SUMMER 2014
The Magic School Bus™ Kicks Up A Storm at DISCOVERY Children’s Museum.
Come and take a journey that’s out-of-this-world.
Take a ride with Ms. Frizzle and her friends for a whirling journey into
weather adventures at The Magic School Bus™ Kicks Up A Storm
through Sept. 1, 2014. This traveling exhibit is based on the popular
Scholastic Entertainment books and television series now available
on Netflix. The Magic School Bus™ has been transformed into a flying
weather observatory where different types of weather can be created,
experienced, and measured. Visitors will be immersed in the weather
exhibit in a uniquely Scholastic’s The Magic School Bus™ way by visiting
Ms. Frizzle’s Classroom, climbing aboard the bus itself, transformed
into a Weather Observatory or visiting the Walkerville Weather
Center. Through these three interactive environments, visitors can
explore the water cycle and its relation to weather, and how influences
from air, heat, water and land combine to create weather.
“We are pleased to host The Magic School Bus™ Kicks Up a Storm where
visitors will learn about the science of weather while having great fun,”
states Linda Quinn, Chief Executive Officer of the Museum. “This handson exhibit will introduce children to the wonder of science. We hope it will
ignite a passion and interest in understanding the world around them, and
an ability to envision themselves as the scientists of the future.”
ICE CREAM SOCIAL
Just for Discovery Children’s Museum Members!
The Scholastic’s The Magic School Bus museum exhibit is an ideal
way for children, parents and teachers to have a real in-person Magic
School Bus experience through Ms. Frizzle’s one-of-a-kind approach to
making science fun.
Everyone can learn about the different types of weather and their
characteristics, and how to read natural world indicators to predict the
weather. Plus, visitors can manipulate scientific measurement tools such
as thermometers and anemometers and get the behind-the-scenes
scoop on how to read maps and graphs like a real meteorologist!

has tripled. We were able to serve more than
80,000 patrons through free or reduced
prices, offering a vibrant and engaging learning
experience to children from economically and
diverse backgrounds. These children and
families thank you.
I would like to thank everyone for their
continued support of DISCOVERY Children’s
Museum and your help in getting this wonderful
new facility here at the Donald W. Reynolds
Discovery Center open. Our current success
has brought us many new opportunities to
encourage children to discover the fun of
learning, and our future looks bright.
We have collaborated with many organizations,
including The Smith Center of the Performing
Arts, to provide learning experiences in the
fields of art, science and early childhood
learning. The subjects are core to who we
are, and providing this hands-on learning
experience to 360,000 visitors has been a joy.
We often hear that great cities invest in their
children. The new DISCOVERY Children’s
Museum is proud to report that in our first year
of operations at our new home, we served
360,000 children and families. Our membership
DISCOVERY Children’s Museum believes in the
word CHANGE. Every day, the world around
us is changing. As we reach these little ones
around us, we must encourage new learning
and new opportunities.

LINDA'S GOODBYE CONTINUED
We owe it to our children to encourage
their exploration of learning, as they
will one day be the leaders of our City,
and with technology, they may go to
boundaries we can only imagine. As
we learn more about the development
of a child’s brain, we must be open
to discover and change our methods
of teaching. As we look to serve our
community, we must also look to new
partners that expand our reach, and to
wonderful parents like you, that have
the vision and the commitment, to make
a change in the lives of our young.
For those that embrace change, it can
be a wonderful thing and lead to many
new adventures. Last month, I made
a life changing decision – to retire –
yes, relatively young. I have seen the
museum through some tough times,
then through a capital campaign, well
that was a tough time too, then to the
fruition of this wonderful new home
at the Donald W. Reynolds Discovery
Center. The job of teaching our young
is never done, but for me as well as the
museum, it is a great time for change.
While I am here through September
for the transition, the vision for the
next steps of this museum is right
around the corner, and it is a great
time to provide a new leader with the
opportunity to come in at the ground
floor, help establish this vision, and
continue the wonderful work that was
started. This wouldn’t have happened
with each of you, and perhaps I made
a little difference too!
Thank you!
