boat ride or a fishing trip, but for those in wheelchairs, such an experience is treasured. Every effort is appreciated, and the thankfulness that comes from the participants is overwhelming. The fishing tournament kicked-off on Saturday morning. We loaded our fisherman, his wheelchair and his brother-in-law (who came along to help) into the cockpit and headed for the fishing grounds. The morning was dreary, cool and overcast with a high chance of rain, but we steamed on through it all in high spirits. We fished for a couple of hours and caught some nice Black Drum (it was a drum tournament). While we were sitting and visiting, waiting for the fish to bite, it began to rain. As the other boats made their way past us to find shelter, I asked our passengers if they were ready to call it a day. The decision was made to stay. We all sat in the cabin, fishing lines still in the water, hoping the day would never end. That night closed with another party, fellowship, BBQ and plenty of fish stories and laughter. We did not win the tournament (maybe next year), but we did win some great friends. I would like to thank Frank’s International, with a special thank you to Keith Mosing for his sponsorship. This event is a great cause and Frank’s generosity is greatly appreciated. I am honored to work for a company that makes an effort to reach into the local community and the world. Thank you again for a providing us with the opportunity to participate in a great tournament! The tournament is growing so fast that we had to scrounge for boats at the last minute. If you can help by volunteering your boat or your time, please contact Turning Point by visiting www.turningpointnation.org. Look for them on Facebook too! 13 2010 BP Multiple Sclerosis 150 Houston to Austin, Via La Grange By Keith “Kit” Lutgring I am not the sedentary type, but I am certainly no glutton for punishment either. When I was approached about riding in the BP MS 150 bike race, I asked, “In what motorized vehicle will I ride” and “Can I drive?” Much to my dismay, the bikes were powered by man, not machine, and the participants were riding, not driving. There were, however, many other Frank’s Worldwide employees who were up for the challenge, even though it meant they would be subjected to powering two wheeled cycles with nothing but their own brawn and heart. All the athletes who contributed their sweat, toil and dollars to aid in the battle against MS were supported by a team of volunteers who followed behind them in support vehicles. This event is a true testament to the participants and volunteers who are willing to dedicate their time and suffer with their sore muscles to benefit a worthy cause. Corporate sponsors and individuals share one common goal: raising funds for the battle against Multiple Sclerosis. Frank’s Worldwide partnered with Southwestern Energy and was able to field a team of over 50 cyclists, many of whom have been exposed to the effects of MS on loved ones, friends or colleagues. Loved ones of individuals diagnosed with MS often feel powerless, and at times helpless. This race provides an outlet for them to show their support for the people they care about and those they have never met. For some, the 150 mile stretch of scenic byways in Texas represented a challenge they could face and conquer. For others, cycling is their passion, and they were thrilled to be able to do something they love for such a worthy cause. The starting line for the race was in Houston, Texas. The first trek was on roads less traveled, which were relatively flat. For approximately 50 miles the terrain slowly worked the cyclists’ muscles. Then, before they knew it, they were faced with some pretty serious elevation changes. The hills are camouflaged by the beautiful Texas countryside, with green fields, wild 14 flowers and lazily grazing cattle. Nonetheless, it was uphill! Thankfully, the organizers of the race were not totally sadistic; they divided the race into two segments. There was a mid race layover in La Grange, Texas, a welcome stop for the weary travelers who had pedaled 75 miles! La Grange offered showers, massages, hot food, cold drinks and a comfortable place for everyone to lay their heads, which is where I fit in! I, the cook, worked alongside two volunteer chefs and drove the truck that pulled the FI Cook Wagon, which was stocked with burners, pots, pans, silverware and recipes! The idea was to have food available when the first and last cyclists arrived. Some participants were faster than others, so the arrivals were staggered for several hours. The early arrivals were offered sandwiches and snacks to tide them over until a larger meal was provided in the afternoon. The next morning, the volunteers were up early to provide breakfast for the cyclists as they prepared for the final, uphill, leg to Austin, Texas. The heart and determination of the cyclists was not hampered by the light rain that fell that morning. The riders rumbled to a state of awareness and methodically began their routines of preparing for the final 75 miles of pain and accomplishment. The participants were from all different walks of life; young and mature, plump and thin, amateurs and professionals. Despite their differences, they all came together to make this event successful. They were all driven by thousands of different reasons but shared one common goal: to finish the MS150. Not all completed the race on their cycles, but all contributed to the success of the 2010 MS 150. I am honored to have been a part of this experience, and while I cannot speak for the other participants and volunteers, I am enthusiastically gearing up for another year! If you are game for fun and pain, please join us this year, as a volunteer or cyclist, to make the BP MS150 2011 as successful as the 2010 event. 15 Frank’s International’s Annual Crawfish Boil Fundraiser Benefiting KickStart Kids By Shannon Routte The Offshore Technology Conference (OTC) is a powerful networking tool. It is also an opportunity to show appreciation to customers and raise money for a worthy cause. For the past 27 years, Frank’s has organized a crawfish boil on Tuesday of OTC, the proceeds from which are donated to Chuck Norris’ Foundation, KickStart Kids. Frank’s 2010 crawfish boil was attended by 1,431 of Frank’s employees, customers and friends. They had the opportunity to view several Frank’s tools, as listed below: • 14" 1000 Ton Buoyancy Module Spider • 1250 Ton Drill Pipe Elevator • 1250 Ton Casing Elevator • 1250 Ton Casing Spider • 1250 Ton Elevator Links • 1000 Ton 6 5/8" SBS • FX-350 • Harmonic Isolation Tool (HI Tool™) • Cutting Bed Impeller (CBI™) Tool • EZ Tripper™; and • Stab-Rite Tool The Joe Douglas Band performed and Louisiana Foods served boiled crawfish, boiled corn, boiled potatoes and Jambalaya. In addition to the tools, good music, excellent food and even better company, Chuck Norris’ KickStart Kids (school age children from local schools) performed for the attendees. Two demonstration teams performed martial arts routines, providing the audience with the unique, firsthand, opportunity to view the benefit of their donation. Frank’s is blessed and honored by its ability to donate $50,000 to KickStart Kids in 2010!! When asked why he committed more than a quarter-century to Frank’s, Leonard replied, “It’s a great company with good people to work for, and there is always something different and challenging about every day.” In an email to the Lafayette employees, Leonard typed: “I would like to thank Frank’s Casing Crew President Donald E. Mosing and the board of directors; Larry Mosing, Keith Mosing, Brent Mosing, 22 Mike Mosing and Kirk Mosing for appointing me the honor of VP Corporate Sales of Frank’s Casing Crew. I am very humbled, considering the magnitude of qualified people that they have to select from. I will continue working hard to keep Frank’s (the largest family owned oilfield service company in the world) ahead of the competition. …Thanks to the efforts of Keith Mosing, Frank’s International has established World Wide presence in the Oil and Gas Industry. This affords all of us the upper hand that our competition lacks. I cannot conquer this job alone. I ask for the continued support that each and every one of you have given me over the last 30 years. I will need help from all of you in order to keep Frank’s on top of our competition. Please, should anyone have suggestions on how we can better our sales efforts, please contact me. I pray that all of you will have continued success....” 10260 Westheimer, Ste. 700 Houston, TX 77042
